The impact of financial developments on economic growth in Ghana: evidence from the manufacturing industries

  • Description: This study provides an analysis of financial and growth dynamics with a view to assess the impact of financial development on economic growth in Ghana. The study also examines the extent to which financial developments in Ghana are affecting capital accumulation and industrial sector growth. The analysis was performed by examining the financial development indicators and economic growth data for Ghana over the period from 1965 to 2016. The study was motivated by the theoretical indications that improvements in financial intermediation within the economy can induce growth of the real sector and thus lead to economic growth. There have been notable structural and financial sector reforms in Ghana since the early and late 1980s. The indications in the financial sector portray improvement in the measures of financial development in the post-reform era as compared to the years before. The findings of the study complement existing research findings and information on finance-growth association as well as the influence that finance has on the sources of growth. The study adopted real per capita gross domestic product (GDP) as a measure of economic growth. In addition, three real sector indicators serving as the sources of growth, included; capital accumulation, industrial value-added and manufacturing value added. The analysis also adopts four financial indicators, expressed as percentage shares of GDP, namely; domestic credit to private sector, total domestic credit provided by financial sector, broad money supply and financial sector deposits—as measures of financial development. The analysis of the impact of the financial development on capital accumulation, industrial output growth, manufacturing productivity and economic growth were estimated using the linear regression estimation techniques within the GMM estimation approach. The study, additionally, examined the short-run and long-run impacts of financial development on economic growth indicators by employing the Vector Autoregressive Regression (VAR) within the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach. The study further assesses the direction of causality between financial development and economic growth indicators using the cointegration and Engle-Granger causality testing approach within VAR models. The Bayesian Vector Auto Regression (BVAR) models were applied to examine the drivers of economic growth and to assess the sensitivity of economic growth to financial development and macro-economic shocks. This assessment was carried out to examine the maximising behaviour of financial development and to find out if there exists threshold point beyond which finance adversely affects economic growth in Ghana. The results showed that credit to private sector shows a strong positive persistence in promoting economic growth in Ghana. The results show that financial development dynamics in Ghana positively affect long run economic growth and further indicate that the rate of impact was relatively higher in the post reform period of 1984 to 2016. The study further found a bi-directional causal association between financial development and economic growth. Regarding the sources of growth, the study found that financial development strongly contributes positively to capital accumulation in the long-term, however, the findings further suggested that, to some extent, the growing size of finance dampens capital formation and economic growth. This suggested the existence of inefficiencies in the expanding size of total credit offered by the financial system in Ghana. The study further found a long-run positive association between financial development and industrial productivity (except for manufacturing) growth in Ghana, with industry growth substantially determined by private credit. The results of the assessment on the sensitivity of economic growth to shocks in financial development indicators show that Ghana ‘s economic growth is, to a larger extent, influenced by domestic credit provided to the private sector. Also, the results showed that economic growth has been highly responsive to macro-economic shocks such as government expenditure and industrial sector growth although industrial growth seems to show a strong negative persistence on Ghana ‘s economy. The results from the analysis of finance and economic growth shows that existence of different optimal growth maximising points domestic credit, broad money, financial sector deposits and the overall financial development ratios as depicted by the various inverted U-shaped relationship between the financial development indicators and economic growth. The optimal size or maximising positions or thresholds for private credit and total credit were found to be at approximately 20.0 per cent and 28.0 per cent of GDP, respectively. On the other hand, the optimal size or minimum positions or thresholds for broad money supply and total financial sector deposits were found to be at approximately 19.0 per cent and 10.0 per cent of GDP, respectively. With regards to broad money supply-to-GDP and financial sector deposit-to-GDP ratios, the respective averages of 23.19 per cent and 13.77 per cent for the period 1965-2015 are higher than the minimum required thresholds of 19.00 per cent and 10.00 per cent, respectively. The findings show that financial developments have a strong positive association with economic growth, but the results also give the indication that although financial development can enhance growth and inefficiencies in the financial system can equally dampen growth at some levels. overall, the study found that financial reforms have positively contributed to economic growth in Ghana and the impacts of financial development on economic growth in Ghana have been higher in the post-reform era. The effect of financial reforms on capital accumulation was not significant although the study established that the impact of structural reforms was strong and adversely affected capital accumulation in Ghana. With regards to the industrial productivity growth, the study found a positive association between financial development and industry growth in Ghana. It was, however, observed that financial reforms have fails to significantly affect growth of industrial productivity and the impact of financial development on industry sector growth in Ghana are low but the sector experienced relatively higher growth in the pre-reform era.

