- Description: Global climate changes have been associated with ocean warming and sea-level rise. Armouring of coastlines has become common practice with the increasing threat of coastal erosion. The transformation of soft sediment habitats to hard, artificial habitats because of coastline armouring can lead to changes in species diversity, composition and distribution. It is, therefore, essential to assess changes to habitats from coastal development as well as the ecological impact erosion control structures have within coastal systems. Ecological engineering attempts to combine engineering principals and ecological processes to reduce environmental impacts from coastal development and the implementation of artificial structures. Estuaries are particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts through development, and are extremely important systems offering nursery and foraging grounds for many species. These systems are, however, particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts from urbanisation and development. Within South Africa many estuaries are being transformed by the addition of artificial structures to combat erosion, one such structure is the Reno mattress (a flattened wire box filled with rocks). This study compared the fish diversity and abundances of existing Reno mattress structures and natural eelgrass (Zostera capensis) habitat in the Keurbooms Estuary, South Africa. Benthic invertebrates were sampled using standard core sampling and an adapted suction sampling approach within the two habitats. The non-destructive method of mini Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems (BRUVs) was used to sample fish. Seasonal benthic invertebrate and fish abundances and assemblages were assessed from winter 2018 to spring 2019 with greater abundances of both recorded in summer. Significantly greater abundances, diversity, and richness of fish were found in the Reno mattress habitat compared to Z. capensis. Invertebrate taxa displayed some overlap between habitats, however, three higher taxonomic groups were only recorded within Reno mattress habitat and one only within the eelgrass habitat. Fish assemblages differed significantly between the two established habitats. A Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) investigation was used to assess the ecological impact of newly installed Reno mattresses in the Keurbooms Estuary. Zostera capensis extent was sampled by determining the percentage cover of 0.5 m X 0.5 m quadrats and measurements of eelgrass blades. Percentage cover and blade length decreased during the installation of Reno mattress, but then recovered shortly after completion of the installation. Abundances, richness and diversity of invertebrates and fish were found to be similar before and after the installation which suggests that the installation had no net negative impact on the site. The Reno mattresses were found to attract fauna typical of rocky shore environments as well as a few invasive alien invertebrate species. This study noted that a hybrid habitat of Reno mattress and eelgrass was created and may in fact provide the positives of both to a system. In any coastal development it will be important to balance the demands of a growing population and the protection of natural habitats. The results of this study suggest that complex artificial structures such as Reno mattresses do provide habitat for fish and invertebrates. However, the use of these structures should be in combination with natural vegetation (e.g. as a hybrid habitat) and not one that replaces intertidal and subtidal natural habitat especially eelgrass. There is limited information regarding the ecological impacts of using Reno mattresses in estuaries and this study provides new information on their ecological efficacy that should be valuable for future coastal erosion control practices.

- Description: The aim of this study has been to examine, in the light of recent events in the field of Health Care in South Africa, the remarks and claims made by the World Health Organization, and the American Psychiatric Association between 1976 and 1978 on Health Care services, as provided for Blacks, by the South African government. In two reports, these organizations instituted the earliest, and arguably most significant claims against South Africa's system of Health Care. This study sketches firstly the political genesis and social context of the WHO, and APA examinations. Secondly, this study evaluates responses made by the South African State to the critical climate inspired by the above mentioned reports, through a close analysis of recent events associated with the politics, and provision of Health Care Facilities - particularly with regard to Black South Africans. This analysis suggests that the governments' earlier tentative policy of privatisation (which was soundly condemned by WHO and the APA) has been even more enthusiastically pursued - in contradiction to it's avowed policies of Commu ity Health Care, and to the continuing detriment of those South African communities who are in most need of adequate Health Care services. The study concludes that the criticisms raised by the WHO and APA had the effect of inspiring positive reforms in South Africa's health services, but in no way thwarted the governments', at first only tentative plans, to increasingly privatise it's psychiatric and other medical institutions.

- Description: Background - Microbial water quality monitoring is essential to the provision of potable water for domestic use. Unsafe water sources increase the risk of waterborne diseases. There is a need to raise awareness of legislature that supports management of water related disasters. Gender, education, health, and economic vulnerability contribute to the success of disaster management. Aim - This study aimed to investigate the microbial water quality of treated water in the Harare area. The study also researched the microbial water quality monitoring practices in Zimbabwe and how these contribute to the management of water borne diseases. The impact of gender, marriage, education, and disease in disaster management practices in Zimbabwe and South Africa was analysed. Method - Literature review was conducted on microbial water quality monitoring practices in Zimbabwe and legislature that supports disaster management. Practices of disaster management in Zimbabwe, and South Africa were investigated and compared. The perspective of the Harare community on the quality of their potable water was investigated through the use of a questionnaire and water quality testing was conducted using hydrogen sulphide test and R2A based heterotrophic plate count. Raw water supplying Manyame River and tap water in Harare households were assessed for microbial quality. Results and Discussion - Raw water sources were found to be contaminated by faecal matter. Household water sources had no faecal contamination, but tested positive for heterotrophic bacteria. The CFU/ml quantities obtained ranged from 1- 452 CFU/ml for all samples. The WHO guidelines for domestic water sources recommend that domestic water should have no coliforms/100 ml sample. Disaster management protocols were available in disaster prone areas such as the Matabeleland South Province. No guidelines were in place for monitoring microbial water quality as a disaster prevention method. Conclusion - The current state of treated water supplied by the Morton Jaffray Treatment Plant was found to be suitable for domestic use, but not sufficient to meet the Harare population’s needs. The need to push for legislature supporting microbial water quality monitoring was recognised. Initiating public / private partnerships in water distribution and water quality monitoring in Zimbabwe was encouraged.

