Developing an attractant for monitoring fruit-feeding moths in citrus orchards

- Description: Fruit-piercing moths are a sporadic pest of citrus, especially in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, where the adults can cause significant damage in outbreak years. Currently the only way in which to successfully control fruit-feeding moths within the orchards is the use of repellent lights. However, growers confuse fruit-piercing moths with fruit-sucking moths that don‘t cause primary damage, and there is no way of monitoring which moth species are attacking the fruit in the orchards during the night. In a previous study, banana was shown to be the most attractive bait for a variety of fruit-feeding moth species. Therefore the aim of this study was to determine the population dynamics of fruit-feeding moths develop a cost-effective alternative to the use of fresh banana as a bait for fruit-piercing moths. Fresh banana was compared to nine alternative synthetic attractants, frozen banana and a control under field conditions in several orchards in the Eastern Cape Province. Once again, banana was shown to be the most attractive bait. Some 23 species of fruit-feeding moth species were sampled in the traps, but there was only two fruit-piercing species, Serrodes partita (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Eudocima sp. Surprisingly S. partita, which was thought to be the main pest, comprised only 6.9% of trap catches. Serrodes partita, is a sporadic pest, only becoming problematic every five to 10 years after good rainfall in the Little Karoo region that causes flushes of their larval host, wild plum, Pappea capensis (Ecklon and Zeyher). During these outbreaks, damage to fruit can range from 70 to 90% and this is especially so for soft skinned citrus. A study on the morphology of the proboscis confirmed that only two species of fruit-piercing moths were present. Trap catches over three citrus growing seasons was linked to fruit damage found within several orchards. Once again fruit-piercing moth damage was relatively low in comparison to other types of damage such as mechanical and undefined damage. There was a very weak correlation between S. partita trap catches and damage, but generally damage was recorded two to three weeks after a peak in S. partita trap catches. Climatic conditions were also recorded and compared to weekly trap catches of S. partita, and while temperature and wind direction had no influence on moth populations, precipitation in the orchards was weakly correlated with trap catches. This study has shown that in non-outbreak seasons, the main fruit-piercing moth, S. partita comprises a small percentage of fruit-feeding moths in citrus orchards, but that growers are unable to determine the difference between fruit-piercing species and the harmless fruit-sucking species. Further fresh banana remains the best method for attracting fruit-piecing moths to traps, but this is not cost effective and thus a commercially viable protocol for monitoring these species remains elusive.

This approach frames community participation as central to the design and implementation of responsive health systems. Having earned international recognition for its pro-poor policies in the social sectors after independence in 1980, the Zimbabwean government over the last three decades has overseen a progressive decline in the provision of health services and near collapse of the health sector. Participation of communities, whether in the form of organised groups or as unorganised members of the public, is argued to be an important pillar in the effective performance of a health system. There has been extensive research conducted on Zimbabwe’s implementation of primary health care in light of health status, accessibility and health services uptake. A few studies have been undertaken to demonstrate that the participation of communities in the health system is an important factor in improving the effectiveness of the health system in Zimbabwe. This thesis analyses the existing mechanisms for community participation in the health system in Zimbabwe and brings out multiple perspectives on the underlying contradictions, tensions and processes at play between policy and practice. This thesis makes a contribution to the growing number of studies on participation in health by offering an empirically rich critical analysis of community participation in the health system in one ward located in Goromonzi District in Zimbabwe. In examining the structural and procedural forms of the health system, insights concerning the nature and form of community participation in primary health care are brought to the fore. The thesis concludes that the ways in which community participation takes place in the health system in Zimbabwe is influenced by a number of socio-economic, political and societal factors and this in turn has a bearing on how health policy expresses itself in practice.

This movement is known as urbanisation and makes it difficult for the local government to fully understand citizens’ needs particularly pertaining to public safety matters. During the first phase of the Public Safety Smart City project, it was identified that there is a need for feedback loop to facilitate effective communication of public safety issues between citizens and local government. This means that EL citizens do not have a better channel in place to address their public safety issues to the local government. This could lead to the decisions made by the local government in public safety not fully communicated back to the citizens. The primary objective of the study is to develop a feedback loop model that will assist in more effective reporting of public safety issues between citizens and the local government. The study followed an interpretivism paradigm and the research methodology employed is the qualitative approach. This was influenced by the existing De Fleur model of communication, secondary data and also semi-structured interviews. The interviews were conducted with eleven citizens and four managers from the Department of Public Safety. It was ascertained that the lack of a feedback loop about public safety issues between citizens and local government is likely to increase public safety issues. Findings revealed that this is because citizens are not continuously updated about their reports and also about the state of public safety matters. Furthermore, the methods of communication utilised lead to poor communication of public safety issues. The study concludes that the introduction of an Information and Communication Technology enabled feedback loop between citizens and local government can help in reducing public safety issues and make public safety officials proactive rather than reactive.

