They bandy small boy's ruderies at each other, hence the laughter from the others. The recording is somewhat marred by tape echo.

- Description: There were once two brothers who were both herdboys. The elder incited the younger to fight him. While they were fighting the elder brother tired and the younger brother beat him. So the elder brother ran away leaving the younger brother to bring home the cattle. The younger brother thought that their fight was over, but at midnight when he was already in bed he heard a knock at the door and found his older brother standing there. "What do you want?" "I would like to fight again" he replied. So they set to. Again the elder brother was defeated and during the fight they broke the windows and furniture. Early in the morning the elder brother returned and found the younger brother eating mealies, and the younger brother never suspected that the elder brother was eager to fight the third time. He offered the elder brother some mealies but he said he was still dissatisfied with the result of the fight. So they fought again a third time and again and again for six matches, until the younger brother decided he must leave the villgae for good. So he left his home and that was the end of the story. - Description: The Malipenga dance of the Tonga and other tribes of north central Nyasaland was originated, they say, in military drill which it imitates. With African genius for converting what is normally a drudgery into a game, these Tonga made barrack square drilling into a form of enjoyable dance, with opportunities for all to shine in the grace of their movements. The instruments of the military band have been substituted by singing horns- with mirliton buzzers- so that anyone who can sing a Tonga tune can equally well participate in the Malipenga band. Short gourds or horns are used for the higher pitched voices and longer for the basses. 2nd and 3rd Movement of the Malipenga dance with bass drum (mine type), pegged, closed, wooden beaters and 1 small cylindrical drum, pegged, closed and wooden beaters.

- Description: The low roaring sound towards the end is produced by the lips and cheeks of the women and is not produced in the throat, (as the Xhosa do). The women usually used a gourd when making this sound, holding their mouths into the orifice of the gourd. They appear to blow through their pursed lips first on one side and then on the other, alternately. No gourds were used on this occasion. This item which was recorded at the Wankie Colliery several hundred miles from the district of origin of the performers, appears to have been influenced by foreign mission techniques, especially in the correct iambic stress at the end of lines.
