An enquiry on gender, religion and sport: the case of Muslim women residing in Malabar, Port Elizabeth

- Description: Modern sports have made many claims, one of which is to give surety of equality within sporting codes. They also specifically focus on providing equal rights to allow individuals to compete in sports. The political history of South Africa is particularly important as it is essentially linked to the capacity to participate in sport in South Africa. Therefore, it is safe to say that politics and sports are intrinsically entwined in the country. Sport played a vibrant role in the struggle against the system of apartheid and has a vigorous role to play in the transformation and nation-building of South Africa. Islam has been open to growth and development, adaptation, and even change. Since its revelation, Islam has been filtered through a succession of cultural growth, reflecting the complex ways in which religious beliefs and social reality accommodate one another. Islam possesses a unifying framework which is provided by the Quran (Islam’s primary source regarded by Muslims as God’s revealed word) as the quintessential source along with the Hadith (the statements and deeds of Prophet Muhammad [Peace be unto him]) and language of the religion of Islam. This unity is accompanied by a multitude of diversities that must be considered in any discussion regarding Islam and its practice by Muslims. The Muslim women presented in this thesis were specifically from the Malabar area in Port Elizabeth, where different interpretations or perspectives of Islam exist. Malabar was created in 1961 under the Group Areas Act of 1950 in terms of which the Apartheid government forced people of different race categories to live separately. In a variety of societies and communities where legislation, customs, and traditions are affected or inspired by interpretations of the Quran and Sunnah, they combine to define the roles and status of men and women. Within a specific Muslim society, however, these may vary from one class or generation to another. Muslim women’s lives and the choices they face are influenced as much by patriarchal social arrangements as they are by religious ideology. The research is centred around the interpretations of Islam and what these interpretations mean for Muslim women and their participation in sports, while also considering the interconnectedness of personal choice and the rules and regulations of Islam. The objective of this study was to critically analyse the effect that the different interpretations of Islam have on Muslim women’s participation in sporting activities, as iii well as the barriers that Muslim women face during their involvement in sports. The research adopted a qualitative research method in which 20 Muslim women were interviewed, with the use of semi-structured interview schedules, as well as participant observation to collect the necessary data. A case study method was used to share the data collected from interviews. Furthermore, an auto-ethnographic method is also utilized for self-reflection and to explore personal experience relevant to this research. This thesis also draws on the Marxist feminist theoretical approach, focusing on investigating and explaining how women are oppressed through systems of capitalism and private property. Marxism and feminism are theories of power, which is distributed unequally in society. In researching gender, religion, and sport, I found that the relationship between Muslim women and sport is understood in different ways because of different interpretations of Islam and its teachings, often between one generation to the next and amongst various Muslim communities. Thus, individuals who are passionate about their sport will go the extra mile to ensure participation. In some cases, this would be regardless of the rules and regulations of Islam. Muslim women across the world have made many strides and overcome many barriers in sport. Over the years, although not favourably portrayed in the media, participation by women has increased drastically over time. This thesis explores gender, religion, and sport as well as the ‘lived body’ experiences of veiled Muslim women in sport and physical activity. School managers as catalysts of innovative culture and academic performance: A case of selected schools in the Cofimvaba District in the Eastern Cape Province

The contemporary world has had a great deal of surmounting pressure from globalisation and other forces of a universalised society. These influences have become more and more pronounced with the inevitable influences of digitalisation and in the fourth industrial revolution. Information and Communication Technologies have transformed how things are done even within the settings of schools. Attempting to ignore this bold revolution for the so-called ‘tried and tested’ conventional methods of school management, assessment, learning, teaching and monitoring does not only leave a school or education system behind but inhibits leaners and stakeholders from enjoying the many benefits of innovation, creativity and flexibility. This study explores the role of school managers in creating and maintaining an innovative culture and academic performance in selected public schools of the Cofimvaba Education District which has become synonymous with declining pass rates post-1994. A qualitative research approach was used where existing literature collected, collated and thematically analysed. The findings of the study indicated that the school principals are not empowered or willing enough to catalyse the creation and sustaining of innovative cultures in schools. There was also a political willingness of the leaders of the education sector in the Cofimvaba Education District is deficient, the absence of sanctions for failure to innovate is a challenge to innovation. Other findings include evidence policy gaps on what is innovation and who must do what in schools which affects the efficacy of school managers. The study also established that the bureaucratisation of the education sector has done nothing by crippled school managers’ ability to innovate by school managers. The study recommends strategies on how school managers can become that active catalyst that they should be, to drive innovation include in-service training and setting minimum benchmarks for school managers eligibility. Also, policy interventions such as 4th industrial revolution aligned innovation regulations, exchange of ideas with countries which successful school innovation formulating a sanction model of non-performers, towards improving access and quality of education in the Cofimvaba Education District. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Management and Commerce, 2020

Colonial displacements and African coping strategies: The experience of BaTonga of Binga, Zimbabwe, 1956-2008

- Description: This study examines the challenges faced by BaTonga in livelihood reconstruction after involuntary displacement and resettlement from the Zambezi valley to pave way for the Kariba dam reservoir. It shows how they were forcibly evicted without compensation because of the racist policies of Southern Rhodesia. Their resettlement into an arid region infested with marauding elephants, malaria and tsetse fly undermined their complex livelihoods and eroded their self-sufficiency, but the study argues that they were active and resilient agents who adopted complex coping strategies. It shows how they had to adapt to dry-land farming and counter the effects of wildlife which plundered their crops and managed to secure the harvest in the drought-prone region. The study shows that although they adopted precarious livelihoods, they managed to survive under extreme circumstances for decades without any external assistance until the coming of NGOs who began to distribute free food from 1982. It argues that prolonged distribution of emergence food aid may not have been necessary, but its coming for almost three decades largely served political interests of both the NGOs and their governments. This perpetuated poverty as BaTonga also manipulated its distribution as a coping strategy against fragile livelihoods. This caused dependency which further plunged them into chronic food insecurity because they abandoned their traditional coping strategies. The study argues that both the colonial and postcolonial government as well as NGOs failed to address the root causes of livelihood insecurity in Binga for the five decades under study. It is therefore the contention of this study that the problem of food insecurity in Binga was not only an issue of recurring drought but was deeply rooted and pervasive due to multiple complex factors which made it difficult for the people to establish sustainable food production after displacement. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Humanities, History, 2022

Climate for changing lenses: Reconciliation through site-specific, media arts-based environmental education on the water and climate change nexus in South Africa and Canada

- Description: This study took place in the context of a growing racialised global water crisis and increasing demands worldwide for transforming higher education at institutions of ongoing settler colonialism. It presents a conceptualisation of what education, research and activism can look like and unfolded inside a doctoral research project that expands what doctoral education can look like. Using a media arts-based praxis process, I developed a relational model of university curriculum –site-specific, media arts-based, environmental education –with potential to cultivate relations (human and nonhuman) towards reconciliation while contributing to justice at the water-climate change nexus. My aim as a settler-ally was to expand my teaching and curriculum practices, thereby also offering curriculum transformation inspiration to others. My research was rooted in my concept of reconciliation as a practice towards thriving together, where the ‘together’ was inclusive of both humans and nonhumans. The curriculum engaged students in de/re/constructing water narratives through making site-specific videos focused on local water bodies. Decolonising artistic approaches known as slow media and soundscape recording were strategically incorporated into audio/video mapping assignments where students observed water aesthetics in ways that shifted their perceptions about water and entities entangled with it. Students met with Knowledge Keepers (Indigenous and non-Indigenous people from outside the academy with existing relationships to water bodies). A photovoice methodology was used in these meetings with Knowledge Keepers to reconfigure traditional film director-subject power relations. Guest lecturers from non-traditional backgrounds contributed diverse perspectives. Ecomotricity was incorporated, whereby students were in deliberate movement in/with water bodies through canoeing together. The curriculum culminated in a public screening/education event where resulting videos, interspersed with educational games facilitated by students, surfaced emotions, knowledge co-production and new synergies amongst the event’s temporary community. Through two iterations of the curriculum, where I co-designed and taught a course called Making Waveforms, one in Vancouver, Canada and one in Cape Town, South Africa, I explored the primary research question: How can a relational site specific, media arts-based university environmental education curriculum cultivate students’ relational sensibilities and abilities oriented towards reconciliation of diverse peoples and ecosystems in South Africa and Canada? Iterating the curriculum across these two contexts allowed me to assess which aspect(s)of the curriculum may have been applicable across these and other contexts. By using mixed methods of data collection and sharing throughout the research journey, I explored the sub-questions: a) How is reconciliation understood currently by university students in South Africa and Canada? and b) How can a relational site-specific, media arts-based university environmental education curriculum and my PhD methodologies (PhD-by-publication, website, and participatory approaches to podcasting, video making, and song creation), contribute to decolonising higher education, and thereby further contribute to reconciliation of diverse peoples and ecosystems in South Africa and Canada? Integral to my praxis process, I undertook a PhD-by-publication that involved writing four academic journal articles, with each paper presenting a key stage in the process. The papers, all of which have been submitted to peer-reviewed academic journals, form part of this thesis and can be found in the Appendices. The course was originally developed around Donati’s (2011) relational sociology and Gergen’s (2009) relational education theory. Throughout my praxis process, I expanded my theoretical influences as called for by the research and teaching practice. The journey behind my first PhD paper, (Towards) Sound research practice: Podcast-building as modeling relational sensibilities at the water-climate change nexus in Cape Town, began when I officially started my doctoral studies in early 2018. The paper was co-authored with a fellow PhD scholar from Rhodes University’s Environmental Learning Research Centre (ELRC), Anna James. It presents an experimental arts-based methodology we co-developed for doing contextual profiling by building a socially-engaged podcast series, called Day One, to explore the lived experiences of the Cape Town water crisis of 2018. It includes my initial tool of analysis for exploring how the curriculum might cultivate relational sensibilities and abilities towards reconciliation. The podcast pedagogy offered opportunities to develop some relational learning processes. The analytical tool was developed from cross-referencing reconciliation and relational educational theories. This paper also incorporated theories in relational solidarity and social movement learning. The podcast episodes included personal narratives that, in turn, revealed