- Description: The synthesis of zinc-zinc, gallium-gallium and indium-indium ball-type phthalocyanines (complexes 4, 5 and 6) and the surface assembly of the complexes onto metallic gold and silver nanoparticles are reported in this work. Furthermore, their photophysical and nonlinear optical dynamics were investigated. Decreases in the fluorescence quantum yields with a corresponding increase in the triplet quantum yields of the nanoconjugates in comparison to complexes 4, 5 and 6 alone were observed. The mechanism of strong reverse saturable absorption observed was found to be predominantly dependent on excited state absorption. The optical limiting thresholds range from 0.09 to 0.19 J/cm2. Enhanced triplet parameters and nonlinear optical responses were found when the complexes were conjugated to metallic nanoparticles.

- Description: We report here for the first time on the photophysical and nonlinear optical behavior of tetra-substituted alkynyl zinc phthalocyanine and its “clicked” analogue (4 and 5). The compounds exhibited high triplet quantum yields in dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO). Nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were also evaluated for the two compounds at 532 nm and 10 ns in DMSO. We observed two-photon absorption (2PA) and strong reverse saturable absorption (RSA) as the dominant mechanisms at nanosecond laser excitation. The presence of electron acceptor groups fused with triazole linkers in the peripheral positions of 4 provide excellent coexistent features, such as enhanced triplet quantum yields and lifetimes compared to 5. Large third-order susceptibility (2.09 × 10−11 and 3.53 × 10−9 esu) and hyperpolarizability (1.09 × 10−30 and 9.13 × 10−29 esu) were estimated for complexs 4 and 5, respectively.

- Description: Asymmetrical Zn(II) phthalocyanines: mono (4-carboxy phenoxy) tris (phenylazo phenoxy) (1), mono (4-amino phenoxy) tris (phenylazo phenoxy) (2), mono (4-propanoic acid phenoxy) tris (phenylazo phenoxy) (3) zinc(II) phthalocyanines are synthesized and covalently linked to mercaptohexanol (mph) or mercaptopropionic acid (mpa) functionalized dimerized silver-magnetic nanoparticles (Ag-M). Complexes 1 and 3 are covalently linked to nanomaterials via ester bond whereas complex 2 is covalently linked to nanoparticles (NPs) via amide bond. The conjugates of complexes 1–3 with NPs gave higher singlet oxygen quantum than the Pcs alone. Electrospun fibers were fabricated from polystyrene (PS) solutions containing complexes 1 to 3 and their conjugates. The functionalized PS fibers were used for the phototransformation of dibenzothiophene. The increase in photocatalytic properties of phthalocyanines was observed in the presence of Ag-M with 3 alone and its conjugate with mph capped silver-magnetic nanoparticles showing the larger catalytic activity towards the transformation of dibenzothiophene.

- Description: Integration of adsorption and photocatalysis processes can lead to several benefits in water treatment. Integrating well-known adsorbents with photocatalysts ensures that all the interesting components are preserved and helps to overcome the serious downsides of each material and technique when operated independently. In this work, we introduce a new concept of combining both absorption and photodegradation mechanisms using organic photocatalytic adsorbents for water purification. This was achieved by formulating photosensitizing hybrids based on a newly synthesized chloroindium (III) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-acetamidophenyl) porphyrin (InTAAP) compound, anchored on oxygen functionalized coconut shell-based activated carbon granules supports. The fashioned integrated photocatalyst adsorbent hybrid (InTAAP(ACO)) was then studied for their adsorption and photodegradation efficiency using methylene blue dye, where InTAAP(ACO) showed excellent photocatalytic activity compared to ACO and unfunctionalized activated carbon granules (AC), with appreciably high and adsorption properties as AC and ACO.

- Description: This work reports on the microwave synthesis of tetrasulfonated tin phthalocyanine and tetrasulfonated tin α,β,γ-tetrabenzcorrole. The latter was only formed at low ratios (more than 1:8) of 4-sulfophthalic acid to urea. Both complexes are aggregated in aqueous media, but can be partly or fully disaggregated by the addition of Triton X-100. The α,β,γ-tetrabenzcorrole complex has lower triplet life times and yields, while the binding constant and quenching (of bovine serum albumin) constant are lower for α,β,γ-tetrabenzcorrole compared to tetrasulfonated tin phthalocyanine.

