- Description: The syntheses and photophysical properties of metallophthalocyanines containing Mg2+ and Al3+ as central metal ions and their unmetallated derivative (complexes 3–8) tetra- substituted at the non-peripheral (α) and peripheral (β) positions with 2-mercaptopyridine are reported. The trends in triplet and fluorescence quantum yields are described for these compounds. The complexes exhibited relatively high triplet quantum yields (ΦT) ranging from 0.33 to 0.54 and fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF) ranging from 0.02 to 0.29. Triplet state lifetimes of the complexes were long ranging from 120 to 460 μs, indicating a potential use of these complexes as photosensitizers.

- Description: This work reports on the synthesis and photophysical properties of novel unsymmetrically substituted monocarboxy magnesium (MgPc, 3), aluminum (ClAlPc, 4) and unmetallated (H2Pc, 5) phthalocyanines. Magnesium phthalocyanine (3) was converted into water soluble quaternized derivative (QMgPc, 6) by reaction with methyl iodide. The synthesized phthalocyanines were characterized by IR, UV–Vis, NMR, mass spectrometry and elemental analyses. Photophysical and photochemical studies were carried out in order to determine the potential of the complexes as photosensitizers for use in photodynamic therapy. Triplet quantum yields ranged from 0.37 to 0.40 and triplet lifetimes from 110 to 140 μs in DMSO.

- Description: The Covid 19 pandemic has affected hundreds of million lives and taken over four million lives to date. As a result, governments and policymakers see the need for emergency action to reduce the spread of the virus. In an attempt to contain the virus, governments and policymakers worldwide introduced a different range of prote ction measures and interventions to change their citizen's behaviours , primarily through social distancing, interprovince lockdown, stay at home strategies, and quarantines. The different lockdown measures have created unique and challenging conditions wit h no documented equivalent in the education sector. A significant effect was that many Higher Education institutions worldwide were not ready to switch to online teaching and learning when the governments announced the sudden lockdown. This study discusses the effect s of the Covid 19 pandemic on South Africa Higher Education Institution s , focusing on the historically disadvantaged universities. The study went further to evaluate the readiness of lecturers from selected disadvantaged universities to adopting online teaching and learning by applying the Technology Readiness Acceptance Model (TRAM). Quantitative data was collected through an online questionnaire. Results show that the higher the average of optimism and innovativeness among the respondents' poin t towards the readiness of adopting technology. On the other hand, higher the average insecurity and discomfort show the uneasiness of adopting technologies by the respondents.

- Description: The Bushveld Complex in South Africa has been of interest in various research groups for decades, along with diverse theories regarding its origin, formation, and emplacement. These theories include magma mixing, contamination, and changes in the chamber's ephemeral parameters. Of interest for our current study is the formation of the middle group chromitite layers in the Western Limb. In this research, we aimed to determine the emplacement mechanism of the MG group chromitites by scrutinising the MG 1 and MG 3 layers. In core KD 151, the focus was placed on the MG 3 and MG 1 chromitite layers and their associated silicate rocks; on these regions of the core, time was spent for detailed observations. The differences and similarities of these layers were explored as the study advanced. The objectives were to determine the in-situ or proximal crystallisation of the chromitite by evaluating mineral textures and compositions. This required that we determine the characteristics of the immediate HW (hanging wall) and FW (footwall) to these chromitites, with insights into the relationship that anorthositic zones may offer and examine the PGE profiles of the chromitites in contrasting lithological settings. The sampled borehole was in the Western Limb of the Bushveld Complex; the immediate HW, chromitite layers and FW were divided into sections (2.5 x 5 cm) along selected horizons for a microscale study. The preliminary results of a study on the sub-economic Middle Group (MG) layers within the Critical Zone (CZ), contrasting the MG 1 (Lower CZ) and MG 3 (Upper CZ) chromitite layers of the Rustenburg Layered Suite of the Bushveld Complex, South Africa were analysed. The MG 3 and 1 suites of silicate rocks show disequilibrium textures between the pyroxenes and plagioclase, forming discontinuous olivine rims. These reaction rims are interpreted as products of magmatic aqueous fluid-facilitated reactions with minerals in a sub-solidus state. Deformation of the plagioclase was also noted in MG 1; this fracturing indicates either the transportation of these minerals or compaction by an overlying crystal mush. The MG 3 package of plagioclase, pyroxene and chromite compositions range from An67-78, En71-86 and Cr# of 68-84, respectively. The MG 1 package of plagioclase, pyroxene and chromite compositions are An64-91, En79-88 and Cr# of 70-80, respectively. The Cu/Pd ratio decreases from the base of the FW as it approaches the base of the chromitite, then remains low within the chromitite layer and finally increases upwards in the HW. These trends are observed in both the MG 3 and 1 package, therefore not influenced by the sulphide control. There is a decrease in both IPGE and PPGE upwards as the HW progresses into the chromitite. The FW levels of Ir and Ru increase upwards immediately adjacent to the FW contact, while Pd and Rh concentrations decrease. The whole-rock Mg# indicates a decrease in the MG 3 with a uniform increase in the HW and an erratic upward increase observed in the FW. The chondrite normalised PGE plots show a bell-shaped curve which is evident for the En content of the pyroxenes and the content of plagioclase with the highest values in the chromitite layer itself. The Cr# of the chromite decreases upwards with the highest values along the FW. The Cu/Pd ratio for MG 1 indicates chromitite control rather than sulphide control of the PGE. The whole-rock Mg# decreases in MG 1 with higher uniform values observed in the HW and FW. The geochemical and petrological data from the MG group study revealed that in situ fractional crystallisation seems unlikely as the sole mechanism for their formation in the CZ. A model is suggested in which the migration and transport of a magmatic slurry type suspension with accompanying hydrous fluids would likely have resulted in the emplacement of these chromitite packages along with the PGE mineralisation of the chromitites. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Geology, 2022