A Model for Crime Management in Smart Cities

  • Description: The main research problem addressed in this study is that South African cities are not effectively integrating and utilising available, and rapidly emerging smart city data sources for planning and management. To this end, it was proposed that a predictive model, that assimilates data from traditionally isolated management silos, could be developed for prediction and simulation at the system-of-systems level. As proof of concept, the study focused on only one aspect of smart cities, namely crime management. Subsequently, the main objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a predictive model for crime management in smart cities that effectively integrated data from traditionally isolated management silos. The Design Science Research process was followed to develop and evaluate a prototype model. The practical contributions of this study was the development of a prototype model for integrated decision-making in smart cities, and the associated guidelines for the implementation of the developed modelling approach within the South African IDP context. Theoretically, this work contributed towards the development of a modelling paradigm for effective integrated decision-making in smart cities. This work also contributed towards developing strategic-level predictive policing tools aimed at proactively meeting community needs, and contributed to the body of knowledge regarding complex systems modelling.

Regional thickening as game-changing: examining transnational activities of gender and women-focused civil society actors for region-building in Southern Africa

  • Description: This thesis argues that norms, in general, have proliferated in a neo-liberalising context since the 1990s, in particular norms on gender, and how they have changed to indicate new agency and influence, amounts to game change. Despite growing transnational activities, regionalisation and the increasing interface between state and non-state regionalism in a transnational context since the advent of liberalisation and democratisation, analyses in regional International Relations (IR) studies, so far, largely maintain linear logic. The increasing non-state processes, and their connection to state processes in norm creation, norm adaptation, norm diffusion and implementation around broad questions of security including in the area of gender, amount to regional thickening. Regional thickening revealed in terms of increasing regionalisation, regionalism, and region-ness whose effect is game-changing challenges mainstream linear approaches in regional IR studies. Game-changing here, refers to, processes promoting the development of norms mentioned above in the interest of contributing to improved security across a region. This study is focused on Southern Africa, defined here, as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. This study’s analytical approach is informed by alternatives to mainstream approaches, emphasising processes, rather than linearity inherent in regional IR studies. By privileging the actual game-changing processes, interactions, and agency around the norm development cycle, this study examines how regional thickening in a transnational context promotes game-changing activities, promoting the development of the norm cycle, seeking to have improved security. A mixed method approach involving gathering of information from multiple primary and secondary sources are used. The study found transnational activities and regionalisation of gender and women-focused civil society actors, game-changing. These civil society actors organised in two ways. First, by way of advocacy and in seeking representation within intergovernmental policymaking structures at a regional level. Second, by way of organising around transnational communities in a transnational context in the interest of addressing gendered insecurities at localised levels. Regional thickening as game-changing here pointed to a growing recognition and participation of civil society actors in intergovernmental policymaking spaces as having created a groundswell for game change at localised levels. This led to policy development, adaptation, diffusion, and implementation by both state and non-state actors contributing to norm changes, improved social policies, and to greater security. The actual changes emerging from these actors’ activities on the ground are in terms of unlearning patriarchal behaviours, opening up development for women, and increasing their living standards, education, health, and their freedom. In assessing the transnational environment on gendered insecurity in Southern Africa, this thesis developed an innovative framework of regional thickening as game-changing. This framework plots how game-changing developed, evolved, and its importance in addressing gendered insecurity. The thesis has proposed that game-changing transnational activities and regionalisation that change, and diffuse norms to break learnt behaviour, have helped disrupt rigid institutionalisation, and are aiding to bring non-linear discourses to the fore.

  • Description: Nigeria has the largest population in Africa and with approximately 160 million people. Nigeria has one of the largest populations of poor people in the world. Over the years, the rate of maternal and child mortality reduction in Nigeria has been slow and this is largely due to bad infrastructure, low quality of education and poor health sector. This is largely due to government bureaucracy, problems within the aid administration process and its influence on developmental issues. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were created for countries to address human developmental issues within different countries around the world. The countries had to meet MDGs by 2015. Nigeria was not able to meet many of the set targets and had made only few improvements within the health department. This is largely due to government bureaucracy and the slow pace that is maintained during the formulation and implementation of governmental policies and programs. This study seeks to explore various issues that are identified in the attainment of MDGs 4 and 5: MDGs 4 with target 5 - 2/3 reductions in under than five mortality rates and MDG 5 with target 6 - ¾ reductions in the maternal mortality rate. This study will assess the efforts made by local and international organizations during the implementation of MDGs 4 and 5. This study will identify the impact of foreign aid on the health sector, with an intervention on the maternal and child mortality ratio, key international donors in the maternal and child sector. Document analysis is been adopted as the methodological approach for this research. These analysis focuses on documents such as publications, reports, policy papers and academic literature. One of the key findings in this study is that - lack of good policies of health services is a major barrier to the improvement in maternal and child mortality in Nigeria.

