Mapping the importance of public participation in the expropriation of land without compensation bill: a case of Silver Town in KwaZakhele, Port Elizabeth

- Description: The post-1994 era in the South African public imagination was envisaged to herald widespread and transformative efforts to reverse the gross injustices and human rights violations inflicted over many decades of apartheid and colonialism. One of the key measures initiated by the democratic government to drive this nation building project was the land reform programme. The ‘land question’, which is a popular tagline in South Africa when reference is made to land reform, has come to define the general discourse of socioeconomic disadvantage and change in the post-apartheid and post-colonial period – similarly to other former settler colonies in the African continent and the broader Global South. For South Africa though, this specific issue has been characterised by numerous challenges and failures largely at the level of the state, wherein a significant lack of public engagement, public participation and democratic redistribution was not being done according to ‘the will of the people’. On a number of occasions, the South African state has gone on a ‘solo crusade’ to implement the land reform programme under complex conditions that are largely unfavoured by ordinary people ‘on the ground’ – especially those who were the primary victims of land dispossession under colonialism and apartheid. As a result, over the past few years, indigenous black communities across the country especially in (semi)urban and township areas have voluntarily ‘occupied’ land at their own will and sometimes ‘illegally’, as a way to take up settlement space and determine their lives on the land of their birth. Beyond the public discourse of ‘land invasions’ and ‘failed land reform projects’, this study was conducted to closely understand the extent to which public engagement and participation has been integral in the systematic mechanism(s) to transform the patterns of land ownership and control in the democratic South Africa. To do this, the site of KwaZakhele, Silvertown, in Port Elizabeth was selected to conduct the study. This township is an outcome of apartheid geography and land dispossession where many generations of indigenous black people were displaced. Today, it is a struggling community characterised by high rates of poverty and unemployment – and one of its unresolved socio-political issues is the question of the skewed patterns of land ownership in the area. Methodologically, qualitative semi-structured interviews were utilised to conduct the study and the Marxist Concept of Citizenship was selected as a theoretical framework for the study by the researcher. The study has found that, amongst the general legislative and political shortfalls of public participation breakdown, there are other deep seated structural socioeconomic issues that are at the root of the problem – such as economic inequalities and very low prospects of social mobility – which collectively reproduce the persistent inadequacies of political instability and social unrest in the area. The study recommends an astute combination of ‘bottom-up’ active citizenship and major socioeconomic transformation in the area as a systematic and structural mechanism to empower the community of Silvertown to be the champion of its own liberation struggle for the freedom of its people to own land and democratically participate in their own governance, self-determination, and prosperity. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, School of Governmental and Social Sciences, 2021

- Description: The study assesses the outcomes and impact of Municipal Support and Intervention Programme which was implemented in the study sites of Blue Crane Route and Kouga Local Municipalities, which are falling under Sarah Baartman District Municipality, in the Province of Eastern Cape, in the Republic of South Africa. The researcher’s study is an attempt to pursue and record the foot-prints left by Municipal Support and Intervention Programme (MSIP) in these study sites in order to determine the potential extended implementation of the programme in other municipalities with similar challenges of political instability, poor governance, poor audit opinions, unsound financial management systems leading to poor and unsustainable municipal service delivery. The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) conducted a diagnosis on the performance of the then 45municipalities (2007/08 Financial Year) and identified challenges of similar nature but different degrees in fifteen municipalities from the erstwhile Transkei Administration. The municipalities comprised: 2 Metropolitans, 37 Locals and 6 Districts. The diagnostic results compelled COGTA and National Treasury to develop a Municipal Support and Intervention Framework (MSIF) which was piloted in those 15 municipalities then and later adopted as a fully-fledged programme, referred to above as MSIP by the Member of Executive Committee (MEC) for COGTA and Mayors in September, 2014 at Komani (Queenstown). x The concern of the researcher is, in spite of numerous efforts by National and Provincial Departments and Treasuries, it has been observed that some municipalities are still faced with challenges of political instability, poor governance and unsound financial management/financial variability which result to poor municipal service delivery. The latter challenges manifest themselves in protests by the citizenry, poor external audit results due to ineffective political oversight coupled with the lack of scarce and critical professional technical skills. A review of existing literature assists the researcher to identify the key concepts of relevance to the study and assists the investigator to become knowledgeable to the limits, challenges and the language of the type of the research they plan to conduct. The research questions or hypothesis are as follows: • What is the understanding of Municipal Support and Intervention Programme by Blue Crane Route and Kouga Local Municipalities towards service delivery? • Which factors have influenced the effectiveness of the implementation of Municipal Support and Intervention Programme in Blue Crane Route and Kouga Local Municipalities? • What are the recommendations for improved implementation of Municipal Support and Intervention Programme in Blue Crane Route and Kouga Local Municipalities? The aim of this study is to assess the impact of Municipal Support and Intervention Programme (MSIP) Implementation by the Provincial Administration at the municipal level, with special reference to Blue Crane Route and Kouga Municipalities. The objectives of the research are: xi • To explore understanding