- Description: The Ebi dance has several variations which all follow the general pattern of a circular dance file. The men take the inner circle and the girls the outer, and the drums are outside the ring. The traditional dress for the men is a black or black and red loin cloth made of bark fibre. This is passed between the legs and up over the hips to the waist. It is held in place by a belt and the stiff cloth when properly set gives the impression of a large black tulip in which the mans torso rides on 2 legs. The most attractive feature of these Mangbetu style dance is the bright scarlet headress of the dancers made of tail feathers of the Congo grey parrot. They are a great treasure to these people, feathers representing part of the token payment of a bride's 'lobolo' or bride 'dowry'. They are said to represent a sign of wealth or social position in the tribe. - Description: The players friend sat beside him with another Ekembe on which he played one note by way of a rhythmic accompaniment as the second instrument was not peoperly in tune, and so they could not be played together. This policeman, it appears, would insist upon any man he arrested dancing before him to the tune of his Ekembe on their way to the police station. No one thought this to be an imposition and in fact both policeman and offender enjoyed the performances. - Description: Herdman's tune from the highlands on the eastern border of the Congo where the hills run alongside the great western rift opposite the Ruwenzori mountains. This remarkable player was somewhat 'simple' herdsman. He plays his flute all day to his cattle and has developed, they say, a distinct style of his own. He is inclined to hum while he plays and his voiced notes can be heard forming a celeste with those of the flute. The player was given a 'Highly commended' prize in the 1952 Osborn Awards for the best African musicians of the year.