- Description: Geography is widely recognised in Namibia as a subject within the curriculum that has been framed for understanding and resolving environment issues and sustainable development. It is in this light that this study examined the inclusion of opportunities for environmental education (EE)1 embedded in the Grade 11-12 Geography curriculum in the Namibian context. This study is undertaken as a case study of two schools in the Omusati region in northern Namibia. It investigated opportunities for EE that are embedded in the Geography curriculum using action competence as a lens to review the curriculum and how teachers are working with it in two rural school contexts. This study employed qualitative methods, specifically semi-structured interviews, an analysis of curriculum documents, classroom observations and focus group interviews. Ethical issues were taken into consideration throughout the study. The key findings from the study are: 1. The specification of EE has mainly emerged as a series of concerns that present as topics to be taught and compared with similar concerns in other parts of the world; 2. Teachers have little experience of what and how to teach and inform environmental education within their classrooms; 3. Learners are not actively involved in seeking and probing environmental concerns or in seeking solutions to these. These findings have been used to make recommendations that teachers: 1. Revisit and review the curriculum documents to carry theory into classroom practice; 2. Encourage learners’ participation to enhance their interest and emotional responsibility in environmental education. The study concludes by calling for further research into EE in Geography. - Description: Commercial property development and investment provide many benefits to individuals and governments around the globe; these include the generation of income for investors, employment, tax revenues, and contributions to a country‘s GDP. Yet commercial property development and investment projects involve construction, economic and management risks. A lack of effective risk assessment and management tools may lead to developers and investors incurring losses. To curtail such losses, this study sought to create a credible management model that can be used to assess and manage risks in Ghana‘s commercial property development and investment industry. An extensive literature review was done, covering all 12 identified study constructs: real estate trends and cycle, construction project management, outside advice/mentorship, spatial development, strategic factors, business management skills, PMBOK, PESTEL analysis, general management skills, governance structures, financial feasibility, professional feasibility, and risk management. Each construct was defined and operationalised. A positivistic philosophical approach was used, and quantitative approach was used to solicit data from the main respondents through the distribution of questionnaires to the target population sample. CB-SEM and SPSS version 24 were used to analyse data, SEM to test the positive relationships hypothesised between the identified variables and SPSS to analyse the demographic data. The major findings are that there is a lack of financial and professional feasibility analysis among respondents along the following factors: the PMBOK, real estate trends and cycles, general management, business management, strategic factors, spatial development, and PESTEL analysis. It was found that these factors have positive and favourable influences on CPDI projects. The study recommends that developers and investors do financial and professional feasibility studies before they embark on projects. This could improve project viability in commercial property development and investment. - Description: This paper draws on two fields, human resources management and entrepreneurship to examine the observed problem of stalled established business ownership even despite favourable Total Early Stage entrepreneurship (TEA) among many nations. The aim of the study was to established the perceptions of entrepreneurs on the influence of human capital on the growth and sustainability of entrepreneurial ventures from the restaurant sector in Cape Town. The study adopted a qualitative research design which was based on interviews to infer the entrepreneurs’ perceptions on the role of effective human capital management to growth of entrepreneurial ventures. Fifteen interviews were conducted and analysed following a thematic analyse procedure. Various themes and sub themes which pointed to the critically of effective human capital management were established. It was found the people possess certain social, philosophical, psychological and ideological attributes that cannot be found from other resources. At the end of the analysis, it was established that human resources are central to the growth of entrepreneurial ventures as they possess certain exploitable entrepreneurial talents, are capable of unlocking the value of other resources and also they are the drivers of growth. Following these findings, it was recommended that entrepreneurs should centralise effective human capital management for growth. In so doing, the study was based on the following questions: What is the relationship between leadership styles of HODs and employee job satisfaction in a Higher Education institution in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. A purposive sampling technique was utilised to select the participants, which comprised 80 academic staff members to which the researcher hand-delivered 80 questionnaires. The study employed a quantitative method to collect and analyse data. The study found that Perceptions on the leadership styles of academic HODs at the HEI are varied. No clear pattern emerged on what leadership styles are prevalent. The relationship between leadership styles and employee job satisfaction appears to be nonlinear. Job satisfaction is a phenomenon that is determined by many factors, not simply leadership styles.