  • Description: The lack of visible academic excellence in South Africa has necessitated the search for a more in-depth approach in teaching and learning. The Department of Basic Education, school administrators and School Governing Bodies are not left out in the search for a distinct approach that would be able to assist teachers and also accommodate diverse learning abilities found in the classroom. The purpose of this study is to investigate English Second Language teachers’ awareness and implementation of differentiated instruction in selected high schools in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. The objectives were to find out the extent to which teachers adopt differentiated instructions in their classes: to examine teachers’ narratives about differentiated instruction and the alternative instruction teachers’ use in their classrooms. The study was anchored on the socio-cultural theory, multiple intelligence theory and learning style theory. It employed a mixed method research and triangulation, which was very beneficial for the validation of the research findings. It followed a case study exploratory design and descriptive survey design. A purposive sample of hundred and six (106) participants were used in the study. The quantitative data were analysed using tables, frequencies and percentages while the qualitative data were analysed thematically. The findings of the study revealed that ESL Grade 10 high school teachers were not aware of the term “Differentiated Instruction” even though to some extent they adopted DI approach. Teachers had mixed narratives about DI implementation and they used different alternative instructions during their lessons. The researcher recommended that teachers should be introduced to DI approach and be given more assistance, motivation, exposure and trainings in the form of conferences and seminars on proper DI implementation. Also teachers should be encouraged to continuously develop themselves academically in order to adjust to the new trend of managing the diverse learners that exist in their classes and in differentiating instruction with technology.

Simulation as a teaching methodology in midwifery education

  • Description: Increased rates of maternal and perinatal deaths remain a challenge in many countries. According to the National Committee on Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths report maternal deaths in South Africa are also related to avoidable factors that could be among other reasons, because of poor performance by midwives. Since such poor performance is further associated with the different forms of clinical practice being taught by nurse educators in midwifery education at different nursing Education Institutions. Thus a revised common clinical teaching methodology, in the form of strategies, utilized in all the training nursing education institutions of final-year undergraduate midwifery students is needed. It would have an impact on how well midwifery students are uniformly prepared for role-taking in clinical practice. The overarching aim of the study was to develop strategies to facilitate simulation as a teaching methodology in midwifery education. The objectives for this study were to:•explore and describe the perceptions of midwifery students with regard to their preparation for role-taking in clinical practice;•explore and describe the perceptions of nurse educators with regard to simulation as a teaching methodology in midwifery education;•provide a literature context with regard to simulation as a teaching methodology in midwifery education, and•develop strategies to facilitate simulation as a teaching methodology for midwifery education. The study followed a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual research approach design, applying Kolb’s theory (1984) of experiential learning as the paradigm in four phases. In Phase one, the researcher collected data from two groups of participants using semi-structured one-on-one and focus group voice recorded interviews. Focus group interviews were arranged with 27final-year undergraduate midwifery students(Group 1) and individual interviews were conducted with 12 nurse educators (Group 2) in midwifery education and were inclusive of those in the pilot study. viThe participants were purposefully selected across three provinces of South Africa in four nursing Education Institutionsusing set inclusion criteria. Data analysis was done using Saldaña’s (2009) method of content analysis. The researcher and an independent coder analysed and coded the data independently from each other and concurrently for both groups of participants. From the results, three main themes and eight sub-themes emerged. Theme One combined the experiences of both groups and highlighted their experience of simulation as being beneficial. Theme Two addressed the barriers encountered by the participants of both groups when the simulation was used as a teaching methodology. Theme Three addressed the various recommendations that were suggested by both groups of participants on how to strengthen simulation as a teaching methodology. In Phase Two, a contextual description was provided about simulation as a teaching methodology in midwifery education through the use of related literature. The contextual description included the macro-, meso-and micro-environments as related to the use of simulation as a teaching methodology in midwifery education. In Phase Three, following contextual description of the concept of simulation as a teaching methodology the main concept of the study had to be identified and served as a foundation for strategies. The research themes became foundational content for the conceptual framework which was developed using the principles of Dickoff, James and Wiedenbach (1968) as a guide towards the needed strategies for the study. Lastly, in Phase Four three strategies were developed for the facilitation of simulation as a teaching methodology in midwifery education. The three main strategies developed were as follows:•mobilise resources, to facilitate the implementation of simulation in midwifery education;•create an environment conducive to supporting simulation education; and •design a relevant midwifery programme that accommodates simulation within the clinical module. The developed strategies will assist nurse educators to be better prepared to implement midwifery simulation as a teaching methodology in midwifery education. The three principles of research ethics according to The Belmont Report namely, respect for human dignity, beneficence and justice were adhered to throughout the study. Trustworthiness was ensured according to the four principles indicated by Lincoln and Guba’s (1985) Model of Trustworthiness which included credibility, dependability, transferability and neutrality.