- Description: Gender oppression has been a significant discussion to the development of gender, cultural and feminist theories. The primary focus of this study is to investigate how patriarchal traditions, colonialism, and religious oppression force women to struggle under constrictions oppositional to empowerment. Thus, the project provides a comparative analysis of three texts from different African postcolonial societies by three African female writers: Mariama Bâ, Neshani Andreas and Sindiwe Magona. The author‟s biographies and historical context of their novels will be analyzed, as well as a summary of their stories will be included in order to provide the context for gender criticism. These writer‟s work; So Long a Letter, The Purple Violet of Oshaantu and Beauty‟s Gift depict patriarchal, cultural and religious laws which exist in Senegal, Namibia and South Africa, respectively, that limit the position of women. Therefore, this study will interrogate the experience of African women as inscribed in these selected texts, uncovering the literary expressions of gender oppression as well as the possibilities of empowerment. The selected texts will be analyzed through the lens of Gender studies, African feminism and Cultural studies. From these theories, the focus of the study is on the struggles of the female characters living in patriarchal societies as well as on the idea that gender is constructed socially and culturally in the African context. In conclusion, the emergence of these renowned female African writers together with the emancipation of African countries from colonial supremacy has opened a space for women to compensate and correct the stereotyped female images in African literature and post- colonial societies. Most contemporary African writers like Buchi Emecheta, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Sindiwe Magona, Mariama Bâ and Neshani Andreas have shown that women are seeking to attain empowerment. As a result, this study can be viewed as an opportunity to highlight such experiences by continuing to interrogate the writings of African women writers and to explore their gender-based themes so as to inform and or inspire the implementation of women empowerment. It will broaden and encourage further academic discussion in the field of Cultural studies and gender criticism of women‟s literature within the African context.

The specific objectives of the study were to (1) explore factors which influence the retention of truck drivers from the perspectives of immediate supervisors of these drivers at Tanker Services Branches in Durban, Johannesburg, and Cape Town; (2) to identify the means Tanker Services adopts in meeting factors influential to truck driver retention; and (3) to provide recommendations on how to successfully retain truck drivers in this logistics organisation in South Africa. The research methodology of this study involved interviewing ten immediate managers of truck drivers at Tanker Services, Imperial Logistics. Specifically, data was collected through the use of individual, in-depth and semi-structured interviews to investigate the most influential factors affecting truck driver retention. The results of this research outline factors important to the truck drivers at Tanker Services from the perspectives of their immediate supervisors - most of whom were previously truck drivers themselves. The findings of this research identified the general factors that affect Tanker Services Truck drivers as follows: formal and informal rewards, competitive compensation, a work environment of quality equipment, high safety standards and recreational facilities. Furthermore, interpersonal relations and company reputation were found most influential to truck drivers in this South African logistics context.

Governments too can leverage the advantages of adopting cloud computing. A review of the literature reveals a gap in research on the adoption of cloud computing by the South African public sector. Limited research has been done on the topic of cloud computing and none of them are from a quantitative perspective. This study set out to answer the question, “What is the extent (current state, benefits, barriers and readiness levels) of the adoption of cloud computing by the South Africa public sector?” The study is of much value to the public sector of South Africa and other countries and organisations wanting to understand what to consider when adopting cloud computing. The study used a survey research strategy that was exploratory in nature. The sample comprised government CIO’s and government Senior IT management. Questionnaires were sent via a web link and 51 responses were completed. The results revealed that more than half of the South African public sector has adopted cloud computing; however there is a lack of visibility of government initiatives that promote cloud computing. The study shows that public organisations that have adopted cloud computing significantly perceive more benefits of cloud computing than organisations that are yet to adopt. The Technology Organisation Environment (TOE) framework tested the barriers to adoption, revealing areas of concern that are limiting successful cloud computing adoption and adoption rates. The study uncovers a timeline for further cloud computing adoption in the South African public sector.