diverse ideologies and polarisations in the water situation. Working with the audio medium highlighted possibilities for creating and shifting affective relations. Recording and editing soundscapes of waterbodies began explorations of the agential qualities of water. These were foundational dynamics to explore in building the reconciliation curriculum. The paper is published in the International Journal of New Media, Technology, and the Arts (2019, Volume14, Issue1). My second PhD paper, A media arts-based praxis process of building towards a relational model of curriculum oriented towards reconciliation through water justice, presents my methodology for and analysis of a pilot course I co-designed and taught at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECUAD) in Vancouver, Canada in 2018. This course served as contextual profiling around the water situation in Vancouver. The course was offered in partnership with a science-based environmental non-profit called the David Suzuki Foundation and an Indigenous-led post-secondary school called the Native Education College. The course’s public event was hosted at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum. At this stage, I was introduced to Cree/Métis filmmaker, Gregory Coyes, and his Indigenous cinematic narrative approach known as Slow Media. Integrating slow media into video mapping assignments presented exciting possibilities for shifting views and valuing of water. This was the stage at which my concept of reconciliation expanded to explicitly include nonhumans. I applied my initial analytical tool to the curriculum here, which revealed the three most prominent relational sensibilities and abilities towards reconciliation cultivated by students through the course: (1) knowledge ecologies; (2) a hopeful social imaginary; and (3) embodied ways of knowing. I began to make connections between the curriculum and Mi’kmaq elder Albert Marshall’s concept of ‘Two-Eyed-Seeing’, and expanded the notion to ‘Three-Eyed-Seeing’ to include artistic approaches. Deeply inspired by Bekerman and Zembylas’s (2012) Teaching Contested Narratives, I began to see the growing importance of the narrative aspects of reconciliation education. The paper is published in the University of Pretoria’s Journal of Decolonising Disciplines (2021, Volume 1, Issue 2). My third PhD paper, Water as artist-collaborator: Posthumanism and reconciliation in relational media arts-based education, presents a 2019 iteration of the curriculum at ECUAD in Vancouver, and illustrates my shift to include posthuman theories in my analysis. This course was offered in affiliation with the David Suzuki Foundation, and in collaboration with the Native Education College. The culminating public event was hosted by the Beaty Biodiversity Museum. Decentring the human in this data analysis better supported my research and curricular aims. The strong technoculture of the media arts-based curriculum fits well with many posthuman concepts. This posthuman reading of the course and data enabled me to see what changes were emerging through student-water-technology intra-actions, and how these supported relations towards reconciliation as well as water justice. Most notable of these changes was the emergence of water’s agential qualities, specifically of water as becoming collaborator in artistic/knowledge co-production, where students think with water. I argued this contributes to reconciliation by decentring the human, enabling relations in which power is more equal, and where there are greater possibilities for mutual responsibility between related entities. This is where I developed the concept of audio/video as relational texts, supporting the creating and shifting of affective relations more than the monumentalised verbal/written knowledge of traditional universities. This is also where I realised that relational work towards reconciliation would require engaging with the hidden curriculum of institutions. The paper is published in the journal Reconceptualizing Educational Research Methodology (2021, Volume 12, Issue 1), as part of a special issue on Posthuman Conceptions of Change in Empirical Educational Research. My fourth PhD paper, originally entitled Making waveforms: Implicit knowledge representation through video water narratives as decolonising practice towards reconciliation in South Africa’s higher education, presents an analysis of the 2019 iteration of the curriculum in South Africa. I co-designed and led a course called Making Waveforms at the University of Cape Town’s Future Water Institute (FWI) in collaboration with Rhodes University. The course was co-designed/facilitated with FWI’s Research Fellow Amber Abrams, who also co-authored this paper. The course’s public event was hosted by a non-profit organisation called the Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education. This paper explored the ways that non-verbalisable, implicit learning –understood as part of many non-Euro/Western ways of knowing– takes place in the Making Waveforms course and how this influenced water-specific climate behaviours while contributing to decolonised reconciliation practice for higher education institutions. Drawing on theories of implicit and explicit knowledge, we first showed how implicit learning primarily took place through: 1) site-specific audio/video mapping of water bodies; 2) meetings with Knowledge Keepers; and 3) an interactive public screening event. We highlighted how this non-verbalisable learning produced feelings of empathy for diverse peoples and waterways, as well as aesthetic appreciation of water, and how this can contribute to more response-able water behaviours. This, we argued, supported the valuing of implicit knowledge within a traditional educational setting, thereby pluralising knowledge, and was key to reconciliation/decolonisation in higher education. Iterating the curriculum for the South African context emphasised the importance of context-specificity of the course overall, and also of the relational work embedded in the curriculum. This paper is under review by the University of Toronto’s journal Curriculum Inquiry (CI). Following receipt of CI's internal review process, the title of the paper has since been updated to Non-verbalisable, implicit knowledge through cellphilms as decolonised reconciliation practice towards response-able water behaviours in South Africa. Through reflective analysis of my four papers, I developed a concept for an Anatomy of Decoloniz/sed Curriculum consisting of five key parts: 1) relationality; 2) multimodality; 3) narratives/counter-narratives; 4) context-specificity; and 5) unhidden curriculum. Four meta reflections have been included in this thesis, each corresponding with one of the four papers, and presented chronologically according to the stage of the praxis process with which they correspond. In these meta reflections, I applied Kolb’s (1984) Experiential Learning Cycle model for reflective writing, based on the premise that through experiences we can expand our understanding, and included four key stages: 1) concrete experience; 2) reflective observation; 3) abstract conceptualisation; and 4) active experimentation. For the concrete experience, I provided a thick description of my process in writing the paper, as well as aspects of the phase in my praxis process that was the focus of the paper, not included in but relevant to the paper. For the reflective observation, I identified any aspects of the experience that were new to me and which therefore presented opportunities for me to learn. For the abstract conceptualisation, I critically analysed my concrete experience and reflective observation to determine which, if any, of the five key parts of the Anatomy of Decoloniz/sed Curriculum that I outline in my introduction relate to this phase of my PhD praxis process. For the active experimentation, I made conclusions about the extent to which this phase of my PhD embraced decoloniality in practice, and built on this new understanding to make recommendations for myself and others committed to the decolonial project as part of my contribution to knowledge. These meta reflections also invite readers to follow my personal narrative of becoming-with water, meaning my transformation from being water illiterate to embracing a ‘watershed mind’ (Wong,2011). Multimodality, which I propose as a key part of an Anatomy of Decoloniz/sed Curriculum, is embedded in the representational aspects of this thesis. The courses I co-designed and taught as part of this project resulted in the creation of 20 short student films. My contextual profiling involved a podcast methodology that was ongoing throughout my study, as a model of decolonised research-communication-education-action at the water-climate change nexus. This methodology resulted in the creation of four Day One podcast episodes, co-produced with a PhD colleague, Anna James. Some of these episodes are available in all three main languages of Cape Town (Xhosa, Afrikaans, and English). I evolved the podcast methodology in a later stage of my praxis process as a form of member checking with contributors involved in various stages and aspects of the research. Once the four papers were written, I created a series of four short videos called In the Flow, with each video representing a translation of one of the four papers. I invited various contributors of the research project to either watch one or more of the In the Flow videos and/or read one or more of the academic papers, and then to respond in a Zoom call with me. The responses were then shared publicly in a series of seven Climate for Changing Lenses podcast episodes. Parts of these are included in a final song/music video called Please Don’t Blow It. A Climate for Changing Lenses website was created to host all of this multimedia content that forms part of this thesis. A link to this website is provided in the Introduction section of this thesis. My research contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the areas of relational and reconciliation pedagogy, decolonising higher education, arts-based teaching, learning and research methodologies and the water-climate change nexus. - Description: This study took place in the context of a growing racialised global water crisis and increasing demands worldwide for transforming higher education at institutions of ongoing settler colonialism. It presents a conceptualisation of what education, research and activism can look like and unfolded inside a doctoral research project that expands what doctoral education can look like. Using a media arts-based praxis process, I developed a relational model of university curriculum –site-specific, media arts-based, environmental education –with potential to cultivate relations (human and nonhuman) towards reconciliation while contributing to justice at the water-climate change nexus. My aim as a settler-ally was to expand my teaching and curriculum practices, thereby also offering curriculum transformation inspiration to others. My research was rooted in my concept of reconciliation as a practice towards thriving together, where the ‘together’ was inclusive of both humans and nonhumans. The curriculum engaged students in de/re/constructing water narratives through making site-specific videos focused on local water bodies. Decolonising artistic approaches known as slow media and soundscape recording were strategically incorporated into audio/video mapping assignments where students observed water aesthetics in ways that shifted their perceptions about water and entities entangled with it. Students met with Knowledge Keepers (Indigenous and non-Indigenous people from outside the academy with existing relationships to water bodies). A photovoice methodology was used in these meetings with Knowledge Keepers to reconfigure traditional film director-subject power relations. Guest lecturers from non-traditional backgrounds contributed diverse perspectives. Ecomotricity was incorporated, whereby students were in deliberate movement in/with water bodies through canoeing together. The curriculum culminated in a public screening/education event where resulting videos, interspersed with educational games facilitated by students, surfaced emotions, knowledge co-production and new synergies amongst the event’s temporary community. Through two iterations of the curriculum, where I co-designed and taught a course called Making Waveforms, one in Vancouver, Canada and one in Cape Town, South Africa, I explored the primary research question: How can a relational site specific, media arts-based university environmental education curriculum cultivate students’ relational sensibilities and abilities oriented towards reconciliation of diverse peoples and ecosystems in South Africa and Canada? Iterating the curriculum across these two contexts allowed me to assess which aspect(s)of the curriculum may have been applicable across these and other contexts. By using mixed methods of data collection and sharing throughout the research journey, I explored the sub-questions: a) How is reconciliation understood currently by university students in South Africa and Canada? and b) How can a relational site-specific, media arts-based university environmental education curriculum and my PhD methodologies (PhD-by-publication, website, and participatory approaches to podcasting, video making, and song creation), contribute to decolonising higher education, and thereby further contribute to reconciliation of diverse peoples and ecosystems in South Africa and Canada? Integral to my praxis process, I undertook a PhD-by-publication that involved writing four academic journal articles, with each paper presenting a key stage in the process. The papers, all of which have been submitted to peer-reviewed academic journals, form part of this thesis and can be found in the Appendices. The course was originally developed around Donati’s (2011) relational sociology and Gergen’s (2009) relational education theory. Throughout my praxis process, I expanded my theoretical influences as called for by the research and