- Description: Phototransferred thermoluminescence (PTTL) induced in synthetic quartz by 470 nm blue light is reported. The glow curve measured at 5 °C/s up to 500 °C after irradiation to 100 Gy shows six peaks at 94, 116, 175, 212, 280 and 348 °C labelled I through VI and another one at 80 °C (labelled A1). PTTL is only observed for peaks A1 and I and is induced at peak A1 as long as peak III has been removed by preheating and at peak I after preheating to deplete peak VI. The inducement of PTTL even when all peaks have been removed points to deep electron traps in the quartz also acting as donors in addition to the putative ones below 500 °C. The PTTL intensity as a function of duration of illumination for A1 goes through a peak and decreases monotonically or to a stable value depending on the preheating temperature. The change of PTTL intensity as a function of illumination time is described using a set of coupled linear differential equations. The number of acceptors and donors in a particular system described in this way is influenced by the preheating temperature.

- Description: Music libraries are relatively recent additions to South African library collections and attempts at forming a music library association have been thwarted through a number of financial and historical societal limitations. Consequently, many South African music librarians feel isolated from the field. This paper examines the effects of this isolation and the benefits that closer association for the librarian could bring. Future outlooks for music libraries in South Africa are discussed and suggestions made for a more positive future. Les bibliothèques de musique sont des additions relativement récentes aux collections des bibliothèques en Afrique du sud. Les tentatives de création d'une aßociation de bibliothécaires de musique ont été contrariées pour des raisons financières, historiques et sociales. Par conséquent, beaucoup de bibliothécaires de musique se sentent isolés du milieu. Cet article examine les effets de cette isolation et les bénéfices que pourrait apporter une aßociation qui rapproche les bibliothécaires. Il aborde des discußions sur des perspectives futures et émet des suggestion afin d'appréhender un avenir plus positif. Musikbibliotheken sind eine relativ neue Erscheinung im Bibliothekswesen Südafrikas. Die Gründung einer musikbibliothekarischen Vereinigung ist aus finanziellen und anderen Gründen heraus immer wieder gescheitert. Daher fühlen sich viele südafrikanische Musikbibliothekare beruflich isoliert. Der Artikel untersucht die Auswirkungen dieser Isolation und die Vorteile, die ein engerer Zusammenschluß den Bibliothekaren bringen könnte. Er wagt einen Ausblick in und macht Vorschläge für die Zukunft südafrikanischer Musikbibliotheken.

- Description: α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles of crystallite size between 3.9 and 9.5 nm were synthesized by a simple sol-gel method using iron (III) nitrate nonahydrate (Fe(NO3)3·9H2O) as a precursor. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was added as a capping agent to avoid agglomeration of the nanoparticles. A single pure phase was obtained when the sample was annealed at 300 °C and 600 °C. The purity was further confirmed with the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The energy band gap of the materials was extrapolated from the Kubelka-Munk relation and it ranges between 1.8 and 2.3 eV. The Photoluminescence of the 3 samples shows a broad emission spectrum centered at about 422 nm when excited by a 336 nm lamp. The emission peaks intensities increased with an increase in the annealing temperature, accept for the 576 nm peak, which was quenched as the temperature increased from 300 °C to 600 °C. The thermoluminescence glow curves were carried out at different heating rates and the samples were exposed to different beta particle doses (82–1315 Gy). The activation energy of the trapped electrons was determined.

- Description: The discovery of coelacanths, Latimeria chalumnae, in Jesser Canyon off Sodwana Bay in northern KwaZulu-Natal in 2000 triggered renewed interest in the deep subtidal habitats associated with submarine canyons. Information stemming from three recreational Trimix diving expeditions in Wright and Jesser canyons between April 1998 and June 2001 revealed distinct and diverse invertebrate and fish communities in the canyons of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park (GSLWP). In total, 69 invertebrate taxa were collected from Wright Canyon, including at least 15 new records for South Africa plus 11 potential new species and 16 range or depth extensions. Divers documented the first five coelacanth specimens and obtained information on fish distribution and abundance. Five different habitat types were recognized supporting distinct biological communities; the sandy plains outside of the canyons, scattered rock outcrops within the sandy plains, the canyon margin, canyon walls and caves and overhangs. The canyon margin is the richest habitat and supports dense communities of invertebrate suspension feeders, as well as a diverse and abundant fish fauna. Dominant canyon invertebrates included sponges, black corals, gorgonians, alcyonarian soft corals and stylasterine lace corals. These invertebrates support a diverse epifauna including basket- and brittlestars, winged oysters and other molluscs. The canyons within the GSLWP protect large populations of commercially important linefish species including the sparids, Chrysoblephus puniceus, C. anglicus, Polysteganus praeorbitalis and P. caeruleopunctatus, as well as several species of serranids and lutjanids. Additional biological sampling and standardized quantitative sampling within the canyons and deep reefs is required to develop a better understanding of their biological communities and the factors that shape them.