Many lawyers, trade unions and employees launch or oppose review applications in the Labour Court on behalf of employers or employees. In observing this litigation process, it became clear that practitioners make two fundamental mistakes. Firstly they do not appreciate the distinction between reviews and appeals and / or, secondly, they misconstrue the Sidumo test in seeking to review or defend an arbitration award. This causes serious prejudice to their clients and results in delays in labour dispute resolution which is contrary to the spirit and purpose of the Labour Relations Act,2 as amended (LRA). The application of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa,3 legislation and case law is fundamental to the review of arbitration awards and the role of arbitrators in that process. During the course of this research paper, reference is been made to the Constitution, legislation, case law, academic papers and journal articles. The references are mostly precedent setting and authoritative in relation to reviewable irregularities in arbitration awards. The purpose of this paper is guide and assist labour court practitioners to analyse arbitration awards and identify reviewable irregularities in order to determine whether it meets the bandwidth of reasonableness within the context of the Constitution and LRA. In doing so, practitioners will be able to successfully review awards without unduly delaying the dispute resolution process. During the research process, one of the important findings was that there has been inconsistent jurisprudence relating to the application of the grounds of review and the review test itself as per Sidumo which blurred the distinction between reviews and appeals. South Africa, in particular, has experienced a large degree of negative feedback with respect to the ability of the government and its municipal departments to provide basic services to citizens. This has led to a number of service delivery protests throughout the country. To remedy this, the ability of the municipality to provide basic services needs to be assessed in order for improvements to be made. A first step in this process would be to determine the efficiency with which municipalities are providing these services. This study focuses on a particular municipal service, namely electricity distribution. Primarily, the efficiency with which municipalities provide electricity to consumers is determined. This is achieved using the parametric cost frontier approach, which is appropriate since municipalities aim to reduce the costs incurred in distributing electricity. The municipalities are compared to a frontier (theoretical best practice) from which inferences on their performances can be made. Those municipalities whose performances are not optimal, deviate from the frontier. The deviations (errors) are then assumed to be caused by two factors, namely stochastic random noise and inefficiency. This composition accounts for effects for which municipalities cannot control (stochastic random noise) and those for which it can (inefficiency). The parametric nature of the cost frontier approach allows for distributional assumptions to be made on these factors. Stochastic random noise is always assumed to be normally distributed, while inefficiency is assumed to be one-sided and positively skewed.

Dialogues of sexualities: An action research project

- Description: Risky and abusive sexual behaviours, stemming largely from inequitable gendered norms, are a pervasive feature of the South African socio-sexual landscape. Literature shows that sexuality education programmes can be effective in reducing risky sexual practices, but South African school sexuality education has been shown to be largely inadequate. The question arises as to how to engage with high school learners about sexualities in meaningful ways. In an attempt to answer this, I implemented a dialogical sexuality action research project at a lower middle class urban high school. Freirian principles of critical consciousness and dialogical pedagogy were utilized, and these were infused with feminist post-structural understandings of a discursively constituted subject. The initial consultative process started in 2012 with two projects at the school. Data from these projects, and a further consultation with the school principal, provided baseline information on the gendered norms and the sexuality education in the school. I then instituted a dialogical sexuality intervention with a group of Grade 10 learners, aiming to bring gendered and sexual norms to visibility, to trouble them (thereby promoting participants’ critical consciousness around gendered norms), and to provide recognition for participants in a variety of subject positions. Ten sessions were conducted, with the focus of each session being planned by the group. The action research project attempted to promote understandings of the processes required to facilitate such aims. The dialogical format of the group generated curiosity and engagement, and there were suggestions that some participants were taking up safe-sex messages in a reflexive manner. A partial normalisation of some ‘hidden’ aspects of sex, particularly around issues pertaining to female sexuality, was enabled, and critical consciousness around the gendered inequities in ‘cheating’ was promoted. However, abstinence was relatively silenced, and male same-sex remained heavily stigmatised. No substantial action component beyond the group meetings was generated. Participant feedback indicated that they placed great value on the dialogical processes in the group, and that they enjoyed being able to talk about sexual and other personal aspects of their lives. I theorise that the value of the group was in the recognition that participants received as they were positioned in a variety of subject positions. Whilst dialogue was shown to be extremely valuable, there were suggestions that other, non-dialogical modes of recognition were also needed by participants.

