- Description: Urban racial segregation in East London has a distinctive heritage, making the city one of South Africa's most segregated in the pre-Union era. Segregation was initiated by the British military in the then colony of British Kaffraria, and was later enhanced by successive municipal councils. Municipal ordinances ensured exceptionally high levels of segregation in the city during the 19th century. The enforcement of Asian segregation in this era is noteworthy. Urban planning in the 20th century resulted as much from local as national considerations and legislation. Segregation was a reality in East London prior to the passage of the Group Areas Act. The deteriorating social circumstances in the long-segregated African areas in particular receive special mention, as do government attempts to rectify the situation through the institution of state commissions.

- Description: This document should be used by ail of us involved in Education as a basis for discussion on organising education in the Federation. We have pulled together all the relevant information and reccommen- dations which we hope will assist Led- comm, Educators and our constitutional structures in understanding what our tasks are in the locals and in affiliates. The Redcomm agreed that an Education Programme must go beyond being just a number of workshops and seminars. It must be a dynamic process which must contribute to the strengthening of our structures, improving the quality of our debates and promoting leadership of the working class in our struggle for democracy.

- Description: The sugar industry was established in Natal in the mid-nineteenth century. By the 1980s, South Africa produced c. 2 million metric tons of sugar per annum and, directly or indirectly, the industry supported almost one million people. Exports, which amounted for almost half the sugar produced in the 1970s, declined during the 1980s and low prices together with American and Canadian sanctions have forced the industry to consider alternative uses for sugar cane.

- Description: The current economic dispensation has created a dilemma: economic liberalisation has meant that consumers have access to food at lower prices. However, employment has suffered as local producers have been unable to compete, and been pushed out of the market. We are left with trying to balance the concerns of consumers and producers - something that has not yet been addressed in any systematic way. In trying to achieve this balance, closer attention must be paid to the achievement of household food security. The achievement of household food security places several macro-economic and micro- economic processes under scrutiny. As currently implemented, GEAR has failed to achieve its own economic targets, thereby reinforcing poverty. The "Poverty and Inequality" report has identified food security as an important factor to eradicate poverty. What is now required is an implementation forum that deals with the recommendations of that report.

Specimens of a possible third species taken in a dredge at Condor Reef, Caroline Islands are discussed.

- Description: Online version of original print edition of the Special Publication of the J.L.B. Smith Institute of Ichthyology; No. 46 , The Indian Ocean angelfish from southern Africa heretofore identified as Pomacanthus striatus (Riippell, 1836) is Pomacanthus rhomboides (Gilchrist and Thompson, 1908). P. striatus is shown to be the young of P. maculosus (Forsskål, 1775) which is not known from South Africa; it occurs in the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and along the East African coast to at least 13°S. Holacanthus coeruleus Cuvier, described from a juvenile specimen from the Red Sea, is a junior synonym of Pomacanthus asfur (Forsskål), not P. semicirculatus (Cuvier), thus casting doubt on the record of the letter from the Red Sea.

- Description: The igneous rocks which comprise the Etendeka Formation in northwestern Namibia cover an area of 78 000 km² and consist dominantly of interbedded basalts and quartz latites, with minor latites. They are spatially associated with, and intruded by, two suites of dolerites. The rocks of the Etendeka Formation are included in the Karoo Igneous Province but differ from most other Karoo volcanics with respect to their younger age (Cretaceous) and aspects of their mineralogy and geochemistry.

- Description: Information Systems Seminar, Carlton Hotel, Johannesburg, 10 June 1981. Should a Vice-Chancellor be a computer scientist? As I prepared my thoughts to address you this morning it seemed to me that there were three topics of potential interest to this audience on which a person with my background could dwell. 1) Are universities turning out graduates with the right backgrounds (a) to manage companies in which information systems will play an increasingly important role and (b) to drive the information systems effectively? 2) The proper role of the universities in research and development with regard to information systems 3) The effective administrative use of information systems in universities considered as organisations which have as great an obligation to be efficient as businesses.

- Description: The Pomona ring complex consists of several intrusive masses of syenitic magma that define a differentiation trend towards silica oversaturation. Volume relations, sequence of intrusion, and broad chemical characteristics are consistent with the syenites being derived by feldspar fractionation from an immediate syenitic parent. A plug of nepheline syenite and tinguaite dykes indicate the availability of silica-undersaturated magma generally in the Luderitz Province.

- Description: Reactions between the Outer Foyaite magma of the Granitberg Complex and the sedimentary country rocks are striking. At sandstone contacts the magma has assimilated quartz-rich sedimentary material and a suite of pulaskites, peralkaline nordmarkites, and peralkaline granites have been generated by a complex process involving both assimilation and crystal fractionation.