- Description: This work reports on the synthesis and electrochemical sensing properties of benzothiazole substituted cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) when π-π stacked on detonation nanodiamonds (to form CoPc-DNDs(ππ). The synthesized materials were characterized using UV–visible, mass, Fourier transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopies as well as transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The electrochemical studies were conducted using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and chronoamperometry. Hydrazine was utilized as an analyte of interest, due to its mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. Glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) were modified with DNDs, CoPc, and CoPc-DNDs(ππ) represented as GCE/DNDs, GCE/CoPc and GCE/ CoPc-DNDs(ππ). GCE was also modified sequential addition of the CoPc and DNDs onto the GCE, represented as GCE/CoPc-DNDs(seq) when CoPc is placed before DNDs on the electrode and GCE/DNDs-CoPc(seq) when DNDs are placed before CoPc, where seq represents sequential. GCE/CoPc-DNDs(ππ) electrode gave better results in terms of limit of detection (1.68 μM), sensitivity (9.59 μA.mM−1) and catalytic rate constant (1.25 × 106 M−1 s−1).

- Description: Zinc phthalocyanine bearing four ascorbic acid units (formed via ester bond between zinc carboxy phenoxy phthalocyanines and ascorbic acid) was synthesized and characterized using different spectroscopic methods. The complex (with or without ascorbic acid) was further adsorbed onto single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and further characterized using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The photophysical properties of the complexes were studied. The synthesized complex showed better photophysical properties when compared to the carboxy phenoxy phthalocyanines alone, this is evident in the increase of the triplet quantum yields (ΦT), triplet life-times (τT) and singlet oxygen quantum yields (ΦΔ). The zinc phthalocyanines bearing ascorbic acid showed improved triplet life-times even in the presence of SWCNTs.

- Description: Several differently substituted Zn(II) phthalocyanines (ZnPcs) were prepared and conjugated to GQDs. The photophysical properties were determined for both the Pcs and their respective conjugates including the fluorescence/triplet quantum yields and lifetimes as well as the singlet oxygen generating abilities. Upon conjugation to GQDs, the fluorescence of the Pcs decreased (insignificant decrease in some cases), with an increase in the triplet quantum yields. However, the singlet quantum yields of the Pcs in the conjugates did not show an increase with the increase in the triplet quantum yields, this is suspected to be due to the screening effect. The cytotoxicity of the complexes in vitro decreased upon conjugation, as a result of the reduced actual number of Pcs units provided in the conjugate for therapy. Upon introduction of cationic charges, the photodynamic therapy activity of the complexes increased.

- Description: The effects of introducing gallium and indium metals into phthalocyanine molecules were investigated via temperature and frequency dependent dielectric spectroscopy. The dielectric properties of Ga(III) and In(III) phthalocyanine pellets were measured at frequencies from 1 kHz to 1 MHz in the temperature range 300–530 K. The temperature dependence of the real part of the dielectric constant suggested that these compounds exhibit semiconductor behavior. The activation energy values were calculated from the Arrhenius plots at different frequencies. A distinct transition in these plots indicated the activation of ionic conductivity at higher temperatures.

- Description: We report on the syntheses of three asymmetrical zinc(II) phthalocyanine endowed with benzoic acid, phenylpropanoic acid, and phenylacetic acid units: (1), (2), and (3), respectively. Metal tungstate nanoparticles, capped with glutathione were prepared and characterized using analytical techniques. Complexes were covalently linked to nickel tungstate (NiWO4) and bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) through an amide bond. The complexes and the conjugates with nanomaterial were evaluated for singlet oxygen generating ability. Complexes 1–2 and their conjugates generate higher singlet oxygen compared to 3 and its corresponding conjugates. The conjugates show degradation of dibenzothiophene (DBT) in fuel with shorter half-lives and greater initial rate values compared to phthalocyanines alone.

- Description: Protected areas are increasingly expected to justify their existence in terms of their importance to society. However, this importance, and the complex ways in which people relate to protected areas, cannot be captured by instrumental and intrinsic value framings alone. Rather, our understanding of the role of protected areas in society needs to take account of people’s relational values about nature. Here we review the literature on values associated with human-nature connection and related concepts to highlight which approaches are currently being used to understand expressions of relational values in empirical protected area research. Our results highlights seven ‘application domains’ for relational values research, highlighting expressions of relational values, and the stakeholder focus of each. Place-focused and psychological theories were most common across these domains. This work represents a first step in developing the foundations of a relational value research agenda in protected areas.