Movement patterns of Cape stumpnose, Rhabdosargus holubi (Sparidae), in the Kowie Estuary, South Africa

Although aspects of its recruitment dynamics from sea to estuary have received considerable research attention, little is known about its movement behaviour within estuarine systems. Fishery surveys have also revealed that R. holubi is a dominant species in catches within several temperate estuaries in South Africa. Therefore, investigating movement behaviour is fundamental to understanding the ecology of this species and providing a means for implementing effective fisheries management strategies. This study made use of passive acoustic telemetry to quantify the movement patterns of juvenile R. holubi in the Kowie Estuary, in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Previous studies have revealed that surgically implanted transmitters may have adverse effects on the physiology and behaviour of tagged fish. Therefore, due to the small size of juvenile R. holubi, an a priori transmitter-effect experiment was undertaken. This experiment revealed that juvenile R. holubi (146-217 mm fork length) were not adversely affected by the surgical implantation of acoustic transmitters (7 mm Ø, 1.6 g out of water) and hence acoustic telemetry was well suited to monitoring the movements of this species. A 4-month telemetry study evaluated the movement patterns of 21 juveniles (140-190 mm fork length) tagged in three equal batches along the length of the estuary. Specific aspects of their movement included space use patterns, habitat connectivity, and the influences of geophysical cycles and environmental variables. Tagged fish exhibited high residency, which varied between each release site area. The mean length of estuary used was greater for the upper batch (15.65 ± 6.49 km) than the middle and lower batches (7.36 ± 3.68 and 2.67 ± 2 km, respectively). In terms of habitat connectivity, once the tagged fish left the estuary, they generally did not return. Tagged R. holubi spent the majority (83%) of their monitoring periods within the estuarine environment, with the sea (16%) and riverine (1%) environments being utilised to a lesser extent. Diel and tidal cycles influenced the movement patterns of juvenile R. holubi. However, the high levels of residency meant that fine-scale movements were difficult to detect due to the acoustic receiver deployment configuration (i.e. receivers moored one kilometer apart). The influence of environmental variables on the movement of individuals, modelled with general linear mixed models (GLMMs), revealed that the effects of river inflow and water temperature were greatest. Increased river inflow caused individuals to use larger portions of the estuary. Increased water temperature, particularly river temperature, caused individuals to shift their distributions downstream (towards the mouth of the estuary). This study highlighted the importance of estuarine nursery habitats to R. holubi, suggesting that a loss or reduction of healthy estuarine habitats may lead to significant declines in the abundance of this species. Furthermore, extreme resident behaviour suggests that no-take area closures (estuarine protected areas) would be an effective management strategy for this important fishery species.

In this study, I argue that these two writers share a preoccupation with the strictures placed on the individual by his/her location in language and discourse. I show that they deconstruct subjectivity with a view to intimating the possibility of momentarily transcending discursive control, and thereby inhabiting authentic selfhood. In addition, I demonstrate that both authors draw attention to the nature of language through their thematisation of madness, and I then trace the implications of this nexus between language and madness for the reader, who of course is a subject in language. My contention in this regard is that Carey and Kundera seek to instil in the reader a self-reflexive awareness of the ways in which his/her location in language shapes his/her perception of others. This dissertation proposes a new point of departure, enriched by historical and philosophical understandings of the human body, from which the biokineticist can begin to redefine him/herself. The study aims to shift biokinetics as a practice away from the reductionist and dehumanising influences of instrumentalist, scientific and neoliberal capitalist-economic discourses, and to restore to biokineticists, and their clients, the ability they need to interact as relatively autonomous individuals. The study draws on the ideas of Michel Foucault, specifically on his notions for ‘discipline’, ‘docility’, and ‘the care of the self’ (1991; 2005), as well as Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari and their ideas of ‘becoming’ and ‘rhizomatic thinking’ (1983; 1987); ultimately presenting a philosophically enriched, holistic representation of the human body. From here recommendations for best practice in contemporary biokinetics are suggested that encourage interactions and connections between the professional and his/her patients, which move beyond the mere physiological interpretations currently dominating health discourse.

A standard questionnaire was developed, incorporating Ajzen’s (2002) conceptual and methodological considerations. The self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 974 members of the public from diverse backgrounds. The response rate was 21%, with 203 questionnaires being returned. The final sample size was 156, due to 47 questionnaires being incorrectly completed. The results from the study were largely consistent with the existing literature. A remarkable finding was the strong degree of multi-collinearity displayed between attitude and subjective norms. For this reason, t-stats were used (instead of regression coefficients) to compare the strength of the relationships between the independent and dependent variables. The model explained 34% of the variation in intention to use an outdoor gym. Subjective norms had the strongest significant effect on intentions. Outdoor gym installations are growing globally, as well as in South Africa and local governments regard outdoor gyms as an inexpensive solution to improving public health (Madren, 2013). This study can assist in the design of future physical activity intervention programs. The findings of the study are important as there are a number of public benefits of exercising at outdoor gyms (Madren, 2013: 1). The results of the study revealed the importance of subjective norms in the context of outdoor gyms. The findings further suggested that a special relationship existed between attitudes and subjective norms, which should be considered for effective health interventions. The role of perceived behaviour control is also significant and intervention campaigns should consider a number of proposals suggested in the study.