Short regimen in the management of multi drug resistant tuberculosis in Buffalo City Metropolitan, Eastern Cape, South Africa

  • Description: Tuberculosis is an epidemic disease which is regarded as the tenth leading cause of death in the world (World Health Organization, 2014). New 580 000 cases of multidrug resistant tuberculosis have been reported by WHO (2014). Patients diagnosed with rifampicin/multi-drug resistant tuberculosis were usually treated for 18-24 months if they convert within the designated period of 4-6 months. Several trials were conducted in other countries like Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, etc. on the use of short regimen of 9-12 months. Short regimen was introduced in January 2017 in South Africa and it has not been evaluated for its effectiveness in Buffalo City Metropolitan, South Africa. This study was conducted to examine RR/MDR TB outcomes following the introduction of a short regimen and the outcomes were based on the set target of 50% MDR TB success rate and 5.4% TB client lost to follow up rate as per the Annual Performance Plan (APP) of 2017/18. The conversion rate was also examined though the target was not set in APP. A retrospective study using a descriptive design was used to collect data at Nkqubela TB and Duncan Village Day hospitals which are in Buffalo City Metropolitan. The population of the study were all records of patients diagnosed, registered and initiated on rifampicin/multi-drug resistant TB in a short regimen in Nkqubela TB Hospital and Duncan Village Day Hospital between January 2017 and July 2017. All 118 patient records that met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study therefore convenience sampling was used. Ethical approval was obtained from the University of Fort Hare (ethical clearance number: MUP101SSOM01). Approval to conduct the study was also approved by the Eastern Cape Department of Health Ethics, BCM Health District Manager and two public hospitals. Two research assistants and one data capture signed oath of confidentiality prior data extraction. Unique codes were used to ensure anonymity and privacy and all data was treated in a confidential manner. Data was collected using a self-designed structured questionnaire which was tested for validity and reliability through pilot study. Data analysis was done by a statistician using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences version 24. RR/MDR TB outcomes of participants who were initiated on short regimen between January and July 2017 were examined between January and July 2018 at the end of 12 months. Findings showed that the majority of the affected age group was between the ages of 36-45 years in both genders (34.7%) with males (n=71) being highly affected than females (n=47). Bisho/King William’s Town sub-district was the most affected in Buffalo City Metropolitan (n=61). The majority of participants that were affected were the Africans (98.3%), unemployed (51.7%), people living with HIV/AIDS (62.7%) and those previously treated for TB (57.6%). Records revealed that participants living with HIV had a mean CD4 count of 194.5 and 202.4 and mean viral load of 203183.0 and 651888.7. Smokers and alcohol users were higher in males (20.3% and 16.9% respectively) than in females (2.5% and 5.1% respectively). Two patient records were missing and other four patient records were incompletely recorded to determine data on smoking and alcohol consumption. Findings revealed a smear conversion rate of 68.5% excluding 47 participants who had negative baseline smear results and one participant who had extra-pulmonary TB. Twenty one percent of the participants did not have consecutive smear results during the intensive phase. TB client lost to follow up rate was 13.5% (n=16) and 10 of all TB clients lost to follow up interrupted treatment for ≥5 months. Eleven TB clients lost to follow up were from Buffalo City Municipality Metropolitan. TB client lost to follow up was high in males (n=13). Rifampicin/multidrug resistant TB treatment success rate was 72.9% with mean response to treatment of 17.2 weeks. Weight (p0.005 and CI 2.750, 15.189) and body mass index (p0.004 and CI 1.232, 6.242) as well as duration of treatment interruption (p0.000 and CI -14.785, -8. 644) and duration of treatment (p0.001 and CI -65.385, -16.403) were statistically significant to treatment success. Based on these findings, it is therefore concluded that short regimen is effective in the management of RR/MDR TB despite high TB client lost to follow up rate. Decentralisation of drug resistant TB management; primary health care reengineering; use of NIMDR-trained nurses; tracing of TB interrupters; HIV management; electronic patient management system and review of how EDR register works; proper record keeping and proper recording; extensive and ongoing counselling, patient support, health education and patient monitoring; and political involvement; is recommended. Further research is recommended to identify patient and service related factors that affect TB treatment outcomes.

