Electrocatalytic oxidation and detection of hydrazine at gold electrode modified with iron phthalocyanine complex linked to mercaptopyridine self-assembled monolayer

  • Description: Electrocatalytic oxidation and detection of hydrazine in pH 7.0 conditions were studied by using gold electrode modified with self-assembled monolayer (SAM) films of iron phthalocyanine (FePc) complex axially ligated to a preformed 4-mercaptopyridine SAMs. The anodic oxidation of hydrazine in neutral pH conditions with FePc-linked-mercaptopyridine-SAM-modified gold electrode occurred at low overpotential (0.35 V versus Ag|AgCl) and the treatment of the voltammetric data showed that it was a pure diffusion-controlled reaction with the involvement of one electron in the rate-determining step. The mechanism for the interaction of hydrazine with the FePc-SAM is proposed to involve the Fe(III)Pc/Fe(II)Pc redox process. Using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Osteryoung square wave voltammetry (OSWV), hydrazine was detected over a linear concentration range of 1.3 × 10−5 to 9.2 × 10−5 mol/L with low limits of detection (ca. 5 and 11 μM for OSWV and CV, respectively). At concentrations higher than 1.2 × 10−4 mol/L the anodic peak potential shifted to 0.40 V (versus Ag|AgCl), and this was interpreted to be due to kinetic limitations resulting from the saturation of hydrazine and its oxidation products onto the redox-active monolayer film. This type of metallophthalocyanine-SAM-based electrode is a highly promising electrochemical sensor given its ease of fabrication, good catalytic activity, stability, sensitivity and simplicity.

  • Description: FeTAPc-single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) dendrimers are employed as glassy carbon electrode modifiers for the electrocatalytic oxidations of amitrole and diuron. The catalytic rate constants were 4.55 × 103 M−1 s−1 and 1.79 × 104 M−1 s−1 for amitrole and diuron, respectively using chronoamperometric studies. The diffusion constants were found to be 1.52 × 10−4 cm2 s−1 and 1.91 × 10−4 cm2 s−1 for diuron and amitrole, respectively. The linear concentration range for both were from 5.0 × 10−5 to 1.0 × 10−4 M and sensitivities of 0.6603 μA/μM and 0.6641 μA/μM for amitrole and diuron, with corresponding limits of detection of 2.15 × 10−7 and 2.6 × 10−7 M using the 3δ notation, respectively.

  • Description: This work reports on the use of nickel(II) tetrakis benzylmercapto (NiTBMPc) and dodecylmercapto (NiTDMPc) metallophthalocyanine complexes films on gold electrodes for the electrochemical oxidation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol (TCP). Both NiTBMPc and NiTDMPc complexes were successfully deposited on gold electrodes by electropolymerisation. The films were electro-transformed in aqueous 0.1 M NaOH solution to the ‘O–Ni–O oxo’ bridged form. For both complexes, films with different thickness were prepared and characterised by electrochemical impedance and UV–vis (on indium tin oxide) spectroscopies and the results showed typical behaviour for modified electrodes with increasing charge transfer resistance values (Rp) with polymer thickness. The poly-Ni(OH)NiPcs showed better catalytic activity than their poly-NiPcs counterparts.

  • Description: Chemically modified electrodes, constructed by incorporating oxomolybdenum(V) phthalocyanine (OMo(V)(OH)Pc, Pc = phthalocyanine dianion) into graphite powder were used to catalyse the oxidation of cysteine. Solution catalysis of cysteine by oxomolybdenum(V) tetrasulfophthalocyanine, [OMo(V)(OH)TSPc]4−, was also investigated. A considerable reduction in overpotential for cysteine oxidation was observed. Cysteine oxidation occurred at 0.26 and 0.28 V vs. Ag/vbAgCl for catalysis by Omo(V)(OH)Pc and [OMo(V)(OH)TSPc]4− respectively as opposed to 0.77 V vs. Ag/vbAgCl observed on CoPc chemically modified electrodes. The anodic peak currents vary linearly with cysteine concentration in the range 0.02 to 0.08 mol dm−3 and 0.008 to 0.02 mol dm−3 for [OMo(V)(OH)TSPc]4− and OMo(V)Pc respectively.