- Description: Stress is a global phenomenon that affects everyone regardless of gender, resources and environment. Although this phenomenon is well researched, teachers’ experiences of stress remains a worrying challenge particularly to schools’ effectiveness. This study sought to establish how monitoring and management mechanism that can assist teachers to cope with stress challenges. These are some of the recommendation: that the school disciplinary committee should be trained in various disciplinary measures that may be implemented in the school to curb learner ill-discipline and lack of commitment, that working relationship should be built between schools and the Department of Basic Education, motivational speakers and educational counsellors should meet with all learners on a regular basis to motivate them to have high desire for and interest in education and to build their self-confidence in the classroom, providing all the schools with healthy environment in classrooms, provision of learning and teaching materials to all schools, schools should set up an effective school-parents partnership in order to promote a safe drug and alcohol free environment, employ enough teachers in all secondary schools and the Department of Basic Education at district level should make room for stress management workshops for teachers.

- Description: Although extensive studies and investigations exist within provincial and national spheres of the craft making and trading sector in South Africa, most of these investigations have aimed to conceptualise craft and the identification of the obstacles, as well as the demurred in the craft industry as whole. However, not much is known about immigrant traders in the African craft market. The objective of this study was to investigate the process involves in the manufacturing and trading of woodcraft, stones carving and beads stores owned by immigrant traders. The study utilised a desk methodology to review literature in Green Market Square, Stellenbosch Craft markets, Hout Bay Craft Market and Franschhoek Craft market. The findings revealed that the art of wood carving uses cutting tools to make wooden figures, ornamental objects and sculptures. The beads are made of fine glass, broken and unusable bottles and other varieties of scrap glass. The finding also revealed that most craft businesses are seasonal the markets do not have shades and unpredictable weather pattern in Cape Town is also a problem, which limits growth prospects.The study recommended that policy makers should developed these markets.

