- Description: This study presents the synthesis of cobalt (II) tetra-(3-carboxyphenoxy) phthalocyanine (CoTCPhOPc) through the cyclotetramerization of 4-(3-carboxyphe-noxy)phthalonitrile and its full characterization using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy, elemental analysis and mass spectrometry. The CoTCPhOPc was then immobilized onto phenylethylamino (PEA) pre-grafted gold electrode surface, Au-PEA using amide coupling reaction through a reaction with NHS and DCC to obtain Au-PEA-CoTCPhOPc. This yielded pH sensitive thin films due to the terminal carboxylic acid (–COOH) functional groups. Electrochemical and surface characterization was conducted to confirm the modification of the bare Au with PEA thin film (Au-PEA) and amide coupling of CoTCPhOPc (Au-PEA-CoTCPhOPc). The Au-PEA-CoTCPhOPc electrode was shown to possess pH selective properties towards negatively charged [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- and positively charged [Ru(NH3)6]2+/3+ redox probes. Au-PEA-CoTCPhOPc electrode surface enabled the detection of catecholamine neurotransmitters (dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine) and the screening off of ascorbic acid by means of pH sensitive functional groups. Bare Au and Au-PEA electrodes exhibited electro-oxidation and electroreduction of catecholamine neuro-transmitters and ascorbic acid at higher potentials compared to Au-PEA-CoTCPhOPc. There was no electro-oxidation or electroreduction of ascorbic acid at Au-PEA-CoTCPhOPc. For Au-PEA-CoTCPhOPc, excellent electrocatalytic oxidation with the limit of detection (LoD) determined using 3σ was found to be 1.32 (0.95), 2.11 (1.78) and 3.08 μM for electro-oxidation and electroreduction (in brackets) of dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine respectively. The limit of quantification (LoQ) was determined using 10σ and found to be 4.41 (3.17), 7.02 (5.93) and 10.3 μM electro-oxidation and electroreduction (in brackets) for dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine respectively. The Au-PEA-CoTCPhOPc thin film was shown to screen off ascorbic acid as no electrocatalytic oxidation was observed for up to 100.0 μM concentration. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry, 2021

- Description: The potential toxicity of seven different types of quantum dots without shell (L-cysteine-CdTe, TGA-CdTe, MPA-CdTe, TGA-CdSe) and with the shell (GSH-CdSe@ZnS, GSH-CdTe@ZnS,) with different capping agents were evaluated. The growth inhibitory effects of the various quantum dots on human pancreatic BON cancerous cells were determined. The least cytotoxic of the various quantum dots synthesized and the one displaying the lowest growth inhibitory potential and no embryotoxicity was determined to be the GSH-CdSe@ZnS quantum dots. The GSH-CdSe@ZnS quantum dots were then conjugated to gallium, aluminium and indium octacarboxy phthalocyanine and the photophysical behaviour of the conjugates studied for potential use in photodynamic therapy and imaging applications. The sizes, morphology, thermal stability and confirmation of successful conjugation was determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. The study was extended by conjugating amino functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄) to indium octacarboxy phthalocyanine to study the photophysical behaviour of the conjugate as a potential bi-functional anti-cancer agent (hyperthermia and photodynamic therapy applications). A three-in-one multifunctional nanocomposite comprising of the quantum dots, magnetic nanoparticles and indium octacarboxy phthalocyanine was developed with the aim of developing a multifunctional composite that is able detect, monitor and treat cancer. All conjugates showed improved and enhanced photophysical behaviour. Finally, GSH-CdSe@ZnS conjugated to aluminium octacarboxy phthalocyanine was applied in human pancreatic carcinoid BON cells. The conjugates induced cell death dose-dependently.

- Description: This work presents the syntheses, photophysical and photochemical characterization of arylthio zinc phthalocyanines and their gold nanoparticle conjugates. Spectroscopic and microscopic studies confirmed the formation of the phthalocyanine-gold nanoparticle conjugates which exhibited enhanced photophysicochemical properties in comparison to the phthalocyanines. The studies showed that the presence of gold nanoparticles significantly lowered fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes. However, this interaction did not restrict the formation of excited singlet and triplet states and hence the formation of singlet oxygen required for photocatalysis. The conjugates showed significantly higher singlet oxygen quantum yields and therefore enhanced photocatalytic activity compared to the phthalocyanines. The zinc phthalocyanines and their gold nanoparticle conjugates were successfully incorporated into electrospun polymer fibers. Spectral characteristics of the functionalized electrospun fibers indicated that the phthalocyanines and phthalocyanine-gold nanoparticle conjugates were bound and their integrity was maintained within the polymeric fiber matrices. The photophysical and photochemical properties of the complexes were equally maintained within the electrospun fibers. The functionalized fibers were applied for the photoconversion of 4-chlorophenol and Orange G as model organic pollutants. , Microsoft Word 2010 , Adobe Acrobat 9.53 Paper Capture Plug-in