The aryloxy complexes are substituted at the peripheral (4) and non-peripheral (5) positions with phenoxy (complexes a), 4-tert-butylphenoxy (complexes b), benzyloxy (complexes c) and 4-(benzyloxy)phenoxy (complexes d) groups. The glassy carbon electrode was employed and modified with the tetra aryloxy-substituted titanium phthalocyanine complexes (4 and 5) by adsorption, and with titanium tetraamino phthalocyanine (TiTAPc) by polymerisation. All complexes reduced the overpotential of the nitrite electrooxidation as well as enhanced the catalytic current by a 2 electron process.

  • Description: Catalytic activity of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of cobalt tetra ethoxythiophene phthalocyanine (CoTEThPc-SAM) complex towards oxidation of thiocyanate (SCN−), L-cysteine (CYS) and 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) is reported. The oxidation of thiocyanate occurs via a two electron transfer, whereas L-cysteine and 2-ME require 1 electron. The oxidation of thiocyanate is catalysed by ring based processes, while L-cysteine is catalysed by both CoIII/CoII process and by ring based processes. 2-ME is catalysed by CoIII/CoII process. The oxidation of thiocyanate on CoTEThPc was performed in acid media instead of basic media commonly employed. The reaction order was found to be unity for all the analytes, showing that only one molecule of analyte interacts with one molecule of the catalyst during the rate determining step.

  • Description: This paper reports on the catalytic behaviour of cyanocobalamin (VB12) towards the reduction and oxidation of nitric oxide. When VB12 is adsorbed on glassy carbon electrodes, it catalyses the reduction of nitric oxide (NO) in pH 4 and 9 buffers. In the absence of NO, cyclic voltammetry shows that VB12 is reduced by a one-step two-electron reduction from CoIII to the CoI species. Addition of NO at pH 9 to solutions of VB12 resulted in the splitting of the cyclic voltammetry peaks as a result of a consecutive one-electron reduction of the central CoIII metal in VB12 to CoII and finally to CoI. The catalytic peak for oxidation of NO on a glassy carbon electrode modified with VB12 was observed at 1.21 V versus Ag∣AgCl, at pH 9. The products of the catalytic reduction of nitric oxide include ammonia and hydroxylamine.

  • Description: Three non-peripherally substituted tin(IV) macrocylic compounds, octahexylphthalocyaninato dichlorotin(IV) (3a), octahexyltetrabenzo-5,10,15- triazaporphyrinato dichlorotin(IV) (3b) and octadecylphthalocyaninato dichlorotin(IV) (3c) were synthesized and their photophysical and electrochemical behavior studied. Complex 3b, containing a CH group in place of one of the aza nitrogen atoms of the phthalocyanine core, shows a split Q-band due to its lower symmetry. The triplet state quantum yields were found to be lower than would be expected on the basis of the heavy atom effect of tin as the central metal for phthalocyanine derivatives (3a and 3c). In contrast, 3b shows a triplet quantum yield ΦT = 0.78. The triplet state lifetimes were solvent dependent, and were higher in tetrahydrofuran than in toluene. Cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry of the complexes revealed only ring-based redox processes.

  • Description: In this article the electrocatalytic behavior of an iron(II)tetrasulfophthalocyanine modified carbon paste microelectrode for the oxidation of dopamine (DA) and ascorbic acid (AA) is described. Although the oxidation potential of ascorbic acid is shifted by over 100 mV to more positive potentials, no peak separation could be obtained. This can be explained by the immediate homogeneous reduction of the oxidation product of dopamine by ascorbic acid in solution. However, this reaction induces a shift of the half-wave potential as a function of ratio of concentration of dopamine to ascorbic acid (cDA/cAA). Therefore it was possible to determine the cAA and cDA from this potential shift and the experimental peak current. Detection limits of 4.5±0.2×10−7 and 7.5±0.5×10−7 mol L−1 were obtained respectively for dopamine and ascorbic acid for cDA/cAA>0.01.

Spectroelectrochemistry of the complexes confirmed metal and ring redox processes for TaPc and TiPc derivatives and ring based processes only for VPc complexes.