teaching practice. The journey behind my first PhD paper, (Towards) Sound research practice: Podcast-building as modeling relational sensibilities at the water-climate change nexus in Cape Town, began when I officially started my doctoral studies in early 2018. The paper was co-authored with a fellow PhD scholar from Rhodes University’s Environmental Learning Research Centre (ELRC), Anna James. It presents an experimental arts-based methodology we co-developed for doing contextual profiling by building a socially-engaged podcast series, called Day One, to explore the lived experiences of the Cape Town water crisis of 2018. It includes my initial tool of analysis for exploring how the curriculum might cultivate relational sensibilities and abilities towards reconciliation. The podcast pedagogy offered opportunities to develop some relational learning processes. The analytical tool was developed from cross-referencing reconciliation and relational educational theories. This paper also incorporated theories in relational solidarity and social movement learning. The podcast episodes included personal narratives that, in turn, revealed diverse ideologies and polarisations in the water situation. Working with the audio medium highlighted possibilities for creating and shifting affective relations. Recording and editing soundscapes of waterbodies began explorations of the agential qualities of water. These were foundational dynamics to explore in building the reconciliation curriculum. The paper is published in the International Journal of New Media, Technology, and the Arts (2019, Volume14, Issue1). My second PhD paper, A media arts-based praxis process of building towards a relational model of curriculum oriented towards reconciliation through water justice, presents my methodology for and analysis of a pilot course I co-designed and taught at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECUAD) in Vancouver, Canada in 2018. This course served as contextual profiling around the water situation in Vancouver. The course was offered in partnership with a science-based environmental non-profit called the David Suzuki Foundation and an Indigenous-led post-secondary school called the Native Education College. The course’s public event was hosted at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum. At this stage, I was introduced to Cree/Métis filmmaker, Gregory Coyes, and his Indigenous cinematic narrative approach known as Slow Media. Integrating slow media into video mapping assignments presented exciting possibilities for shifting views and valuing of water. This was the stage at which my concept of reconciliation expanded to explicitly include nonhumans. I applied my initial analytical tool to the curriculum here, which revealed the three most prominent relational sensibilities and abilities towards reconciliation cultivated by students through the course: (1) knowledge ecologies; (2) a hopeful social imaginary; and (3) embodied ways of knowing. I began to make connections between the curriculum and Mi’kmaq elder Albert Marshall’s concept of ‘Two-Eyed-Seeing’, and expanded the notion to ‘Three-Eyed-Seeing’ to include artistic approaches. Deeply inspired by Bekerman and Zembylas’s (2012) Teaching Contested Narratives, I began to see the growing importance of the narrative aspects of reconciliation education. The paper is published in the University of Pretoria’s Journal of Decolonising Disciplines (2021, Volume 1, Issue 2). My third PhD paper, Water as artist-collaborator: Posthumanism and reconciliation in relational media arts-based education, presents a 2019 iteration of the curriculum at ECUAD in Vancouver, and illustrates my shift to include posthuman theories in my analysis. This course was offered in affiliation with the David Suzuki Foundation, and in collaboration with the Native Education College. The culminating public event was hosted by the Beaty Biodiversity Museum. Decentring the human in this data analysis better supported my research and curricular aims. The strong technoculture of the media arts-based curriculum fits well with many posthuman concepts. This posthuman reading of the course and data enabled me to see what changes were emerging through student-water-technology intra-actions, and how these supported relations towards reconciliation as well as water justice. Most notable of these changes was the emergence of water’s agential qualities, specifically of water as becoming collaborator in artistic/knowledge co-production, where students think with water. I argued this contributes to reconciliation by decentring the human, enabling relations in which power is more equal, and where there are greater possibilities for mutual responsibility between related entities. This is where I developed the concept of audio/video as relational texts, supporting the creating and shifting of affective relations more than the monumentalised verbal/written knowledge of traditional universities. This is also where I realised that relational work towards reconciliation would require engaging with the hidden curriculum of institutions. The paper is published in the journal Reconceptualizing Educational Research Methodology (2021, Volume 12, Issue 1), as part of a special issue on Posthuman Conceptions of Change in Empirical Educational Research. My fourth PhD paper, originally entitled Making waveforms: Implicit knowledge representation through video water narratives as decolonising practice towards reconciliation in South Africa’s higher education, presents an analysis of the 2019 iteration of the curriculum in South Africa. I co-designed and led a course called Making Waveforms at the University of Cape Town’s Future Water Institute (FWI) in collaboration with Rhodes University. The course was co-designed/facilitated with FWI’s Research Fellow Amber Abrams, who also co-authored this paper. The course’s public event was hosted by a non-profit organisation called the Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education. This paper explored the ways that non-verbalisable, implicit learning –understood as part of many non-Euro/Western ways of knowing– takes place in the Making Waveforms course and how this influenced water-specific climate behaviours while contributing to decolonised reconciliation practice for higher education institutions. Drawing on theories of implicit and explicit knowledge, we first showed how implicit learning primarily took place through: 1) site-specific audio/video mapping of water bodies; 2) meetings with Knowledge Keepers; and 3) an interactive public screening event. We highlighted how this non-verbalisable learning produced feelings of empathy for diverse peoples and waterways, as well as aesthetic appreciation of water, and how this can contribute to more response-able water behaviours. This, we argued, supported the valuing of implicit knowledge within a traditional educational setting, thereby pluralising knowledge, and was key to reconciliation/decolonisation in higher education. Iterating the curriculum for the South African context emphasised the importance of context-specificity of the course overall, and also of the relational work embedded in the curriculum. This paper is under review by the University of Toronto’s journal Curriculum Inquiry (CI). Following receipt of CI's internal review process, the title of the paper has since been updated to Non-verbalisable, implicit knowledge through cellphilms as decolonised reconciliation practice towards response-able water behaviours in South Africa. Through reflective analysis of my four papers, I developed a concept for an Anatomy of Decoloniz/sed Curriculum consisting of five key parts: 1) relationality; 2) multimodality; 3) narratives/counter-narratives; 4) context-specificity; and 5) unhidden curriculum. Assuring the quality of mentoring in Malawi's 1+1 model of initial primary teacher education programme: implications for teacher development

The debates revolve around what models or approaches to teacher development produce high quality teachers as measured by their ability to promote student learning. This has given rise to a continuum of models. At the one extreme there are those who advocate practice first and theory later; at the other there are those who recommend theory first and then practice. In between there is a combination of a variety of approaches. The models of teacher development, however, continue to grapple with the problem of how to balance theory and practice. In Malawi, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) (MIE, 2006) came up with what they see as a balance between theory and practice when they introduced the 1 year of theory and 1 year of practice, a model referred to as the 1+1. The focus of this study was on the one year of practical teaching where mentoring is critical; hence the particular attention to examine and understand how its quality was assured from the perspective of fitness for purpose and fitness of purpose. The study was anchored mainly in the post-positivist paradigm and the methodology used was the mixed-methods approach. A mixed methods sequential explanatory design comprising a survey followed by a case study was employed. For the survey, four sets of semi-structured questionnaires whose Cronbach Alpha Reliability Coefficients, α, were 0.971, 0.827, 0.859 respectively were developed using the Tailored Design Method; these were pilot tested and then administered through a drop-and-pick strategy to a census sample of 804 respondents comprising 92 school mentors, 92 school head-teachers, 4 Teacher Training College mentoring coordinators and 616 student teachers. A total response rate of 96percent was obtained. The case study design phase comprised six one-on-one face-to-face structured interviews; five focus groups; five non-participant observations; and a review of ten documents employing interview schedules, observations and document checklists as instruments for data collection. A total of 27 participants, three of whom did not participate in the survey phase, were involved in this phase. Quantitative data collected from either phase was analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 20 while content analysis was used to analyse qualitative data. As a mixed-method study, some of the qualitative data was quantitized and some of the quantitative data was qualititized; and integration of data was made during the following stages: research questions formulation, data collection, data presentation, and discussion and interpretation. The study revealed several weaknesses in assuring the quality of mentoring in the 1+1 IPTE model. First, the norms and standards for mentoring designed by the Ministry of Education were not used to guide the mentoring process. Instead, they were designed to fulfil accountability requirements of the Ministry of Education and Teacher Training Colleges rather than self-improvement. Hence, the study revealed that all the 92 schools had, therefore, no policies, practice codes and standards for monitoring mentoring casting doubt on the functioning of internal quality assurance. The study further revealed that 12 of the school mentors (13percent) had lower academic qualifications than their seventy-two student teachers they were mentoring; 35 of the school mentors (38percent) were at the entry grade of their teaching career; two of the mentors (2percent) (mentoring over twelve student teachers) were within the first three years of teaching, which means that they, themselves, were in need of being mentored; and all the school mentors had full time teaching responsibilities. As such, some student teachers indicated that they were not being assessed at all by their school mentors. This situation regarding mentors raises concerns over the subject knowledge levels of the mentors, the role model functions of the mentors and their competency to effectively mentor student teachers, as well as concerns regarding the quality of the mentoring programme and its outcomes. Findings from the study also revealed little or no monitoring of mentoring in schools as schools had no structures and systems for monitoring mentoring; and heavy workloads and financial constraints prevented college lecturers from monitoring mentoring in primary schools. However, on a positive note, the study revealed that 99percent of school mentors were trained for their mentoring roles and were receiving regular training which was provided regularly on a term-basis. Based on the above findings, the 1+1 Initial Primary Teacher Education model in Malawi is undermined by weak mentoring practices which have the potential to widen the theory and practice gap, and potentially impact on the quality of teachers produced. It is further recommended that the mentoring practices move away from the technicist approach and focus on the actual processes of mentoring; that norms and standards for school mentor selection and support are developed; that there should be more workshopping, seminars and conferences for mentors; and that schools should be assisted to develop collegial-emancipatory quality assurance systems for mentoring. A Pedagogy of Love: reflections on 25 years of informal vocational education and training practices in the commercial fishing industry in South Africa