- Description: Indium (III) octacarboxyl phthalocyanine (ClInOCPc) alone and when conjugated to magnetic nanoparticles (MNP-ClInOCPc), 2(3),9(10),16(17),23(24)-octapyridylsulfanyl phthalocyaninato chloroindium (III) (ClInOPyPc) and its quaternized derivative 2(3),9(10),16(17),23(24)-octamethylpyridylsulfanyl phthalocyaninato chloroindium (III) (ClInOMePyPc) were synthesized. All Pcs were tested for both photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) of an unknown water sample and photo-degradation of methyl red (MR). The singlet quantum yield (ΦΔ) for the ClInOCPc and MNP-ClInOCPc in PAN polymer fibers were 0.36 and 0.20 respectively using ADMA as a quencher in water. The photo-inactivation of bacteria in a water sample with unknown microbes was tested, with the MNP-ClInOCPc inactivating 90.6 % of the microbes and the ClInOCPc with 84.8 %. When embedded to the polymer, there was 48% bacterial clearance for ClInOCPc and 64% clearance for the MNP-ClInOCPc. The rate of degradation of MR increased with decrease of the MR concentration, with the MNP-ClInOCPc having the fastest rate. For ClInOPyPc and ClInOMePyPc, the singlet quantum yields were 0.46 and 0.33 in dimethylformamide (DMF), respectively. The PACT activity of ClInOMePyPc (containing 8 positive charges) was compared to those of 9(10),16(17),23(24)-tri-N-methyl-4-pyridylsulfanyl-2(3)-(4-aminophenoxy) phthalocyaninato chloro indium (III) triiodide (1) (containing 3 positive charges) and 2-[4-(N-methylpyridyloxy) phthalocyaninato] chloroindium (III) iodide (2) (containing 4 positive charges). When comparing ClInOMePyPc, 1 and 2, the largest log reduction for E. coli were obtained for complex 2 containing four positive charges hence showing it is not always the charge that determines the PACT activity, but the bridging atom in the phthalocyanine plays a role.

- Description: Metallophthalocyanine complexes containing non-transition metals are very useful as sensitizers for photodynamic therapy, a cure for cancer that is based on visible light activation of tumour localized photo sensitizers. Excited sensitizers generate singlet oxygen as the main hyperactive species that destroy the tumour. Water soluble sensitizers are sought after for the convenience of delivery into the body. Thus, phthalocyanine (pc), tetrapyridinoporphyrazines (tppa) and tetramethyltetrapyridinoporphyrazines (tmtppa) with non-transition central metal atoms of Ge, Si, Sn and Zn were studied. First was the synthesis of these complexes, followed by their characterisation. The characterisation involved the use of ultraviolet and visible absorption spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, electrochemical properties and elemental analysis. Photochemical properties of the complexes were then investigated. Photolysis of these macrocycles showed two processes; -reduction of the dye and photobleaching, which leads to the disintegration of the conjugated chromophore structure of the dye. Photobleaching is the reductive quenching of the excited state of the sensitizers. The intensity of the quenching decreased progressively from tmtppa, tppa to pc metal complexes with photobleaching quantum yields, 6.6 x 10.5⁻¹, 1.8 x 10.5⁻¹ and 5.4 x 10⁻⁶ for Zntmtppa, Zntppa and Znpc, respectively. Efficiency of singlet oxygen sensitization is solvent dependent with very different values obtained for the same compound in different solvents, for example, 0.25 and 0.38 were observed as singlet oxygen quantum yields for Gepc complex in DMSO and DMF respectively. In DMSO the efficiency of ¹O₂ generation decrease considerably from pc to tppa and finally tmtppa. In water Getmtppa exhibits much higher singlet oxygen quantum yield, hence promising to be effective as a sensitizer for photodynamic therapy.

