- Description: Away from the Congo river itself it appears that the art of sending drum messages deteriorates into the sendng of signals only, the former being based upon the tonality of the individual words comprising the sentences transmitted, the latter comprising pre-set phrases and rhythms to which certain significance is attached. The signals may have risen from messages in the past but the skill of 'talking' on the drums has almost if not entirely vanished among the Mangbele. The significance ofthe 'Tamatsaro' signal was not explained. Drum rhythms or signals with 2 slit drums, 2 large pod shaped slit drums, 2 long cyclindrical drums.

- Description: This recording of the sound of genuine talking drums was made on the banks of the Congo River near Stanleyville, where the river steamers coming up-stream form Leopoldville, 1000 miles away, are held up bt the first rapids named after H. M. Stanley, the great explorer. He first saw them in 1876 on his famous first journey across Africa from East to West. The Lokele people of this region have always been famous for their drum messages. Stanley, writing about them said "They have not yet adopted electric signals but possess a system of communication quite as effective. Their huge drums by being struck in several parts convey language as clear to the initiated as vocal speech." The drum messages can still be heard up and down the river although these days with modern communication methods the people do not need to use their drums as they used to, and consequently it is said to be dying out as so many other African crafts. A missionary , the Reverand John Carrington, from the Baptist mission at Yakusu wrote an excellent book on these Lokele talking drums of the Upper Congo river, the same kind of drums that Stanley heard. For years he had been studying the Lokele language of the people around the mission at Yakusu, but at the time of recording he was many miles down the river, and not available. His colleague from the Yakusu Mission, Mr W. H. Ford, who had also made a keen study of the language, here explains something of the theory behind the sending of drum messages in Central Congo, as experienced both by himeself and by John Carrington. Drum messaages with wooden slit drum.

- Description: These loose note xylophones are played by three ad sometimes four men sitting on either side of the instrument. The Zande dance is performed in a circle to the cheerful sound of the xylophone. All the dancers move in union with small steps in a set pattern which ensures that the circle moves around gradually in an anti-clockwise direction. A characteristic gesture by Zande dancers is the holding out of the hands, palms upwards gently raising and lowering the forearms in time with the music. Zande dance with Kponingbo xylophone.

- Description: The songs are in the Luba/Sanga language, but with words of Bemba here and there. The titles of the first words of each 'memory' were given by Joseph Kiwele. In this composition, Joseph Kiwele collected together all the hunting songs of his home district and combined them in a composite whole. They were sung by his choir of school boys who made their name famous by being the first to sing an African composed Mass, also composed by Kiwele, "Missa Katanga". The choir partially disbanded about 1950 and the remnants only appear in this recording. Joseph Kiwele nine years later became Minister of Education in Katanga under President Tshombe but died suddenly of a strokein 1962 after an outstanding musical career. A miscellany of twenty-two hunting songs, with 2 Goblet drums and 1 wooden slit drum

Some comparative studies of the fauna in soils developed under natural forest, pine and bluegum

- Description: [From Introduction] It has been said that, "If a nation saves its trees, the trees will save the nation." The truth of this assertion is apparent in many parts of the world today. In South Africa, fires and demands in the past for timber have led to extensive depletion of the Natural Forests. In many cases, natural revegetation has been slow to develop and deterioration of the soil has resulted. The desire to replace the tree cover and at the same time to meet an increasing internal demand for timber, has led to widespread planting of Pine and Bluegum. It is probable that more trees have now been planted than were destroyed in the past. The silviculturist however, who develops a pure stand on land which previously supported the mixed stand, should anticipate a change in soil properties as a natural accompaniment of such an undertaking. The nature of this change is the primum mobile of the present comparative study. The forest soils studied were taken in the Cape Province in the following areas:- Grahamstown; Amatola Mountains, District Alice; Witte-els-Bosch, District Humansdorp, during the course of a year. The physical and chemical properties, and the faunal composition of the soil samples were examined in relation to the different tree covers. Because of the necessity of taking large numbers of samples and thorough examination of these to arrive at a definite conclusion, the work is necessarily incomplete. It is felt however that the results obtained justify a further study of this aspect of soil biology.