of the Municipal Support and Intervention Programme in Blue Crane Route and Kouga Local Municipalities. • To explore the factors which influence the effectiveness of the Municipal Support and Intervention Programme in Blue Crane Route and Kouga Local Municipalities • To explore some findings on the study of Municipal Support and Intervention Programme in Blue Crane Route and Kouga Local Municipalities. • To explore recommendations towards improving the implementation of the Municipal Support and Intervention Programme in Blue Crane Route and Kouga Local Municipalities. Qualitative and Quantitative Methodologies were utilised for data gathering in the two study sites. The study concluded that when the above-mentioned challenges are existing in a municipality, they will manifest themselves through the demonstrations by citizenry which sometimes lead to damage of infrastructure. It is therefore, recommended that the three spheres of government should go back to the drawing board when deploying councillors in municipality by considering basic relevant educational qualifications because the Local Government Sector is highly legislated and complicated. The learning curve is sometimes a bit longer during a five-year elections term. This should be the same considerations when technocrats are being appointed at the level of Section 54 and 56, in terms of Municipal Systems Act, No. 32 of 2000, especially in the area of scarce and critical professional skills. In the case of educational, training and development gaps, the National Department of Co-operative Governance, National Treasury and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), could enhance upskilling supporting politicians and municipal senior managers with accredited and refresher courses

- Description: The theory of sustainable development has received worldwide acceptance, and is characterised by the protection of environmental quality, social justice and economic development to ensure a quality of life for future generations. The concepts of sustainable development have transcended to all aspects of society, including the built environment through the Habitat Agenda and building sustainability rating tools. The thesis investigates the implications of sustainable development on how it relates to the building construction industry in South Africa. The study sought to evaluate the extent of consideration and motivation for the incorporation of sustainability criteria in building design, using the case of the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity wet collection facility in Grahamstown. The goal of the thesis was achieved by evaluating sustainability considerations and barriers to adoption of sustainability criteria in the design of the SAlAB building, the rating of the building against the LEED ™ criteria, and evaluation of the applicability of the LEED ™ in the South African context. The importance of the research emanates from the fact that, despite the proliferation of sustainable development and sustainability rating tools in the world, there is no widely used building sustainability rating tool in South Africa, even though the country is industrialising with a very active built environment. The study therefore contributes to the body of knowledge necessary for the implementation of a building rating tool in the country, through an understanding of barriers to implementation. The research method used in the study was a case study with the intention of obtaining the design professional's considerations and challenges in the context of designing the SAIAB building. The case study used multiple data collection methods, with primary information obtained from interviews of professionals involved in the design of the building, whilst additional information was from analysis of technical drawings and review of literature on the subject. The findings of the research showed that there is an understanding of sustainability and consideration in the building industry even though there is no targeted intent to meet sustainability goals. The barriers to building sustainability were identified as lack of regulation, incentives, access to land, awareness, availability of professional codes and standards, economic costs and capacity. These barriers translated into a relatively low score, a silver rating for the SAlAB building when using the LEEDTM rating system. The implications of the findings suggests a need for the development of a comprehensive building sustainability rating tool suited for the South African context, with performance standards and a technical manual to support it. This should however be done in an environment where sustainability goals are supported by regulation and incentives have been developed.

The unemployment trend in the country continues and is a reflection of symptoms and problems that impede the effectiveness of government initiatives such as the tender system. The main aim of this study was to establish the factors influencing the scalability of tenderpreneurs in South Africa. Further objectives intended to establish the factors that would enable tenderpreneurs to scale their businesses, to define the characteristics of a tenderpreneur in South Africa, to determine the factors that influence the growth of tenderpreneurs in South Africa and to establish the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities for and threats to the scalability of tenderpreneurs in South Africa. In order to achieve the said objectives, a sample of ten tenderpreneurs from the Ilembe District in KwaZulu-Natal, was selected from an estimated population of over 50 tenderpreneurs in the region, using the convenience sampling technique. The phenomenological paradigm was employed and qualitative research was done using the exploratory research design. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data for the study. The findings of this study characterised a tenderpreneur as an individual bent on providing requested services, engaging in competitive bidding, usually awaiting opportunities or bids, who do business with or without prior capital. In the political front, the advent of the end of the apartheid era, the emergence of the democratic movement and emancipation of the black majority contributed to the drive towards business ownership by the previously disadvantaged groups. Recommendations made included the fact that the relevant government authorities should assist in supporting the tenderpreneurs through a number of policy and political initiatives such as ensuring broader stakeholder participation, fostering established public funded partnerships, mainstreaming corporate social investment to uplift communities, enforce sustainable business practices and drive infrastructure development.