- Description: This thesis presents work based on the interactions of water soluble caboxylated zinc phthalocyanines (Pcs) and coreshell quantum dots (QDs). The Pcs are ZnPc(COOH)₈ and ZnPc(COOH)₄ and coreshell QDs are CdTe@ZnS-GSH. GSH = L-glutathione. Characterization and photophysical studies of conjugates were carried out. The approach of coordinating Pcs to QDs was achieved using an organic cross linker, N-N’-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) at pH 10 at room temperature. Employing atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, the formation of the conjugates was confirmed. Upon conjugation with Pc derivatives, the fluorescence quantum yield of CdTe@ZnS-GSH decreased due to energy transfer from the QDs to the Pc. The average fluorescence lifetime of the CdTe@ZnS-GSH QD also decreased upon conjugation. The föster resonance energy transfer (FRET) behaviour of CdTe@ZnS-GSH-ZnPc(COOH)₄ conjugates was compared to that of CdTe@ZnS-GSH-ZnPc(COOH)₈. Higher FRET efficiencies were observed for CdTe@ZnS-GSH-ZnPc(COOH)₄-mixed or CdTe@ZnS-GSH-ZnPc(COOH)₄-linked compared to the corresponding CdTe@ZnS-GSH-ZnPc(COOH)₈-mixed or CdTe@ZnS-GSH-ZnPc(COOH)₈-linked. Triplet quantum yield (ΦT) and lifetime (ΤT) of ZnPc(COOH)₈ were found to increase in the presence of coreshell QDs. Though the singlet quantum yield (ΦΔ) value of ZnPc(COOH)8 was lower than ΦT , there was a slight upsurge in the ΦT in the presence of QDs. , Microsoft Word 2010 , Adobe Acrobat 9.53 Paper Capture Plug-in

- Description: A number of metallophthalocyanines (MPcs) and metal-free phthalocyanines (H₂Pcs) have been synthesized and characterized using various characterization tools such as ¹H-NMR, TOF mass spectrometry, FT-IR, UV-visible spectrophotometry and CHNS elemental analysis. Some of the MPcs were covalently linked to nanomaterials such as silica nanoparticles (SiNPs), single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) and quantum dots (QDs), or embedded in polymer thin-films using poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as the polymer sources. The phthalocyanine-nanomaterial composites (Pc-NMCs) were characterized with FT-IR, UV-visible spectrophotometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetry analysis and X-ray diffractometry. The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties (using the open-aperture Z-scan technique) of the MPcs and the Pc-NMCs were investigated. In general, most of the investigated MPcs showed good optical limiting behaviors, except for a few, like the non-peripherally-substituted 2-pyridyloxy phthalocyanines, which showed inhibited NLO response as a result of the ring-strain effects. The absence of a metal center was found to greatly reduce the inherent high nonlinearities expected of some of the phthalocyanine complexes. The octaphenoxy derivatives (61a – 61e) were found to exhibit reverse saturable absorption (RSA) that depends on the singlet-singlet transitions, hence making them less reliable optical limiters. The optical limiting properties of the MPcs were improved in the presence of nanomaterials such as the QDs, MNPs and SWCNTs, with MPc-QDs showing the best optical limiting behavior of the three. SiNPs have no significant effect on the optical limiting behavior of the MPcs. The optical limiting properties of the MPcs were greatly enhanced in the presence of PMMA or PAA polymers. The PAA polymer showed better optical limiting behavior compared to PMMA

- Description: This work reports on the synthesis, characterization and the physicochemical properties of novel unsymmetrically substituted zinc phthalocyanines: namely tris{11,19, 27-(1,2- diethylaminoethylthiol)-2-(captopril) phthalocyanine Zn ((ZnMCapPc (1.5)), hexakis{8,11,16,19,42,27-(octylthio)-1-(4-phenoxycarboxy) phthalocyanine} Zn (ZnMPCPc(1.7)) and Tris {11, 19, 27-(1,2-diethylaminoethylthiol)-1,2(caffeic acid) phthalocyanine} Zn ((ZnMCafPc (1.3)). Symmetrically substituted counterparts (tetrakis(diethylamino)zinc phthalocyaninato (3.8), octakis(octylthio)zinc phthalocyaninato (3.9) and tetrakis (carboxyphenoxy)zinc phthalocyaninato (3.10) complexes) were also synthesized for comparison of the photophysicochemical properties and to investigate the effect of the substituents on the low symmetry Pcs. The complexes were successfully characterized by IR, NMR, mass spectral and elemental analyses. All the complexes showed the ability to produce singlet oxygen, while the highest triplet quantum yields were obtained for 1.7, 1.5 and 3.9 (0.80, 0.65 and 0.62 respectively and the lowest were obtained for 1.3 and 3.10 (0.57 and 0.47 respectively). High triplet lifetimes (109-286 μs) were also obtained for all complexes, with 1.7 being the highest (286 μs) which also corresponds to its triplet and singlet quantum yields (0.80 and 0.77 respectively). The photosensitizing properties of low symmetry derivatives, ZnMCapPc and ZnMCafPc were investigated by conjugating glutathione (GSH) capped silver nanoparticles (AgNP). The formation of the amide bond was confirmed by IR and UV-Vis spectroscopies. The photophysicochemical behaviour of the novel phthalocyanine-GSH-AgNP conjugates and the simple mixture of the Ag NPs with low the symmetry phthalocyanines were investigated. It was observed that upon conjugation of the phthalocyanines to the GSH-AgNPs, a blue shift in the Q band was induced. The triplet lifetimes and quantum yields improved upon conjugation as compared to the phthalocyanines (Pc) alone. Complex 1.5 triplet lifetimes increased from 109 to 148 and triplet quantum yield from 0.65 to 0.86 upon conjugation. Fluorescence lifetimes and quantum yields decreased for the conjugates compared to the phthalocyanines alone, due to the quenching caused by the Ag NPs. The antimicrobial activity of the zinc phthalocyanines (complexes 1.3 and 1.5) and their conjugates against Escherichia coli was investigated. Only 1.3 and 1.5 complexes were investigated because of the availability of the sample. In general phthalocyanines showed increase in antibacterial activity with the increase in phthalocyanines concentration in the presence and absence of light. The Pc complexes and their Ag NP conjugates showed an increase in antibacterial activity, due to the synergistic effect afforded by Ag NP and Pcs. Improved antibacterial properties were obtained upon irradiation. 1.5-AgNPs had the highest antibacterial activity compared to 1.3-AgNPs conjugate; these results are in agreement with the photophysical behaviour. This work demonstrates improved photophysicochemical properties of low symm

