- Description: The purpose of this study was to investigate the strategies schools use to maintain discipline in a low socio-economic area. Poor discipline in public schools has become a major concern following the abolition of corporal punishment by the National Department of Education. The educational authorities left educators in schools with no constructive alternatives to maintain discipline and alternative strategies had to be found and implemented. Data were collected be means of semi-structured interviews, from principals, educators and school governing body (SGB) members. Three neighbouring high schools in the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth in the Nelson Mandela Bay District of Education were used. A qualitative research approach was employed in the study. The findings supported the literature that was consulted in that there is a wide range of causes of disciplinary problems in schools. According to the findings, there is a lack of effective strategies to maintain discipline in schools but Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory is in line with the perceptions of the respondents in this study. This study opened a door for further research into effective strategies that are in line with the changing teaching environment in low socio-economic areas. The government should come on board to create an environment to promote the good life for educators and learners. The final outcome of this study focused on strategies that principals, educators and SGB members can use to maintain discipline in low socio-economic areas. These strategies can create an environment that is conducive for teaching and learning, especially in schools situated in low socio-economic areas. These include consistency, parental involvement, detention, suspension and the home environment and socio-economic circumstances. Learners must be disciplined and parents must be involved in the maintenance of discipline in schools situated in low socio-economic areas.

Teachers’ engagement with learners in inclusive foundation phase classrooms: a case study analysis

- Description: Since 2001, South African teachers have been attempting to practise inclusive education in classrooms in ordinary, public schools. Previous research has shown the many challenges South African teachers face in our current educational environment. Strong arguments, however, have been made for more research to be done on actual teacher engagement with learners in our ordinary, public school classrooms, and the extent to which classroom practices are inclusive (Engelbrecht, Nel, Nel & Tlale, 2015, p. 3). This study sought to do an in-depth critical analysis of three foundation phase teachers and their engagement with learners in their classrooms at an Eastern Cape school. The aim was to examine how inclusive education was being enacted by the teacher with learners in real classroom settings, with particular attention paid to ways in which learners experience barriers to learning. A micro-level analysis was conducted in a single unit case study and using a qualitative research approach in an interpretive paradigm. Questionnaires, observations, and semi-structured interviews were conducted in an attempt to gather in-depth data. It was heartening to observe the extent to which inclusive education and practices were being enacted at the school and in the classrooms, and instructive in providing examples of what can work in the South African context. Key findings of this study include the generation of a framework for analysing inclusive classroom practice at the micro level. Criteria were identified as indicators of inclusive education of learners including those experiencing barriers to learning in the classroom. This study builds on and extends what has been developed at the macro and micro level of inclusive education in schools and in the classroom. It found that a number of challenges remain for enabling the implementation of an inclusive education. At the macro level, these include the provision of clear directives for implementation of inclusive education by the appropriate authorities; the provision of well-structured professional teacher training and development programmes in inclusive classroom practices, as well as in barriers to learning and how to address them; and the provision of funding for school and classroom infrastructure and resources. At the micro level, these include the successful implementation by teachers of inclusive classroom practices and the provision of the necessary support for learners experiencing barriers to learning in their classrooms, including expert personnel, resources, and assistive devices.

Selected Namibian secondary school geography teachers’ pedagogical thinking and practices: the case of mapwork

- Description: Learner performance in mapwork in secondary school geography in Namibia has been consistently poor. Examiners’ reports provide detailed feedback on the difficulties learners demonstrate with little, if any, attention paid to teachers’ perceptions, experiences and pedagogical practices of mapwork. This qualitative study generated insights to understand selected geography teachers’ perceptions and pedagogical practices of mapwork. Data were generated through a questionnaire administered to thirty geography teachers in fifteen secondary schools in the Ohangwena Circuit in the Ohangwena Region of Namibia. The teachers’ responses were coded and analyzed and patterns and trends identified. Based on what emerged, a purposive sample of three teachers was chosen for in-depth interviews to probe their responses and to observe their classroom practices. The study draws on learner centred pedagogy (LCP), the official educational policy in Namibia, and Shulman’s perspectives of teachers’ content and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) (1986, 1987) to interpret what teachers say about the teaching of mapwork and how they teach it. The qualities of teachers’ PCK that support student learning in mapwork are not yet fully understood because there has been little research on teachers’ PCK for teaching mapwork and spatial thinking in geography classrooms (Jo & Bednarz, 2014). The study sheds light on the teachers’ qualifications and experience, their perceptions and attitudes towards the teaching of mapwork, their teaching strategies and the resources they use. The findings reveal that the teachers are conscientious but ill-equipped to teach mapwork. The study illuminated a disjuncture between the rhetoric and practice of learner centred pedagogy. There is evidence which suggests that the teachers’ knowledge of the curriculum is superficial and limited to content. Their practices are focused on teaching map skills and procedural knowledge with little, if any, attention given to spatial and map conceptual understanding and application of knowledge to solve problems. The study concludes that teachers’ map and spatial conceptual understanding and pedagogical content knowledge should be strengthened if the persistent problem of poor learner attainment is to be resolved. It provides insights that may be of value to Namibian teachers, teacher educators, curriculum policy developers and Senior Education Officers when addressing this problem.

