  • Description: Some young men came to see the chief who asked each in turn how their homes were. They said they were all alright except for Mdoka who had been stung by a bee on his lips. This gave rise to a song about his misfortune. The others also told the chief their stories including one about the fish they were catching and he sang a canoe song "Kanye Kanye madoda, Kanye kanye haiye." 'A' before a name is the local honorific equivalent of Mister. Story song with clapping.

The significance of the elsatic belt was not explained, except to say that only 'rich' men could afford elastic. The song is about a certain Lomwe man, her husband, who, she sings is very poor and dressed only in rags which fall to pieces if you try to sew them up on the sewing machine. "Let me go and marry another man who does not have so many patches on his trousers which break the sewing machine." During the item the sound of the winnowing of bran from the corn in a sieve can be heard. Pounding song with pestle and mortar.

  • Description: This dance song reflects a local tragedy. There was a certain white man, popularly called 'Kawoko', a game warden in this district, they say, who had only one hand. There had been a recent campaign to shoot baboons (in 1949) which were destroying the fields. During the shooting, they allege, he missed the baboons but shot some of the men who were driving the baboons out of the bush. The African beaters also had guns and were shooting and some say it was their eratic shooting which caused the casualities. Three men died that day and Kawoko was blamed as he was in charge of the group. He left the district shortly afterwards. But when he came back the next day the elder sister was not at home and he asked the younger sister to marry him instead. She said, "What about my elder sister, and what would we do with her?" The elder sister heard about the proposal to the younger sister, she cooked food, put poison in it and gave it to the young man so he died. When they were taking his body to the grave they sang this song: "Baiwelu, you were killed by Berita (the name of the elder sister). But when they sang this song the dead Bauwelu heard it and became alive again." Story with song "Ntano" with clapping.

  • Description: This Msitso, orchestral introductions to the Ngodo dance are fine examples of the classical style of starting the performance. Each Msitso is composed as pure music without a lyric base and Komukomu who dies in 1962 was a master of his craft, both as leader of his orchestra and a composer for over 30 years (See "Chopi Musicians" page 39). "Hingane malala". Full text and translation are on pages 47 and 51 of "Chopi Musicians. Owing to the shortage of acetate discs in South Africa during the 1939-45 war, this Ngodo was not recorded in full. Orchestral dance with six Timbila xylophones.