- Description: This thesis reports on the syntheses and characterizationof symmetrical (charged and neutral), asymmetrical (neutral) metallophthalocyanines (MPcs) and subphthalocyanines (SubPcs). The charged and neutral Pcs were physically doped onto silica nanoparticles (SiNPs). The asymmetrical MPc was also chemically linked to SiNPs. Spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were used to confirm the formation of SiNPs-MPc conjugates. The photophysics and photochemistry of the MPcs were assessed when alone and in conjugates (with SiNPs). The studies showed no significant changes in fluorescence quantum yields (ϕF) and fluorescence lifetimes (ϕF) of MPcs following doping except for 2-SiNPs (2 = Zn tetraaminophenoxyphthalocyanines) and 6-SiNPs (doped) (6 = Zn tris[(4-(pyridine-4-ylthio)2-thio-4-methylthiazol-5yl) acetic acid phthalocyanine) where there was a decrease in the ϕF value. Also for 1-SiNPs (1 = unsubstituted ZnPc) there was an elongation in τF which could be due to the protection offered by SiNPs. Both charged/neutral MPcs displayed high triplet quantum yields (ϕT) and singlet quantum yields (ϕΔ) following doping except for 2-SiNPs where there was a decrease in the latter. For 1-SiNPs there was an increase in ϕT but a decrease inϕΔ .There wasa decrease in ϕT and an increase in ϕΔfor4-SiNPs (4 = Zn tetrasulfophenoxyphthalocyanine), the decrease in ϕT could be due to the orientation of theMPc in SiNPs. An increase in both ϕT and ϕΔ for 6-SiNPs (linked) compared to 6-SiNPs (doped) was observed. Complex 5 (5 = Zn tetra-kis-(dodecylmercapto) phthalocyanine) showed a low ϕΔ value.

- Description: The synthesis, photophysicochemcial properties, in vitro dark toxicity and photodynamic therapy (PDT) activities of different derivatives of zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) conjugates with biomolecules (folic acid, bovine serum albumin (BSA), ascorbic acid, uridine or spermine) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are presented in this work. The fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF) (Subscript F) of the ZnPc derivatives or ZnPc-biomolecule conjugates remained relatively the same as compared to the precursor Pcs. Slight increases were observed in the ΦF (Subscript F) values of conjugates containing substituents such as pyrene, folic acid or BSA with intrinsic fluorescence properties. The triplet quantum yield (ΦT ) (Subscript T) values for some ZnPc conjugates increases compared to the precursor ZnPcs due to extended π conjugation (for the conjugate with pyrene) and the presence of phenyl ring that support spin-orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing to triplet state. While some conjugates showed decreases in the ΦT (Subscript T) values compared to precursor ZnPcs due to the presence of substituents that could quench photo-excited state properties. The singlet oxygen quantum yield (ΦΔ ) values follow the trends of the triplet quantum yield values. The conjugates containing BSA also show increases in the ΦΔ values without corresponding increases in ΦT (Subscript T) values due to the ability of BSA to generate free radicals including singlet oxygen. The presence of SWCNTs decreases the photophysicochemcial properties of some ZnPc-SWCNT conjugates compared to the precursor ZnPcs due to photo-induced electron transfer from an excited Pc complex (electron donor) to SWCNTs (electron acceptor). However, increases were observed in some ZnPc-SWCNT conjugates as a result of fast charge recombination process due to highly short-lived radical ion pair produced. These phenomena affected the ΦF (Suscript F) values, ΦT (Suscript T) values, and the ΦΔ values. Increases or decreases in ΦT (Suscript T) values resulted in corresponding increases or decreases in ΦΔ values