- Description: Studies have shown that the practice of formative assessment is a challenge for many teachers in South Africa. Teachers are either entrenched in their old habits and methods of assessment, or they have not been adequately trained and supported to apply formative assessment in the instructional process. The aim of this research was to explore Physical Sciences teachers’ perceptions of formative assessment and the usefulness of Concept Cartoons as a formative assessment instrument to assist teachers in their practice of formative assessment. The perceptions of eight Grade 11 Physical Sciences teachers on formative assessment were sought before and after an intervention. During the intervention, the teachers were trained to use Concept Cartoons as a formative assessment instrument. The teachers’ perceptions were also sought after an implementation phase where they implemented Concept Cartoons as a formative assessment instrument in their own classrooms. The teachers were purposefully selected from six schools in the Port Elizabeth area. A qualitative case study approach, informed by a constructivist perspective, was applied in this study. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and the participants’ post-implementation written reflections. These data were analysed and presented in both narrative and tabular formats, supported by verbatim quotes from the participants. The conclusion that can be drawn from this study is that the use of Concept Cartoons as a formative assessment instrument had a substantially positive influence on the Physical Sciences teachers’ understanding and practice of formative assessment. The data also suggest that Concept Cartoons supported both learner- and teacher learning, thus functioning as an Educative Curriculum Material (ECM). Another finding in this study was that a relatively short intervention (i.e. a workshop) could make a difference in teachers’ learning and professional development. Support, however, is needed, particularly in the form of teaching resources or materials, so as to ensure the translation of knowledge into practice. Though the findings are presented within the context of the six sampled schools, and focussed on Grade 11, further research may determine these findings to be informative for other institutions within similar settings.

- Description: Exploring the use easily accessible resources to carry out the hands-on practical activities to science learning has become one of the significant aspects in the educational research, particularly in science education. It could be deduced from the literature that hands-on practical activities are useful, enjoyable and foster conceptual understanding. The National Curriculum for Basic Education advocates empowering teachers to be knowledgeable on use of hands-on practical activities to produce learners who are scientifically equipped. Yet, the performance of the learners in Science and Mathematics continues to be worrisome and has not been improving over years as reported in TIMSS reports. For instance, the Namibian Examiners’ Reports have repeatedly reported that Biology is one of the subjects that are poorly performed. Essentially, the section on osmosis has been identified as one of the scientific concepts that is problematic to learners. In my view, in order for learners to understand osmosis and its associated concepts, there is a need to strengthen the use of hands-on practical activities. It is recognized that this is something that is lacking in most rural Namibian schools especially where laboratory resources are scarce. It is against this background that the goal of this study was to explore how Grade 11 Biology teachers mediate learning of osmosis when using easily accessible resources. This study is underpinned by an interpretive paradigm. Within the interpretive paradigm, a qualitative case study approach was employed to obtain in-depth understanding on how Biology teachers mediate learning. This study was conducted in two conveniently selected secondary schools in the Oshikoto region, which I could easily access. It focused on four Grade 11 Biology teachers. Data were generated through semi-structured interviews, workshop discussions, lesson observation and stimulated interviews. Vygotsky’s (1978) socio-cultural theory was used as a lens to analyse my data. The findings from semi-structured interviews revealed that teachers demonstrated positive attitudes towards teaching of osmosis using easily accessible resources. However, challenges regarding inadequate materials that hinder the teaching and learning process were registered. Another finding of this study was that teachers used a variety of mediation tools such as prior and local knowledge, language and easily accessible resources to enhance learning. The study thus recommends that, if teachers are exposed to numerous professional development platforms that include the use of easily accessible resources might improve their pedagogical approaches.