Governing pregnancy in South Africa: political and health debate, policy and procedures

  • Description: South Africa democratised in 1994. However, due to the discriminatory and segregationist character of the preceding regime, vast swathes of the country’s spaces and people entered the democratic period heavily deprived of essential government services. This was the case with health care in general, including maternal health care. There were also little to no national data available on maternal deaths, especially among the black population. One of the first tasks of the new National Department of Health (NDoH) was to target the high maternal mortality rate. The NDoH made maternal deaths notifiable by law and instituted auditing and information gathering systems in the health sector; health infrastructure was expanded exponentially, and maternal health care was made free. Despite this, the last 24 years have seen the maternal mortality escalate. The latest statistics show that between 1200 and 1300 women die in the South African public health sector each year during pregnancy and the puerperium. This puts the current institutional maternal mortality rate (MMR) at around 154/100 000 live births. The international target for ‘developing’ countries was to reduce the MMR rate by three quarters by 2015, which would have meant a reduction to 38/100 000 live births. The aim of this dissertation is to examine how the democratic South African government (influenced heavily by global health thinking) has laboured to reduce that statistic. I analyse, using Foucauldian discourse analysis, all relevant health and maternal health policies, procedural documents and reports produced by and for the NDoH in the last 24 years. I draw on Foucauldian concepts, specifically those related to Foucault’s work on governmentality. In this dissertation I introduce a new perspective towards the maternal health practices implemented in South Africa, practices that have generally remained unquestioned, been perceived as self-evident, and thus often escaping critical analysis. Through an analysis of the intended operation of the public antenatal clinic (within the larger institutional system) I show how ‘development’ has come to operate as a truth regime in South Africa – facilitating the introduction of liberal governmentality (including some advanced liberal practices) into public health service provision.

  • Description: The ideologies and structures of the apartheid state have received extensive academic attention, but the legacies of the militarisation of white South African men – a group that exists at a unique intersection of apartheid privilege and exploitation – have not been sufficiently addressed. Even as beneficiaries of apartheid, white men were militarised through structures of coercion and the mobilisation of identity constructions that resulted in the widespread submission to conscription and support for apartheid militarism. This thesis explores the relationship between those militarised identities and the historical processes of apartheid through a consideration of a broad range of white SADF veteran narratives from the Missing Voices Oral History Project archive. This consideration of the role of identity mobilisation in apartheid can shed light on the effect of historical processes of militarisation on white men in South Africa, as well as address the persistence of values and behaviours that may present barriers to the social transformation of South Africa towards a true constitutional democracy. The thesis explores identity in SADF veteran narratives through the application of social constructionism in order to determine the effect of coercive structures and identity mobilisation on individuals, and to gauge the persistence militarised identities after the social and political structures underpinning them had become defunct. The identity content of the narratives is contextualised in relation to structures of coercion employed by the apartheid state and the SADF alongside a consideration of the effect of political transition on veterans. The legacy of the historical environment and the impact of political transition on SADF veterans’ constructed identities is investigated in relation to these veterans’ own visions of their roles in post-apartheid South Africa. Therefore, this thesis endeavours to contribute to the expansion of the field of historical and identity study by considering the construction and renegotiation of military identities that maintained, benefited from, and were exploited by the apartheid state.

The Afropolitan flâneur: literary representations of the city and contemporary urban identities in selected African and transnational texts

  • Description: When an individual walks the urban landscape there is a unique symbiosis between self and city. It is through walking the cityscape and observing the crowd and the surrounding environment that the archetypal literary figure of the European flâneur acts as a mirror of a particular time and space. But how might such a flâneur walk and observe the city in contemporary African and transnational literary texts? I argue that there is a literary re-imagining and repurposing of the flâneur figure which has hitherto not been acknowledged and explored: an Afropolitan flâneur. ‘Afropolitan’ is a term popularised by Taiye Selasi in a 2005 essay to refer to a ‘scattered tribe’ of ‘Africans of the world’ (n. pag.). In this dissertation, the entanglement of the Afropolitan subject and the European flâneur brings together past and present, Africa and the West. I first provide a historical and theoretical framework to illustrate how the flâneur figure ‘migrated’ from Europe to Africa, and how this figure is to be understood as a literary construct, in relation to current considerations of Afropolitanism. I go on to discuss a wide range of texts that engage with Afropolitan flâneurs who traverse cities in Africa (such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Lagos), or global north cities (New York, Paris and London). While some of the Afropolitan flâneurs depicted in these texts are migrants or homeless individuals who struggle to adapt easily to a new environment, others, despite being more privileged, also sometimes experience uncomfortable assimilation in their new or strange city space. There are also those who seem to feel equally at home wherever they find themselves. As these Afropolitan flâneurs walk their way through the urban landscape in the texts under examination, they reflect different ways of being in the city. By problematising the binaries of local/global, national/transnational, black/white, slum/paradise, this dissertation seeks to address issues of belonging or not belonging and gestures towards new ways of understanding what it means to be an African in the world.