- Description: One form of surface modification was primarily investigated in this work on glassy carbon electrodes. The form of modification is comprised of a series of steps in which electrografting is first applied to the glassy carbon surface, which is then followed up with click chemistry to ultimately immobilise a phthalocyanine onto the surface. The modified glassy carbon electrodes and surfaces were characterised with a combination of scanning electrochemical microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and various electrochemical methods. In this work, three alkyne substituted phthalocyanines were used. Two novel phthalocyanines, with nickel and cobalt metal centres, were studied alongside a manganese phthalocyanine reported in literature. Each of the three phthalocyanines was modified at the peripheral position with a 1-hexyne group, via a glycosidic bond, yielding the terminal alkyne groups that were used for subsequent click reactions. In situ diazotisation was used to graft 4-azidoaniline groups to the surface of the glassy carbon electrode. The azide bearing 4- azidoaniline groups were thus used to anchor the tetra substituted phthalocyanines to the surface of the electrodes. This method yielded successful modification of the electrodes and lead to their application in sensing studies. The modified electrodes were primarily used to catalyse the common agricultural oxidising agent hydrazine.

- Description: The need for low-cost, efficient and simple diagnostic tools has led to more research going into this subject, with the aim of making such medical devices more accessible where they are needed. This has led to more researchers developing point-of-care devices for this purpose worldwide, by sensor fabrication. This thesis focuses on electrochemical sensor development for the early diagnosis of prostate cancer. It is common knowledge that prostate cancer is one of the most prevalent carcinomas that have claimed lives due to late diagnosis where even the most invasive treatments have failed. For this reason, development of early detection devices that can even be used in the comfort of home is necessary and quite crucial. Electrochemical sensors have gained much attention due to their ease of fabrication, cost effectiveness, simplicity, ease of use and high efficiency. Using nanocomposites as modifiers has also become popular as they provide greater stability and improve detection limits when used together with biomolecules. With that said, the work reported herein has combined nanocomposites of graphenebased quantum dots, gold nanoparticles, phthalocyanines and an aptamer in order to fabricate aptasensors for the electrochemical detection of prostate cancer biomarker. The aptamer is specifically designed to bind to the biomarker, and the nanocomposites are expected to enhance current output thus lowering detection limits and increasing stability and efficiency. Reproducible results are also expected. Prior to the detection of the prostate cancer biomarker, the quantum dots-phthalocyanine nanohybrids were used to detect L-cysteine, which is an amino acid, in order to verify the synergistic effects as electrode modifiers that lead to the enhancement of current output. This increase in current output is then v exploited for the improvement of aptasensor functionality upon incorporation of the aptamer, for the detection of prostate specific antigen. The research in this thesis has been carried out with the intention of contributing to the world of medical research, more so because of the ever-increasing need for medical care to become accessible to all and not only to those who can afford expensive technologies and treatments. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Chemistry, 2022

- Description: A number of zinc, gallium and indium metallophthalocyanines (MPcs) with diverse substituents have been synthesized and characterized using various characterization tools such as proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR), matrix assisted laser desorption time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry, Fourier-transformed infra-red (FT-IR), Ultraviolet-visible (Uv-vis) spectrophotometry, magnetic circular dichroism and CHNS elemental analysis. The time dependent density functional theory was employed to probe the origin of spectroscopic information in these complexes. Complexes with gallium and indium as central metal showed higher triplet quantum yield compared to the zinc derivatives. Some of the MPcs were covalently linked to nanomaterials such as CdTe, CdTeSe, CdTeSe/ZnO, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as well as metallic gold (AuNPs) and silver (AgNPs) nanoparticles. Others were either surface assembled onto AuNPs and AgNPs or embedded into polystyrene as polymer source. The phthalocyanine-nanomaterial composites (Pc-NMCs) were characterized with FT-IR, UV-visible spectrophotometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The thickness of the thin films was determined by utilization of the knife edge attachment of the A Bruker D8 Discover X-ray diffraction. The optical limiting properties (using the open-aperture Z-scan technique) of the MPcs and the Pc-NMCs were investigated. The investigated MPcs complexes generally showed good optical limiting properties. The nonlinear optical response of the MPcs were improved in the presence of nanomaterials such as the semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs), graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as well as metallic AuNPs and AgNPs with MPc-QDs showing the best optical limiting behavior. The optical limiting properties of the MPcs were greatly enhanced in the presence of polymer thin films.