- Description: In South Africa, stagnant economic growth and high unemployment rates have called for solutions from all key national institutions, including institutions of higher learning, to provide solutions. This call must be considered within the transformation discourse that arose in South Africa after the fall of the apartheid regime in 1994 and the need to equalize educational opportunities, reduce poverty and improve lives through education. All this underscores the need for a vibrant motivated, satisfied and dedicated workforce. To explain and understand the phenomena of job-satisfaction several theories have been suggested by Maslow, Vroom, Adams, McGregor, Herzberg, Alderfer’s and other authors, however theories on employee job satisfaction varies with time and place, the old theory needs to be either modified, or replaced with a new model. The study attempt to synthesize the theories of job satisfaction in the Higher Education Institution in Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. The study adopted a desktop that was designed primarily as a descriptive study to source literatures on motivation, job satisfaction, and theories. Theories are neither right nor wrong rather it depends on the context where it is applied. Theories need to be restructured according to the new areas of research in human psychology. The evidence established from this study suggest theories of job satisfaction have to be tested against these emerging factors of positive psychology and their impact on human behaviour at individual, group and organizational levels in other Higher Education institutions in South Africa. Evidence was found that there were many benefits of heritage entrepreneurship which included creating financial viability, creation of employment and improving the environment and infrastructure in communities. It was also found that most of the students held a positive impression of the role of tourist and tourism entrepreneurship in the communities. They held a good image of the tourist and felt that they did not offer any threat to locals. Youth are recommended to adopt heritage tourism entrepreneurship as employment opportunity.

- Description: The paper draws attention to the profit motive in respect of survivalist entrepreneurship at a township environment in Cape Town. Survivalist entrepreneurs have received little specific focus yet they represent a significant portion of economic activities in South Africa townships. Essentially the study considers the problem of failure to grow among survivalist entrepreneurs as reported in related literature. Many survivalist entrepreneurs fail to grow beyond the survivalist phase and there is no consensus on the underlying cause for such a phenomenon. With the Covid-19 pandemic, there is an expectation that survivalist entrepreneurs are likely to multiply owing to the collapse of many small businesses as well as the loss of employment arising from the pandemic. Two specific objective were formulated for the study: (1) to inquire into the business motives of survivalist entrepreneurs and (2) to assess the perception of the survivalist entrepreneurs on the degree to which the small business environment in supportive of motive attainment. The study adopted a quantitative research design based on the selection of respondents using a convenience sampling strategy. The evidence established from this study suggest that survivalist entrepreneurs do not pursue the profit motive significantly but they faced inhibitions presented by the economic environment in which they operate. Government and other stakeholders in the national economy are recommended to develop a suitable legal and institutional framework with strong structures to ensure the growth of survivalist entrepreneurs Keywords: Survivalist Entrepreneur, Township Entrepreneurship, Profit Motive, Small Businesses.

- Description: ZnO nanoparticles were manufactured using microwave-assisted combustion. The structural and morphological properties of the nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Photocatalytic degradation of ortho-nitrophenol (O-NP) in aqueous solution using the synthesized nanoparticles was performed under UV–C irradiation and is reported for the first time. The effect of the initial O-NP concentration, amount of photocatalyst, pH, and salt was investigated during photodegradation. Analysis of the degraded samples using HPLC with UV detection revealed that photocatalysis in the presence of ZnO nanoparticles removed 98% of the O-NP in 5 h. In addition, the photocatalytic degradation kinetics of O-NP were studied, and the results suggest that the data are best fitted to pseudo-first-order kinetic and Langmuir–Hinshelwood models.