- Description: This research is focused on the premise that Creative and Cultural Industries (CCIs) can be a precondition for the attainment of sustainable livelihoods. It follows, logically, that the efficient and effective implementation of CCIs has potential in transforming the well-being of those involved in the industries as evidence points to the notion that the CCIs can help deal with the persistent challenges of unemployment and poverty. Without effective and efficient implementation, and the political will to support such industries in the South African context, the potential of CCIs in improving the livelihoods of citizens will not be realised. Given the limitations levelled against the policy implementation and the processes involved in support for creative industries in South Africa, the qualitative method was used as an investigative strategy to gain a deeper understanding of CCIs and its general contribution on sustainable livelihoods in the Eastern Cape Province. The findings indicate that there is a basis for a creative economy in the Eastern Cape Province that can be improved by properly concerted action by all actors. There is a foundation for the development of innovative goods and services that could promote the integration of the Province into the global economy. So far, the outcome of this research points to the direction of offering knowledge of the way to realize the potential of Eastern Cape Province`s creative industries. The study utilised a qualitative research approach and a qualitative research paradigm in the form of case study research design. In terms of data collection, the study applied an in-depth one-on-one interviews and focus group discussions. Furthermore, the study employed non-probability sampling, specifically snowball sampling, and sampled twenty (20) participants. These comprised ten (10) learners, three (3) Life Orientation (LO) teachers and seven (7) key informants (School Governing Body (SGB) members and the school principal). In addition, the study employed a qualitative data analysis approach, with data being analysed thematically. The study established that there is no single cause of deviant behaviour among school learners but a series of distinct factors contributing towards deviant behaviour in various ways, such as use of drugs, low self-esteem, poor upbringing, and poor academic performance. Other factors included negative peer group influence, social media, and lack of self-discipline as well as lack of moral values and negative self-concept. The study concludes that through implementation of awareness campaigns, deviance policy, educational programmes, sport and recreational activities, safety and security, and social and behavioural change programmes, deviant behaviour can be addressed at school. Furthermore, it can be concluded that good behaviour among learners are central to effective teaching and learning at school; therefore, this should be inculcated in the learners. In light of the above findings, the Department of Education (DoE), policy makers, and school administrators should ensure that schools are provided with adequate facilities for teaching and learning, sports and recreational activities as well as information communication technologies and internet connectivity. Globally the use of antenatal care services remains a challenge and this tendency is closely associated with maternal and neonatal mortalities and morbidities. South Africa has adopted a free service policy for pregnant women, their infants and for children up to the age of six. Despite this policy, the problem of limited utilisation of antenatal care services by pregnant women is still observed in this country and is associated with increased maternal and neonatal mortalities and morbidities.The purpose of the current proposed study was to explore and describe the reasons for limited utilisation of antenatal care services in the Mnquma sub-district, and to develop guidelines to assist the midwives to encourage the use of antenatal care services. Objectives:To explore and describe the reasons for the limited utilisation of antenatal care services by pregnant women at Mnquma sub-district.To explore and describe the knowledge of antenatal care services by the pregnant women.To develop guidelines to facilitate empowerment of midwives to enhance utilisation of antenatal care services by pregnant women in the Mnquma sub-district in Eastern Cape Province. The study was conducted in Mnquma sub-district during the months of July to January in 2016 using a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design. The research population were post-delivery women and the purposive sampling was used to identify women who met the stated criteria. One-on-one audio-taped semi-structured interviews were conducted and field notes were kept to justify some of the themes identified. Thirteen interviews were conducted and transcribed verbatim. Collected data was analysed using Tesch’s data analysis method. Trustworthiness was maintained through the standards of truth value, credibility, transferability, dependability and conformability. The ethical considerations of beneficence, justice, autonomy, non-maleficence and veracity were maintained. From the findings it emerged that the participants raised various concerns with regard to barriers influencing limited utilization of antenatal care services. The participants had limited knowledge of antenatal care services. Furthermore, participants recommended some solutions to enhance utilization of antenatal care services. Recommendations were made with regard to clinical practice, nursing education and nursing research. Guidelines were formulated to assist midwives to enhance the utilization of antenatal care services by pregnant women in the Mnquma sub-district in the Eastern Cape.