- Description: South Africa is a semi-arid country with dysfunctional water management. The National Water Act encourages integrated water resource management and public participation in contributing to strategies for managing water within delineated areas. Various challenges hamper progress of integrated water resource management and meaningful participation by residents in catchments across the country. One of the challenges is the lack of knowledge about their role in water resource management. By viewing catchments as complex social-ecological systems, this case study investigates how to establish a learning-centred approach to catchment management forum (CMF) formation. The study addressed three sub-questions: What activity systems need to be prioritised for community participation in CMF formation? What existing learning can be identified within the activity systems? What are the sources for expansive social learning in and between the activity systems? The study draws on social learning theory, and on cultural historical activity theory as it offers a methodological approach to identifying a learning-centred approach to learning in a catchment context. Drawing on this theoretical framework, for research question 1, I identified five activity systems that are present in the study area, are partly representative of the people who live in the area, and are linked to land and water governance either through their positions as government employees within the sector, or the NLEIP in ways that influence communities’ lives and livelihoods. To address question 2, I ran learning-centred workshops and interviewed people who lived in the study area. Careful, respectful listening and participants’ use of home language created the safe space in which residents revealed that they know which water resources are important to protect and where breakdowns in communication happen. For question 3, I analysed the data from the workshops and interviews using a cultural historical activity theory framework to identify discursive manifestations of contradictions within and between activity systems which illuminate the potential for expansive social learning. This study recommends developing an understanding of the complex social-ecological context and prioritising co-learning and community participation in a learning-centred approach to catchment management forum formation. For this, there is need to develop in-depth insight into activity systems associated with water governance in local contexts. In this study I identified five of these activity systems, but the study points to a further range of activity systems that need to be considered for a learning-centred approach to be fully established. The study also found that communities are learning via engaging in the rehabilitation work, through engagements in workshops and within the municipal structures. Additionally, the study identified a number of contradictions that can provide sources of learning for taking an expansive learning approach further in CMF formation. Such an approach may provide the space to build bridges of trust between diverse knowledge systems, and has the potential to encourage sustainable co-operation in natural resource management.

Factors affecting grade 6 learners’ performance in Mathematics in the East London Education District

- Description: Mathematics is one of the most important subjects rooted in many fields of study but has also been one of the greatest challenges for learners in every country, most especially in the Republic of South Africa. There have been attempts to curb the challenges that have bedeviled the success of mathematics education by governments, the Department of Education and many other stakeholders who have not enjoyed positive results in mathematics in the district of East London. Therefore, this study examines factors affecting grade 6 learners’ performance in mathematics in selected schools within the East London education district. There were three hundred and forty-five (345) grade 6 learners and 12 teachers drawn through a parallel mixed methods sampling. Stratified random sampling was used to select participants for the quantitative strand while purposive sampling was used for selecting 60 learners and 12 teachers for the qualitative strand. The researcher used the mixed method research approach. The instruments used in collecting data were structured questionnaire and semi-structured interviews to elicit information from grade 6 learners and teachers. Information gathered from the learners and teachers included: biographical information, factors affecting teaching and learning of mathematics and suggestions. The quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics of percentage from the responses of learners. The quantitative analysis was done by using excel 2010 to formulate data into percentages and qualitatively, voice recordings from the respondents semi-structured interviews were reduced through thematic analysis. The findings of the study revealed that some of the qualified mathematics educators preferred to work in another profession. Quality of teaching and learning were less effective due to overcrowded classrooms, inadequate teaching and learning resources, poor monitoring of educators, some of the learners were not adequately motivated and many others. For performance in mathematics to improve in the primary schools in East London Education District, the study made some recommendations from the findings to the stakeholders in education such as the Department of Education, principals, the government, educators and learners. These recommendations might virtually assist in finding lasting solutions to grade 6 learners with mathematics challenges.

