- Description: The debate about the influence of financial market development on economic growth has been ongoing for more than a century. Since Schumpeter (1912) wrote about the happenings on Lombard Street, right up to the economists of today, there is growing interest into how financial market development affects economic activity and hence economic growth. With economic growth gaining prominence in respect of development discourse, inquiry into the finance-growth nexus has grown rapidly. The latest advances of the finance-growth nexus show a positive relationship between financial market development and economic growth. In this regard, little research has been done globally pertaining to most recent economic developments, especially concerning the BRICS economies. This research investigates the influence of financial market development on emerging economies, BRICS and non-BRICS and to determine whether the openness of financial markets in BRICS economies contributed to higher growth trajectories compared to their non-BRICS counterparts. The research utilises the Generalised Method of Moments and an extended endogenous growth model to estimate the influence of a set of financial market indicators. The study found that higher levels of credit to the private sector and financial depth in the BRICS economies contributed to the higher levels of economic growth experienced in the BRICS compared to non-BRICs emerging economies.

The study made use of the quantitative design, with the sample consisting of 270 respondents from the selected mine in South Africa. Probability sampling was used to select respondents from the whole population. Data was analysed using descriptive statistical analysis. To examine the association between variables, linear regression analysis was used. Confirmatory analysis was used to measure validity for work-family conflict (WFC). To measure the validity for personality; face validity, construct and content validity were used. Reliability was measured using the Cronbach alpha. The results of the study showed a significant negative relationship between the personality traits and WFC except for the agreeableness trait. The results also showed significant negative correlations with the different forms of WFC, except for the agreeableness trait. The findings of this study are helpful to the mining industry as they assist in the implementation of procedures and policies that will help to reduce WFC and its consequences in the work environment.

The aim of this study was to investigate the factors that contribute to the implementation of HRP and D in the Tanzanian health sector. To achieve this, 22 respondents from the Ministry Secretariat and Directors were interviewed, and 355 questionnaires were administered to beneficiaries of the HRP and D. A mixed method approach was utilised to analyse the data collected from the respondents. The findings of the study pointed that males dominated the sample, with the majority holding postgraduate qualification. In terms of the implementation of the HRP, 49 percent of the respondents stated that it was satisfactory. While, in terms of capacity, 67 percent were of the view that there is a shortage of skilled staff. The challenges identified include inequality in the allocation of staff, lack of skills, knowledge and experience, and oversupply of staff in certain regions. Strategies proposed for enhancing the application of HRP and D include an overhaul in the organisation structure, solving staff welfare issues, ethics and values improvement, and management of staff. The study recommends that the government should allocate adequate budget to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to implement Human Resource Planning and Human Resource Development in all levels of the sector as directed by President’s Office, and the Public Service Management (PO-PSM). The study also recommends on the improvement of the Human Capital Management Information System (HCMIS) to assess health workers movement. Lastly, the study recommends that there should be good coordination, cooperation, and clear lines of authority between stakeholders of health system in supervision and regulation in the implementation of HRP and HRD plans.

It also highlighted the importance of employee engagement with regards to the improvement of organisational performance especially in a lean manufacturing environment during the change. Design/methodology/approach – The most frequently mentioned drivers of employee engagement in relation to change and a lean environment were identified through a literature study. The potential drivers that emerged were vision, leadership, communication, immediate supervisory behaviour, team collaboration and training/career development. An empirical study was then carried out to study the impact of these factors on affective commitment, volunteerism and sportsmanship, the latter two are components of organisational citizenship behaviour. A survey with a questionnaire was conducted amongst 86 employees in a lean manufacturing organisation, which was undergoing change. The data analyses included descriptive statistics, correlations and multiple regression analysis. Findings – It was observed that all the six identified drivers of employee engagement namely: Vision, Leadership, Communication, Immediate Supervisor Behaviour, Team Collaboration and Training and Career Development explained 61.2 per cent of the variance in the employee engagement. However, the variables that had the biggest impact on employee engagement were the articulation of the organisational change Vision, Team Collaboration and Immediate Supervisor Behaviour. Practical implications – The results of the study emphasise that special focus and effort must be placed on factors affecting Vision, Team Collaboration and Immediate Supervisor Behaviour as they have shown significantly higher influence on employee engagement in a lean manufacturing environment during a period of change.