Promoting pro-environmental behaviour is critical if higher education institutions are to achieve sustainable resource use. Using surveys, reported energy use and recycling behaviour of staff and students in the Faculty of Education at Rhodes University, South Africa was explored. The results showed that self-reported pro-environmental behaviour was mediated by demographic factors and personal values such as ‘liking of aesthetic beauty and biodiversity’, ‘social relations’, ‘a varied life’ and ‘freedom’. Personal values, though key in shaping participants' attitudes toward the environment did not always translate into pro-environmental behaviour. Situational factors beyond the control of participants were cited as barriers to pro-environmental actions. Lessons from this study point to the need to carefully study the assumptions underlying intervention strategies aimed at promoting pro-environmental behaviour and to get rid of barriers to enable pro-environmental actions.

- Description: Adenosine triphosphate-sulphurylase (ATPS) plays a major role in dissimilatory sulphate reduction. In this study, the level of ATPS activity was monitored in a time course study using a biosulphidogenic batch bioreactor system. A coincident decrease in ATPS activity with a decline in sulphate concentration and an increase in sulphide concentration as biosulphidogenesis proceeded was observed. Flask studies further showed sulphate to be stimulatory to ATPS, while sulphide proved to be inhibitory. The effect of ions (Ca^(2+), Cl^(−), Fe^(2+) and Zn^(2+)) on the ATPS activity was also investigated. Most of the ions studied (Ca^(2+), Cl^(−) and Fe^(2+)) were stimulatory at lower concentrations (40–120 mg/l) but proved toxic at higher concentrations (>120 mg/l). In contrast, Zn^(2+) was inhibitory even at low concentrations ( 40 mg/l). ATPS may potentially be used as an enzymatic marker for biological sulphate reduction in sulphate-rich wastewaters and natural environments (anaerobic systems such as soils and sediments found in freshwater and marine systems), providing all residual sulphide and interfering ions are removed using a simple preparative step.

- Description: Current reforms in mathematics education emphasise the need for pedagogy because it offers learners opportunities to develop their proficiency with complex high-level cognitive processes. One has always associated the ability to make mathematical connections, together with the teacher's role in teaching them, with deep mathematical understanding. This article examines the nature and quality of the mathematical connections that the teachers' representations of those connections enabled or constrained. The researchers made video recordings of four Grade 11 teachers as they taught a series of five lessons on algebra-related topics. The results showed that the teachers' representations of mathematical connections were either faulty or superficial in most cases. It compromised the learners' opportunities for making meaningful mathematical connections. The researchers concluded by suggesting that helping teachers to build their representation repertoires could increase the effectiveness of their instructional practices.

The co‐existence of multiple carnivores in an ecosystem could be restricted by their similarity in ecological niches (e.g. dietary overlap); however, high prey abundances could facilitate their co‐existence. Although the development of small, enclosed reserves (over 400 km2) in South Africa has reduced human–carnivore conflict, these systems may increase the likelihood of carnivore intra‐guild competition due to the clumping of competing carnivores into these restricted spaces. Using carnivore scat and kill site analyses, we determined the dietary preferences and overlap of sympatric large carnivores in a small, enclosed reserve, Selati Game Reserve (Selati).

South African Journal of Botany 54, 603–606.] based on a single specimen collected in 1936, recently discovered plants of this species proved it to be a new genus. In habit Kappia resembles Baseonema Schltr. and Rendle, Batesanthus N.E.Br., Mondia Skeels and Stomatostemma N.E.Br. However, as far as floral structure is concerned, Kappia reveals more affinity with Raphionacme Harv. DNA sequence data show Kappia to be distinct from Batesanthus, Mondia and Raphionacme Harv. and weakly supported as a sister to Stomatostemma.

- Description: publisher version , Biomass pre-treatment is essential for achieving high levels of bioconversion through increased accessibility of hydrolytic enzymes to hydrolysable carbohydrates. However, pre-treatment by-products, such as sugar and lignin degradation products, can negatively affect the performance of hydrolytic (mannanolytic) enzymes. In this study, two monomeric sugars, five sugar degradation products, five lignin derivatives and four liquors from biomass feedstocks pre-treated by different technologies, were evaluated for their inhibitory effects on mannanolytic enzymes (α-galactosidases, β-mannanases and β-mannosidases). Lignin derivatives elicited the greatest inhibitory effect on the mannanolytic enzymes, followed by organic acids and furan derivatives derived from sugar degradation. Lignin derivative inhibition appeared to be as a result of protein–phenolic complexation, leading to protein precipitating out of solution. The functional groups on the phenolic lignin derivatives appeared to be directly related to the ability of the phenolic to interfere with enzyme activity, with the phenolic containing the highest hydroxyl group content exhibiting the greatest inhibition. It was also demonstrated that various pre-treatment technologies render different pre-treatment soluble by-products which interact in various ways with the mannanolytic enzymes. The different types of biomass (i.e. different plant species) were also shown to release different by-products that interacted with the mannanolytic enzymes in a diverse manner even when the biomass was pre-treated using the same technology. Enzyme inhibition by pre-treatment by-products can be alleviated through the removal of these compounds prior to enzymatic hydrolysis to maximize enzyme activity.