- Description: In the present work, the performance of aptamer and antibody bioreceptors for the detection of the human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER2) cancer biomarker on a glassy carbon electrode is reported. The carboxylic acid group rich graphene quantum dots (GQDs) modified with gold nanoparticles and a porphyrin binuclear framework (CoP-BNF) were used to modify the glassy carbon electrode. The aptamer and antibody were both amine functionalized and attached to GQDs and CoP-BNF through an amide bond. The designed immunosensors and aptasensors in this work were characterized using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The aptasensors, compared to the immunosensors gave better limit of detection values. The aptasensor outperforms the immunosensor in terms of its reusability and storability, while the immunosensor could not be regenerated for subsequent experiments. The potential applicability of all sensors in this work was also investigated, by detection of HER2 in spiked human serum with acceptable results.

- Description: A method is presented for the electrochemical detection of the breast cancer biomarker human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). A glassy carbon electrode was modified using two techniques known as sequential adsorption and electro-polymerization, and the results are compared. The highly conductive polypyrrole (PPy) is used, in the presence of sulfur/nitrogen doped graphene quantum dots (SNGQDs) and a known cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc). The different nanomaterials were used as an immobilization platform for the HER2 specific HB5 aptamer via amide linkage. The nanomaterials were arranged in various ways on the glassy carbon electrode, to investigate the effect of the electrode interface on the operational characteristics of a biosensor. The immobilized aptamer selectively recognizes HER2 on the electrode interface, and this leads to an increased charge transfer resistance (Rct) of the electrode when using ferricyanide as the electrochemical probe. The developed immunosensors showed high sensitivity with the best detection limit of 0.00141 ng/mL. The results showed that the method is simple and sensitive enough for the determination of HER2 in serum samples with good reproducibility and accuracy.

- Description: This work presents photophysical and nonlinear optical properties of a novel Cd 2,3-[octakis{4-tert-butylphenoxyphthalocyanine}] (CdOtBPPc) and compare them with those of Pb 2,3-[octakis{4-tert-butylphenoxyphthalocyanine}] (PbOtBPPc). For both the CdOtBPPc and PbOtBPPc, third order imaginary susceptibility and second order hyperpolarizability values were found to be within the limit set for good optical limiters. The Pcs were embedded in poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PBC) as thin films. The optical limiting values of the Pcs once embedded in film were found to be greatly improved and the limiting fluence of each film was well below the maximum threshold. Both PbOtBPPc and CdOtBPPc showed better optical limiting when embedded in PBC compared to PMMA. CdOtBPPc shows better nonlinear optical behavior than PbOtBPPc in solution and as thin films, even though the former is aggregated in solution. , Original publication is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.poly.2014.07.025

- Description: Kinetic and equilibrium studies for the coordination of cyanide or sulfur dioxide to the cobalt(II) tetrasulfophthalocyanine ([CoTSPc]4−) complex are reported. The equilibrium constant for the coordination of the cyanide under pH 11 conditions and an oxygen atmosphere, and the formation of [(CN−)2Co(III)TSPc]5− species, was found to be 2.1×101 dm3 mol−1 and the rate constant, kf was found to be 7.4 dm3 mol−1 s−1. Similarly, the coordination of SO2 to [CoTSPc]4− occurred with an equilibrium constant of 8.7×101 dm3 mol−1 and a rate constant of 2.1×102 dm3 mol−1 s−1, at pH 11. These rate and equilibrium constants represent the coordination of the second cyanide or sulfur dioxide ligands to the [CoTSPc]4− species. Coordination of the first ligand occurred faster than that of the second ligand in both cases. The coordination is accompanied by the oxidation of the central Co(II) metal with the formation of a Co(III) tetrasulfophthalocyanine species.

- Description: Conjugates of zinc tetracarboxy phthalocyanine (ZnPc(COOH)4) with CdTe@ZnS–GSH quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized and characterized by several techniques including X-ray powder diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. There was an observed decrease in both the fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes of the quantum dots when they were linked or mixed with ZnPc(COOH)4 due to Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). The FRET behavior of CdTe@ZnS–GSH–ZnPc(COOH)4 conjugates was compared to that of CdTe@ZnS–GSH–ZnPc(COOH)8. Higher FRET efficiencies were observed for CdTe@ZnS–GSH–ZnPc(COOH)4-mixed or CdTe@ZnS–GSH–ZnPc(COOH)4-linked compared to the corresponding CdTe@ZnS–GSH–ZnPc(COOH)8-mixed or CdTe@ZnS–GSH–ZnPc(COOH)8-linked. Also CdTe@ZnS–GSH–ZnPc(COOH)4-mixed (containing coreshell QDs) showed higher FRET efficiency than CdTE–TGA–ZnPc(COOH)4-mixed containing core QDs. The FRET efficiencies were found to be 63% and 59% for the CdTe@ZnS–GSH–ZnPc(COOH)4-linked and CdTe@ZnS–GSH–ZnPc(COOH)4-mixed samples, respectively.