The effect of muscle type and freezing on the evolution of physico-chemical properties during processing of South African biltong and its final textural properties

- Description: The study investigated the effect of muscle type and freezing on evaluation of mass transfer during processing physico-chemical of South African biltong and its textural properties. In the first experimental phase of this study, mass transfers, physico-chemical and textural properties (hardness, cohesiveness, springiness, and chewiness) of commercially produced biltong from biceps femoris (BF) and semitendinosus (ST) (n=9) were measured. Biltong was dried at 30oC and 40% relative humidity until it had lost 50% of its initial weight. The initial moisture content, water activity (Aw) of BF muscles (74.3% and 0.992) were significantly lower compared those of ST muscles (75.4% and 0.994%). The fat content of BF (2.3%) muscles was higher (P<0.05) than in ST muscles (1.7%). The salt, weight and water gain for the BF muscle were 2.3%, -2.6% and -7.0% respectively and were significantly higher than those of ST muscles which were 2.1, -0.4 and -4.0, respectively. After drying, the moisture content, Aw, and pH were lower in BF (42.2, 0.886 and 5.29) than those of ST muscles (45.1, 0.911 and 5.42). The salt content was higher (P<0.05) in BF muscle than in ST. Among textural properties, hardness was significantly higher in biltong from the BF (233.0N), while the springiness was significantly lower compared to the ST muscle (178.2N). Therefore, it was concluded that the use of different muscles results in variation of biltong physicochemical characteristics. The second experiment investigated the effect of freezing and muscle type on mass transfers, lipid oxidation, physico-chemical and textural properties of biltong. In this experiment, the iii ST muscles were replaced with semimembranosus (SM) muscles. A total of 12 beef muscles were used, with six BF and six SM muscles frozen in a blast freezer at -40 oC till they reached -20oC; then they were transferred to -20oC for 14 days. The thawing loss for the BF and ST muscles was 1.3 and 2.4% respectively, but there were no significant (P>0.05) differences. The protein and salt content were significantly higher in frozen-thawed (24.3 and 0.13%) muscles than in fresh muscle (20.2 and 0.08%); whereas the fat content and pH were lower (P<0.05) in frozen-thawed (5.36) compared to fresh muscles (5.51). Between muscles, the moisture, salt content, and pH were higher in BF muscles than in SM muscles (73.2, 0.12% and 5.49). Aw was affected by the interaction between freezing and muscle type, with frozenthawed SM having lower Aw (0.990). During salting, salt, weight and water gain did not show any differences (P<0.05). There were no major significant differences after salting. There were lower TBARS and pH in frozen-thawed (1.5mgMDA/kg and 5.15) muscles than in fresh muscles (3.3mgMDA/kg and 5.19) as well as in SM muscles (1.8mgMDA/kg and 5.16) than in BF muscles (3.0mgMDA/kg and 5.19). The moisture was significantly lower in frozen-thawed SM (68.1%) than in fresh SM, BF and frozen-thawed BF (69.3,70.5 and 71.7%) after salting. On the final product, the interaction between muscle type and freezing affected the moisture content, TBARS, chewiness and the springiness of biltong, with the biltong from fresh SM (39.8%) having significantly lower moisture content compared frozenthawed BF and ST muscles as well fresh BF muscles (42.8% in average). The TBARS were higher in biltong from fresh BF muscles (5.1mgMDA/kg) compared to other muscles. Furthermore, the chewiness and springiness were higher (P<0.05) in biltong produced from SM frozen-thawed muscles (327.7N and 1.5). The WBSF was higher in biltong from the BF muscles (108.8N) than in the biltong from SM (80.1) but it was not affected by the freezing effect (P>0.05). Freezing did not show any major differences in biltong. iv The third experiment was conducted to determine the effect of freezing African buffalo carcasses on weight loss during salting, physico-chemical and textural properties of biltong. Five muscles (ST, SM, BF, LTL, and RF) were randomly selected from 30 carcasses (15 frozen-thawed and 15 fresh), cut along the grain, traditionally salted and dried at 26oC till they lost 45-50% of their initial weight. The salting weight loss was higher in frozen-thawed muscles (-1.45%) than in fresh muscles (-0.89%). The freezing treatment affected the physico-chemical properties of the biltong. The biltong produced from frozen-thawed muscles showed significantly higher protein and ash (47.6 and 7.6%) compared to fresh (43.9 and 7.1); whereas the moisture, fat, pH and Aw were lower (43.7, 2.1, 0.870 and 5.30, respectively) compared to those of biltong from fresh muscles (45.5%, 2.9%, 0.890 and 5.38). The moisture, pH and fat content were further affected by muscle type. The interactive effect was observed in salt content, with RF frozen-thawed showing higher salt content (8.2%) compared to all other muscles. The hardness and WBSF were significantly higher (P<0.05) in biltong frozen-thawed (204.1N and 135.0N) than in fresh muscles (146.2N and 113.1N). Moreover, the chewiness and springiness were affected (P<0.05) by muscle type, with RF muscle having higher springiness 0.89 and chewiness 171.1N than all the other muscles. Therefore, it can be concluded that freezing buffalo carcasses significantly influenced the quality characteristics of biltong. The fourth experiment studied the effect of drying methods on physico-chemical properties of traditional biltong produced from African buffalo muscles. The BF and SM muscles were randomly selected from 15 fresh carcasses, cut into strips, salted and divided into two batches per muscle. The first batch of each muscle type was dried in the ambient-air drier at 22oC average and the second batch in the cabinet drier at 26 oC till 45-50% weight loss. No differences (P>0.05) were observed in salting weight loss between the drying method and muscle type. The protein content was significantly higher in SM (46%) muscles compared to v BF (43%) but there was no effect (P>0.05) caused by the drying method. The interactions between the muscle type and drying method affected the fat content, with biltong from airdried BF muscles having significant lower (2.1%) fat content. There were no significant differences in other physico-chemical properties of biltong, with moisture content, salt, ash content, Aw and pH being 45.0%, 5.13%, 44.8%, 7.3%, 2.7%, 0.885 and 5.61 on average, respectively. Overall, the findings of the study show that freezing does have a significant effect on the final quality of biltong. However, it can be concluded that a significant effect on the physico-chemical properties of biltong depends on the changes of mass transfers during salting and drying.