- Description: Best-practice guidelines to improve recreational fishers’ handling during catch-and-release (CandR) events are critical to improve the conservation and management of fish stocks worldwide. While best-practice research is growing, there are knowledge gaps, with the effects of sand exposure on fish mucous membranes understudied. This study aimed to determine the effects of exposing a fish to sand during a CandR event. A total of 360 juvenile (48–137 mm TL) Cape stumpnose Rhabdosargus holubi were subjected to a simulated CandR event during which they were either held: (i) with wet hands, or (ii) dry hands; or with wet hands and then placed on either (iii) wet sterilised sand, (iv) dry sterilised sand, (v) wet unsterilised sand, or (vi) dry unsterilised sand. Fish were maintained in a recirculating system for two weeks, euthanised and subjected to an examination of their mucous layer (bacterial counts, abrasion counts and percentage of abrasion area) and an internal biological assessment. Bacteria fro m fish mucous layers were cultivated on agar plates to count bacterial colonies.

- Description: Plasmodesmal connections are unique, highly dynamic intercellular structures that are lined by the plasmamembrane. They are believed to be a vital intercellular communication channel between living cells, linking numbers of living cells into interconnected, highly specialised cellular domains, thus enabling the plant to act as an integrated organism. Their evolution in the higher plant was inevitable. It is accepted that cell heterogeneity rather than cell divergence pressurised developing plant systems along a route that led to the development of intercellular passages and connections. With time these connections have evolved to allow some degree of regulation and traffic control. This paper explores some of the structure/function relationships in plasmodesmata. Attention is focused on the potential role of the neck region of these remarkable structures and discusses models which may explain the processes involved in regulating the movement of substances from cell to cell.

- Description: The discovery of the African coelacanth in 1938 and subsequently the Indonesian coelacanth in 1998 has resulted in a keen interest in molecular studies on the coelacanth. A major focus has been on the phylogenetic position of the coelacanth. Lobe-finned fish such as the coelacanth are thought to be at the base of the evolutionary branch of fish leading to tetrapods. These studies have further aimed to resolve the phylogenetic relationship of extant lobe-finned fish (two coelacanth species and the lungfishes) to vertebrates. Notwithstanding the lack of readily accessible good-quality coelacanth tissue, several major contributions to coelacanth molecular studies and biology have been possible. The mitochondrial genome sequences of both species of the coelacanth suggest that they diverged from one another 40–30 million years ago. A number of large gene families such as the HOX, protocadherin and heat shock protein clusters have been characterized. Furthermore, the recent successful construction of a large-insert (150–200 kilobase) genomic library of the Indonesian coelacanth will prove to be an invaluable tool in both comparative and functional genomics. Here we summarize and evaluate the current status of molecular research, published and databased, for both the African (Latimeria chalumnae) and the Indonesian (Latimeria menadoensis) coelacanth.

- Description: Background: Suicidal behaviour amongst college students constitutes a significant social and public health problem globally. This study determined the prevalence and associated factors of suicidal ideation amongst students of higher education in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM), South Africa. Methods: In this institution-based cross-sectional study, a multistage cluster sampling of 826 participants, drawn from a college in NMBM, was conducted from January to March 2020. Data were collected with a standardised self-administered questionnaire. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors associated with suicidal ideation. Results: Participants’ ages ranged from 18 to 24 years, with a mean age of 20.49 years (standard deviation, 1.88 years). The lifetime prevalence of suicidal ideation and plans in the preceding 12 months were 24.5% and 9.6%, respectively. The odds of suicidal ideation were higher in students who experienced bullying (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 1.89; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.35–2.65), mental illness (AOR, 1.89; 95% CI, 1.35–2.65), a history of sexual assault (AOR, 2.50; 95% CI, 1.20–5.21) and experience of sexual assault by or to a close family member (AOR, 1.69; 95% CI, 1.01–2.82). Underlying chronic illness was associated with a twofold risk for suicidal ideation in both sexes. Conclusion: About a quarter of the students sampled at the college had experienced suicidal ideation and some had had suicidal plans in the preceding 12 months. Screening for the identified risk factors amongst the student population coupled with prompt interventions would mitigate the risk of suicide in the study population. - Description: El Hierro has been characterized by the balance between human development and environmental sustainability. The island was historically far from the mass tourism developments dominant on the other Canary Islands. Tourism accommodations in El Hierro are few compared to more developed coastal areas in the Archipelago, and recreational activities are mainly linked to cultural and natural sites and resources. This chapter focuses on La Restinga fishing village and its coasts, where the ‘Sea of Calms’ and one multiple-use Marine Reserve (MR) are located, both of which became popular over the last decade. The tourist development experience has promoted a new way of looking at the sea and conceptualizing its habitats and populations. In 2014, after the submarine volcano eruption occurred in 2011, we estimated that at least 25,391 dives had been carried out in the diving spots established by the MR and other diving sites close to La Restinga. Despite the difficulties experienced after the volcano eruption, a unique imaginaire has been consolidated, thanks to the image of the island's exclusive nature and iconic elements. In addition, the rapid recovery of the destination is an excellent example of how the tourism system can adapt and incorporate unexpected events such as volcanic eruptions.
