  • Description: This is the first Chopi Ngodo ever recorded and published. It is described in my book "Chopi Muscians" Oxford University Press. The recordings were taken on glass based acetate discs in November 1943 and copied onto tape in October 1963. With the exception of a few verses omitted from one or two of the lyrics this version, performed away from home in the broadcasting studios of SABC Durban, Natal, is the same as a village performance but without the dancers. The players themselves sang all the words which are normally sung by the dancers. As there were no dance routines to be completed during the performance, each item is rather shorter than it would have been in the home village. With these minor exceptions the Ngodo is the complete work; all of it the composition of its leader Katini, a leading figure in Chopi music for 40 years. He died in 1948 about 60 years old. He was very disobedient and insisted upon finding and eating bones. Now when she was fully grown, she was about to marry a chief's son. On the day she was going to marry there was a big party. People were warned not to throw the bones on the floor because people might walk on them. But in fact the chief was afraid his daughter would pick them up and revert into being a dog. But the people did not pay attention. Then the girl began to pick up the bones and they all called out "child of a dog, child of a dog". So you see, there is nothing you can hide in the long run. Story.

It used to be an old regimental custom but is now done when a piece of work is finished as an indication they are now dispersing. "Sukumuphendule we mntaka mahlokohla kudumi nganeno kuking u sebuza abephumanga phesheya. Uligabazi lenjobo kabephumesi godlwe ni vuma kushwi nkhuyanje nkondho tindhwuna taka gwa ne tiphacumu tsethoo." "Stand up and reply (Sebuza) you, son of Mahlokohla. Cannons are firing for King Sebuza, when coming from overseas. You (Sebuza) know how to dance when you come from the palace. We say, Agree! The indunas of Swaziland disagree with these laws." This chant refers to Subuza's visit to England for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and was composed to greet him on his return. Ukuhlehla walking and running song.

  • Description: The player has taken a Nyasa instrument instead of the local Njari. He explained he found the smaller instrument easier to play inspite of the fact that it had only half the number of notes. He claimed he had tuned it the same as the Njari but in point of fact his scale was one note short appearing to be hexatonic whereas his tribe is known to be heptatonic. The missing note is clearly situated between 212 and 260 vs and might have been approximately 234 to 238 vibrations per second. Humorous song with Mbira.