- Description: The study investigated the effect of muscle type and freezing on evaluation of mass transfer during processing physico-chemical of South African biltong and its textural properties. In the first experimental phase of this study, mass transfers, physico-chemical and textural properties (hardness, cohesiveness, springiness, and chewiness) of commercially produced biltong from biceps femoris (BF) and semitendinosus (ST) (n=9) were measured. Biltong was dried at 30oC and 40% relative humidity until it had lost 50% of its initial weight. The initial moisture content, water activity (Aw) of BF muscles (74.3% and 0.992) were significantly lower compared those of ST muscles (75.4% and 0.994%). The fat content of BF (2.3%) muscles was higher (P<0.05) than in ST muscles (1.7%). The salt, weight and water gain for the BF muscle were 2.3%, -2.6% and -7.0% respectively and were significantly higher than those of ST muscles which were 2.1, -0.4 and -4.0, respectively. After drying, the moisture content, Aw, and pH were lower in BF (42.2, 0.886 and 5.29) than those of ST muscles (45.1, 0.911 and 5.42). The salt content was higher (P<0.05) in BF muscle than in ST. Among textural properties, hardness was significantly higher in biltong from the BF (233.0N), while the springiness was significantly lower compared to the ST muscle (178.2N). Therefore, it was concluded that the use of different muscles results in variation of biltong physicochemical characteristics. The second experiment investigated the effect of freezing and muscle type on mass transfers, lipid oxidation, physico-chemical and textural properties of biltong. In this experiment, the iii ST muscles were replaced with semimembranosus (SM) muscles. A total of 12 beef muscles were used, with six BF and six SM muscles frozen in a blast freezer at -40 oC till they reached -20oC; then they were transferred to -20oC for 14 days. The thawing loss for the BF and ST muscles was 1.3 and 2.4% respectively, but there were no significant (P>0.05) differences. The protein and salt content were significantly higher in frozen-thawed (24.3 and 0.13%) muscles than in fresh muscle (20.2 and 0.08%); whereas the fat content and pH were lower (P<0.05) in frozen-thawed (5.36) compared to fresh muscles (5.51). Between muscles, the moisture, salt content, and pH were higher in BF muscles than in SM muscles (73.2, 0.12% and 5.49). Aw was affected by the interaction between freezing and muscle type, with frozenthawed SM having lower Aw (0.990). During salting, salt, weight and water gain did not show any differences (P<0.05). There were no major significant differences after salting. There were lower TBARS and pH in frozen-thawed (1.5mgMDA/kg and 5.15) muscles than in fresh muscles (3.3mgMDA/kg and 5.19) as well as in SM muscles (1.8mgMDA/kg and 5.16) than in BF muscles (3.0mgMDA/kg and 5.19). The moisture was significantly lower in frozen-thawed SM (68.1%) than in fresh SM, BF and frozen-thawed BF (69.3,70.5 and 71.7%) after salting. On the final product, the interaction between muscle type and freezing affected the moisture content, TBARS, chewiness and the springiness of biltong, with the biltong from fresh SM (39.8%) having significantly lower moisture content compared frozenthawed BF and ST muscles as well fresh BF muscles (42.8% in average). The TBARS were higher in biltong from fresh BF muscles (5.1mgMDA/kg) compared to other muscles. Furthermore, the chewiness and springiness were higher (P<0.05) in biltong produced from SM frozen-thawed muscles (327.7N and 1.5). The WBSF was higher in biltong from the BF muscles (108.8N) than in the biltong from SM (80.1) but it was not affected by the freezing effect (P>0.05). Freezing did not show any major differences in biltong. iv The third experiment was conducted to determine the effect of freezing African buffalo carcasses on weight loss during salting, physico-chemical and textural properties of biltong. Five muscles (ST, SM, BF, LTL, and RF) were randomly selected from 30 carcasses (15 frozen-thawed and 15 fresh), cut along the grain, traditionally salted and dried at 26oC till they lost 45-50% of their initial weight. The salting weight loss was higher in frozen-thawed muscles (-1.45%) than in fresh muscles (-0.89%). The freezing treatment affected the physico-chemical properties of the biltong. The biltong produced from frozen-thawed muscles showed significantly higher protein and ash (47.6 and 7.6%) compared to fresh (43.9 and 7.1); whereas the moisture, fat, pH and Aw were lower (43.7, 2.1, 0.870 and 5.30, respectively) compared to those of biltong from fresh muscles (45.5%, 2.9%, 0.890 and 5.38). The moisture, pH and fat content were further affected by muscle type. The interactive effect was observed in salt content, with RF frozen-thawed showing higher salt content (8.2%) compared to all other muscles. The hardness and WBSF were significantly higher (P<0.05) in biltong frozen-thawed (204.1N and 135.0N) than in fresh muscles (146.2N and 113.1N). Moreover, the chewiness and springiness were affected (P<0.05) by muscle type, with RF muscle having higher springiness 0.89 and chewiness 171.1N than all the other muscles. Therefore, it can be concluded that freezing buffalo carcasses significantly influenced the quality characteristics of biltong. The fourth experiment studied the effect of drying methods on physico-chemical properties of traditional biltong produced from African buffalo muscles. The BF and SM muscles were randomly selected from 15 fresh carcasses, cut into strips, salted and divided into two batches per muscle. The first batch of each muscle type was dried in the ambient-air drier at 22oC average and the second batch in the cabinet drier at 26 oC till 45-50% weight loss. No differences (P>0.05) were observed in salting weight loss between the drying method and muscle type. The protein content was significantly higher in SM (46%) muscles compared to v BF (43%) but there was no effect (P>0.05) caused by the drying method. The interactions between the muscle type and drying method affected the fat content, with biltong from airdried BF muscles having significant lower (2.1%) fat content. There were no significant differences in other physico-chemical properties of biltong, with moisture content, salt, ash content, Aw and pH being 45.0%, 5.13%, 44.8%, 7.3%, 2.7%, 0.885 and 5.61 on average, respectively. Overall, the findings of the study show that freezing does have a significant effect on the final quality of biltong. However, it can be concluded that a significant effect on the physico-chemical properties of biltong depends on the changes of mass transfers during salting and drying.