Furthermore, information on farmer perceptions pertaining to these practices was also gathered. A questionnaire survey was conducted to determine materials used by resource-limited farmers to enhance fertility and treat reproductive ailments. The survey revealed 10 plant species that were commonly used for reproductive health in goats. Elephantorrhizza elephantina (37.1%) and Rhoicissus tomentosa (25.7%) were the most frequently cited plant species. Elephantorrhiza elephantina and R. tomentosa recorded the highest Fidelity Level (FL) values of 92.86% and 75% respectively, for their use in the treatment of reproductive ailments and these were the plants on which further studies were conducted. The study also revealed that farmers had different perceptions on the effectiveness of the traditional medicines. An in-vivo assessment was done to determine efficacy of E. elephantina and R. tomentosa using serum estradiol and progesterone profiles. The highest (P<0.05) serum estradiol and progesterone concentration was observed in animals administered with aqueous extracts of E. elephantina and R. tomentosa mixture while the least (P<0.05) concentrations were observed in the negative control group. Does administered with a mixture of aqueous E. elephantina and R. tomentosa extract had the highest (P<0.05) body weight (65 kg) as well as body condition scores, while the negative control which were administered with distilled water had the least body weights (54 kg) and body condition scores. Does that were administered with a mixture of E.elephantina and R. tomentosa were all pregnant with twins (100%), confirmed by a doppler ultrasound scan.

It is this inevitability of disputes that warrantsmeasures to be in place so as to effectively and without delay, resolve them in order to realise industrial peace. This study is prompted by the way industrial disputes have been handled in the past and the contemporary era. South African legal system provides Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms to the use of adjudication by the ordinary courts in resolving workplace disputes. However, a set of methods made up of conciliation, mediation and arbitration have not been effective in resolving labour disputes owing to a variety of factors. Failure to provide a speedy resolution of disputes, large number of referrals to the Commissioner for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and a large number of review applications lodged at the Labour Courts are some of the contributory factors that delay matters in bringing to finality. It is therefore the aim of this study, to proffer plausible recommendations that intends to cure and provide a silver bullet to the lacuna which exists in the current labour dispute system. To achieve the above stipulated aim, a general background of the study, accompanied by the chronicles of dispute resolution statutes and mechanisms is deliberated. Thereafter, South African compliance with International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conventions is discussed to assess the efficacy of labour dispute mechanisms. A critical analyses of the effectiveness of ADR within the scope of Labour Relations Act (LRA) 66 of 1995 will then follow. Although there are some limitations to this study, it should be noted that relevant legislation passed by parliament, cases, together with international and regional conventions ratified by the government, scholarly articles, journals and books are used to strengthen arguments and provide guidance in achieving the aims and objectives of the study.

- Description: Introduction: Hamstring injury prevalence in soccer remains a major concern. Research in this context has focused on Caucasian populations with little attention given to other ethnic groups. The compatibility and applicability of such research to the South African context, particularly at an amateur level, may be minimal due to fundamental differences in physical characteristics, as well as complexities with regards to implementation. The aim of this investigation was therefore twofold. 1) Identify the lower extremity strength and performance profile of Peri-urban Amateur South African Players, and 2) Assess the efficacy of a community based intervention through the use of the Nordic Hamstring Exercise. Methods: 19 Black male Eastern Cape amateur players participated in a 12 week randomly controlled trial (9 = Control, 10 = Intervention). All participants completed regular training, while the intervention group, in addition, performed the Nordic Hamstring exercise post warm up. The incremental program design was taken from Mjolsnes et al. (2004), with a progressive increase in both sets and repetitions. Compliance was defined as completion of the required exercises for that session. Isokinetic strength evaluations (at 60°.s-1 and 180°.s-1) including assessment of peak torque and total work, as well as performance measures of countermovement and squat jump, were completed pre and post intervention, with the profile of the Peri-urban player the combined responses of both groups at baseline. Additionally, both the functional ratio (Eccentric Hamstrings/Concentric Quadriceps) and eccentric utilization ratio (Countermovement Jump/Squat Jump) were calculated. Results: Concentric quadriceps peak torque at baseline reported values of 195 (±22) Nm and 141 (±21) Nm at 60°.s-1 and 180°.s-1. Values of 162 (±21) Nm were observed for peak torque of the eccentric hamstrings at 60°.s-1, while 157 (±18) Nm was indicated at 180°.s-1. Mean functional ratio responses were observed as 0.83 (±0.11) and 1.12 (±0.16) for 60°.s-1 and 180°.s-1 respectively. Additionally, the eccentric utilization ratio responses were recorded as 1.04 (±0.08). Regarding the intervention, concentric quadriceps total work of the dominant limb significantly improved over the time course of experimentation within the intervention group. Other quadriceps variables, concentric hamstrings, squat jump capability and performance measures all reported no significant changes (p>0.05) over the course of assessment when compared to the control. Eccentric hamstrings peak torque observed significant improvements (p<0.05) of between 5.72 and 12.82 % within the intervention group, while the countermovement jump indicated a significant 15.59 % increase (p<0.05). Additionally, the functional ratio and the eccentric utilization ratio both indicated no significant changes (p>0.05), with a 2.48-7.66 % and 5.33 % improvement noted following completion of assessment. Conclusion: Isokinetic responses at baseline observed decreased quadriceps strength, and increased hamstring strength when compared to both amateur and professional populations examined in previous studies, for both isokinetic testing speeds. Additionally, performance measures indicated similar responses to other amateur populations. Regarding the intervention, significant improvements in eccentric hamstring peak torque and countermovement jump indicate the partial success of the present intervention. Additionally, while the functional ratio and eccentric utilization ratio reported no significant changes, improvements were noted within the intervention group while the control noted no change. The Nordic hamstring lower therefore resulted in strength improvements within the eccentric hamstrings, reported as a significant factor for injury risk, however, such changes were not sufficient to significantly impact the functional ratio. It can be concluded that community based programs within South Africa have the potential to be effective; however, there are many barriers to implementation, including, language, ethnic and cultural differences, while a lack of resources and infrastructure play a significant role in a lack of development. More research of this nature is required to provide scientific support for structures and guidelines for the peri-urban community based South African player, to ensure the efficacy of internationally successful interventions such as the Nordic exercise.

