- Description: There was, once upon a time a baboon who was walking in amongst the hills and found plenty of fruit. Matamba ('Kaffir oranges', strychnos spinosa). He ate a great many and went to sleep on the path, full to the brim. Presently an old woman who was collecting firewood came along and said "My child, why are you sleeping on the path like this?" He did not reply. So she said, "Wake up, the sun is setting." He said, "I don't want to, I am full." Then he said "Come here and listen to my song". So she came near and the baboon sang his song. "The sun is setting, wake up, wake up! Ha-hey-ha, old woman! She makes me laugh. I have discovered this hill here. Which is full of fruit, so I go here and there, eating my fill and laughing." Now when he had finished singing, he woke up, got up and followed the old woman all the way to her home. Son story.

- Description: "Uhimila was so fine a dancer that even Kihimyali would bow down and clap his hands." All African tribes seem to idolize their good dances. The cutting of cicatrices on the face is accompanied by songs such as these, and by festivities and dancing. There is a local breed of fowls which have no feathers on their necks and very red skin. The song refers to a certain diviner who used to smear his face and neck with red earth. The people of the village can be heard chatting and laughing during the song, and a bird can be heard in the background of the second song. Ucheyeki song for cutting cicatrices.

- Description: Herdman's tune from the highlands on the eastern border of the Congo where the hills run alongside the great western rift opposite the Ruwenzori mountains. This remarkable player was somewhat 'simple' herdsman. He plays his flute all day to his cattle and has developed, they say, a distinct style of his own. He is inclined to hum while he plays and his voiced notes can be heard forming a celeste with those of the flute. The player was given a 'Highly commended' prize in the 1952 Osborn Awards for the best African musicians of the year. The first four tunes were copied frim discs in the Reference Library as the original tapes were not available. Nyamulera flute, 4 holed, notched.

- Description: The girl playing this mouth bow whistles out of the side of her mouth as well as resonating the notes in the usual manner. She used the open string and a stopped note, stopping it with her thumbnail and first finger. The use of this indigenious instrument and its style of music explains the ease with which Gcaleka people take to the small concertina. The harmonies produced in the mouth being on the true harmonic series makes the transition to the concertina a simple matter for simple tunes. Notes of the bow, 292 and 260. Mtshotsho dance for boys and girls with Ikinki mouth resonated musical bow.