- Description: Previous studies conducted in the study area recommended an irrigation scheme as a much desired intervention in order to reduce poverty levels, reduce unemployment, provide a livelihood for the households and trigger development. The Land Bank of South Africa has shown keen interest to provide funds to set up an irrigation scheme in Guquka. Absence of peoples’ involvement and farmer participation has been identified as one of the causes of poor performance of smallholder irrigation schemes in South Africa. The poor performance of smallholder irrigation projects in South Africa provided a good basis for exploring factors that could possibly affect farmer participation and the success of the proposed irrigation scheme. This knowledge would be useful to providers of extension services, capital providers, policy makers and the recipients of the proposed irrigation scheme. The main objective of this study was to investigate the factors affecting the willingness of farming households to participate in the proposed irrigation scheme. This investigation helped to analyse demographic; socio economic situation; farming practices; economic activities; water sources, uses and management in the study area. The major tool of enquiry in this study was the questionnaire which was used to collect data from the households. Household and farm characteristics were collected using structured questionnaires with the help of locally recruited and trained enumerators. The data used for the empirical analysis was obtained from a survey of 50 farming households in Guquka, in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The following variables were selected to determine the scope of their influence on farmer willingness to participate in the proposed scheme: age; membership in local group; investment in agriculture, educational level of the farmers, knowledge, household size, labour and gender. A logit model was used to determine the extent to which these selected characteristics influence the willingness of farmers to participate in the proposed irrigation scheme. The results showed that willingness to participate in the scheme was significantly influenced by the afore mentioned variables as well as knowledge about the planned irrigation scheme which is mainly provided by extension agents; and total household income. Age was found to decrease the willingness of farmers to participate in irrigation. A positive association existed between participation and the following variables; membership in local group, investment in agriculture, educational level of the farmers and knowledge. On the other hand, household size, labour and gender were not significant variables affecting willingness to participate in the proposed irrigation scheme. Based on the results from the logit regression model, it can be concluded that membership in a local group, investment in agriculture, education, knowledge and total household income are responsible for increasing the probability of participation. The negative relationship on age and participation indicates that the older the person is, the lesser the chances of participation. It is recommended that stakeholders should improve access to education and farmer training programmes. Support systems to disseminate information, training and knowledge should be enhanced. Improving institutional support and access to financial services should be prioritised by the stakeholders in the study area. Further studies on building institutional capacity and a cost benefit analysis of irrigation options in the study area are recommended.