- Description: This work presents the synthesis, photophysical and photochemical characterization of a series of metallophthalocyanines (MPcs) and boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) and their conjugates with either gold or silver nanoparticles (AuNPs or AgNPs) or graphene quantum dots (GQDs). The rich π-electron systems of GQDs and MPcs employed in this work enabled the coordination of MPcs to GQDs (either as pristine or modified) via the non-covalent (π-π stacking) method. GQDs, AuNPs and AgNPs were also functionalized with L-glutathione (GSH) in order to assist coupling to the Pcs or BODIPY dye. Spectroscopic and microscopic studies confirmed the formation of the respective nanoparticles (NPs) as well as the conjugates which exhibited enhanced photophysicochemical properties in comparison to the phthalocyanines (Pcs) or BODIPY alone. This work also shows that the incorporation of folic acid (FA) into Pcs-NPs composites leads to further enhancements in the singlet oxygen generation capabilities of the resulting conjugates, and so experimentally demonstrates for the first time, a synergy between FA and the respective nanoparticles (GQDs, AuNPs and AgNPs) in affecting the photophysical properties of Pcs complexes. GQDs and Pcs/GQDs hybrids were also herein decorated with AuNPs – metallic nanostructures that employ localized surface plasmon resonances to capture or radiate electromagnetic waves at optical frequencies. These nanostructures herein reported, have been shown to possess enhanced light-matter properties, enabling unique surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) behaviours, with unprecedented enhancement factors of up to 30-fold. This work therefore, reports on the fabrication of Pc/GQDs/AuNPs hybrids and experimentally demonstrates their incredible potential as novel Raman-active PDT agents.

- Description: Syntheses, spectral, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies of phenylthio and amino derivatised metallophthalocyanines complexes are reported. The complexes are immobilized onto a gold macro disk, gold ultramicroelectrode and gold coated fiber electrodes via self assembly with phenylthio MPc derivatives or onto a glassy carbon electrode via electropolymerisation with amino MPc derivatives. For the first time MPc SAMs were formed on gold coated fiber. The electrocatalytic behavior of the modified electrodes was studied for the detection of nitrite and L-cysteine, all modified electrodes showed improved electrocatalytic oxidation compared to the unmodified electrode. The MPc complexes catalyzed nitrite oxidation via a two-electron mechanism producing nitrate. Cobalt tetraaminophthalocyanine showed the best catalytic activity for nitrite oxidation in terms of overpotential lowering compared to other complexes and thus was used for nitrite detection in a food sample, the nitrite concentration was determined to be 59.13 ppm, well within the limit for cured meat products. Electrocatalytic oxidation of L-cysteine on SAM modified gold coated fiber was reported for the first time. The gold coated fiber and ultamicro cylinder electrode were less stable towards the electro-oxidation of cysteine compared to its oxidation on the gold disk. The gold disk electrode gave better catalytic performance in terms of stability and reduction of overpotential. The phenylthio cobalt phthalocyanine derivative gave the best catalytic activity for L-cysteine oxidation in terms of overpotential lowering compared to other phenylthio derivatized MPc complexes. The amount of L-cysteine in human urine was 2.4 mM, well within the urinary L-cysteine excretion range for a healthy human being.

- Description: Metal deterioration over time is a process known as corrosion, an electrochemical process, which can occur by surface chemical actions on metals by its environment. Metal corrosion have great economic, security, and environmental consequences, and its control is a major research area in corrosion science. Amongst the different corrosion protecting approaches, the use of corrosion inhibitors and protective coatings have attracted enormous research interest in this area of scholasticism. This has necessitated the computational and electrochemical investigations of aluminium corrosion inhibitive potentials of some compounds in 1M HCl. Metal free (5_H2), ClGa(III) (5_Ga) and Co(II) (5_Co) tetrakis(4-acetamidophenoxy)phthalocyanines as well as Co(II) 2,9,16-tris(4-(tert-butyl)phenoxy)-23-(pyridin-4-yloxy)phthalocyanine (6) and Co(II) 2,9,16,24-tetrakis(4-(tert-butyl)phenoxy)phthalocyanine (7) were synthesized for the first time and studied for corrosion inhibition. The reported ClGa(III) tetrakis(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl-thio)phthalocyaninine (1), ClGa(III) tetrakis(benzo[d]thiazol-2ylphenoxy)phthalocyanine (2), ClGa(III) tetrakis-4-(hexadecane-1,2-dioxyl)-bis(phthalocyanine) (3) and ClGa(III) tetrakis-4,4′-((4-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-1,2-bis(phenoxy)-bis(phthalocyanine) (4) were also employed for corrosion inhibition of Al in HCl. Corrosion inhibition measurements using electrochemical techniques showed that increased π conjugation caused (1) to (2) to outperform (1a) and (2a) respectively as aluminium corrosion inhibitors in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid. For similar reason, (4) outperformed 2. (1) and (2) were successfully electrodeposited onto aluminium for corrosion retardation in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid solution. Measurements obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy gave corrosion inhibition efficiency values of 82% for 1 and 86% for 2 in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid solution and showed that electrodeposited phthalocyanines have enhanced aluminium corrosion retardation than when in solution. The use of reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (rGONS) alone as aluminium corrosion inhibitor is discouraged because of poor aluminium corrosion inhibition in 1M HCl. However, synergistic effects were observed when rGONS was mixed each with (4) and (3). (5_H2), (5_Ga) and (5_Co) decreased aluminium corrosion in 1M HCl and observation was that the heavier the atom the more decreased the protection and the free base performed best of the three. Studied tertbutylphenoxy-derived CoPcs (6 and 7) exhibited good aluminium corrosion inhibition properties in studied acidic solution and the unsymmetric CoPc (6) which has more heteroatoms, gave better performance. Quantum chemical calculations involved the use of density functional theoretical (DFT) approaches and gave results which corroborated with experimental findings. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Chemistry, 2022