This study shows that gamers come into contact with various ethico-moral dilemmas during gameplay and act in an egoistic manner in order to complete video games. Firstly, an explanation of game and gameplay are provided as well as an outline of two game studies methodologies, namely narratology and ludology. These two methodologies are then combined into a hybrid approach which is used to analyse the video games from both a narrative and gameplay point of view which allows for a more comprehensive analysis of each respective game. Thereafter, a discussion of B.F. Skinner's behaviourism is given in order to better understand gamer behaviour. Skinner's concepts of positive reinforcement, schedules of reinforcement and operant conditioning are then linked to video games to show behaviourism's influences on game design. Ethical egoism, as theorised by Thomas Hobbes and Jesse Kalin, provides the ethico-moral theory necessary for the analysis of the morality mechanic in each game. Ethico-moral dilemmas identified within each game are discussed with regards to the hybrid approach which details both narrative and gameplay consequences of in-game ethico-moral decision making. The study concludes that gamers are ethical egoists when engaged in gameplay, due to their desire to complete the video game. However, during gameplay, gamers are exposed to altruism which is often promoted through the narrative and the nature of in-game objectives. Suggestions for further studies are also given for example a more detailed analysis of gamer behaviour, a qualitative study of in-game ethico-moral actions as well as a study of games that are non-violent in nature.

The National Development Plan as outlined by the National Planning Commission (2011) identified education as one of the pillars from which South Africa’s economy will be driven. However, recent studies have rated South Africa’s education system as one of the worst among middle income economies and sometimes even worse than many low-income African economies. To bridge that gap, there is a need to drive schools to be centres of excellence. This study sought to identify factors that influence a performance culture in schools. In order to achieve this objective, literature was scanned and five factors that influence a performance culture were identified (organisational school climate, teacher attitude, school managerial processes, organisational school value and organisational school structure). These factors were initially identified and used by Marcoulides and Heck (1993) in a corporate organisation and later adopted for testing in a school setting by Gomez, Marcoulides and Heck (2012). A school in Johannesburg East district was sampled through convenience sampling and data was collected through a questionnaire which was administered to the principal, teachers and staff, school governing board members, parents and alumni of the school. The total sample was 120 and a total of 94 questionnaires were returned giving a response rate of 78 percent. Descriptive statistical techniques were performed to establish the mean and standard deviation of perceptions among the respondents. Inferential statistical techniques were used to measure and ascertain reliability through Cronbach’s alpha, comparisons of responses through t-testing and ANOVA, association through correlation and hypotheses were tested through multiple regression analysis. All the variables were found to be valid and reliable. Furthermore, statistical results revealed that in the sampled school, even though all the five factors had an association among each other, only organisational school culture and organisational school value had an association to the dependent variable, performance culture. Organisational school value, however, was found to be the only variable of great influence to performance culture at the sampled school. The ideologies and activities that represent the values, therefore, influence the performance culture of a school.