  • Description: Electrochemical properties of novel, peripherally substituted zinc phthalocyanine complex, octa(4-methylphenylthio-) phthalocyaninatozinc(II) [ZnPc(SC6H4CH3)8] (1a) in DMF solution are presented. This complex showed five quasi-reversible/reversible, diffusion-controlled redox couples. Solution voltammetry of 1a showed little contrast with that of its alkythiol-derivative, octabutylthiophthalocyaninatozinc(II) [ZnPc(SC4H9)8] (1b) in that both thiol-substituents tend to show electron-withdrawing influence on the phthalocyanine ligands; complex 1a showing easier reduction and more difficult to oxidation when compared to 1b and other alkyl derivatives. The voltammetric features of the solid ultrathin films of 1a and 1b, immobilized on gold electrodes via the self-assembling technique, are also presented. Interestingly, the self-assembled films are stable and reproducible and provide good suppression to the following Faradaic processes; gold surface oxidation, solution ion species and underpotential deposition (UPD) of copper.

These CoPcs were π-π stacked onto nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs). The CoPcs, NGQDs and their respective conjugates were used as electro-catalytic probes in the electrochemical oxidation of dopamine. The molecules were adsorbed onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) using the drop dry method, the GCE was used to support those catalysts. The electrooxidation of dopamine was studied using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. An improvement in the sensitivity and limit of detection was observed upon conjugation.

  • Description: The role of the biointerface design towards the development of an impedimetric biosensor for the electrochemical detection of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is investigated. Two novel cobalt phthalocyanines: cobalt tetraphenyl acetic acid phthalocyanine and cobalt tetraphenyl propionic acid phthalocyanine are compared as signal amplifiers and immobilization platforms of the HB5 aptamer towards the electrochemical detection of HER2. In addition, the phthalocyanines are coupled with the metal based cerium oxide nanoparticles. The efficiency of each electrode modification step and the performance of the constructed aptasensors were assessed by impedance spectroscopy. The aptasensors showed very low limit of detection values (all less than 0.2 ng/mL) with high sensitivity and stability. Furthermore, the aptasensors showed very good performance even in human serum samples. Considering these results, the aptasensors demonstrate great potential for improved monitoring of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 levels for the management of breast cancers.

  • Description: The detection of measles-specific primary antibodies (IgG) using electrochemical impedimetric immunosensors is reported. The optimum conditions for electrode saturation were reached after 40 min for 1 μg ml−1 antibody concentrations. Surface roughness using AFM increased with each immobilization or antigen-antibody reaction step clearly confirming the surface modification and recognition between antigen and antibody. The human serum (HS) and new-born calf serum (NCS) spiked with antigen-specific antibody were studied to mimic the real sample analysis. The HS and NCS sera containing antibodies due to measles exhibited correlation between the increasing antibody serum concentrations and the charge-transfer resistance (electrochemically measured). This work clearly showed the potential use of impedance as the preferred electrochemical method for detecting measles-antibodies in label-free manner.

The optimum conditions for electrode saturation were reached after 40 min for 1 μg ml−1 antibody concentrations. Surface roughness using AFM increased with each immobilization or antigen-antibody reaction step clearly confirming the surface modification and recognition between antigen and antibody. The human serum (HS) and new-born calf serum (NCS) spiked with antigen-specific antibody were studied to mimic the real sample analysis. The HS and NCS sera containing antibodies due to measles exhibited correlation between the increasing antibody serum concentrations and the charge-transfer resistance (electrochemically measured).   • Description: Manganese tetraaminophthalocyanine (MnTAPc) has been synthesised. The cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry of the complex have been examined. Spectroelectrochemistry has been used to confirm that the species synthesised in this work contains MnIII, giving (OH)MnIIITAPc. The oxidation and reduction couples obtained from cyclic voltammetry have been assigned to MnIVPc−/MnIVPc2− (couple I), MnIVPc2−/MnIIIPc2− (couple I′), MnIIIPc2−/MnIIPc2− (couple II) and MnIIPc2−/MnIIPc3− (couple III). Electropolymerization of the MnTAPc onto either the indium tin oxide or glassy carbon electrode results in the in the formation of a poly-MnTAPc. The poly-MnTAPc shows improved reversibility at low pH. The poly-MnTAPc electrode was employed to analyse glycine.
