  • Description: The old singer is a great favourite in the district, the local Zande enjoying his songs of historical flavour. "Zilo went to the Chief to plead forgiveness for his son. The Chief forgave him on condition that he troubled the people no more and became the Chief's servant." The membrane of the harp is made of the ear of an elephant, laced onto the instrument. The Zande have a wild military past and ruled a large tract of country along both sides of the Congo-Sudan border. Topical song with vertical, angular, kundi harp, 5 strings and hand clapping.

  • Description: The song is sung partly in Sena and partly in Mangyanja. The drummer sitting on the ground with his drum on his thighs moves the drum on and off his chest by raising and lowering the tips of his feet with heels on the ground. This has the necessary tonal effect when moving the drum half an inch or so only. The singer, George Zongoloti is singing about his troubles. If he wants to go to Southern Rhodesia he has to come Chief Tingami for a pass. If he wants to fish, another pass. Even to make a canoe, he needs a pass. Now he is going back to Portuguese territory over the border because there you can do what you like without a single pass, just what you like! Topical song with Nthikwi drum.

  • Description: This praise, which both begins and ends with song, are frequently recited by men at parties. The subject of their adulation may be their host, their cattle or any subject gratifying their senses. Adulation of elders is part of the sycophantic social system common to many tribes and especially cattle owners. The practise of interspersing spoken praises between song is also found among the Sotho of Basutoland. The word Engabo means literally a brave man and these praises were originally intended to praise fighting men. Nowadays woth no fighting to be done the praises have been extended to any gratification and particularly of the 'Pombe' banana beer. Engabo praise, with conical drum. laced, single, played with hands and clapping.

The other (mouth) end was reduced to lenght until the finger hole notes sounded correct. Flute tunes with Umstshingozi end blown transverse flute.

They are an active military tribe with great influence and power in the whole of this area, their young men being noted for their bravery. This tune set to a topical song is in the common Zande dance measure and a Zande audience hearing it would be likely to start their attractive dance action in spite of the accompanying instrument being a Likembe and not a xylophone which is commonly used for dancing on account of its greater volume of sound.
