- Description: The Granitberg foyaite complex is one of three known alkaline igneous complexes, which, together with a dyke swarm, constitute the Liüderitz Alkaline Province of Lower Cretaceous age. The near-circular complex is emplaced into dolomites and sandstones of the Bogenfels Formation. A large fragment of these sedimentary rocks, originally forming the roof of the intrusion, is preserved in the centre of the complex.

- Description: Reactions between the Outer Foyaite magma of the Granitberg Complex and the sedimentary country rocks are striking. At sandstone contacts the magma has assimilated quartz-rich sedimentary material and a suite of pulaskites, peralkaline nordmarkites, and peralkaline granites have been generated by a complex process involving both assimilation and crystal fractionation.

Distribution of Ca in highly fractionated peralkaline magmas

- Description: Many peralkaline rhyolites and granites contain less than 0.15 wt.% CaO. In contrast, strongly fractionated peralkaline nepheline syenites and phonolites usually contain greater than 0.5 wt.% CaO. Consideration of known distributions of Ca between crystals and liquid in conjunction with crystal fractionation does not provide an adequate explanation of the contrasting levels of Ca depletion observed. Examination of the suites of late-crystallizing accessory phases in peralkaline rocks suggests that Ca is more soluble in undersaturated magmas than in over-saturated magmas. Activities for CaO in silicic and phonolitic rocks are calculated and the latter have higher CaO activities than the former and this may manifest itself in the different suites of accessory phases and levels of Ca depletion noted in natural rocks.

- Description: The Pomona ring complex consists of several intrusive masses of syenitic magma that define a differentiation trend towards silica oversaturation. Volume relations, sequence of intrusion, and broad chemical characteristics are consistent with the syenites being derived by feldspar fractionation from an immediate syenitic parent. A plug of nepheline syenite and tinguaite dykes indicate the availability of silica-undersaturated magma generally in the Luderitz Province.

- Description: Geochemical analysis of soil samples taken from the area underlain by the Regenstein alkaline diatreme indicated potential areas for Pb-Zn-Ag mineralization, and these were subsequently proved by drilling. The pipelike body, emplaced into quartzites of the Damara Supergroup, consists of lithic and volcanic breccias. The breccias have been intruded, first by phonolite dykes, and then by numerous bodies of alkaline mafic and ultramafic rocks.

- Description: Volcanic rocks are found associated with several of the late Mesozoic basins of southern South Africa. Bentonites are known from Plettenberg Bay and, according to an unconfirmed report, they are also found in the Worcester Basin, while vitric tuffs have been recorded from east of Oudtshoorn. The most extensive occurrences, however, are those of the Suurberg Group, which crops out sporadically around the margins of the Algoa Basin.

- Description: In a number of mafic layered intrusions, layers with platinum group element (PGE) mineralization coincide with breaks in cumulus mineral composition and isotopic variation trends through the layered sequence1,2. For example, in the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, abrupt increases in initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios occur at the UG-2 and Merensky pegmatoid (or ‘reef’) horizons, both of which are exploited for PGEs. We report here the results of a detailed Sr-isotope study across the Merensky unit and its immediate foot- and hangingwall-rocks which, when considered together with new ideas on processes operating in magma chambers3–5, suggest that magma mixing and post-cumulus infiltration of liquids displaced from below were important during crystallization of the Merensky pegmatoid.

- Description: Al/Cr atomic ratios of coexisting spinellids and ortho- and clinopyroxenes show a pattern of sympathetic variation that persists through ultramafic rocks of layered mafic complexes of upper-crustal type, Alpine complexes, and the nodules found in kimberlites and alkaline basalts. Simple expressions are empirically derived to link (Al/Cr) orthopyroxene and (Al/Cr)spinel ratios in putatively equilibrated rocks. Equivalence of spinel compositions in shallow layered complexes and kimberlite nodules of deep-seated origin negates direct crystallochemical control of Al/Cr ratios of spinels by pressure.

The Springbok Flats basalt's chemical composition is compared with those of the Sabie River Formation of the Lebombo and the Lesotho type of the Central Karoo area. Sr- and Nd- isotopic data were also used in determining the chemical composition. The study also allows the geographical extent of the incompatible element-enriched clan of Karoo Lavas to be refined.

- Description: Outcrops of the Jurassic Karoo basalts and dolerites in central South Africa are remnants of an intracratonic continental igneous suite whose volume probably once exceeded 1.5 x 106 km³. Basic rocks with 6-8% MgO, 50-55% Si02 and Mg-number = 53-67 are overwhelmingly dominant in the Central area suite. Application of discriminant analysis to a data set of major and trace element analyses of the basic rocks confirms field and petrographic evidence that a number of compositionally distinct basalt magma types exist in the Central area.

- Description: The Karoo rocks are amongst the earliest manifestations of igneous activity accompanying the break-up of Gondwanaland during the early Mesozoic. Remnants of the once extensive lava sequence and the associated dolerite sills are found throughout southern Africa south of latitude 150S, the present outcrop being ca. 140,000 km². The main peak of volcanic activity is dated at about 190 m.y. and is probably coincident with the earliest stages of the opening of the Indian Ocean by the separation of Antarctica from southern Africa.

- Description: 143Nd/144Nd, 87Sr/86Sr, Sm and Nd analyses are reported on suites of Karoo volcanic rocks from the four sub-areas of Nuanetsi-north Lebombo, south Lebombo, the Central area, and north-west SWA/Namibia. Only seven (12%) of the samples analysed have positive ENd values similar to those found in the majority of recent mantle-derived rocks. Most of the rest have negative ENd (-1.0 to -17.1) and positive ESr, (+3.0 to +240) and thus must contain at least a contribution from source areas which were both old, and had lower Sm/Nd and higher Rh/Sr ratios than the bulk earth.

- Description: Major and trace element and 143Nd/144Nd (0.51209–0.51216) and 87Sr/86Sr (0.70879–0.71105) isotope analyses are presented on a representative group of lavas from the Vulsini district of the Roman magmatic province. Three distinct series are identified; the high-K and low-K series are similar to those described from other Italian volcanoes, while the third is represented by a group of relatively undifferentiated leucite basanites which are thought to be near-primary mantle melts.
