- Description: In 1985, the Central Statistical Services and the Chamber of Mines ceased publishing a racial breakdown of mining industry employment. This marked the end of a statistical series that dated back for almost 100 years. Since 1985, there is no official series of racially segmented data for the mining industry, while the racial breakdown of employment in all other sectors of the economy was published up until 1992. From 1993, the Central Statistical Services introduced a new “Unspecified Race” category into its published employment data, making the identification of trends in employment and income by race less certain. The statistical information on racial issues in this submission must reflect these difficulties with the data. In respect of gold and coal mines that are members of the Chamber of Mines, the Chamber periodically has made available unpublished information on employment and total wages after 1985, grouped into “skilled employees” and “unskilled / semi-skilled employees.” Until about 1989, when legal barriers to the employment of blacks in skilled jobs were removed, the two Chamber categories reflect the old “White” and “Non-White” categories used by the Chamber before 1986. Since 1989, a small, but slowly increasing number, of skilled workers have been black, but this has not been taken into account in any of the statistics presented for the gold and the coal sectors. “Black” employment in the gold and coal mining industry thus refers to employees in Categories 1 to 8, the only groups for which the NUM currently bargains with Chamber member mines.

- Description: A high-performance liquid chromatographic analysis of erythromycin in human serum and urine with UV detection at 200 nm is presented. The method involves a solid-phase extraction procedure followed by a simple phase separation step and chromatography on a reversed-phase column. The method has sensitivity limits of 0.25 and 1.0 g/mL in serum and urine, respectively, and is sufficiently sensitive to monitor concentrations of erythromycin in human serum and urine after the administration of a single 500-mg erythromycin stearate tablet.

Samuel Palmer and Romanticism

- Description: This introduction and ensuing essay are something in the nature of a personal confession. Deemed as such what I have written concerning Samuel Palmer has not, in any way, been written as an exercise, but rather for the purpose of self-edification. This I will elaborate upon while disclosing my motive for writing on Palmer. Palmer's works - when I first saw them - were something of a revelation. They seemed the alpha and omega of my own artistic endeavour. Perhaps the term which best describes the euphoria I felt is 1deja vu1, because although it describes a connectedness of sorts, the words have in their sound an exotic ring. There is in it an implied equivocation - and equivocality best describes my understanding of Samuel Palmer at that juncture. This euphoria I felt dimmed with the realisation that by purportedly claiming, as I was, Samuel Palmer's visionary landscapes as my goal I was treading on sacred ground; I'd arrived, as it were, in another's Paradise. The effects of this upon my own creativity were completely negative. Worse still, I lacked the necessary means to extricate myself from Palmer's paradisiacal visions. His influence was incapacitating and convoluting my own growth. It was obvious then that I had to be rid of Samuel Palmer. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Fine Art, 1985

Spenser's Colin Clout : an introductory study

- Description: From introduction: In the sixth book of The Faerie Qveene, the reader is presented with a vision of the Graces and their attendants dancing on Mount Acidale to the piping of a simple shepherd. Spenser identifies this favoured musician as Colin Clout and then goes on to pose a seemingly inconsequential rhetorical question. "Who knowes not Colin Cloute?” he asks. The note of confident pride which can be discerned in the query clearly reveals Spenser's peculiar interest in one of his most intriguing creations. It is almost impossible to read a representative selection of Spenser's poetical works without noticing the hauntingly frequent appearances of his "Southerne shepheardes boye". Colin appears or is named in no fewer than six of Spenser's poems.

The distribution of the Pied Starling, and southern African biogeography

- Description: The Pied Starling is restricted to South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland, but within this region it occupies a variety of habitats. Its modern distribution is certainly influenced by its association with man. However, a comparison with other vertebrate species, and with patterns of plant distribution, suggests that its geographical distribution has been determined primarily by its evolutionary history. A hypothesis for the origin of this species leads to several predictions concerning biogeography in southern Africa.

- Description: Gevers (1934) named the succession of quartzites, feld-spathic sandstones, massive conglomeratic arkoses and sedimentary breccias around Dordabis, the Dordabis Series. He considered this series to be of Nama age and the basic volcanics in the series to be post Nama, pre-Karoo eruptive diabase. Schalk (pers. comm.) has found the succession to be pre-Damara in age and possibly equivalent to the Sinclair Sequence. These ‘Dordabis Series’ rocks have since been incorrectly included into the Marienhof Formation of the Rehoboth Sequence on the 1980 1:1 000 000 Geological Map of SWA/Namibia. In this report, it is suggested that this succession be called the Dordabis Formation.

- Description: The Merensky cyclic unit of the Bushveld Complex represents the first products to crystallize after the influx and mixing of a large new batch of magma in the chamber. Excluding the Merensky pegmatoid, the Merensky cyclic unit grades upward from an orthopyroxenite at the base, through norite to anorthosite at the top of the sequence. It is followed by the very similar Bastard cyclic unit.

- Description: Unemployment has always been and still is a tricky problem for capitalists. On the one hand lots of unemployed workers make it easier for employers to keep wages low. But if there are too many unemployed workers then they might support moves for immediate and fundamental change in the society. Employers and the governments of capitalist countries have tried to solve this in different ways and at different times. But in most countries some income has been given to the unemployed for part of the time they have been without jobs. They have usually done this by providing some kind of benefits paid to the unemployed for a certain limited period of time. 1 lie fund from which these benefits are paid is usually controlled and administered by the government. However, there are many different ways that these benefits can lie financed. Before looking at what happened here in South Africa let us look at the problem of unemployment benefits generally in a capitalist state.

- Description: South African politics is experiencing rapid realignments. Old and emerging alliances face severe tests in the present climate of recession and revolt. This is as obvious in the realm of popular and trade union politics as it is in the efforts of the extreme right wing to rebuild a power base. It is too easy to see areas of intense social conflict like the Eastern Cape in television-like images of death and street clashes. It is also too easy to attribute control and authority over events to local organisations. This issue of Work In Progress begins with a careful discussion of events surrounding the March stayaway in Port Elizabeth, tracing the organisational conflicts that are now being so bitterly fought out. In the intense stress of that crucible, divisions between trade union, political and community organisations have been carried to an extreme. Whether resolution of these competing organisational interests is possible remains unclear. But it does seem clear that few organisations are in control of members and supporters in the Eastern Cape - and this may be the result of an over-emphasis on political mobilisation, with a consequent neglect of the structures of political organisation. This over-emphasis on mobilisation has sometimes led to a search for simple answers to complex issues. For example, the rising tide of media and government hysteria about effective foreign disinvestment should not conceal the need for South African organisations to evaluate critically the effects of such campaigns at home. As at least some trade unions have found, a progressive policy on disinvestment is more complicated than it at first seems. As the 'Courts' feature in this WIP indicates, there are more treason trials underway in South Africa at present than at any previous time in history. Precisely why the state has chosen this moment to charge 16 UDF leaders in a trial which, on the face of it, deals with activities that were public and above-ground, is not clear. But from other treason trials before the courts, it seems that the ANC's armed struggle continues despite the Nkomati Accord and other similar agreements with Southern African governments. Of particular interest are state allegations that the ANC is training cadres inside South Africa, and that its military campaign includes township supporters who have not undergone specialised training outside South Africa.