- Description: Widespread research exists about the challenges of getting boys to read and the gap in reading performance between boys and girls. Using a case study design within a qualitative approach, this study investigated whether engagement in a reading club could help boys in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to position themselves as readers. The literature review examined factors that hindered or advanced reading and the reading development of boys, particular in the Arab-Muslim context. Two theoretical frameworks underpin this study: Social Learning Theory which allowed for reading engagement of a social nature and Third Space Theory which enabled this engagement bringing together the in and out of school literacy practices. Grade 4 students at a school in Saudi Arabia were invited to partake in a 45 minute after-school reading club for 12 consecutive weeks. Participatory Visual Methodologies and a Reflective journal were used to generate data. Participants were asked to make drawings to express how they felt about reading in different languages and drawings to express how they felt about reading English books in a reading club. Drawings accompanied by verbal feedback along with the reflective journal notes were analysed using thematic analysis. Results from this study showed that a reading club serving as a socially supportive space does help boys in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to position themselves as readers.

Utilisation of Teaching and Learning Centres in State Universities in Zimbabwe: Implications for Teaching and Learning

- Description: The purpose of this research was to examine the utilisation of Teaching and Learning Centres (TLC) in state universities in Zimbabwe and the role they are playing in the improvement of teaching and learning in the institutions of higher learning. The social constructivist paradigm was found most appropriate for this study and was the lens by which reality was examined. The study used the qualitative approach and case study design to examine the issue under study. The purposive sampling technique was used to select participants who were rich informants for the study and these included Pro Vice Chancellors, Directors of Teaching and Learning Centres, Deans, lecturers and students. Data were collected through face to face interviews and focus group discussions that were triangulated by analysis of institutional records. The study was also guided by the theoretical lenses of the Social Practice Theory and the Concerns Based Adoption Model that provided the framework for the investigation. The study employed the Tech‘s qualitative model of data analysis that led to the findings being grouped into five major themes. The study established that Teaching and Learning Centres were not being fully utilised, thus were not helping to improve teaching and learning in a meaningful way in state universities in Zimbabwe. Possible reasons for this were the fact that the unit was not fully understood and different players at different levels in groups and as individuals had varied interpretations of what the TLCs were and what their role in the university was supposed to be. This lack of understanding and the absence of a shared understanding of what TLCs are and what they stand for, coupled with other factors such as the freeze on recruitment on staff in state universities and the assumed superiority of research over teaching for tenure and viii promotion, led to the poor positioning and poor staffing of TLCs leading to their poor utilisation in state universities. Each of the staff levels also had concerns about the utilisation of the TLC that made them reluctant to utilise it. The absence of top management support for the TLC, and the perceived superiority of research over teaching again led to poor utilisation of the unit. The study recommends the hosting of symposia between and among state universities for the dissemination of knowledge and information on what the TLC is and what its role should be. Internal consultations by individual state universities on the functions, staffing and positioning of the TLC and exposure for the TLC staff to established units to raise their knowledge and information levels and confidence is encouraged. Removal of the freeze on recruitment of staff so that TLCs can be better positioned and staffed and review of ZIMCHE guidelines to align teaching, research and university service for tenure and promotion would also help. Acquisition of cutting edge technology for teaching and learning and top management to listen to individual and group concerns and act on those that impede on TLC utilisation is a must.

- Description: This study explored the nature of biodiversity knowledge in the Senior Phase Natural Sciences curriculum in relation to international and national scientific documents. Significant biodiversity key features were identified from a review of these documents. These concepts were then explored in terms of how they had been presented and recontextualised in the Senior Phase Natural Sciences CAPS policy document and a selection of three commonly used textbooks for this subject in South Africa. Using Bernstein’s (1990) framework of the Pedagogic Device, the study traces how biodiversity knowledge was de-located from the scientific Field of Production (FOP) and relocated into the Official Recontextualisation Field (ORF) and Pedagogical Recontextualisation Field (PRF). In exploring the continuity, changes and discontinuities in the biodiversity content, as it has been recontextualised, the study utilised Bernstein’s concepts of selective appropriation and ideological transformation. The study is a qualitative case study that drew on document analysis and structured interviews to generate data. Data analysis for this study consisted of two phases. Phase One involved an analysis of biodiversity knowledge in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA, 2005) and Life: The State of South Africa’s Biodiversity (SANBI, 2013) which represented the FOP. This was in order to explore the nature of biodiversity knowledge in those documents. This knowledge was then compared to the Senior Phase Natural Sciences curriculum which represented the ORF and selection of textbooks representing the PRF. Phase Two sought to investigate the role players in the recontextualising fields and what roles did they play in the recontextualisation of biodiversity knowledge. This phase entailed an analysis of interviews. The findings showed that both the international document and the national document presented biodiversity knowledge in terms of their fundamental value to humans. In addition, these documents illustrated human-environmental interactions. They presented procedural knowledge that allow us to understand ecosystems and their services to human well-being. The documents also described how ecosystem services are in decline in many places around the world. The documents presented knowledge of threats to biodiversity such as habitat loss, invasive species, pollution, and overharvesting. They also included knowledge of conservation and sustainability which focused on preventing ongoing degradation and restoration and reversal of degradation of ecosystems. In comparing the ORF and the PRF this study showed that the CAPS policy document appears to present concepts foundational to understanding biodiversity rather than discussing biodiversity itself. The textbooks contextualise these foundational concepts and broaden them mostly through pictorial illustrations, as case studies and contextual examples. A recommendation from the research is that the official recontextualisation process should review opportunities to draw on international and national documents that present concepts and contemporary cases of biodiversity content knowledge to ensure that the complexities around biodiversity are presented in the curriculum. This study may contribute to the development and review of the Natural Sciences curriculum and environmental education in South Africa. The study also suggests areas of biodiversity knowledge that might be included as curriculum content in the future. It further suggests that curriculum developers consider including new environmental knowledge which deals with local, national and global needs and expectations.