A phylogenetic study was carried out and the topologies of the trees showed that genes were not transferred horizontally. It did, however, lead to the hypothesis that different NRPS genes are under different adaptive evolutionary pressures. Only slight conformational changes between L and D-conformation of amino acids were seen between the test and neighboring strains. All of the linker and terminal regions of synthetases were found to exhibit a large amount of conservation overall. Homology modeling was performed on the test strain on selected modules, TE and A-domains of fengycin and mycosubtilin synthetases. TE-domains between the different synthetases are different and specific for the NRP they facilitate release for. The NRPS from which the A-domain originates also influences substrate specificity as well as the module in which the A-domain occurs within the NRPS. Binding pockets of A-domains of differing substrate specificity were compared. The medium containing both glucose and peptone at 10 g/L resulted in the highest Growth Related Productivity (the product of specific yield and μ) of laccase (1.46 Units of laccase activity)/gram biomass/day and was used in all further experiments. The use of the guaiacol as an inducer further increased laccase activity 780% without inhibiting growth; similarly the phenolic effluent studied boosted activity almost 5 times. The timing of the addition of the phenolic effluent was found to have important consequences in its removal and at least 8 days of prior growth was required. Under these conditions, 0.125 g phenol/g biomass and 0.231 g o-cresol/g biomass were removed from solution per day.