  • Description: Psychology is an essentially Eurocentric discipline. In a world that is becoming progressively aware, tolerant and accepting of differences among people, there is growing interest to challenge and amend psychological constructs that are unfairly generalised universally. Literature abounds with appeals for more research to be conducted on non-western cultures so that scholars can be at a better position to ‘decolonise’ the PTSD diagnosis as they will then have an improved understanding of understudied non-western societies. The Eastern Cape province of South Africa is home to the AmaXhosa tribe, the second largest ethnic group in the country. This study seeks to explore indigenous understandings and coping strategies of these people in regards to traumatic exposure. This is done through gaining insights of AmaXhosa traditional healers- Amagqirha (Diviners) and AmaXhwele (Herbalists). A sample of eight participants is sourced from Grahamstown (Makhanda) and the rural areas of Peddie (Ngqushwa). Through the use of two case studies that are presented and open ended follow up questions, the traditional healers relate their perspectives on how they interpret symptoms of psychological trauma and the strategies they employ to facilitate coping/healing of their clients in their context. It was discovered that traditional healers perceived traumatic events as phenomena that befalls only those that are spiritually vulnerable, either due to strained relationships with their ancestors, bewitchment by an enemy or jealous person or simply torment by a wandering wicked spirit. Rituals and practices of how to combat this vulnerability are then outlined.

  • Description: Streets and sidewalks should be seen as public spaces within themselves (Flositz, 2010,iii) this thought triggered an interest in public spaces and what they offer the users and community in which they are placed. This research will examine not only the impacts of the colonialist regime’s planning on Port Elizabeth, but more specifically the segregation and planning of public spaces affecting New Brighton, a predominantly “Black” suburb along the periphery of the city that came to be as a result of forced removals from the city centre (Pettman, 1913: 298). The main argument being carried through this treatise is the significant role that public spaces play in the lives of the urban poor (Dewar & Uytenbogaardt, 1995: 10) especially looking at South Africa and the impact apartheid had on public spaces. It looks at the potential and the ability of the design of public architecture to develop community spaces for all that contributes to a sense of place and pride for the community of New Brighton, Port Elizabeth. This treatise uses the understandings and information gathered throughout the research conducted to develop a suitable design response that generated a significant educational community hub inclusive of a Learning Resource Centre. It will strengthen not only the connection between the various users (races, religions, genders or ages) but also the current segregated and isolated schools within New Brighton’s community. The intention was to bridge not only street and building together but also school and community as a cohesive environment that works together to create a unique experience, exclusive to that area impacted by the context and community in which it sits. Ideas of public space, the in-between and Montessori’s schooling together with the notions of place-making is what ultimately influenced many of the design decisions and the authors theoretical stance. Looking at streets as more than just movement routes or thoroughfares from point A to point B, we can see them as places within a space, where one can experience the world that moves around them. Ultimately the design developed as a response to the identified issues and challenges and created a facility that not only meets the need of the under-resourced secondary schools in New Brighton but also contributes to the development of the public realm of those schools.

  • Description: South Africa was listed amongst the countries with a percentage of students with achievement too low for estimation by “Progress International Results in Reading” in 2011. Meanwhile, there was also an indication that, high school learners in the Eastern Cape Province are highly challenged, as far as their ability to produce speech, as well as the ability to interpret meaning beyond what is literally suggested. Since such difficulties usually pose problems of content understanding, concerned researchers in the field of language took it upon themselves to investigate the underlying cause of the problem, in order to prevent more problems of pragmatics incompetence, such as, problems with social interaction that could retard one’s ability to function independently as an adult. While many studies have been conducted in the area of Pragmatics language competence, this study found it necessary to contribute around this debate. Since the study was two-fold, isiXhosa Home language learners of Grades 10 to 12 were investigated with an objective to determine the extent of pragmatic incompetence and the Teachers were investigated to determine the effectiveness of their teaching of pragmatics language. A number of 108 high school isiXhosa learners, of ages of between 16 and 18 years, from East London Directorate, 36 per Grade, from the three selected schools high schools, were sampled, 36 consisting of 18 males and 18 females per grade from each selected high school. 9 isiXhosa Home Language teachers of between the ages of 45 to 54 years were sampled from the selected schools. This study used an assessment test for the learners and the questionnaire for the teachers, as a means of data collection techniques. The study applied a high consideration of validity as well as of ethical matters in order to ensure the reliability of results. The study found that, isiXhosa Home language learners’ levels of pragmatic competence are high and with the appropriate use of good methods of pragmatics language teaching, learners’ pragmatics competence can develop.This study will be able to encourage syllabus designers to collaborate with subject teachers, beginning right at the inception of the syllabus planning. IsiXhosa language teachers can develop teaching material appropriate for their primary goal, which is the development of pragmatic competence. Further research is recommended to investigate more around this area of study to a point where isiXhosa Home language can be counted amongst the great and valued languages of South Africa.