- Description: The quality of teacher education seems to have become a crucial point of debate worldwide. However, teaching seems to be one of the careers without a recognised apprenticeship. Therefore, mentoring has been seen as an appropriate way for experienced teachers to guide, assist, coach and motivate teachers in their teaching capacity. Teaching capacity is described as having a broad content which can be related to quality teaching, teacher effectiveness and teacher behaviour in the classroom or in the school. The lens with which the study was viewed was through Lave and Wenger’s (1998) theory, Community of Practice (CoP). Community of Practice is defined as a process of social learning that occurs when people who have a common interest in a subject or area collaborate over an extended period of time, sharing ideas and strategies, determining solutions and building innovations. The study used mixed methods and concurrent triangulation design in sampling 60 participants for quantitative data and 6 participants for qualitative data. The unit of analysis were novice teachers who were randomly and purposively selected. Data gathering methods included questionnaires, classroom observations and document analysis. The focus was on the primary schools, Foundation Phase (FP) novice teachers. The findings revealed utilisation of different mentoring approaches such as one on one; Foundation Phase Team and school- based mentoring. Although the study reveals that the work of the mentor teachers and novice teachers has evolved to include Learning Teams to improve the teaching capacity of teachers; some mentoring approaches were less effective. The study suggests, therefore, that schoolbased and district-based mentoring programmes to be formally organised as part of developing novice teachers’ teaching capacity.

- Description: Training programmes are often detached from people’s context and experiences. It is critical that training programmes are carefully situated and relevant to the target group. This can be achieved through the use of relevant mediation tools. This study investigates how the use of mediation tools within a training programme on rainwater harvesting and conservation conducted by the Water Research Commission (WRC) funded the Green Village project impacted on Community Works Project (CWP) farmers’ practices. The study looks at how rural farmer learning occurs through the use of mediation tools in the context of the CWP farmers operating in Sinxaku village, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The learning process in this study was tracked through observing a three-day training workshop. I observed the Green Village facilitator’s choice and use of mediation tools to facilitate learning during the training. I looked at ways in which the Green Village facilitator engaged with the participants during the training and how they used different mediation tools to aid the learning process. I was interested in how the CWP farmers engaged with the mediation tools and how learning occurred from the training. I also looked out for changes in the CWP farmers’ farming practices following the completion of the training. The study constituted as an interpretative case study using Cultural Historical Activity (CHAT) theoretical tools. The study also drew on previous research on mediation and learning processes in the water management sector. Using interviews, observations and document analyses, the study found that rural farmers learn better by practising what they are being taught. They also learn from visuals and illustrations as these explain technical concepts in a clear and easy to understand manner. Factors that impact on rural farmer learning, particularly in the context of the CWP farmers operating in Sinxaku village include ecological factors, availability of farm equipment and the structuring of the training programme. The study found that in facilitating a training programme with rural farmers, more time should be given to practical activities at the demonstration site and that these practical activities should be interspersed with knowledge sharing in a workshop setup. The study concluded that special attention should be given to the choice of mediation tools used in training programmes involving rural farmers. Attention should also be given to contextual factors that can potentially impact on learning and practice of rainwater harvesting and conservation practices that would have been taught in a training programme.