- Description: J.R.R Tolkien wrote, in his Mythopoeia, that “He sees no stars who does not see them first, of living silver made that sudden burst, to flame like flowers beneath the ancient song”. In his defense of myth-making, he formulates the argument that the attribution of meaning is an act of creation - that “trees are not ‘trees’ until so named and seen” - and that this capacity for creation defines the human creature. The scientific endeavour, in this context, can be understood as a social expression of a fundamental feature of humanity, and from this endeavour flows much understanding. This thesis, one thread among many, focuses on the study of astronomical objects as seen by the radio waves they emit. What are radio waves? Electromagnetic waves were theorised by James Clerk Maxwell (Maxwell 1864) in his great theoretical contribution to modern physics, their speed matching the speed of light as measured by Ole Christensen R0mer and, later, James Bradley. It was not until Heinrich Rudolf Hertz’s 1887 experiment that these waves were measured in a laboratory, leading to the dawn of radio communications - and, later, radio astronomy. The link between radio waves and light was one of association: light is known to behave as a wave (Young double-slit experiment), with the same propagation speed as electromagnetic radiation. Light “proper” is also known to exist beyond the optical regime: Herschel’s experiment shows that when diffracted through a prism, sunlight warms even those parts of a desk which are not observed to be lit (first evidence of infrared light). The link between optical light and unseen electromagnetic radiation is then an easy step to make, and one confirmed through countless technological applications (e.g. optical fiber to name but one). And as soon as this link is established, a question immediately comes to the mind of the astronomer: what does the sky, our Universe, look like to the radio “eye”? Radio astronomy has a short but storied history: from Karl Jansky’s serendipitous observation of the centre of the Milky Way, which outshines our Sun in the radio regime, in 1933, to Grote Reber’s hand-built back-yard radio antenna in 1937, which successfully detected radio emission from the Milky Way itself, to such monumental projects as the Square Kilometer Array and its multiple pathfinders, it has led to countless discoveries and the opening of a truly new window on the Universe. The work presented in this thesis is a contribution to this discipline - the culmination of three years of study, which is a rather short time to get a firm grasp of radio interferometry both in theory and in practice. The need for robust, automated methods - which are improving daily, thanks to the tireless labour of the scientists in the field - is becoming ever stronger as the SKA approaches, looming large on the horizon; but even today, in the precursor era of LOFAR, MeerKAT and other pathfinders, it is keenly felt. When I started my doctorate, the sheer scale of the task at hand felt overwhelming - to actually be able to contribute to its resolution seemed daunting indeed! Thankfully, as the saying goes, no society sets for itself material goals which it cannot achieve. This thesis took place at an exciting time for radio interferometry: at the start of my doctorate, the LOFAR international stations were - to my knowledge - only beginning to be used, and even then, only tentatively; MeerKAT had not yet shown its first light; the techniques used throughout my work were still being developed. At the time of writing, great strides have been made. One of the greatest technical challenges of LOFAR - imaging using the international stations - is starting to become reality. This technical challenge is the key problem that this thesis set out to address. While we only achieved partial success so far, it is a testament to the difficulty of the task that it is not yet truly resolved. One of the major results of this thesis is a model of a bright resolved source near a famous extragalactic field: properly modeling this source not only allows the use of international LOFAR stations, but also grants deeper access to the extragalactic field itself, which is otherwise polluted by the 3C source’s sidelobes. This result was only achieved thanks to the other major result of this thesis: the development of a theoretical framework with which to better understand the effect of calibration errors on images made from interferometric data, and an algorithm to strongly mitigate them. The structure of this manuscript is as follows: we begin with an introduction to radio interferometry, LOFAR, and the emission mechanisms which dominate for our field of interest. These introductions are primarily intended to give a brief overview of the technical aspects of the data reduced in this thesis. We follow with an overview of the Measurement Equation formalism, which underpins our theoretical work. This is the keystone of this thesis. We then show the theoretical work that was developed as part of the research work done during the doctorate - which was published in Astronomy & Astrophysics. Its practical application - a quality-based weighting scheme - is used throughout our data reduction. This data reduction is the next topic of this thesis: we contextualise the scientific interest of the data we reduce, and explain both the methods and the results we achieve.