- Description: This thesis is a reflection of informal vocational education and training (IVET) practices conducted by the Researcher in the commercial fishing industry between 1995-2021. Fourteen interventions took place during this time which involved several hundred sea-going employees who are disadvantaged by low levels of literacies and low/no Internet Computer Technology connectivity. The Production Programme was chosen as the focus of study and draws upon the influence of the other thirteen programmes. The purpose of the Production Programme was to teach technical fish processing skills to the production management teams and factory hands who work in the factories on board the vessels. The programme ran for five years and evolved through three distinct generations. At the heart of this work lies the question: ‘What made these programmes successful?’ This is an intra-programmatic study and seeks to identify the pedagogical practices which promoted or confounded the efficacy of the Production Programme; and based upon this understanding how such programmes could be improved, transferred, and taken to scale. These questions are both descriptive and explorative in nature. IVET is regarded as training which takes place outside of the formal South African National Qualifications Framework. This work is relevant because approximately 80% of sea-going staff neither finish school, nor get the opportunity of Post School Education and Training by going to a university, a technical institution, or a community college. This statistic is reflected in the general population (Department of Higher Education and Training [DHET], 2022). There is a fine line between being employed and unemployed for people working at this level in the formal economy which makes this project relevant to youth or persons who are ‘not in employment, education or training’ too. This means that for most South African adults IVET presents a significant opportunity for post-school education. Therefore, it is important to answer the questions raised above to rapidly improve inclusion of the majority of South Africans into meaningful education which improves livelihoods. The Theory of Practice Architectures (TPA), from the collection of social-material practice theories, is the conceptual framework for this thesis. The smallest unit of analysis of TPA are practices which may be ‘sayings/thinkings’, ‘doings’, or ‘relatings’. These practices bundle together into practice arrangements and form practice architectures. The reason that TPA was chosen was that practices were the only data available as we (learners, managers, facilitators, and me) knew what we had said/thought or done, and we were aware of the relationships between us over the years as the fourteen interventions played out. This is empirical, qualitative research and an ethnographic case study was chosen as the research design which is a methodology particularly suited to answering both descriptive and explorative questions. Nine methods for data collection were used, namely an historical reflective narrative; two focused-group interviews; three individual interviews; four Whatsapp videos; one WhatsApp voice note; two mobisodes; ten questionnaires; 29 documents; and 16 photographs. Because this data was collected under Covid-19 pandemic conditions, two conceptions were employed to guide the generation of data under these uncertain and constrained conditions. These were firstly, the ‘methodology of chance’ which allowed for a ‘methodological agility’; and secondly, the idea of ‘information power’ which is helpful in deciding on how much data is enough. In order to be explicit concerning a key research activity, the approach and method used to review the literature is explicated. Key practices were identified in the data set and described; and then the data was analysed using heuristics provided by TPA theorists. Seven Tables of Invention were used to synthesise the data arising from these practices. An eighth Table of Invention was used to synthesise all the practices and practice arrangements characterised; and to indicate how these evolved over time and space. The data description and analysis is supported by eight Analytic Memos, a comprehensive Data Code Table and a hyperlink to a data repository which provides access to oral and video material. The findings distinguished five key practices and practice arrangements which were: Practices of the Creation of Courseware; Practices of Teaching and Learning; Practices of Assessment; Practices of Love; Practices of Management. The thesis title is reflective of the impact which love has upon the pedagogical process of IVET. Based upon the analysis and synthesis of the corpus of data, practices which either promoted or confounded the Production Programme became visible; it is these insights which inform future improvements to similar programmes. Emanating from these findings, two overarching practice architectures (PA) were identified which restrained the Production Programme in the same manner that the banks of a river restrain a river, and yet simultaneously, are changed by the river over time. These are the PA of Methodology and Methods and the PA of Maturing Ecologies of Practices. The inferences drawn from the data were achieved through the use of deductive, inductive, and abductive reasoning. - Description: This thesis is a reflection of informal vocational education and training (IVET) practices conducted by the Researcher in the commercial fishing industry between 1995-2021. Fourteen interventions took place during this time which involved several hundred sea-going employees who are disadvantaged by low levels of literacies and low/no Internet Computer Technology connectivity. The Production Programme was chosen as the focus of study and draws upon the influence of the other thirteen programmes. The purpose of the Production Programme was to teach technical fish processing skills to the production management teams and factory hands who work in the factories on board the vessels. The programme ran for five years and evolved through three distinct generations. At the heart of this work lies the question: ‘What made these programmes successful?’ This is an intra-programmatic study and seeks to identify the pedagogical practices which promoted or confounded the efficacy of the Production Programme; and based upon this understanding how such programmes could be improved, transferred, and taken to scale. These questions are both descriptive and explorative in nature. IVET is regarded as training which takes place outside of the formal South African National Qualifications Framework. This work is relevant because approximately 80% of sea-going staff neither finish school, nor get the opportunity of Post School Education and Training by going to a university, a technical institution, or a community college. This statistic is reflected in the general population (Department of Higher Education and Training [DHET], 2022). - Description: Cattle industry improves livelihoods for many developing farmers in South Africa, however, ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBDs) pose a detriment impact on cattle success; this is due to their resistance to acaricide application. Thus, this study was conducted to determine the extent of acaricide resistance, serostatus of tick-borne pathogens, and geographic range of boophilid ticks in communal grazing cattle in the north-eastern regions of the Eastern Cape Province (ECP), South Africa. A total of 160 structured questionnaires were prepared and randomly administered to cattle farmers to investigate their knowledge, attitudes, and practice on ticks and TBDs affecting cattle, tick control methods used, and their knowledge of acaricide resistance. Engorged visible cattle ticks were collected seasonally from 10 randomly selected cattle from the community cattle herds during dipping days between October 2018 and September 2019, and stored into the labelled test tubes containing 70 percent ethanol. For TBDs determination, a total of 240 cattle from Elundini and Senqu Municipalities were seasonally used to investigate the prevalence of ticks and TBDs, packed cell volume (PCV), and body condition scores (BCS). Shaw Larval Immersion Test (SLIT) method was used to determine the resistance of Rhipicephalus decoloratus larvae to various acaricides such as amidines, organophosphate, and synthetic pyrethroids. This study indicates that approximately 59 percent of the interviewed cattle farmers had no knowledge of the effect of TBDs affecting cattle production, and 78 percent of respondents considered ticks are the major challenge to the success of their cattle farming. Pour-on (61 percent) was the most commonly used acaricidal treatment system with fortnightly (40 percent and 31percent) treatment frequencies during the summer and winter seasons respectively. Synthetic pyrethroids (73 percent) were the most used acaricide compounds to control ticks. Moreover, approximately 85 percent of respondents perceived that they do not practice acaricide rotation, and 88 percent of the respondents had no knowledge of acaricide resistance. Interestingly, the current study record Rhipicephalus microplus for the first time at Elundini, Senqu, and Walter Sisulu. Based on the morphological traits, a total of 6176 ticks belonging to two boophilid tick species of Rhipicephalus were identified: R. decoloratus (98 percent) and R. microplus (2 percent). Rhipicephalus decoloratus was significantly higher (P<0.05) in Elundini during the hot-dry (3.37±0.121) and hot-wet (3.35±0.121) seasons compared to other localit ies. In Senqu, R. microplus had high counts (P<0.05) during the post-rainy season (1.06±0.027) compared to other localities. From this present study, it was observed that Ehrlichia ruminantium was the most prevalent at Elundini (16 percent) and (14 percent) during post-rainy and hot-dry seasons respectively and 15 percent at Senqu during the post-rainy season. Babesia bigemina was more frequent at Elundini (18 percent) and Senqu (16 percent) during the post-rainy season and hot-wet season, respectively. Cattle BCS were significantly negatively correlated with E. ruminantium (P<0.01; r = -0.203), B. bovis (P<0.01; r = -0.125), and A. marginale (P < 0.01; r = -0.122). On the other hand, PCV was significantly negatively correlated with B. bigemina (P<0.01; r =-0.138). E. ruminantium was strongly positively correlated with Amblyomma hebraeum (P<0.05; r = 0.112), while B. bovis (P<0.05; r = 0.134) and B. bigemina (P<0.05; r = 0.188) were strong positively correlated with Rhipicephalus microplus infestation and B. bigemina (P<0.05; r = 0.077) with Rhipicephalus decoloratus. During acaricide resistance testing, Shaw Larvae Immersion Testing (SLIT) was only performed on R. decoloratus larvae as engorged R. microplus ticks could not meet the required sample size for resistance testing. The current study found that the majority of the tick were susceptible at exposure to differe nt acaricide field concentrations of amidines (49 percent at 250ppm), organophosphates (33 percent and 47 percent at 300ppm and 500ppm, respectively), and synthetic pyrethroids (44 percent and 23 percent at 150ppm and 300ppm, respectively). An investigation into yeast-baculovirus synergism for the improved control of Thaumatotibia leucotreta, an economically important pest of citrus

- Description: A mutualistic association between Cydia pomonella and yeasts belonging to the genus Metschnikowia has previously been demonstrated. Larval feeding galleries inoculated with M. andauensis, reduced larval mortality and enhanced larval development. Additionally, adult C. pomonella female oviposition preference was also shown to be influenced by the volatiles produced by M. andauensis. This mutualistic relationship was manipulated for biological control purposes, by combining M. pulcherrima with the baculovirus Cydia pomonella granulovirus. The combination of M. pulcherrima with brown cane sugar and CpGV in laboratory assays and field trials resulted in a significant increase in larval mortality. A similar observation was made when M. pulcherrima was substituted for Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This indicates that yeasts harbour the potential for use in biological control, especially when combined with other well-established biocontrol methods. Thaumatotibia leucotreta is a phytophagous insect endemic to southern Africa. It is highly significant to the South African citrus industry due to its classification as a phytosanitary pest by most international markets. An integrated pest management programme has been implemented to control T. leucotreta. The baculovirus Cryptophlebia leucotreta granulovirus forms one component of this programme and is highly effective. In this study, we proposed to determine which yeast species occur naturally in the gut of T. leucotreta larvae and to examine whether any of the isolated yeast species, when combined with the CrleGV-SA, enhance its effectiveness. Firstly, Navel oranges infested with T. leucotreta larvae were collected from geographically distinct citrus-producing regions across South Africa. This led to the isolation and identification of six yeast species from the gut of T. leucotreta larvae via PCR amplification and sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer region and D1/D2 domain of the large subunit. Six yeast species were identified, viz. Meyerozyma guilliermondii, Hanseniaspora uvarum, Clavispora lusitaniae, Kluyveromyces marxianus, Pichia kudriavzevii and Pichia kluyveri. Additionally, Saccharomyces cerevisiae was included as a control in all trials due to its commercial availability and use in the artificial diet used to rear T. leucotreta. Secondly, larval development and attraction assays were conducted with the isolated yeast species. Thaumatotibia leucotreta larvae that fed on Navel oranges inoculated with M. guilliermondii, P. kluyveri, H. uvarum, and S. cerevisiae had accelerated developmental periods and reduced mortality rates. Additionally, it was demonstrated that T. leucotreta neonates were attracted to YPD broth cultures inoculated with P. kluyveri, H. uvarum, P. kudriavzevii and K. marxianus for feeding. Thirdly, oviposition preference assays were conducted with adult T. leucotreta females to determine whether the isolated yeast species influence their egg-laying in two-choice and multiple-choice tests. Navel oranges were inoculated with a specific yeast isolate, and mated adult females were left to oviposit. Meyerozyma guilliermondii, P. kudriavzevii and H. uvarum were shown to influence adult T. leucotreta female oviposition preference in two-choice tests. However, multiple-choice tests using the aforementioned yeast species did not mimic these results. Lastly, a series of detached fruit bioassays were performed to determine the optimal yeast:virus ratio, test all isolated yeast species in combination with CrleGV-SA