- Description: An exploration on the enhancement of the electrocatalytic activity of phthalocyanines (Pcs) through coupling with a series of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) is undertaken. The preliminary studies using symmetrical Pcs, a cobalt and an iron chloride tetra substituted diethylaminophenoxy Pc (complexes 1 and 2), for the electro-oxidation of nitrite revealed through the various sequential modifications that doped GQDs fare better than their pristine counterparts with respect to improving the electrocatalytic behaviour of Pcs, in particular, the nitrogen-doped GQDs (NGQDs). Following up on this, a series of asymmetric Pc complexes; 2,9,16-tris-(4-tert-butylphenoxy) mono carboxyphenoxy phthalocyanato cobalt (II) (3), 2,9,16-tris-(4-tert-butylphenoxy) mono aminophenoxy phthalocyanato cobalt (II) (4), 2,9,16-tris-(3-diethylamino)phenoxy) mono carboxyphenoxy phthalocyanato cobalt (II) (5) and 2,9,16-tris-(3-diethylamino)phenoxy) mono aminophenoxy phthalocyanato cobalt (II) (6) was prepared in which push-pull systems were compared to other asymmetric complexes that lack this effect towards the electrocatalytic sensing of hydrazine. All asymmetric complexes (3-6) were π-stacked to the NGQDs while those with an NH2 group (4 and 6), were also covalently linked to the NGQDs. These complexes and their corresponding conjugates were characterized accordingly and applied as electrocatalysts in the oxidation of hydrazine. The electrochemical studies revealed that π π stacking yields better responses (higher sensitivities and lower limits of detection) than covalent linking because there are less forces acting on the graphene network. Covalent linking introduces both tensile and compressive forces which in turn results in an increase in the ID/IG ratio and that is unfavourable for electrocatalysis. In comparing the electrodes composed of the π-stacked conjugates to those altered through sequential modifications, despite the conditions not being the same, it can be inferred that the magnitude of the electrostatic forces between the Pcs and the GQDs also plays a significant role in electrocatalysis. The π-stacked conjugates, owing to the manner in which they were prepared, have stronger electrostatic forces acting between the Pc and GQDs hence they were able to elicit a better electrochemical response than the sequentially modified electrodes. In addition to that, it appears that asymmetric Pcs are better electrocatalysts in comparison to the symmetric Pcs.

- Description: This study presents the synthesis, spectroscopic, photophysical and theoretical characterisation of metal-free (H2TPrOPhOPc), cobalt (CoTPrOPhOPc) and manganese (MnTPrOPhOPc) tetra 4-(4-propargyloxy) phenoxy phthalocyanines. Thermal analysis using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed the excellent thermal stability of synthesized tetra 4-(4- propargyloxy) phenoxy phthalocyanines. The metal complexes, CoTPrOPhOPc and MnTPrOPhOPc, exhibited better thermal stability when compared to H2TPrOPhOPc. The residual percentage weight remaining was approximately 70% for CoTPrOPhOPc and MnTPrOPhOPc and 45% for H2TPrOPhOPc after 600°C, clearly confirming the stability of the metal complexes. The MTPrOPhOPcs (where M = H2, Co and Mn) complexes exhibited excellent nonlinear optical properties with strong reverse saturable absorption (RSA), especially when 560 nm excitation laser was used. Their nonlinear optical properties followed this trend: H2TPrOPhOPc > CoTPrOPhOPc > MnTPrOPhOPc. According to the trend observed, the H2TPrOPhOPc was an excellent nonlinear optical limiter when compared to the CoTPrOPhOPc and MnTPrOPhOPc. All the investigated complexes exhibited optical limiting properties comparable to the phthalocyanine complexes reported in the literature. The MTPrOPhOPc complexes were further studied for their electrocatalytic and electroanalytical properties towards the detection of hydrogen peroxide. For the electrocatalytic studies, the synthesized complexes were immobilized onto gold electrode surfaces pre-functionalized with phenylazide (Au-PAz) monolayer. Copper (I) catalyzed alkynyl-azide cycloaddition reaction was used to covalently immobilize the MTPrOPhOPcs onto the gold electrode surfaces to form Au-PAz-MTPrOPhOPc. The MTPrOPhOPcs modified gold surfaces (Au-PAz-MTPrOPhOPc) exhibited good reproducibility and stability in various electrolyte conditions. Electrochemical and surface characterisation of the functionalised gold electrode surfaces confirmed the presence of the MTPrOPhOPcs and their electroanalysis was excellent towards electrocatalytic reduction of H2O2, with the limit of detection (LoD) and limit of quantification (LoQ) in the ^M range. The electrocatalytic reduction peaks for H2O2 were observed at -0.37 V for Au-PAz-MnTPrOPhOPc and -0.31 V for Au-PAz-CoTPrOPhOPc when Ag|AgCl pseudo-reference electrode was used. The Au-PAz-MnTPrOPhOPc and Au- PAz-CoTPrOPhOPc gold electrode surfaces showed good sensitivity and reproducibility towards the electrocatalytic reduction of hydrogen peroxide in pH 7.4 phosphate buffer solution. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Chemistry, 2017