The anti-inflammatory effects of Sutherlandia Frutescens in a cell and animal model

  • Description: The South African medicinal plant, Sutherlandia frutescens has anti-diabetic, antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties. Many of the mediators of inflammation are also involved in obesity and diabetes. Furthermore, T2D can either induce inflammation, or exacerbate the inflammatory response by maintaining imbalances between pro-and anti-inflammatory mediators. Two macrophage sub-populations involved in the regulation of immune responses have been defined. These are classically activated macrophages (M1) which stimulate inflammation, and alternatively activated macrophages (M2), which show anti-inflammatory activity. Therefore it is hypothesised that S. frutescens can potentially regulate macrophage polarization states which, in turn, influence metabolic immunomodulatory processes. The aims of this study were firstly to identify the mechanisms(s) by which S. frutescens could improve the low-grade inflammatory status in obese and T2D individuals using a transgenic mouse model of obesity, and secondly to determine the immunomodulating properties of S. frutescens in the human monocytic THP-1 cell line. Groups of nine week old male db/db mice were gavaged daily with water (vehicle control), Vildagliptin (10mL kg-1)(positive medication control) or hot aqueous S. frutescens extract at concentrations of 5mg, 50mg, 250mg kg-1 for 4 weeks. Body weight and fasting plasma glucose levels were determined weekly. The potential for hot aqueous S. frutescens extract to lower postprandial hyperglycaemia and promote insulin sensitivity was determined by an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) after a 16 hour fast, and an insulin radioimmunoassay (RIA) after a 4 hour fast before termination. After 4 weeks of hot aqueous S. frutescens treatment the total percentage body weight of 13 week old db/db mice was reduced, but hyperglycaemia was not prevented. Human THP-1 monocytes were stimulated to differentiate into macrophages with phorbol-12myristate-13acetate (PMA) and cultured under pro-inflammatory conditions (M1) or anti-inflammatory conditions (M2). Cell viability and anti-proliferative effects of LPS and S. frutescens extracts were determined. The effect of hot aqueous and ethanolic S. frutescens extracts on M1 and M2 macrophage cell surface markers was investigated by flow cytometry using CD86 (M1) and CD206 (M2). The effect of the S. frutescens extracts on three signalling pathways and a pro-inflammatory mediator activated in an LPS-induced inflammatory response were determined using Western blotting. Changes in mRNA gene expression levels of downstream transcription factors, cytokines and chemokines associated with M1 and M2 polarised macrophages were investigated using qRT-PCR. Both ethanolic and hot aqueous S. frutescens extracts reduced cytotoxicity caused by LPS. S. frutescens extracts alone did not alter cell viability. Furthermore, both hot and ethanolic S. frutescens extracts reduced expression of the M1 marker CD86 and nonsignificantly induced expression of an M2 marker CD206, following LPS stimulation. Following M2 induction, the M1 and M2 cell surface markers were reverted to baseline M0 macrophage expression by both S. frutescens extracts. The S. frutescens extracts mediated immune-regulatory activity through suppression of the pro-inflammatory p38 MAPK and NFκB signalling pathways and regulated apoptosis through the ERK1/2 pathway. The hot aqueous S. frutescens extract exerted anti-inflammatory effects through the IKK pathway and/ or GSK3β signalling pathway. This thesis demonstrates that S. frutescens promotes macrophage homeostasis by maintaining the balance between M1 and M2 macrophages during pro-and antiinflammatory immune responses. The regulation may occur during the activation and polarization process, via rapid deactivation of M1 macrophages and a decrease in need for macrophages to switch to an M2 phenotype. Furthermore S. frutescens is hypothesised to play a role in the regulation of the GSK3β signalling which plays a central role in regulating inflammation associated with pathophysiological conditions such as IR, T2D and obesity via the PI3K/Akt pathway.

  • Description: Students face a variety of stressors, such as personal, career and/or academic/learning concerns and often seek counselling from student counselling centres at their respective Higher Education institutions. Wellness counselling is aimed at assisting clients to prevent illnesses from developing and to create and maintain healthy lifestyle choices. A wellness counselling model includes a step-by-step approach and one step is to conduct a wellness assessment. Several wellness assessments exist but it was found that the assessments were not applicable for the SA student population, and so the Wellness Questionnaire for Higher Education (WQHE) was developed. As the WQHE is a relatively new assessment, there is not much research that has been conducted, specifically there is no research based on the counselling process following the administration of the assessment. Therefore, this study seeks to explore and describe how counsellors administered and utilised the WQHE as part of the counselling process. The research sample consisted of nine participants who administered the WQHE with their clients. Purposive sampling was the non-probability strategy employed, therefore participants were invited to attend an individual semi-structured interview. The implications of the findings are that the WQHE is a useful and viable assessment to assist clients resolve their difficulties and improve their functioning. The WQHE can be administered to clients who present with a variety of presenting problems. The WQHE can be used effectively alongside a variety of counselling theories/frameworks and other psychometric or self-assessments. The administration of the WQHE in itself was found to be useful as it educated and empowered the clients to understand their wellness levels and to provide them with a holistic view of themselves. Furthermore, the clients felt educated to understand their wellness levels and broaden their understanding of the wellness dimensions.