and to further enhance yeast/virus formulation through the addition of an adjuvant and surfactant. CrleGV-SA was applied at a lethal concentration that would kill 50 % of T. leucotreta larvae. The optimal yeast concentration to use alongside CrleGV-SA was determined. Pichia kluyveri, P. kudriavzevii, K. marxianus and S. cerevisiae in combination with CrleGV-SA increased larval mortality compared to CrleGV-SA alone. The inclusion of molasses and BREAK-THRU® S 240 to P. kudriavzevii and S. cerevisiae plus CrleGV-SA formulations greatly enhanced their efficacy. Additionally, semi-field trials were initiated using P. kudriavzevii and S. cerevisiae, with promising preliminary results being obtained, although more replicates need to be performed. This mutualistic relationship was manipulated for biological control purposes, by combining M. pulcherrima with the baculovirus Cydia pomonella granulovirus. The combination of M. pulcherrima with brown cane sugar and CpGV in laboratory assays and field trials resulted in a significant increase in larval mortality. A similar observation was made when M. pulcherrima was substituted for Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This indicates that yeasts harbour the potential for use in biological control, especially when combined with other well-established biocontrol methods. Thaumatotibia leucotreta is a phytophagous insect endemic to southern Africa. It is highly significant to the South African citrus industry due to its classification as a phytosanitary pest by most international markets. An integrated pest management programme has been implemented to control T. leucotreta. The baculovirus Cryptophlebia leucotreta granulovirus forms one component of this programme and is highly effective. In this study, we proposed to determine which yeast species occur naturally in the gut of T. leucotreta larvae and to examine whether any of the isolated yeast species, when combined with the CrleGV-SA, enhance its effectiveness. Firstly, Navel oranges infested with T. leucotreta larvae were collected from geographically distinct citrus-producing regions across South Africa. This led to the isolation and identification of six yeast species from the gut of T. leucotreta larvae via PCR amplification and sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer region and D1/D2 domain of the large subunit. Six yeast species were identified, viz. Meyerozyma guilliermondii, Hanseniaspora uvarum, Clavispora lusitaniae, Kluyveromyces marxianus, Pichia kudriavzevii and Pichia kluyveri. Additionally, Saccharomyces cerevisiae was included as a control in all trials due to its commercial availability and use in the artificial diet used to rear T. leucotreta. Secondly, larval development and attraction assays were conducted with the isolated yeast species. Thaumatotibia leucotreta larvae that fed on Navel oranges inoculated with M. guilliermondii, P. kluyveri, H. uvarum, and S. cerevisiae had accelerated developmental periods and reduced mortality rates. Additionally, it was demonstrated that T. leucotreta neonates were attracted to YPD broth cultures inoculated with P. kluyveri, H. uvarum, P. kudriavzevii and K. marxianus for feeding. Thirdly, oviposition preference assays were conducted with adult T. leucotreta females to determine whether the isolated yeast species influence their egg-laying in two-choice and multiple-choice tests. Navel oranges were inoculated with a specific yeast isolate, and mated adult females were left to oviposit. Meyerozyma guilliermondii, P. kudriavzevii and H. uvarum were shown to influence adult T. leucotreta female oviposition preference in two-choice tests. However, multiple-choice tests using the aforementioned yeast species did not mimic these results. Lastly, a series of detached fruit bioassays were performed to determine the optimal yeast:virus ratio, test all isolated yeast species in combination with CrleGV-SA and to further enhance yeast/virus formulation through the addition of an adjuvant and surfactant. CrleGV-SA was applied at a lethal concentration that would kill 50 % of T. leucotreta larvae. The optimal yeast concentration to use alongside CrleGV-SA was determined. Pichia kluyveri, P. kudriavzevii, K. marxianus and S. cerevisiae in combination with CrleGV-SA increased larval mortality compared to CrleGV-SA alone. The inclusion of molasses and BREAK-THRU® S 240 to P. kudriavzevii and S. cerevisiae plus CrleGV-SA formulations greatly enhanced their efficacy. Additionally, semi-field trials were initiated using P. kudriavzevii and S. cerevisiae, with promising preliminary results being obtained, although more replicates need to be performed. The aim of the study was to analyse the entrepreneurial development paths and livelihood strategies in smallholder irrigation schemes in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The study has outlined five hypothesizes for the basis of concrete scientific research. Initially the study hypothesizes that a smallholder’s socio-cultural contexts such as village level institutions especially village governance as well as household circumstances including age, education and gender compositions of the household membership as well as household income can determine a smallholder’s transformation ability. The second hypothesis was that alternative economic activities especially farming activities such as livestock and crop production as well as off-farm economic opportunities which were open to a household could influence a smallholder’s willingness to change from homestead gardening to food crop production under government irrigation programme. The third hypothesis was on the smallholder’s assessment of available market for the products of his or her food crop irrigation farming which could be an important consideration in his or her willingness to change. The fourth assumption was that entrepreneurial skills are lacking, in particular the ability to search for opportunities and willingness to do something different than the masses and take risks in that process. Finally, the study hypothesized that the government irrigation scheme governance could determine the attractiveness of the scheme and thereby influencing the willingness of a smallholder to participate. Specifically, the legal and regulatory environments are very restrictive and they are not conducive to effective value and job creation in the villages and for the principal crop and livestock enterprises. The study used cross-sectional data collected from both scheme farmers and non-scheme farmers. There were 107 smallholder farmers administered. Cobb-Douglass production and Multiple Regression Models were used. The results indicated 62 percent were male household head and 38 percent were female household head. The majority of the farmers were above middle age for both men and women households head. Specifically, about 80percent were above 51 years of age. Wage employment on the other hand contributed 8percent for both scheme and non-scheme farmers. The majority of the family members were dominated by students and pensioners indicating 27percent of the respondents who were unemployed, among them students were included and pensioners were indicated by 9percent. The overall findings were that there are important differences in behavior regarding the transition from homestead gardening to irrigation farming. Smallholder farmers of Mnquma and Mbhashe municipalities have a great potential in maize, beans, potatoes, pumpkin, butternut production, as well as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry production. Lastly, the study has highlighted various factors affecting livelihoods sources. Therefore, there is a need for these smallholder farmers to engage consistently with the market to enhance information flow. Extension officers must play a role using the recent extension approach of participatory rural appraisal through discussions with farmers and empower them for marketing problems and solutions. Smallholder farmers must ensure frequent consultation with extension or agricultural advisors for financial and production input support. Government need to strengthen agricultural activities in the rural areas in order to sustain rural livelihoods for rural dwellers. Realising the need for the development of an outwardly focused and globally competitive leadership model this study sought to investigate: The key generic leadership competencies relevant to globalisation The specific relevant leadership competencies and their prevalence within the industrial development zones Whether or not the surveyed individual competencies were significant and had an impact on global leadership competencies that rendered leaders capable of operating in a global environment. A multi-method research plan was followed in order to consolidate existing knowledge on global leadership competencies and then to expand upon that knowledge. The approach was preferred due to the lack of leadership competency research within Industrial Development Zones. The study consisted of a qualitative study leading to the assessment of the current state of knowledge and understanding of the global leadership competencies. This phase was aimed at stimulating a debate on the topic in preparation for the quantitative phase which investigated the prevalence of these global leadership competencies within the Industrial Development Zones. Through the literature review, fifteen global leadership competencies were identified and these formed the basis for the questionnaire used for data collection. This list of global leadership competencies should, however, not be seen as an exhaustive list as opinions varied on leadership competencies relevant to globalisation (Msomi, 2001; Rossouw & Bews, 2002). iv In the findings of this study: The respondents largely confirmed the prevalence of the global leadership competencies in the Industrial Development Zones. While there existed high internal consistency of the variables measured, the demonstration of the competencies by leaders in the Industrial Development Zones, as perceived by the respondents, was found to be largely insignificant and as such had no impact on global leadership competencies and the ability of the zones‟ leaders to operate in a global environment. Plant-fungal mutualism as a strategy for the bioremediation of hydrocarbon polluted soils

- Description: Inasmuch as coal remains the linchpin for the generation of electricity and liquid petroleum products in South Africa, hydrocarbon waste and coal discard will continue to pose a threat to the environment. Therefore, the onus is on the associated industries to develop and implement efficient and sustainable strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of energy generating activities on the environment. Most conventional efforts in this regard, although successful for soil repair and the initiation of vegetation, have been deemed unsustainable. In an effort to find a sustainable remediation strategy a novel technology termed “FungCoal” was conceptualized and patented as a strategy for the rehabilitation of open cast coal mines, carbonaceous-rich spoils and coal wastes. This biotechnology, which exploits plant-fungal mutualism to achieve effective biodegradation of coal on discard dumps and the breakdown of the carbonaceous component in spoils, promotes revegetation to facilitate rehabilitation of mining-disturbed land. However, one limiting factor of the FungCoal bioprocess is that it requires oxidized weathered coal, a highly complex and variable resource for use as a co-substrate, for growth and proliferation of the coal degrading microorganisms. To fully exploit the potential of plant-fungal mutualism and its interaction for use in the remediation of coal contaminated soils, this study investigated the proposed relationship between plant roots, root exudate and the coal degrading fungus “Aspergillus sp.” (previously Neosartorya fischeri) strain 84 in more detail, in an effort to gain further insight into the mechanisms underpinning plant-fungal mutualism as a strategy for re-vegetation of coal discard dumps and the rehabilitation of hydrocarbon-contaminated soil using the FungCoal approach. A pot-on-beaker (PoB) method was developed for the easy cultivation and collection of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS)-containing exudates from Zea mays L. (maize) and Abelmuschus esculentus (okra). Characterisation of the EPS material from these exudates was carried out using a combination of physicochemical and biochemical methods. The results from analysis of phenolics and indoles showed that exudates contain some form of indoles and phenolic compounds, although in little proportions, which may fulfil a signalling function, responsible for attracting soil microorganisms into the rhizosphere. Spectroscopic analysis of the exudates using FT-IR revealed vibrations corresponding to functional groups of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and carboxylic acids. These compounds likely provide an easily accessible source of carbon to soil microorganisms and are also a better alternative to the poly-aromatics which are an inherent component locked-up in the supposed recalcitrant coal material. The results from biochemical analyses also revealed the presence of carbohydrate, proteins, lipids, and low amounts of α-amino-nitrogen in the EPS of maize and okra. These components of EPS are all essential for the stimulation of enzymatic activities in soil microorganisms and, which may in turn aid biodegradation. The action of the root EPS from maize was further tested on three coal-degrading fungal isolates identified as Aspergillus strain ECCN 84, Aspergillus strain ECCN 225 and Penicillium strain ECCN 243 for manganese peroxidase (MnP) and laccase (LAC) activities. The results revealed that the Aspergillus species, strains ECCN 84 and ECCN 225, showed with or without EPS, observable black halos surrounding each of the colonies after 7d incubation indicative of positive MnP activity, while no activity was observed for the Penicillium sp. strain ECCN 243. Analysis for LAC