A core tenet of urban sustainability, urban forestry, is poised to “go global” with the intent of mitigating the negative environmental and social effects of urbanisation through green infrastructure, spaces and trees. Amongst these, the planting of street trees has become a major strategy. The public functions of street trees as demonstrated through the provision of ecosystem services are highly dependent on the structure, composition and diversity of tree species within the urban forest. The bulk of available literature on the composition, diversity and perceptions of residents regarding street trees has largely focused on the developed world, while the few in the developing world have been conducted at only one or two sites. The aim of this study was to investigate the composition, diversity and density of urban street trees in relation to the perceptions of local residents and horticulturists, across a range of ecological and social contexts. To do this, the species composition, diversity and dominance of street trees planted in 10 randomly selected Eastern Cape towns was assessed. Within each town ten replicate 200 m transects were located in three different suburbs. Perceptions and appreciation of street trees were assessed by 1 200 household questionnaires, as well as key informant interviews with personnel responsible for street tree planting and maintenance. Sixty-nine out of 300 sampled transects had street trees, with 888 trees enumerated, spanning ninety-seven species. Alien tree species accounted for 71 % of all the enumerated trees while indigenous trees species accounted for 12 %. The non-former homeland towns had a significantly higher (5.8±1.6 trees) mean street tree density per transect than the former homeland towns (0.6±03). There were no significant relationships between street tree density or richness to mean annual rainfall or the background biome in which the town was situated. However, density strongly was related to size of the town. RDP and township suburbs had fewer street trees and low species richness relative to the affluent suburbs. In selecting street trees, root system of the prospective tree, the eventual size or shape of the species, whether an alien or indigenous species, and the species’ adaptability to the climate of the respective town are considered before planting. The biggest identified threats to street trees were the deliberate vandalism of trees by people and animals, and lack of education and awareness regarding the importance of street trees among urban residents and municipal officials. More than half of the respondents prefer that trees be planted both on the street and in their yards while a few do not want trees at all. The majority of respondents with this preference do so because they want shade and abundant fruit, and to have beautiful yards and streets. Those who do not want trees at all do so because they just do not like trees, there is no space for trees, or they fear that criminals hide behind trees. The presence of trees in peoples’ yards correlated with a positive preference for trees in the street. The majority of respondents were neither satisfied with the general appearance of their street nor with the number of trees on their street. Residents from the RDP suburbs were the least satisfied with both the appearance and number of trees on their streets, while those from the affluent suburbs were the most satisfied. Street trees were seen as greatly important to have by the majority of people. The more educated people were more appreciative of the importance of street trees. Local municipalities were identified by the majority of respondents as the stakeholders responsible for the planting and maintenance of street trees, although a considerable proportion of respondents reported a willingness to volunteer to help plant and maintain trees on their streets. Municipalities were seen as doing very little to provide and maintain trees in the various suburbs by the majority of respondents. The majority of respondents also reported that they had never been consulted about tree planting activities in their suburbs before, and would like to have been consulted.

In selecting street trees, root system of the prospective tree, the eventual size or shape of the species, whether an alien or indigenous species, and the species’ adaptability to the climate of the respective town are considered before planting. The biggest identified threats to street trees were the deliberate vandalism of trees by people and animals, and lack of education and awareness regarding the importance of street trees among urban residents and municipal officials. More than half of the respondents prefer that trees be planted both on the street and in their yards while a few do not want trees at all. The majority of respondents with this preference do so because they want shade and abundant fruit, and to have beautiful yards and streets. Those who do not want trees at all do so because they just do not like trees, there is no space for trees, or they fear that criminals hide behind trees. The presence of trees in peoples’ yards correlated with a positive preference for trees in the street. The majority of respondents were neither satisfied with the general appearance of their street nor with the number of trees on their street. Residents from the RDP suburbs were the least satisfied with both the appearance and number of trees on their streets, while those from the affluent suburbs were the most satisfied. Street trees were seen as greatly important to have by the majority of people. The more educated people were more appreciative of the importance of street trees. Local municipalities were identified by the majority of respondents as the stakeholders responsible for the planting and maintenance of street trees, although a considerable proportion of respondents reported a willingness to volunteer to help plant and maintain trees on their streets. Municipalities were seen as doing very little to provide and maintain trees in the various suburbs by the majority of respondents. The majority of respondents also reported that they had never been consulted about tree planting activities in their suburbs before, and would like to have been consulted.

Individualism, collectivism and gender as correlates of the work ethic among the employees in a government department in the Eastern Cape

- Description: This study investigated the relationship between individualism, collectivism and gender among the employees at the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development situated in East London, South Africa. Individualism, collectivism and gender were used as independent variables in the study while the work ethic was used as the dependent variable. Data was gathered from a random sample of 260 employees in the Department. A questionnaire consisting of three parts was used for data collection. To gather biographical and occupational data, a self-designed 5-item questionnaire was used. The 65 item Multidimensional Work Ethic Profile (MWEP) scale Miller et al. (2002) was used to measure the work ethic. A 16-item individualism/collectivism scale (also known as the Culture Orientation Scale) formulated by Triandis & Gelfand (1998) was used in the research to measure individualism/collectivism. Data analysis was done by means of various statistical techniques, including the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Technique and Multiple Regression Analysis. The results indicated that there is a significant positive correlation between individualism and the work ethic, noting that a positive correlation for individualism implies a negative correlation for collectivism. The results of this study also found males showing to have higher work ethic than females. The results indicated that individualism/collectivism and gender together do not account for a higher proportion of variance in work ethic than any of the two separately. The study, therefore, recommends that managers must do all in their power to promote the growth and development of work ethic in their organisations through encouraging individualism, and through striving to increase the work ethic in females.