  • Description: Newspapers are key information sources and may influence both public opinion and policy. Previous studies have analysed the portrayal of ecosystem disservices in newspapers, but none have assessed the relative coverage between disservices and services, or how it might have changed over time. We report on the relative frequency and depiction of ecosystem services and disservices in South African, English newspapers over a 15-year period. We used a SABINET search complemented by key-informant interviews with environmental journalists. For each article we recorded if it covered ecosystem services or disservices, the type of service or disservice, and article tone and length. Overall, 2,201 articles were found, of which 25% were on services and 75% on disservices. The number of articles per year declined over the 15-year period for services, but not disservices. The most common services were energy and craft materials, food production, recreation and culture, and disservices were human health, heat waves and floods. Articles on ecosystem services were 25–40% longer than those on disservices. Article lengths on both declined over the 15 years. The greater reporting of ecosystem disservices over services is likely to influence public opinion and environmental decision-making accordingly.

  • Description: By taking Mutare District as its lens to explore the dynamics of rural food security in Zimbabwe, this thesis assesses the role of the state in tackling hunger among its rural populations. It examines the impact of colonial and post-colonial food policy on efforts to combat food insecurity. The thesis explores the uneasy options pursued by rural communities in response to droughts and other threats of hunger. It identifies and ranks crop failure as the chief culprit to the district’s efforts towards food security. The thesis illustrates the contestations between the state and its rural people over which sustainable approaches to adopt in order to end hunger and how such debates continually shaped policy. It grapples with questions about the various understandings of food security advanced by scholars within the rural African context. It demonstrates, for instance, that the post-colonial state inherited an erstwhile crop production structure which shunned food crops in favour of cash crops. There was obvious bias against local preferences for a robust, home-grown food regime which did not put rural livelihoods at risk of starvation. The thesis also argues that food can be used as an instrument of war as evidenced during the liberation struggle when the vast majority of people residing in rural areas, particularly women and children, were pushed to the edges of survival. In addition, the thesis demonstrates that the infamous Marange diamonds turned out to be a curse rather than a blessing due to the state’s lack of transparency in the beneficiation chain. It concludes by a detailed examination of the political economy of food aid, demonstrating why donors have not succeeded for long to combat hunger in the district. In light of this background, the thesis provides a more nuanced analysis of the whole question of rural food security using archival material, newspapers, government and civil society reports, interviews and field observation. The thesis benefits from the use of a multi-pronged theoretical framework to capture the disparate themes that form the bedrock of this study.

  • Description: Psychological contracts, which are made up of employees’ beliefs about the reciprocal obligations between them and their organisation, lie at the foundation of employment relationships (Rousseau, 1989; Schein, 1965). Yet many trends, such as restructuring, downsizing, increased reliance, pressure on cost and high competition, have a profound impact on employees and organisations, leading to an impact on psychological contracts. These trends increasingly make it unclear what the employee and organisation owe each other. The intention of this study is to the relationship between, psychological contract, job satisfaction, organisation citizenship behaviour, and turnover intention in the factory workers of a pharmaceutical manufacturing company based in the Durban area of South Africa. This research made use of quantitative research methods in order to conduct this study using a cross sectional design. A composite questionnaire was used to gather the necessary data for the study using a sample of 63 employees, which constitute 26% of work force working in the factory of a pharmaceutical company, represented by the different departments that operate in the factory setup. The quantitative findings indicate that all three of the measurement scales were reliable due to Cronbach’s alpha coefficient exceeding 0.60. Out of the three dependent variables, psychological contract is found to be highly correlated to job satisfaction. The findings of the study revealed that psychological contract has a positive medium correlation with job satisfaction, and that psychological contract has a medium negative correlation with turnover intention, while it has negligible correlation with organisation citizenship behaviour for the samples. The findings of this research study contribute to the literature available in terms of the construct of psychological contract, job satisfaction, organisation citizenship behaviour and turnover intention. Consequently, the results from this study provided the management of this company with important information on psychological contract and its relationship with work-related behaviours.