The influence of Educational Levels of the Parent School Governing Body Component on their participation in school governance

- Description: School Governance is focused on the parent component, which is one of the components that make up School Governing Body (SGB). In South Africa, the legislation affords parents numerical majority representation. Strategic positions, such as chairperson and treasurer are assigned to a parent. This aims at affording parents an opportunity to influence school level decisions. However, the extent to which the parent component of SGBs participates meaningfully is consistently questioned, some researchers suspecting parents’ levels of education to negatively influence their quality of participation. Hence this study investigated the influence of Educational Levels of the SGB parent component on their school governance participation, especially in rural primary schools of Buffalo City Metro Education District. This study used Mixed Methods Research Design within Pragmatic Paradigm, using Arstein’s Ladder of Participation as Theoretical Framework. The researcher used a questionnaire as a tool to collect quantitative data and Key Informant Interview (KII) to collect qualitative data. Fourty two (42) parents serving as SGB members in the rural areas of the Buffalo City Metro Education District, ten (10) SGB parent members participated in the interview session. Quantitatively, there is a significant positive relationship between educational attainments of the parents in SGBs and their participation in the appointment of school staff (r = 0.61; p<0.05); there is also a significant positive relationship between educational attainments of the parents in SGBs and their participation in purchasing textbooks and materials for the school (r = 0.73; p<0.05). At face value the qualitative finding seems to agree with quantitative findings regarding the influence of educational level to their partcipation. It becomes moral complex as deeper analysis occured. For instance, some parent SGB members did not participate in roles such as recommending educators and non-teaching staff and the purchasing of school LTSM, not necessarily due to the educational levels. Instead it was because of their rejection of teacher attitude. Also, the parents seemed to reject English, the language used during SGB meetings. Even though the study did not explicitly link educational levels of parent SGB members with their participation. This study recommends that SASA unambiguously determines minimum educational levels, skills, knowledge for parent SGB membership. This study further recommends that SASA embraces explicitly Ubuntu principle in its definition of a parent, to include community members with appropriate minimum educational levels and skills, for participation.

The potential for concept cartoons to assist natural sciences teachers with developing scientific jargon for primary school learners

- Description: The study was undertaken to investigate whether a teaching tool Concept Cartoons may assist Intermediate Phase (IP) Natural Sciences teachers with the development and understanding of scientific jargon, when implemented in Natural Sciences investigations. As a novice Natural Sciences teacher it was important to find a teaching tool which would assist second language learners with scientific concepts, particularly focusing on science investigations. The focal aim was to search for a fun, captivating, educational resource that would cater for these learners’ barriers to science learning. This research falls within a constructivist worldview, and the research method employed was a case study. Data were collected through qualitative approach, via semi-structured interviews. A total of nine participating Intermediate Phase Natural Sciences teachers from the Port Elizabeth Northern Areas schools contributed towards the findings of this study. This study was an investigation undertaken to see whether a different teaching approach may encourage change. The findings of this study suggested that Concept Cartoons used in Natural Sciences investigations created an educational effect towards the learners understanding of science concepts. Intermediate Phase learners were introduced to Concept Cartoons to assist with their understanding of science terminology during practical investigations. The results of this investigation suggested that Concept Cartoons assisted English second-language learners with scientific jargon and served as an educative curriculum material for Intermediate Phase teachers. Furthermore Grade 4 findings suggested English home-language speakers struggled with scientific language, compared to their second-language peers who achieved greater results due to the amount of effort and determination they dedicated to translating these concepts. - Description: This research study investigated the perceptions of principals and teachers on the implementation of inclusive education in three primary schools in Amathole West Education District. The investigation took place in rural and in urban areas to fulfil the completion of the study. The people who participated in the study were three principals and six teachers from primary schools. The researcher used interpretivism paradigm for this study. A case study was also used to get closer to participants by visiting their workplace so that she could know their living experiences, thoughts and feelings about the implementation of IE in three primary schools in AWED. The study used qualitative approach. Data was collected using semi - structured interviews and document analysis so as to get rich information. Results of the study revealed that the implementation of Inclusive Education was not effective in primary schools in the AWED as it is expected by the DBE. For effective implementation of IE recommendations included the following: mainstream principals and teachers must be encouraged to read and understand the documents on implementation of IE; mainstream principals and teachers must be encouraged to further their studies and capacitate themselves especially in the aspects of inclusive education; DBSTs must have regular visits to mainstream schools to support teachers on monthly basis; follow - ups and monitoring must be done by district officers frequently to all mainstream schools; remedial classes must be introduced in mainstream schools so that learners can get enough time to be assisted on areas concerned; more workshops and in - service training must be organised to support teachers so that they could get more information about inclusive education.