revealed little or no activity in any of the coal degrading fungi following addition of pulverized coal to the growth medium. Interestingly, the addition of EPS-containing exudate to the coal-containing medium resulted in increased LAC activity for all fungal isolates. This finding affirmed the positive contribution of EPS to extracellular LAC activity, purported as an important enzyme in the coal biodegradation process. Finally, the impact of plant-derived exudate on the colonisation and biodegradation of coal was investigated in situ using rhizoboxes, to simulate a coal environment, and was carried out for 16 weeks. Microscopic examination of coal samples after termination of the experiment showed fungal proliferation and attachment to coal particles. All of the rhizoboxes that contained plants had higher medium pH and EC, and the concentration of phenolics, indoles and humic acids was greater than that of control treatments. These observations indicated better rhizosphere colonisation, substrate biodegradation and humification. Therefore, root exudate appears to play a significant role in coordination of soil microorganisms within the rhizosphere and likely serves both as a scaffold for rhizospheric interactions by providing microorganisms with accessible carbon and as a likely ‘trigger’ for induction of coal-degrading enzymes such as fungal LAC for mobilisation of recalcitrant carbon. This study has shown that EPS exuded from roots of Zea mays together with coal degrading fungus Aspergillus strain ECCN 84 can alkalinise the coal substrate and facilitate introduction of oxygen, possibly as a result of increased laccase activity, and increase availability of nutrients (as indicated by higher EC) in a coal-polluted rhizosphere, to provide plants and their associated mycorrhizae and presumably other beneficial microorganisms a more mesic environment for sustained phytoremediation with enhanced rehabilitation potential. This study has shown that EPS exuded from roots of Zea mays together with coal degrading fungus Aspergillus strain ECCN 84 can alkalinise the coal substrate and facilitate introduction of oxygen, possibly as a result of increased laccase activity, and increase availability of nutrients (as indicated by higher EC) in a coal-polluted rhizosphere, to provide plants and their associated mycorrhizae and presumably other beneficial microorganisms a more mesic environment for sustained phytoremediation with enhanced rehabilitation potential. Bone development was studied using osteometric and morphological data of dry bone remains coupled with bone mineral density analysis (Micro-CT). The methylation levels of CpG rich sites within the promoter region of selected bone-associated genes were incorporated to examine silencing of genes during development. Osteological results support the use of the pars basilaris, pars lateralis and femur for age-at-death estimations as well as provide the foundation for dry bone aging criteria for South African individuals. Data compared with established skeletal aging standards indicated developmental differences between populations. Through the use of animal models and the perinatal sternal rib tissue, insights and precautions into the use of post mortem bone derived RNA for forensic applications is communicated. In South Africa, the chubbyhead barb, Enteromius anoplus (Weber, 1897), is the most widespread freshwater fish species. The widespread occurrence of this species across different river basins raised questions on its taxonomic status due to the likely occurrence of hidden diversity. This further raised the need to evaluate the ecological patterns associated with likely occurrence of such hidden diversity. Phylogenetic analyses of the cytochrome b gene of E. anoplus populations across South Africa revealed the occurrence of four genetically distinct species. These findings supported the restoration Enteromius cernuus (Barnard 1943) stat. rev. from the Olifants River system; the restoration of Enteromius anoplus sensu stricto (Weber 1897) stat. rev. from the Gouritz River system; the redescription of Enteromius oraniensis (Barnard 1943) stat. rev. from the Orange River system; and the description of a new species, Enteromius mandelai sp. nov. from the Eastern Cape rivers. Analyses of morphometric and meristic data revealed that these species were differentiated based on barbel length and number of lateral line scales. Ecological studies on Enteromius mandelai were conducted within headwater streams of major river systems in the Eastern Cape region. These headwater streams had different catchment characteristics ranging from near-natural to anthropogenically-perturbed mainly due to agriculture-related disturbances and invasion of riparian zones by non-native plants. Stable isotope analysis provided evidence of trophic plasticity for E. mandelai across the different headwater streams. Specifically, E. mandelai exhibited large isotopic niches in agriculture-disturbed headwater streams, whereas small isotopic niches were observed in headwater streams invaded by non-native plants. Because of the evidence of trophic plasticity for E. mandelai, this study further hypothesized that this species would exhibit variable environmental niche patterns related to its distribution, abundance and the presence of contra-specifics due to different abiotic factors across its range. Enteromius mandelai was generally most abundant at sites with high total dissolved solids and sand substratum, which was characteristic of large pool habitats, and least abundant at sites with high turbidity. In the Great Fish River, E. mandelai occurred as the only species in most headwater sites, whereas in the Keiskamma and Buffalo River systems, it co-occurred with Amatolacypris trevelyani and Sandelia bainsii. Enteromius mandelai was, nevertheless, found to be ubiquitous together with having wide environmental niches, and exhibited no discernible patterns in its habitat associations. Exploring the structural integrity of a picornavirus capsid

- Description: Picornaviruses are a diverse family of small RNA viruses that cause a broad range of human and veterinary diseases. Despite decades of research into the molecular biology of these pathogens, no antivirals and few vaccines are commercially available for the treatment and prevention of picornavirus infections. The capsids of these non-enveloped viruses are involved in many important aspects of the picornavirus lifecycle, such as cell attachment and entry, uncoating, and protection of the viral RNA. Although the structures of many picornavirus capsids have been solved, a broader understanding of the molecular determinants that are required for structural integrity and stability is imperative for an improved understanding of the basic biology of these viruses, and for designing effective control strategies. Collectively, this thesis aims to elucidate the molecular determinants of structural stability and integrity in the Theiler’s murine encephalomyelitis virus capsid (TMEV). To study the TMEV GDVII capsid using biochemical techniques, neutralising polyclonal antibodies were generated against GDVII particles. The antibodies recognised linear epitopes in the C-terminus of the VP1 protein, but not those present in VP2 or VP3. The VP1 C-terminal residues were mapped to a loop above the putative receptor binding pit on the capsid surface, which prompted an investigation into the potential binding site of the TMEV co-receptor, heparan sulphate. Molecular docking revealed that heparan interacts with residues of the receptor binding pocket, as well as residues of the adjoining VP1 C-terminal loop. These findings suggest that the antibodies neutralise virus infection by preventing attachment of the virus to the co-receptor and possibly the unknown primary receptor. Few studies have identified the specific residues and interactions at subunit interfaces that significantly contribute to picornavirus capsid stability, assembly, and function. A novel in-silico screen was developed for the prediction of hotspot residues at protein-protein interfaces of a virus capsid. This screen can be applied to elucidate the residues that contribute significantly to the intraprotomer, interprotomer and interpentamer interfaces of any picornavirus capsid, on condition that the structure of the virus is available. The screen was applied to TMEV GDVII resulting in the identification of hotspots, several of which correspond to residues that are known to be important for aspects of the virus lifecycle, such as those that contribute to pH stability or form part of receptor binding sites. This observation suggests that residues involved in specific capsid functions may also play a role in capsid stability. Many of the residues identified as hotspots in TMEV corresponded to those required for assembly, uncoating, and virus growth in representative picornaviruses from various genera, suggesting that the residues that regulate capsid stability may be somewhat conserved across the family. Hotspots identified at the interpentamer interfaces of TMEV were individually substituted to alanine to further explore their importance to the TMEV lifecycle. All the amino acid substitutions prevented completion of the virus lifecycle as no CPE was observed following transfection of susceptible cells. Immunofluorescence experiments demonstrated that virus protein synthesis and RNA replication were not inhibited by substitution of the hotspot residues, but that infectivity was severely impeded. This confirmed that the residues were required for some aspect of the virus lifecycle, such as capsid assembly, or were critical for maintaining the conformational stability of the TMEV particles. Virus capsids become unstable and are prone to dissociation under certain conditions such as extreme pH and non-physiological temperatures. The thermostability of TMEV was explored by selecting GDVII virions with improved thermal tolerance through serial passage and heat exposure. Thermostable virions that could tolerate temperatures above 57 °C had reduced infective titres compared to the wild type TMEV suggesting that the virus adapted to thermal stress at the expense of viral fitness. Sequencing the capsid encoding regions of the mutant virions revealed a pair of amino acid substitutions that were present in all mutants. Additional substitutions that were unique to viruses selected at different temperatures were also identified. Most of the substitutions were located within the intraprotomer interfaces of the virus, unlike previous studies on enteroviruses where mutations were mostly localised to the receptor binding pocket. This thesis provides the first analysis of the structural determinants of TMEV capsid stability. - Description: This study investigated a behaviour of South Africa’s economy towards inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) from Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRICs) economies, during the period 1997 to 2016. The BRICs bloc was coined in 2001 by then chairperson of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Jim O’Neil. According to Goldman Sach (2001), the BRICs group was collectively expected to overtake the major economic powers over the span of a few decades. Their growth is expected to shape a new economic order and replace the currently dominant advanced economies. South Africa joined the BRICs bloc in 2010 as the jeweler of the world and as a gateway to Africa. It joined the BRICs group at the time when economic growth was at a sluggish rate, and the savings and investment were at the lowest rate. The country had a high unemployment rate, high levels of poverty and income inequality. On the other hand, the BRICs economies had limited intra-BRICs flows amongst themselves. It is against this background that this study investigated the long run impact of BRICs FDI inflows on South Africa’s economic growth, and the causality relationship between South Africa’s economic growth and BRICs FDI inflows. This study contributes to the body of knowledge of economics in South Africa and the literature on foreign direct investment and economic growth in South Africa. The study employed two cointegration methods to investigate the behaviour of South Africa’s economy towards inflows of foreign direct investment from BRICs economies. These are fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) and dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS). For granger causality, the study employed Stacked and Dumistrescu Hurlin tests. All the models used time series annual data from 1997 to 2016. The Unit root test results confirmed that the variables were stationary at first difference using panel Im, Pesaran, Shin (IPS) and Levin, Lin, Chu (LLC). The research employs four regressions, first, Economic growth and foreign direct investment (i.e. private sector, banking sector and both sectors), human capital, physical capital, household consumption, government expenditure, exports, and arable land; Second, Employment and foreign direct investment, human capital, physical capital, household consumption, government expenditure, exports, and arable land; third, Economic complexity and foreign direct investment, human capital, physical capital, household consumption, government expenditure, exports, and arable land; finally, Unemployment and foreign direct investment, human capital, physical capital, household consumption, government expenditure, exports, and arable land. The cointegration results for private FDI and economic growth, employment, economic complexity, and unemployment. The results show only economic complexity has significant effect on foreign direct investment and other variables show insignificant results. However, this effect is smaller compared to other growth determinants which are included in the regressions. The cointegration results for bank FDI. Other results government spending shows negative influence with employment but insignificant with economic growth, economic complexity and unemployment. The results for nonlinearity between the variables under review. The results