In fact, human resources can be considered part of factor conditions which can positively impact on a firm’s competitive context. This impact can ultimately translate into improved financial results (Porter and Kramer, 2002). There is therefore a growing interest in ways to attract and retain talent. According to the managers of many big companies, well communicated corporate responsibility practices can improve staff attraction as well as retention rates by improving morale (CSRwire, 2002). To explore this, a small, creative company in Johannesburg which engages in charity work was selected as a case study, with the goal being to understand whether their culture of good deeds has a positive impact on staff wellbeing. While the owner of the company actively attempts to make the company an enjoyable place to work at, he appears to have initiated the philanthropic activities in a true spirit of giving, rather than with the motive of engaging staff in order to make more money. Nevertheless, the researcher’s investigative stance is that of an enlightened egoist, and the study focuses on the business case of giving being beneficial to the giver (ultimately the company) in the long term, as well as to the recipient. While the danger of suggesting that philanthropy could be instrumentalised is acknowledged (Morton, 2004), the investigation explores the possibility because such evidence could persuade other companies to become more socially concerned. Through a qualitative approach involving interviews, observation and analysis of video footage, it becomes apparent that there is clearly value for the staff in the charity work they do. Unfortunately the multiple initiatives undertaken to keep staff morale high at the company make it impossible to establish a clear link between the philanthropy and overall wellbeing, but as the study was conducted in the phenomenological paradigm the main concern was with understanding the experience of participants. However, an unexpected finding was that the employees derive great satisfaction from using their professional skills for charity work rather than just donating money to the charity. They feel that their skills uniquely position them to make significant changes to the lives of others, which gives them a sense of pride and achievement that they don’t necessarily experience in their ordinary activities at work. Their destination was St Aidan's College (1875-1973) in Grahamstown which they would staff. Two of the priests went to Graaff-Reinet where the Society established a mission house and noviciate (1875-1889). On 1 July 1878 the Zambesi Mission was founded with Henry Depelchin as its appointed leader. The Mission was placed under the direct control of the Jesuit General. St Aidan's became the headquarters of the Zambesi Mission and it was hoped that trainees for the Mission would emerge from the College. The first group of missionaries bound for the Zambesi regions left Grahamstown in 1879. Negotiations followed with the Ndebele chiefdom in Bulawayo and stations were established at Tati, Empandeni and Pandamatenga. Unsuccessful probes into Barotseland and Gazaland followed and a decade later the mission to Zambesia was abandoned and the Jesuits returned to the south where there had been further expansion of the Order's activities. Dunbrody (1882-1934), situated on the Sundays River, had been set up as a base for the Zambesi Mission, as an educational centre for Blacks and as a farm. Keilands (1886-1908) was an attempt to establish a missionary base for the extension of activities into the Transkei. Vleischfontein (1884-1894) in the Western Transvaal, was developed as a staging post between Zambesia and the Cape. In 1924 the Order attempted to develop parish work in Claremont, but initially nowhere else. By 1890 the Jesuits were ready to return to Matabeleland and in the post colonial years a string of stations were founded. Partly to conserve its manpower for the Zambesi enterprise and for financial and economic reasons, Graaff-Reinet was abandoned in 1889, followed by Vleischfontein, Keilands, the parish at Claremont, and Dunbrody. By 1934, the terminal point of the thesis, the only Jesuit presence in South Africa was at St Aidan's which was saved from closure by Papal intervention.

Uptake of HIV testing is influenced by a multitude of factors including the patient’s knowledge and beliefs about HIV. Methods: This study sought to quantify the impact of knowledge and attitudes on HIV testing acceptance in an emergency department by co-administering a validated HIV knowledge and attitudes survey to patients who were subsequently offered HIV testing. During the study period 223 patients were interviewed and offered HIV testing. Individuals reporting more negative overall attitudes (p = 0.006), higher levels of stigma to HIV testing, and individuals who believed their test was confidential were more likely to accept an HIV test. Interventions focused on improving patient perceptions around testing confidentiality will likely have the greatest impact on testing acceptance in the emergency department.