- Description: There is ample evidence in the literature that gestures are important hand and bodily actions that play vital roles during interactions between learners and teachers in the mathematics classroom. These gestures enable both the teacher and the learner to visualise mathematical concepts and ideas. The aim of this Namibian interpretive case study, located in enactivist theory, was to analyse the types of gestures that three selected teachers at the junior primary phase (Grades 0–3) used in their teaching of mathematics. The study also interrogated the roles that these gestures played in the teaching process of the three teachers. As I intended to analyse the types of gestures the selected teachers used and understand their views and perceptions of the roles and functions their gestures played as visualisation tools in the teaching of mathematics, I observed ten lessons of each teacher and video recorded them. I then interviewed them (one-on-one stimulus-recall interviews) and interpreted the gestures they used and utterances they made about using these gestures. The types of gestures that the participating teachers used are classified according to McNeill‘s (1992) framework, namely pointing (deictic) gestures, iconic (illustrators) gestures, metaphoric gestures, beat (motor) gestures and symbolic (emblems) gestures. The study found that the participating teachers incorporated a variety of gestures into their lessons and used them strategically. According to the teachers, gestures made the lessons interesting and encouraged active participation of the learners in the lessons. The teachers also revealed that gestures assist in explaining mathematical concepts and thus affected the learners‘ understanding positively. This study strongly suggests that the usefulness and efficacy of employing gestures as visualisation tools in mathematics education should be strategically harnessed.

- Description: Geometry prepares learners by equipping them with the knowledge to use higher order thinking skills. The purpose of this research was to assess the difficulties in the teaching and learning of geometry in Grade 9 based on the van Hiele theory in a rural education district in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province. van Hiele levels complement each other and therefore, geometry educators need to have good pedagogical content knowledge and apply effective teaching and learning strategies to promote geometry learning. The study adopted the pragmatic paradigm and mixed method approach. Convenient sampling based on proximity to the researcher’s workplace was used to select three schools in Komga education circuit for data collection. The educators’ sample consisted of the Grade 9 mathematics educators from each of the three schools making up a total of 3 educators. The learners’ sample consisted of 27 Grade 9 learners,9 from each of the same three schools from where the educators were selected. Quantitative data were collected from educators and learners using different questionnaires. Qualitative data were collected using different in-depth interview schedules for educators and learners. All members of the sample were interviewed. Observations also were carried out in the classroom during teaching and learning of geometry in order to probe the use of strategies by educators. The quantitative data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis and tabulated. The qualitative data from interviews were thematically analysed and observation data were transcribed, analysed and tabulated. Final conclusions were drawn through triangulating the different data sets. Findings revealed the strengths and weakenesses of the strategies used by educators and the difficulties faced by the learners. Some of the prominent strengths for educators’ strategies were: ability to promote interactive learning and facilitating a conducive environment, enhancement of critical thinking and development of learners’ confidence through participation. Some of the prominent weakenesses of educators’ strategies were:lack of understanding on how to deal with slow learners and inability to change teaching methods to accommodate all learners, thus inhibiting inclusive education.The prominent strenghts for learners were eagerness to participate in all activities and exhibition of confidence in problem solving. The prominent weakenesses of learners were that the respondents struggled with the P a g e | ii geometrical vocabulary and language needed to express their understanding, deficiency in the understanding of geometric concepts and not having the required understanding of the characteristics of triangles. The study recommends that the geometry educators should plan activities for geometry lessons that will encourage the development of geometric vocabulary among their learners. Geometry educators also need to to include questions in their assessments that test conceptual understanding. In-service workshops should be conducted to equip the educators about how to deal with inclusive education.