that employment and economic complexity are nonlinear with foreign direct investment and no nonlinearity between unemployment, economic growth and foreign direct investment. For employment, low levels of foreign direct investment (LFDI_private) adversely affects employment but at higher levels (FDI_private_SQ) is insignificant. The study results suggest that the policy makers should focus the attention on lobbying foreign direct investment from BRICs economies, since this study shows positive impact and relationship between South Africa’s economic growth and BRICs FDI inflows. The BRICs economies should focus on enhancing investment partnership, preventing protectionism, and promoting intra-BRICS flows. In addition, South Africa should eliminate barriers affecting business with BRICs countries. - Description: This study investigated a behaviour of South Africa’s economy towards inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) from Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRICs) economies, during the period 1997 to 2016. The BRICs bloc was coined in 2001 by then chairperson of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Jim O’Neil. According to Goldman Sach (2001), the BRICs group was collectively expected to overtake the major economic powers over the span of a few decades. Their growth is expected to shape a new economic order and replace the currently dominant advanced economies. South Africa joined the BRICs bloc in 2010 as the jeweler of the world and as a gateway to Africa. It joined the BRICs group at the time when economic growth was at a sluggish rate, and the savings and investment were at the lowest rate. The country had a high unemployment rate, high levels of poverty and income inequality. On the other hand, the BRICs economies had limited intra-BRICs flows amongst themselves. It is against this background that this study investigated the long run impact of BRICs FDI inflows on South Africa’s economic growth, and the causality relationship between South Africa’s economic growth and BRICs FDI inflows. This study contributes to the body of knowledge of economics in South Africa and the literature on foreign direct investment and economic growth in South Africa. The study employed two cointegration methods to investigate the behaviour of South Africa’s economy towards inflows of foreign direct investment from BRICs economies. These are fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) and dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS). For granger causality, the study employed Stacked and Dumistrescu Hurlin tests. All the models used time series annual data from 1997 to 2016. The Unit root test results confirmed that the variables were stationary at first difference using panel Im, Pesaran, Shin (IPS) and Levin, Lin, Chu (LLC). The research employs four regressions, first, Economic growth and foreign direct investment (i.e. private sector, banking sector and both sectors), human capital, physical capital, household consumption, government expenditure, exports, and arable land; Second, Employment and foreign direct investment, human capital, physical capital, household consumption, government expenditure, exports, and arable land; third, Economic complexity and foreign direct investment, human capital, physical capital, household consumption, government expenditure, exports, and arable land; finally, Unemployment and foreign direct investment, human capital, physical capital, household consumption, government expenditure, exports, and arable land. The cointegration results for private FDI and economic growth, employment, economic complexity, and unemployment. The results show only economic complexity has significant effect on foreign direct investment and other variables show insignificant results. However, this effect is smaller compared to other growth determinants which are included in the regressions. The cointegration results for bank FDI. These results show more similarities with private FDI results and few differences. However, this effect is smaller compared to other growth determinants included in the regressions. These growth determinants, however, show a positive effect of human capital and household consumption on economic growth which is expected. Other interesting results are exports being positively related with economic growth and unemployment but negative with employment and insignificant with economic complexity. Another one is government spending negatively influence economic growth, employment and positively influence unemployment. But insignificant for economic complexity. Total FDI results and other variables. These results are also similar to private and bank FDI results discussed above. Economic complexity shows significant effect with foreign direct investment, yet other variables are insignificant. . Further results show human capital positively related with economic growth, which is expected. However, physical capital and household consumption negatively affects growth. Another one exports show positive influence on economic growth but negatively related with employment. Yet, insignificant with economic complexity and unemployment. Other results government spending shows negative influence with employment but insignificant with economic growth, economic complexity and unemployment. The results for nonlinearity between the variables under review. The results that employment and economic complexity are nonlinear with foreign direct investment and no nonlinearity between unemployment, economic growth and foreign direct investment. For employment, low levels of foreign direct investment (LFDI_private) adversely affects employment but at higher levels (FDI_private_SQ) is insignificant. For economic complexity, low levels of foreign direct investment are insignificant for economic complexity but at higher levels there is a positive effect of squared foreign direct investment on economic complexity. - Description: This study describes the design, synthesis, characterization and preliminary investigation of the solar-to-electrical energy conversion efficiency of ruthenium(II) functionalized polypyridine and phthalocyanine complexes with extended π-conjugation. Polypyridinyl functionalized with anthracene, 2,3-dimethylacrylic acid and 1-methoxy-1-buten-3-yne were synthesized and characterized by infrared, UV-Vis, photoluminescence, 1H and 13C NMR and elemental analysis. The functionalized polypyridine molecules were used to synthesize various ruthenium(II) homoleptic/heteroleptic and/or heteronuclear complexes and their photophysical and electrochemical properties evaluated. The preliminary results of the solar-to-electrical conversion efficiencies of some synthesized Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes were presented in chapter 5. It was found out as expected that the ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes containing either heteronuclear polypyridine ligands or their thiocyanate analogues of the types [Ru(L1)2L2(PF6)2], [RuL1(L2)2(PF6)2] and [RuL1L2(NCS)2], showed better photophysical properties (red-shifted metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) transitions concomitant with enhanced molar extinction coefficients), luminescence and interesting electrochemical redox properties than those containing homonuclear ligand types [Ru(L1)3(PF6)2]. The ruthenium(II) anthracenyl functionalized phthalocyanine complexes which were obtained by electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions in the peripheral positions gave good solubility properties in various organic solvents and also showed interesting near infrared absorption and electroredox characteristics. Cyclic and square wave voltammetries of these complexes revealed major redox processes and the numbers of electron(s) transfer were determined by chronocoulometry. It was established that a mono- and/or multi-electronic transfer reactions can occur in the various ruthenium(II) complexes. The photophysical properties of some complexes showed them to be better and promising candidates in the design of chemosensors, organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and as photosensitizers, while their redox-active natures make them potential mediators in electron-transfer for various photochemical processes. Integration of digital media and pedagogy in the twenty first century classroom: a survey of selected high schools in Eastern Cape, South Africa

- Description: The essence of this thesis was to study the effectiveness of integrating digital media technologies within the pedagogical approaches adopted and implemented in private and public high schools in a comparative manner. The study looked closely at private and public high schools of the Eastern Cape Province, to study the gaps of accessibility to technology by schools. The study identified the Eastern Cape Province as having a problem of poor performance in matric results at the end of each year as compared to other South African provinces. In order to select the relevant sample for the study, the researcher has utilized two secondary schools private and public in Makhanda Grahamstown and one public secondary school in Alice. The pragmatic paradigm was used to inform the study and used the mixed methods approach to data collection. The researcher distributed closed ended questionnaires to the learners in the three selected secondary schools and semi-structured interviews for the principals of the schools. The key findings reveal that the digital media tools are used for the teaching and learning purposes as well as communication to the schools’ stakeholders. The findings also revealed that various online platforms are utilized for teaching and sharing of information. For example, D6 and Ibambisa School Communicator app, WhatsApp groups for learners, Facebook, Instagram and School website for potential stakeholders. Hence, the results of this study should contribute to the field of ICTs and education in the country to solve the problems facing the teaching and learning systems of private and public schools of the Eastern Cape. Most schools (especially the public) do not have access to digital media tools in their classrooms. Thus, they still depend heavily on the textbooks, which may be outdated or not enough for all learners. In response to the issues faced by the Eastern Cape secondary schools and the findings, the researcher has suggested a model named the Digital Media and Pedagogy Integration DMPI Model of Communication. This model will contribute to the body of knowledge by providing advice to the Department of Basic Education on how teachers and learners can utilize digital media tools effectively. - Description: Crop farming in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is largely practiced by resource-poor farmers under rain-fed and unpredictable weather conditions. Since agriculture is the mainstay of SSA’s economy, the lack of improved and adapted agricultural technologies in this region sets back economic development and the fight against poverty. Overcoming this constraint and achieving the sustainable development goal to end poverty, requires innovative tools that can be used for weather risk management. One tool that has been gaining momentum recently is index-based crop insurance (IBCI). Since the launch of the first IBCI program in Africa around 2005, the number of IBCI programs has increased. Unfortunately, these programs are constrained by poor product design, basis risk, and low uptake of contracts. When these issues were first pointed-out in the earliest IBCI programs, many reports suggested satellite remote sensing (RS) as a viable solution. Hence, the first objective of this study was to assess how RS has been used in IBCI, the challenges RS faces, and potential contributions of RS that have not yet been meaningfully exploited. The literature shows that IBCI programs are increasingly adopting RS. RS has improved demarcation of unit areas of insurance and enabled IBCI to reach inaccessible areas that do not have sufficient meteorological infrastructure. However, the literature also shows that IBCI is still tainted by basis risk, which emanates from poor contract designs, the influence of non-weather factors on crop yields, imperfect correlations between satellite-based indices and crop yields, and the lack of historical data for calibration. Although IBCI reports cover vegetation and crop health monitoring, few to none cover crop type and crop area mapping. Furthermore, areas including high-resolution mapping, data fusion, microwave RS, machine learning, and computer vision have not been sufficiently tested in IBCI. The second objective of this study was to assess how RS and machine learning techniques can be used to enhance the mapping of smallholder crop farming landscapes. The findings show that machine learning ensembles and the combination of optical and microwave data can map a smallholder farming landscape with a maximum accuracy of 97.71 percent. The third objective was to identify factors that influence crop yields and crop losses in order to improve IBCI design. Results demonstrated that the pervasive notion that low yields in smallholder farms are related to rainfall is an oversimplification. Factors including fertilizer use, seed variety, soil properties, soil moisture, growing degree-days, management, and socioeconomic conditions are some of the most important factors influencing crop yields and crop losses in smallholder farming systems. This shows why IBCI needs to be part of a comprehensive risk management system that understands and approaches smallholder crop farming as complex by linking insurance with advisories and input supplies. Improved inputs and good farming practices could reduce the influence of non-weather factors on crop losses, and thereby reduce basis risk in weather-based index insurance (WII) contracts. The fourth objective of this study was to assess how well the combination of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical indices estimate soil moisture. As stated earlier, soil moisture was found to be one of the most important factors affecting crop yields. Although this method better estimated soil moisture over the first half of the growing season, estimation accuracies were comparable to those found in studies that had used similar datasets (RMSE = 0.043 m3 m-3, MAE = 0.034 m3 m- 3). Further interrogation of interaction effects between the variables used in this study and consideration of other factors that affect SAR backscatter could improve the method. More importantly, incorporating high-resolution satellite-based monitoring of soil moisture into IBCI could potentially reduce basis risk. The fifth objective of this study was to develop an IBCI for smallholder crop farming systems. The proposed IBCI scheme covers maize and derives index thresholds from crop water requirements and satellite-based rainfall estimates. It covers rainfall deficits over the vegetative, mid-season, and late-season stages of maize growth. The key contribution of this system is the derivation of index thresholds from CWR and site-specific rainfall conditions. The widely used approach, which calibrates IBCI by correlating yields and rainfall, exposes contracts to basis risk because, by simply correlating yield and rainfall data, it overlooks the influence of non-weather factors on crop yields and losses. The proposed system must be linked or bundled with non-weather variables that affect crop yields. Effectively, this means that the insurance must be linked or bundled with advisories and input supplies to address the influence of non-weather factors on crop losses. This system also incorporates a crop area-mapping component, which was found to be lacking in many IBCI systems. In conclusion, an IBCI that is based on crop water requirements, which incorporates crop area mapping and links insurance with non-weather crop yield-determining factors, is potentially capable of improving crop insurance for smallholder farming systems. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science and Agriculture, 2021