- Description: This work reports on the synthesis of symmetrical and asymmetrical A 3 B type metal free, cobalt and zinc Phthalocyanines (Pc) .A wide range of spectroscopic techniques such as Uv - visible absorption (UV), magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and time correlated single photo n counting spectroscopy (TCSPC) have been used to study the spectroscopic properties of the phthalocyanine complexes. The Z - scan technique was used to comparatively investigate the nonlinear absorption coefficient ( 휷 ) and the nonlinear refraction index ( 풏 ퟐ ) of the synthesized complexes. The following trend was obtained for the synthesized Pc’s in terms of the 휷 values 7.25 × 10 − 10 ( 4b ) > 3.76 × 10 − 10 ( 4a ) > 3.52 × 10 − 10 ( 4c ) > 2.29 × 10 − 10 ( 3c ) > 1.68 × 10 − 10 ( 3a ) > 1.65 × 10 − 10 ( 3b ) mW - 1 . The 휷 values trend of synthesized Pc complexes show that the asymmetrical A 3 B type metal free, cobalt and zinc Pc complexes ( 4a , 4b and 4c ) have larger 휷 values as compared to the octa - substituted symmetrical metal free, cobalt and zinc Pc complexes ( 3a , 3b and 3c ) which is attributed to the low symmetry of the Pc complexes. The five - level model rate equations were used to determine the two photon absorption, excited state absorption and ground state absorption cross sections of the synthesized complexes. The z inc A 3 B type asymmetrical Pc complexes gave the largest two photon absorption and 휎 푒 / 휎 푔 ratio values. This Pc complex could be used in future work to enhance the nonlinear response further by introducing nanomaterials and converting the Pc complex to a binuclear Pc. This work also reports on the density functional theory (DFT) calculations o f dipolar/octupolar contributions in order to study the first order hyperpolarizability of the synthesized Pc complexes.

- Description: This thesis presents the synthesis of neutral and cationic metallophthalocyanines and their gold nanoparticles conjugates. The spectroscopic characterization of these compounds is presented herein. The studies presented in this work shows that the conjugation of gold nanoparticles influenced both photophysical and photochemical properties. Gold nanoparticles were found to enhance the singlet oxygen quantum yield while lowering the fluorescence quantum yields. This work also looks at the effect of anisotropic gold nanoparticles such as nanorods and bipyramids on the photophysical behaviour of the metallophthalocyanines. The effect of the size of the gold nanorods was investigated herein. The results show that photophysical and photochemical properties can be influenced by both size and shape of the nanoparticles. Physical characterization about the loading of nanoparticles was also looked into. Parameters such as the surface area, the number of surface atoms, the number of atoms as well as the number of nanoparticles loaded on the surface of the phthalocyanines were studied. The self-assembled monolayers formed by phthalocyanines on gold surfaces were studied using the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The gold nanoparticles synthesized herein include both organic and water soluble, different capping agents (citrate, tetraammonium bromide (TAOBr) and cetrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The concentration of the gold nanoparticles was measured on the inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and their size and shape were obtained from the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images. A cationic aluminium phthalocyanine and its conjugates were used for photoinactivation of bacteria and fungi. The results show significant reduction and higher activity in the presence of gold nanoparticles, especially nanorods. A small chapter in this work presents an attempted work on the binding of metallothionein protein with protophorphyrin (IX). The pH and concentration dependent binding studies were investigated