The Internet of Things provides a network to achieve communication, and computation abilities to provide individuals with smart services anytime, and anywhere. Rapid developments in information technology have increased the number of smart appliances being used, leading to increased electricity usage. Devices and appliances in Smart Environments continue to consume electricity even when not in use, because of the standby function. The problems arise as the electricity consumption of the standby function accumulates to large amounts. Effective communication through visualisation of the electricity consumption in a Smart Environment provides a viable solution to reducing the consumption of electricity. This research aimed to design and developed a visualisation system that successfully communicates electricity consumption to the user using a variety of visualisation techniques. The Design Science Research Methodology was used to address the research questions and was used to iteratively design and develop an energy usage visualisation system. The visualisation system was created for the Smart Lab at the Nelson Mandela University's Department of Computing Sciences. A usability study was conducted to assess the usability and efficacy of the system. The system was found to be usable and effective in communicating power usage to potential customers, since the participants were able to complete the tasks in a short amount of time. Differential regulation of wheat (Triticum aestivum) callose synthases during Russian wheat aphid (diuraphis noxia)infestation

- Description: Plant production serves as the primary food source for all living beings and is continuously being affected by many biotic and abiotic factors. Wheat, one of the most consumed cereal crops in the world and the second most cultivated crop after maize in South Africa, is continuously being affected by Russian wheat aphid (RWA) since 1978. To counteract the effect of this aphid, the first resistant wheat cultivar was developed in 1984 in South Africa containing the Dn1 resistance gene. However, the mechanism of action of the resistance is still not fully understood to date. The feeding of the RWA on the wheat induces callose deposition especially in susceptible wheat cultivars, linking the β-1.3-polysaccharide (callose) to the resistance mechanism. Callose is synthesized by callose synthases, also known as glucan synthase-like genes (GSL). Not much is known about the mechanism of action of callose synthases or how they are regulated in response to the RWA. Bioinformatics tools, such as those available at NCBI, were used to identify the wheat callose synthases genes. The proteins encoded by the identified wheat callose synthases genes, were then analyzed for conserved domain motifs using the MEME suite and InterproScan, sequence similarities using ClustaL Omega and transmembrane domains using HMMTOP and ProtCamp. These were then compared with those of the already characterized Arabidopsis callose synthase proteins in an attempt to identify the wheat callose synthase(s) that responds to aphid feeding. Further bioinformatics studies were carried out to identify the presence of biotic stress associated cis-acting regulatory elements found in the 1.5 kbp upstream region of the start codon of the Arabidopsis callose synthase genes. Eight partial wheat callose synthase sequences were identified and two of these (TaGSL2 and TaGSL22) showed high similarities to the AtGSL5, which is up-regulated in response to aphid feeding in Arabidopsis. Six of the wheat callose synthase genes were mediated to code for the functional callose synthases proteins: TaGSL3, 8, 12, 19, 22 and 23, and analyzed for conserved protein motifs. Based on the sequence similarities and conserved protein domains, TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 were found to be the most similar to AtGSL5 and most likely to respond to RWA infestation. Cis-acting regulatory element analyses confirmed the possibility of TaGSL22 being responsible for callose deposition in wheat as biotic stress associated cis-acting regulatory elements, Box W1, TC- rich element and W- box were all found in the 1.5 kbp upstream of the TaGSL22 coding region. Callose was quantified in both susceptible and resistant wheat cultivars using the aniline blue fluorescence method. When infested with RWA-SA1, the susceptible wheat cultivar (Tugela) deposited significantly higher amounts of callose, compared to the resistant wheat cultivar (Tugela DN), which deposited little, to no callose with respect to the control samples. Transcription analysis, of the TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 in RWA-SA2 infested Tugela and Tugela DN wheat cultivars, was performed using real time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Both TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 genes were up-regulated in Tugela and Tugela DN wheat cultivars in response to RWA-SA2 infestation, with TaGSL22 being more expressed than TaGSL2 in both cultivars, indicating that RWA-SA2 is able to overcome the resistance of Tugela DN and cause callose deposition. However, significantly higher expression of both genes was still observed in the susceptible, Tugela wheat cultivar. This study therefore confirms that callose deposition is associated with RWA-SA1 feeding, only in the susceptible wheat cultivar, Tugela and not the resistant cultivar, Tugela DN. However, during RWA-SA2 feeding, two of the eight identified callose synthases in wheat, are up-regulated in response to RWA-SA2 feeding, in both the resistant and susceptible wheat cultivars with higher levels observed in the susceptible wheat cultivar when compared to the resistant wheat cultivar. TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 are therefore implicated in the callose deposition observed in the susceptible and resistant wheat cultivars, after RWA-SA2 infestation. Further studies are required to confirm the differential regulation of the two wheat callose synthases proteins during RWA infestation and their possible role in the resistance mechanism of the resistant wheat cultivar, Tugela DN.