- Description: The performance of learners in Agricultural Science at secondary schools in the Omaheke region of Namibia is worrisome. For some years performance in the subject has been below the national average, even though the region is known for its agricultural activities. My assumption is that this could be compounded by the fact that even though the Namibian curriculum encourages teachers to integrate local or indigenous knowledge (IK) in their lessons, it is not clear how this should be executed. It is against this background that this study set out to explore opportunities for integrating indigenous animal husbandry knowledge and practices into the animal husbandry section of Namibian Grade 10 Agricultural Science lessons. This was a qualitative case study underpinned by the interpretive paradigm. The study first focused on finding out what practices and knowledge might be integrated into animal husbandry within Grade 10 Agricultural Science. Secondly, it aimed at finding strategies for integrating indigenous knowledge into Grade 10 Agricultural Science. Thirdly, using my experience of co-developing model lessons with two Grade 10 Agricultural Science teachers, it sought to identify what assistance teachers need to integrate IK. The fourth goal was to observe the lessons taught in order to find out how the two teachers mediated the lessons featuring IK. Data were collected using interviews, workshop discussions, observations (videotaped lessons) and reflections. The data were validated through member checking and triangulation via various techniques. I used Vygotsky’s (1978) sociocultural theory and Wenger’s (1998) community of practice as a composite lens to analyse my data. The findings showed that there is indigenous knowledge in animal husbandry of disease prevention and treatment, the feeding of livestock, castration, de-horning and parasite control. Strategies to integrate IK included inviting or visiting parents or farmers, using the learners’ mother tongue and exploiting local resources. It emerged that teachers need help with teaching strategies, the development of worksheets, lesson planning and the use of technology. The mediation of the lessons included use of the chalkboard and a data projector, worksheets, the teacher assisting learners, and learners assisting one another. The study recommends that teachers integrate IK into their lessons to contextualize learning, increase learners’ participation in class and enhance their understanding of science. It also recommends that curriculum developers make it clear how IK should be integrated and assessed. The study further recommends that institutions of higher education should train teachers on how to integrate IK in the curriculum.

- Description: In South Africa, most of our children learn in a language other than their home language. Language and Literacy is thus a major concern for many of them who are trying to make meaning of literature. This study was part of a continuing community dialogic engagement project, between the university and a rural high school in Paterson, a rural settlement in the Eastern Cape. The selected school – ‘Sandhill High’ has English as the Language of Teaching and Learning (LOLT) but has predominantly isiXhosa- and a smaller number of Afrikaans home language learners. The aim of this research was to explore how English second language learners, in a rural high school engage with and experience a dialogic approach to writing as a social practice. This was firstly done by, investigating in which ways dialogic writing might encourage participation in literacy as a social practice. Secondly, exploring in which ways the choices of language might engage learners in responding to text. A qualitative, participatory case study was used to interpret the phenomena. To adequately address the research questions, this study was underpinned by Bakhtin’s theory on Dialogism, viewed through the lens of a third space. As this study was about writing, theories of literacies and second language writing were also reviewed. Dialogic journals offer reflective spaces for learners to record their thinking and because reading and writing complement each other, both need ongoing practice. The data was gathered using the dialogic journals and focus group discussions. Data was analysed in a process of thematic narrative analysis. Participation was voluntary and 16, grade 10 learners of the school participated in the study. The significance of this study was that it enabled learners to engage with texts using their choice of language to participate in dialogic journal writing as a social practice.

- Description: This study investigated the factors affecting the learners’ reading culture in English First Additional Language at grade 5 level in the Cookhouse and Somerset area. The sample consisted of 3 teachers, 3 principals, 18 learners and 3 SGB chairpersons from three different schools. The study focused on three primary schools in the Blue Crane District, which were selected through a purposive sampling technique. Qualitative research was chosen as the research method with a case study as the research design. Data collection instruments consisted of unstandardized in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and documents. Interviews were conducted with the teachers, principals and the chairpersons of the respective schools. The focus group discussions were conducted with learners. In this study, the researcher has analysed data systematically whereby he built through recording procedures during interviews and focus group discussions. The findings highlighted factors, which cause learners’ reading problems. The factors include various physical factors, emotional factors, and little attention to reading skills, lack of motivation, insufficient reading time and material. Educators were of the view that repeated curriculum changes within a short period of time without proper training of educators has an effect on learners’ reading performance. The study revealed that reading is adversely affected by the poor learning conditions in which learners find themselves in because there was a strong relationship between socio-economic factors and reading ability. On that account, the implication is that reading will not improve. The study recommends that the Department of Education pay more attention to pre-service and in-service training of educators so that educators are more knowledgeable in all reading components.