- Description: Crop farming in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is largely practiced by resource-poor farmers under rain-fed and unpredictable weather conditions. Since agriculture is the mainstay of SSA’s economy, the lack of improved and adapted agricultural technologies in this region sets back economic development and the fight against poverty. Overcoming this constraint and achieving the sustainable development goal to end poverty, requires innovative tools that can be used for weather risk management. One tool that has been gaining momentum recently is index-based crop insurance (IBCI). Since the launch of the first IBCI program in Africa around 2005, the number of IBCI programs has increased. Unfortunately, these programs are constrained by poor product design, basis risk, and low uptake of contracts. When these issues were first pointed-out in the earliest IBCI programs, many reports suggested satellite remote sensing (RS) as a viable solution. Hence, the first objective of this study was to assess how RS has been used in IBCI, the challenges RS faces, and potential contributions of RS that have not yet been meaningfully exploited. The literature shows that IBCI programs are increasingly adopting RS. RS has improved demarcation of unit areas of insurance and enabled IBCI to reach inaccessible areas that do not have sufficient meteorological infrastructure. However, the literature also shows that IBCI is still tainted by basis risk, which emanates from poor contract designs, the influence of non-weather factors on crop yields, imperfect correlations between satellite-based indices and crop yields, and the lack of historical data for calibration. Although IBCI reports cover vegetation and crop health monitoring, few to none cover crop type and crop area mapping. Furthermore, areas including high-resolution mapping, data fusion, microwave RS, machine learning, and computer vision have not been sufficiently tested in IBCI. The second objective of this study was to assess how RS and machine learning techniques can be used to enhance the mapping of smallholder crop farming landscapes. The findings show that machine learning ensembles and the combination of optical and microwave data can map a smallholder farming landscape with a maximum accuracy of 97.71 percent. The third objective was to identify factors that influence crop yields and crop losses in order to improve IBCI design. Results demonstrated that the pervasive notion that low yields in smallholder farms are related to rainfall is an oversimplification. Factors including fertilizer use, seed variety, soil properties, soil moisture, growing degree-days, management, and socioeconomic conditions are some of the most important factors influencing crop yields and crop losses in smallholder farming systems. This shows why IBCI needs to be part of a comprehensive risk management system that understands and approaches smallholder crop farming as complex by linking insurance with advisories and input supplies. Improved inputs and good farming practices could reduce the influence of non-weather factors on crop losses, and thereby reduce basis risk in weather-based index insurance (WII) contracts. The fourth objective of this study was to assess how well the combination of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical indices estimate soil moisture. As stated earlier, soil moisture was found to be one of the most important factors affecting crop yields. Although this method better estimated soil moisture over the first half of the growing season, estimation accuracies were comparable to those found in studies that had used similar datasets (RMSE = 0.043 m3 m-3, MAE = 0.034 m3 m- 3). Further interrogation of interaction effects between the variables used in this study and consideration of other factors that affect SAR backscatter could improve the method. More importantly, incorporating high-resolution satellite-based monitoring of soil moisture into IBCI could potentially reduce basis risk. The fifth objective of this study was to develop an IBCI for smallholder crop farming systems. The proposed IBCI scheme covers maize and derives index thresholds from crop water requirements and satellite-based rainfall estimates. It covers rainfall deficits over the vegetative, mid-season, and late-season stages of maize growth. The key contribution of this system is the derivation of index thresholds from CWR and site-specific rainfall conditions. The widely used approach, which calibrates IBCI by correlating yields and rainfall, exposes contracts to basis risk because, by simply correlating yield and rainfall data, it overlooks the influence of non-weather factors on crop yields and losses. The proposed system must be linked or bundled with non-weather variables that affect crop yields. Effectively, this means that the insurance must be linked or bundled with advisories and input supplies to address the influence of non-weather factors on crop losses. This system also incorporates a crop area-mapping component, which was found to be lacking in many IBCI systems. In conclusion, an IBCI that is based on crop water requirements, which incorporates crop area mapping and links insurance with non-weather crop yield-determining factors, is potentially capable of improving crop insurance for smallholder farming systems. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science and Agriculture, 2021

Foundation Phase teachers working in low resource contexts, however, being generalists rather than specialists, struggle to teach PE effectively, even when supplied with programmes by external experts. I was interested in finding out why, and what could be done to help them integrate Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) into their teaching, to benefit their learners. I proceeded from the hypothesis that teachers should play an active part in their own development, otherwise any Continual Professional Teacher Development (CPTD) would not bring about the change desired. I argued that if CPTD training and support is embedded within their context and based on teaching philosophies that foster teacher transformation, empowerment, and advocacy, then teachers might be more likely to commit to teaching PE. My aim in this study was thus to develop a collaborative process of CPTD with Foundation Phase teachers in low resource schools to enrich their pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) of PE and FMS within their contexts of social disadvantage. I initially adopted a qualitative design, but during this study, I realised that a more participatory approach was needed. I therefore present my study in two phases In Phase One, I answered the question: What are Foundation Phase teachers’ experiences of implementing PE in low resource schools? I did so to inform the design of an appropriately suited CPTD model for Phase Two of this study. I used a qualitative research design situated within the interpretive paradigm. I purposively sampled 24 Foundation Phase teachers to partake in semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis revealed three broad themes, namely, personal, and systemic barriers to PE, as well as positive responses to challenges. The overlap between themes was significant, highlighting the complexity of teachers’ experiences and perceptions of PE. Teachers’ positive responses emphasised that they possess the creativity and advocacy to overcome challenges posed and necessitated that I adopt a participatory design to work with teachers to develop a collaborative form of CPTD. Phase Two of this study was guided by the questions set by the participating teachers. Ten Foundation Phase teachers from two schools volunteered to be part of the study. In Cycle One they asked: What do we need to learn to be able to effectively implement PE? The findings of Cycle One led them to ask the following question in Cycle Two: How can we improve our confidence to teach PE within our school contexts? Participants did so through collaboratively creating PE lessons which they then implemented and evaluated. The findings of Phase Two highlighted how Foundation Phase teachers can be guided to empower themselves to overcome the barriers to teaching PE that they face in their low resource schools. Based on teachers’ CPTD experiences, I then addressed the third question of this study: What CPTD guidelines can be generated to enable Foundation Phase teachers to improve on and to implement their PCK of PE and FMS at low resource schools? Five CPTD guidelines aimed at collaborative and transformative PE-based CPTD focused on whole school transformation were identified. I provide a graphic depiction of the CPTD guidelines that explains how it can be operationalised. - Description: In many parts of the developing world, participation in the management of ‘protected areas’ is among the most tangible indices of how the rural population encounters formal conservation policies, strategies and ideologies. However, some scholars have argued that the sharing of the burdens and benefits of participation is devoid of equity. While some analysts have emphasised the imperative of multi-stakeholder participation in nature conservation, citing this as a crucial socio-ecological investment, others have highlighted the inherent contradictions in the process, describing it as an avenue for manipulation, tokenism and exploitation. This study is located in this debate and focuses on narratives around the participation of different stakeholders in the management of Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve and its adjacent communities in the rural Wild-Coast, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The researcher notes that research on the degrees and participation dynamics among various role players involved in the management of protected areas in South Africa, Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve in particular is limited. Against this background, this study contributes to ongoing discussions on protected area management in South Africa but seeks to expand this discussion by interrogating the nature and degrees of participation within the Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve - to deepen intellectual understanding on the significant role played by protected areas in engendering participatory democracy, equity, justice as well as meeting the needs of marginalised communities. Primary data for the thesis were collected using in-depth and key-informant interviews with officials from government institutions and parastatals, politicians and traditional authority figures. Focus group discussions were held with ‘youth’ participants as well as ‘elders’ in the Reserve’s adjacent communities. An analysis of policy and other government documents sought to outline the institutional attributes of protected areas management in South Africa and the underpinning ideas. A thematic analysis of the corpus of empirical information helped to show how these institutional attributes inhere in Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve as well as the epistemic challenge these attributes pose vis-à-vis indigenous ecological ideas and practices in the adjacent ‘indigenous’ communities. The study revealed that participation is perceived differently by various stakeholders due to multiple, mutually contradictory impulses. While institutional stakeholders attached great importance to the structural role of institutional frameworks, hence the vigorous reliance on formal conservation strategies, narratives from community members drew attention to ‘equity deficits’. The study also found that while the selected Reserve may have fostered cooperation between government and the adjacent communities, conflict and distrust ran deep between these stakeholders. From these and other findings, the study concluded that ecological participation in the study area was characterised by clusters of stakeholders who regard one another as ‘epistemic outsiders’ and related to one another as such, with practical consequences – especially for the long-term sustainability of the Reserve.