Further bioinformatics studies were carried out to identify the presence of biotic stress associated cis-acting regulatory elements found in the 1.5 kbp upstream region of the start codon of the Arabidopsis callose synthase genes. Eight partial wheat callose synthase sequences were identified and two of these (TaGSL2 and TaGSL22) showed high similarities to the AtGSL5, which is up-regulated in response to aphid feeding in Arabidopsis. Six of the wheat callose synthase genes were mediated to code for the functional callose synthases proteins: TaGSL3, 8, 12, 19, 22 and 23, and analyzed for conserved protein motifs. Based on the sequence similarities and conserved protein domains, TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 were found to be the most similar to AtGSL5 and most likely to respond to RWA infestation. Cis-acting regulatory element analyses confirmed the possibility of TaGSL22 being responsible for callose deposition in wheat as biotic stress associated cis-acting regulatory elements, Box W1, TC- rich element and W- box were all found in the 1.5 kbp upstream of the TaGSL22 coding region. Callose was quantified in both susceptible and resistant wheat cultivars using the aniline blue fluorescence method. When infested with RWA-SA1, the susceptible wheat cultivar (Tugela) deposited significantly higher amounts of callose, compared to the resistant wheat cultivar (Tugela DN), which deposited little, to no callose with respect to the control samples. Transcription analysis, of the TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 in RWA-SA2 infested Tugela and Tugela DN wheat cultivars, was performed using real time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Both TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 genes were up-regulated in Tugela and Tugela DN wheat cultivars in response to RWA-SA2 infestation, with TaGSL22 being more expressed than TaGSL2 in both cultivars, indicating that RWA-SA2 is able to overcome the resistance of Tugela DN and cause callose deposition. However, significantly higher expression of both genes was still observed in the susceptible, Tugela wheat cultivar. This study therefore confirms that callose deposition is associated with RWA-SA1 feeding, only in the susceptible wheat cultivar, Tugela and not the resistant cultivar, Tugela DN. However, during RWA-SA2 feeding, two of the eight identified callose synthases in wheat, are up-regulated in response to RWA-SA2 feeding, in both the resistant and susceptible wheat cultivars with higher levels observed in the susceptible wheat cultivar when compared to the resistant wheat cultivar. TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 are therefore implicated in the callose deposition observed in the susceptible and resistant wheat cultivars, after RWA-SA2 infestation. Further studies are required to confirm the differential regulation of the two wheat callose synthases proteins during RWA infestation and their possible role in the resistance mechanism of the resistant wheat cultivar, Tugela DN.

- Description: In an attempt to overcome the high maintenance and costs associated with traditional physico-chemical methods, much work is being done on the application of enzymes for the recovery of valuable metals from solutions and industrial effluents. One of the most widely studied enzymatic metal recovery systems uses hydrogenase enzymes, particularly from sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB). While it is known that hydrogenases from SRB mediate the reductive precipitation of metals, the mechanism of enzymatic reduction, however, is not yet fully understood. The main aim of the present study was to investigate the role of a hydrogenase enzyme in the removal of rhodium from both aqueous solution and industrial effluent. A quantitative analysis of the rate of removal of rhodium(III) by a resting SRB consortium under different initial rhodium and biomass concentrations, pH, temperature, presence and absence of SRB cells and electron donor, was studied. Rhodium speciation was found to be the main factor controlling the rate of removal of rhodium from solution. SRB cells were found to have a higher affinity for anionic rhodium species, as compared to both cationic and neutral species, which become abundant when speciation equilibrium was reached. Consequently, a pH-dependant rate of rhodium removal from solution was observed. The maximum SRB uptake capacity for rhodium was found to be 66 mg rhodium per g of resting SRB biomass. Electron microscopy studies revealed a time-dependant localization and distribution of rhodium precipitates, initially intracellularly and then extracellularly, suggesting the involvement of an enzymatic reductive precipitation process. A hydrogenase enzyme capable of reducing rhodium(III) from solution was isolated and purified by PEG, DEAE-Sephacel anion exchanger and Sephadex G200 gel exclusion. A distinct protein band with a molecular weight of 62kDa was obtained when the hydrogenase containing fractions were subjected to a 10% SDS-PAGE. Characterization studies indicated that the purified hydrogenase had an optimum pH and temperature of 8 and 40°C, respectively. A maximum of 88% of the initial rhodium in solution was removed when the purified hydrogenase was incubated under hydrogen. Due to the low pH of the industrial effluent (1.31), the enzymatic reduction of rhodium by the purified hydrogenase was greatly retarded. It was apparent that industrial effluent pretreatment was necessary before the application an enzymatic treatment method. In the present study, however, it has been established that SRB are good candidates for the enzymatic recovery of rhodium from both solution and effluent.

The fact that organisations are using teams does not necessarily mean they are always effective, there are many factors that contribute to team effectiveness in an organisation, and these factors need to be identified and managed properly so that the team can remain effective and produce the results that are expected. Management of most companies is unaware of the factors that contribute to group and team effectiveness, and most teams are ineffective because of the lack of focus on the factors that improve group and team effectiveness. This is the reason or objective why this study was conducted at Transnet Engineering, to identify the factors that are critical to improving team effectiveness. The researcher conducted a literature review in order to determine the factors that improve group and team effectiveness. Some of the factors deal with organisational culture, motivation (monetary and non-monetary motivation), diversity in teams, size of teams, formulation of teams, team leadership, team goals, team structures, team member training, trust in teams, etc. An empirical study with the use of a questionnaire was also conducted to determine the perceptions that supervisors, superintendents, foremen and managers have at Transnet Engineering with regards to factors that improve group and team effectiveness. The research instrument was grouped into five categories; organisational context, individual context, team context, management support and team effectiveness. More than 50 percent of the respondents agreed with the organisational and individual context factors that were tested, around 75 percent of the respondents agreed with team context factors that were tested, almost 60 percent of respondents agreed with management support factors, and more than 60 percent of respondents indicated that their teams are effective. Although there is general agreement between most factors identified in the literature study and the empirical study, the following will need more focus: Offering of team resources Leadership support from executive committee members (EXCO) Proper reward and recognition systems Conducting research to identify employee satisfaction levels Team development Diversity management Talent management Team size