- Description: In the process of achieving social equity and local development in Ghana, the empowerment and improvement of the lives of women remain critical factors, because of the existing role women and girls assume in the household and larger communal setting. In Northern Ghana culture and religion have historically side-lined, and in some cases, completely excluded women from participating in the dialogues, economic and political processes that lead to, or facilitate the transformation and development of their households and communities. Even though the media has largely contributed to the discrimination and stereotype of women through how women are represented in mainstream media, the Ghanaian media, in its assumed role as the “fourth estate of the realm” has the power to explicitly advocate and implicitly frame messages which can accelerate the processes of social change, women’s empowerment and social inclusion through the community radio broadcast system (Diedong, 2017: pp. 59, 64). After 30 years of the liberalization of the Ghanaian media and 25 years after the opening of the first community radio station, there have been few studies of how community radio influences women’s empowerment, how it gives opportunity for women to participate in political processes and whether, and how, it strengthens the livelihood capabilities of women. This research was motivated by the empowerment theory and the theory of participatory development communications. The researcher also makes references to feminist media theory in his arguments about the need for women to have access to radio in order to make their own content and also listen to content produced by other women. This study adopted a mixed methods research approach and collected data through programme analysis of the sampled radio stations, focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews. After field data was collected, they were analysed in themes that focus on the objectives of this study, data is presented through thematic discourse methods in order to help the researcher draw conclusions and propose a framework to guide practitioners in the implementation of communication for development projects which use mass media in targeting women for development objectives. My analyses are broadly presented in three chapters with each chapter focusing on one research objective. Based on the data, the researcher discovered that, community radio improves the livelihoods of women in Northern Ghana by providing them with agricultural programming which teaches women new farming techniques and how to practice sustainable agriculture while improving the yield of their crops. The study also found out that community radio provides. opportunities for women to monitor how public funds meant for community development projects are allocated, disbursed, and used for their intended purposes, by creating an avenue of two-way communication and dialogue between women, their district officers, and their elected leaders. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher concludes that, it is important for development practitioners who use mass media to implement women-focused projects to conduct a contextual analysis of the communities, the women, and the identified stakeholders of the intended project because every community is unique. Whereas all women in rural areas are vulnerable and underprivileged. - Description: Coastal communities are some of the most at-risk populations with respect to climate change impacts. It is therefore important to determine the vulnerability of such communities to co-develop viable adaptation options. Global efforts to address this issue include international scientific projects, such as Global Learning for Local Solutions (GULLS), which focuses on five fast warming regions of the southern hemisphere and aims to provide an understanding of the local scale processes influencing community vulnerability that can then be up-scaled to regional, country and global levels. This paper describes the development of a new social and ecological vulnerability framework which integrates exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity with the social livelihoods and food security approaches. It also measures community flexibility to understand better the adaptive capacity of different levels of community organization. The translation of the conceptual framework to an implementable method is described and its application in a number of “hotspot” countries, where ocean waters are warming faster than the rest of the world, is presented. Opportunities for cross-cultural comparisons to uncover similarities and differences in vulnerability and adaptation patterns among the study’s coastal communities, which can provide accelerated learning mechanisms to other coastal regions, are highlighted. The social and ecological framework and the associated survey approach allow for future integration of local-level vulnerability data with ecological and oceanographic models.

- Description: Maritime and fisheries anthropology is a mixture of different themes couched under various theoretical frameworks that straddle the humanities and the sciences. In this subject survey, I explore different thematic and theoretical strands of maritime and fisheries anthropology and illustrate broader changes in this subdiscipline since around the mid‐1990s. I also review developing and future thematic and theoretical research frontiers, and discuss their potential contribution to a public and actionable anthropology/scholarship that can better inform fisheries management and conservation. This is important because in the twenty‐first century, coastal peoples are facing socioeconomic and environmental challenges that are increasingly becoming hazardous. To create a more actionable discipline, anthropology needs to be more accessible, inform innovation, and recapture a more pluralistic scholarship that champions interdisciplinary work. This will require the consilience between the humanities and natural sciences for studying human–marine interactions more broadly and for protecting the marine environment.

- Description: The global accelerating loss of biodiversity is having immediate repercussions for ecosystems and human wellbeing, particularly in areas where people depend intimately on their natural environment for their livelihoods. Dovetailing this loss is the demise of local/traditional knowledge systems resulting from factors such as changing lifestyle and the transformation of local belief systems. While the importance of local ecological knowledge (LEK) for documentation of biodiversity and environmental change and development of management responses is well established, quantitative tools to analyze and systematically compare LEK are scarce. In this research, we analyze the complexity of local ecological knowledge used by respondents to classify locally-recognized marine species. We do so by applying a modified index of taxonomic distinctness to an ethnoichthyological classification in coastal communities in the Solomon Islands. In addition, we assess simple taxonomic diversity (richness in locally-recognized species names) by comparing taxonomies collected in 1992–1995 and 2014–2015. Results indicate that both endogenous (gender, age) and exogenous (proximity to market) factors have discernible effects on folk taxonomic knowledge in the region, with younger respondents and communities closer to a regional market center displaying a significantly lower richness of local species names. Folk taxonomic distinctness was significantly reduced closer to the regional market. The modified index of taxonomic distinctness applied in this research provides a useful tool to explore facets of local ecological knowledge in addition to simple richness of terms, and to compare across different regions and cultural backgrounds. Understanding changes in LEK is important because such knowledge enables communities who are highly dependent on living natural resources to harvest and manage resources more efficiently and also to detect and react to environmental change.
