  • Description: The little drums, with membranes of iguana, water lizard, skin are most musical and respond to every finesse of fingering. The are traditionally associated with the royal songs of Bunyoro. This song refers to a previous Mukama of Bunyoro, Kyebambi, who, they say, was much loved by his people. Rukidi wa Mukama about 20 years ago, (1930) and he was followed by Kyebambi, they said. Ntimbo praise song with four Ntimbo Goblet drums, pinned, open, ling stem and small foot.   • Description: "Let us play the Zeze lute so that we can remember our old songs. Do not sing in a hurry. Take your time. We, the Gogo are singing in Tanganyika the land of our birth. Why do people sing all my tunes?" A lovely slow chant in which all the people joined, men, women and chidldren. It is clear that the Gogo are a poetic people with great lyrical ability. The local composer comes forward and starts each line for the people to follow. The song was recorded out in the open in the village of Mvumi without reharsal of any kind. It seems likely that it could have continued almost indefinitely, but the exigencies of the recording apparatus and the fact that it was taken before the advent of long playing records made abbreviation necessary. The unexpected loud passages were unfortunately slightly over modulated but, with the technical faults except this recording gives a fair idea of the artistic ca[abilities of these remarkable performers. The recording is in two parts, the second pitched lower than the first and accompanied by a flute obligato which has little if any direct bearing on the melody itself. The player Yelele Lungu is one of two blind muscians in the Petauke district. Blind from birth he has developed an unusual degree of petic imagery. He had bever seen either the sun or the moon and his poetry consequently reflected a blind man's conception of natural phenomena.   • Description: This song was recorded by moonlight by a very gay and picturesquely dressed group of Xhosa people, young and old men and women. The garments were of pale ochre and yellow and many men and women were smoking pipes of great length, both bowl and stem. Clothes, tobacco pauches and necklaces all beautifully beaded. During the course of this song the owner of the nearest house shouted out: "Should not the owner of this place be paid?" When his voice came out loud and clear in the playback, all the people burst out laughing and he vanished amongst the crowd covered with embrrassment. Song for Mhlahlo dance, with clapping.

The high price of sisal this year (1950) has created a demand and the local Sukuma have been cutting their sisal hedges and getting the fibre for sale to Indian buyers. A few days after this song was sung an order had to be issued by the authorities forbidding, temporarily, the buying of sisal as the Sukuma were neglecting to harvest both their grain and cotton crops which were being left to spoil in the fields.   • Description: There is some doubt about the origin of this song. The singers claimed that it was a country song before Ntsikana used it as a hymn by the early part of the last century. Others affirm that Ntsikana himself composed it. In the 1700s Ntsikana prphesised that people would be coming from the North (the Fingos) and that the Whites would be coming with the Bible. The song was Ntsikana's own song and Rev. John Knox Bokwe set it in its present form, (information by his son J. T. Bokwe). During the song a man of about 35, danced a stamping dance. He was beautifully dressed in blanket edged with pale blue beads, wearing it like a train. He was also wearing several pounds worth of beads around his neck and torso. This song is sung at the weddings of the "Red Blanket" people. The dancer's beads were mostly in necklaces composed of strands of solid colour. He also wore double-stranded bracelets of pale blue and green beads. He carried a beautiful beaded animal skin, part of which had been sewn up to form a bag with a bead tasselled ornament.
