- Description: There are two main co-operative activities that are supported by NUMSA. The one is SAWCO in Natal and the other is the project that is starting here in the East Cape. Does NUMSA have a policy on co-operatives? NUMSA in its Central Committee has taken a decision to support co-ops. But NUMSA is still busy thinking of how we can formulate a policy on co-operatives. We are working towards such a policy. So what is NUMSA's aim in giving support to co-ops? In other words, how can organised workers benefit from the support that NUMSA is giving to these co-op activities?.

Samuel Palmer and Romanticism

- Description: This introduction and ensuing essay are something in the nature of a personal confession. Deemed as such what I have written concerning Samuel Palmer has not, in any way, been written as an exercise, but rather for the purpose of self-edification. This I will elaborate upon while disclosing my motive for writing on Palmer. Palmer's works - when I first saw them - were something of a revelation. They seemed the alpha and omega of my own artistic endeavour. Perhaps the term which best describes the euphoria I felt is 1deja vu1, because although it describes a connectedness of sorts, the words have in their sound an exotic ring. There is in it an implied equivocation - and equivocality best describes my understanding of Samuel Palmer at that juncture. This euphoria I felt dimmed with the realisation that by purportedly claiming, as I was, Samuel Palmer's visionary landscapes as my goal I was treading on sacred ground; I'd arrived, as it were, in another's Paradise. The effects of this upon my own creativity were completely negative. Worse still, I lacked the necessary means to extricate myself from Palmer's paradisiacal visions. His influence was incapacitating and convoluting my own growth. It was obvious then that I had to be rid of Samuel Palmer. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Fine Art, 1985

- Description: The subgenus Otohime of the triglid genus Pterygotrigla is revised and includes descriptions of six new species (P. amaokai, P. draiggoch, P. elicryste, P. hafizi, P. soela, and P. urashimai) and diagnoses of five previously described species (P. arabica, P. hemisticta, P. multipunctata, P. spirai, and P.tagala). All are poorly represented in museum collections and are distributed in tropical waters of the Indian and western Pacific oceans. The subgenus Otohime is unique within Pterygotrigla in having a very long opercular spine and cleithral spines reduced or absent . The species characters used for identification are the number of joined pectoral-fin rays and second dorsal-rays, colouration of the pectoral fin and first dorsal fin, breast squamation, and number of gill rakers and a few other meristic and morphometric features. Otohime species are very similar in morphometry and meristics and the extent of intraspecific variation is indeterminable from the small collections available. A brief discussion of the genus Pterygotrigla is provided together with its current species composition that is thought to include the unresolved triglid Prionotus alepis. A range extension is given for Pterygotrigla macrorhynchus.

- Description: In reviewing the developments in T&G finances over the past eighteen months, we can safely say that T&G finances have certainly stabilized over the period. However, in case we get too excited at this news, a note of caution. While our income from subscriptions has steadily improved, due mainly to the Congress ’88 increase in rate (from R3 to R4); our expenditure has in relation also increased to the point that if we continue with our current expenditure pace of October ’89 and November 89, we will soon return to our previous problem of constant threat of bank overdraft! We are a long way off self-sufficiency and still rely heavily on our overseas funders for assistance in the areas of legal fees and our education programme. This report will focus on both the positive developments in T&G finances over these past eighteen months, as well as the problem areas which we need to seriously tackle from here!