The growth of flue-cured tobacco in acid soils

- Description: The main effects of lime, aluminium, iron and manganese were studied in field and greenhouse grown tobacco; relations between soil and plant measurements were examined. Ground limestone, ground mixed lime, ground dolomite and slaked lime at rates equivalent to 1,000 and 2,000 lb. CaC0₃/acre increased yield and quality of flue-cured tobacco both on Triassic and granite sands, whether applied early (February/March) or late (September); the highest rate and late application were often best. Yields increased with 4,000 and 6,000 lb. dolomite/acre applied late, but quality decreased when the pH was about 6.0. Lime did not affect leaf maturity as reflected by nitrogen and reducing sugars concentration . Where leaf discolouration (slate) occurred, the best quality and least discoloured leaf had the lowest manganese concentration and was grown on limed soil. On a very acid and probably nitrogen deficient soil, lime, borax and nitrogen (nitrate only tested) reduced the discolouration and improved the quality, but potassium sulphate increased discolouration and decreased quality. Calcium concentration in the leaf was increased by lime, particularly calcitic materials, and magnesium concentration was increased by dolomite. Lime also increased the filling value and petroleum ether extract, but decreased manganese, boron, chloride and sometimes potassium, and had no effect on phosphorus, nitrogen, aluminium, iron, crude fibre, nicotine, reducing sugars and equilibrium moisture. The inorganic composition of greenhouse plants was similar; generally gypsum increased calcium concentration more than calcium carbonate but it did not affect manganese concentration, which was decreased by calcium carbonate. In the stem and roots of field grown plants (dolomite only tested), the concentration of magnesium was increased but the concentrations of calcium, potassium, aluminium and iron were unaffected. Although the concentration of nitrogen was increased and that of phosphorus was decreased in the stem, these were unaffected in the roots. Aluminium and iron behaved differently to other nutrient ions, being more concentrated in the roots than aerial plant parts. Boron and magnesium deficiencies were observed in a dry and wet year, respectively, suggesting that variable mineral deficiencies can affect responses to lime. Initially soil pH was affected more by source of lime, but later mostly by rates. Slaked lime increased the soil pH more than did ground limestone, mixed lime or dolomite. In a glasshouse experiment, pH was more important than calcium supply and in the field, the largest yields were often associated with the highest pH. Although aluminium and iron generally increased the concentration of phosphorus in the roots, they did not interfere with phosphorus transport in the plant. Manganese caused the leaf to become chlorotic and when no iron was present the upper leaves became yellow, and developed brown and white lesions. However, in soil grown plants, sufficient iron was present in the soil solution to prevent break down of tissue. Yellowing of the upper leaves also occurred when plants were grown in nutrient solution with aluminium and no iron; when both were present, the plants were darker in colour. Although aluminium damaged roots in nutrient solution, high rates of iron severely damaged leaves of plants grown in soil. Since the concentrations of aluminium, iron and manganese were decreased in the soil solution by liming, they were compared with plant growth and composition in 17 different soils, with and without lime. As was expected, lime increased soil pH. It also increased exchangeable calcium, but decreased exchangeable aluminium, iron and manganese; exchangeable magnesium and potassium and resin extractable phosphorus were not affected. As the Ratio Law does not hold for all Rhodesian soils, anion adsorption will be avoided if the soils are equilibrated with O.OOOSM CaC1₂; the concentrations of the cations in solution were affected in the same way as exchangeable cations, but phosphorus was increased. There was no relationship between yield of tobacco and its chemical composition. The correlations between soil solution data and plant composition were poor, except for manganese and phosphorus; the relation between Mn ppm. in plant vsa (superscript)Mn/a (superscript)Ca + Mg (enclosed in square root sign √) in solution, and P% vs pH₂ P0₄ or pH₂ P0₄ +½ pCa, were both curvilinear. On the other hand, all measurements of exchangeable cations were poorly correlated with plant composition. Finally yield was poorly correlated with soil solution data, and pH was as satisfactory as any other measurement tested. Manganese toxicity was observed on three soils, and a probable manganese deficiency on one. It was not possible to define a limit above which manganese toxicity occurred, but manganese deficiency developed at about 63 ppm. manganese. Variations in pH and the availability of aluminium, iron and manganese occurred when soils were incubated at about field capacity, generally the main effects having developed within seven days. In all soils, there was an initial increase in soil pH and a maximum value was reached in one to four days, decreasing by variable amounts with longer periods of incubation. Although the concentration of aluminium was larger than that of iron, the relation between both ions and soil pH was curvilinear, their concentrations increasing with decreasing pH. Increased temperature of incubation increased pH with a resultant decrease in the concentration of aluminium, but in one soil it appreciably increased the availability of iron in the early periods of incubation. Autumn and spring ploughing did not affect subsequent pH or the concentration of aluminium and iron in the soil solution. Manganese concentration varied from soil to soil and was not related to soil pH. In most soils there was a decrease in manganese concentration with length of incubation and it decreased more rapidly the lower the initial concentration. Temperature effects were variable and moisture affected the behaviour of manganese more than temperature. These findings and the distribution of aluminium, iron and manganese in the plant helped to explain the poor correlations.

- Description: The ultimate objective of this research is the elucidation of the mechanism of the resorcinol-formaldehyde condensation. Whilst a vast literature has been built up about the phenol- formaldehyde condensation, that of resorcinol has received but scant attention, probably because the high reactivity of resorcinol rendered the following of the condensation extremely difficult. The earliest observation concerning the resorcinol-formaldehyde condensation was due to Baeyer who, in 1872, condensed resorcinol with various aldehydes. When the aldehyde was relatively inactive crystalline compounds were obtalned but with acetaldehyde or formaldehyde a resinous product resulted. In 1892 Caro condensed an excess ot resorcinol with formaldehyde in the presence of dilute hydrochloric acid; the product obtained recrystallised from alcohol as white microsoopic crystals, decomposed without melting at 250° and was stated to be bis (2- 4 dihydroxyphenyl) methane ... In decidlng upon the most suitable lines of attack it would seem that a survey of the literature relating to the phenol-formaldehyde concentration which might be expected to be closely related to that of resorcinol, would be of value.
