Women leadership: a case study in the Otjozondjupa Region, Namibia

  • Description: Empowerment of women in leadership and in particular, school leadership has been the focus of the Namibian government and the country since independence in 1990. Different policies and laws, post‐independence, make provision for women empowerment and leadership in a range of organisations and institutions throughout the country. However, reports on gender equity in leadership positions suggest that Namibia is not really moving towards these policy goals at a sufficiently quick pace. A lot still needs to be achieved in terms of transforming the gender stereotyping in Namibia, which still suffers from the legacy of gender discrimination of the apartheid era. Modern‐day academic authors and journalists portray an increasing interest in an awareness of the advantages of women leadership. Women are increasingly perceived to have leadership styles more suitable for contemporary conditions than men. It is against this backdrop that this study sought to investigate women leadership in the Otjiwarongo circuit in the Otjozondjupa educational region in Namibia. The study used a qualitative, interpretive research paradigm. It adopted a case study approach. The primary participants consisted of four women principals in the Otjiwarongo circuit and the secondary participants included four women education officers from the same circuit. Semi‐structured interviews, a focus group interview and observation were applied as methods for collecting data and the data collection period was just over six weeks. Data analysis was done through coding and identification of categories. The findings revealed that women principals possessed the qualities of commitment, good communication and are passionate about their work, which are qualities normally associated with effective leadership. In terms of their role in their schools, they emerged as democratic leaders who involved all stakeholders in the decision making process through consensus. In addition, they demonstrated distributive and servant leadership in their interactions with stakeholders. The main challenge to the leadership position of these women principals seemed to be the stereotypical view held, that as women, they had to work twice as hard as men at leading schools. The study recommended that people oriented leadership styles, such as the ones enacted by the women principals in this study, are highly recommended for effective leadership in the 21st century.

  • Description: Contextualising my research within the Eastern Cape as a descendant of 1820 settlers, I question the modalities of historical recollection by introducing memory as a viable mode of archival production alongside that of the archive. Through interrogating Eastern Cape archival institutes and employing an autoethnographic approach to my familial archives, I show that archival curation affects the gaps, schisms, and interpretations of archives as much as the ‘unreliability’ of memory. I rely on definitions from Jacques Derrida and literature from Achille Mbembe and Verne Harris, as well as reflexive methodologies, to engage the ways of remembering the past and methods of storytelling. With this undertaking, I expose the aporias within archival processes. This written component is part of broader research that encompasses theoretical study and a practice-based Fine Arts research project culminating in an exhibition that shares themes of memory, archive, trauma, and curatorial and personal heritage management.   • Description: This report on the diatoms (Bacillariophyta) of the Sundays and Great Fish rivers is divided into two sections. In Volume 1 the taxonomy of the diatoms from these two river systems is examined. A total of 331 taxa were studied, of which 5 are described as new species. Two taxa are given new names, since they were previously known under later homonyms. Twenty seven taxa were recorded for the first time from South Africa, while a number of species are given amended descriptions in the light of fresh information obtained concerning them. A few taxa (chiefly South African forms) have been united with previously described taxa. For the remainder of the taxa mentioned in the text, comments are passed with regard to their taxonomy and dimensions, based on facts gained through literature surveys and personal observations of the relevant taxa. As far as possible all taxa examined in Volume 1 are illustrated, and these illustrations are presented in Volume 3 of this study. Volume 2 deals with the ecology of the diatoms in the Sundays River. Special emphasis is laid on relating the composition of the diatom associations at the selected stations to the ambient salinity and ionic composition of the water. A new index, the Salinity Tolerance Index (STI), is proposed to summarize by means of a numerical value the information obtained from the analysis of a diatom association with respect to the character of the component taxa, and to indicate whether the association is derived from a freshwater, brackish water or marine source. The efficacy of the STI is evaluated in the text. The effect of the geological formations of the Sundays River valley and the underground waters emanating from them is discussed in the text. The consequences of a severe drought in the lower Sundays River, including hypersaline water in the upper estuary, on the diatom flora are also investigated.

  • Description: This report contains the results of some ecological and systematic studies on the diatoms from the Vaal Dam catchment area in the Transvaal, and the Bloukrans River in the Eastern Cape Province. In Part 1 the effects of high concentrations of nitrogen were studied in relation to the composition of the diatom associations. Water samples from four stations on the Bloukrans River were analysed chemically at certain intervals during the months of April and August 1967. Diatom samples collected from these stations at the beginning and end of each of these sampling periods were subjected to a "Thomasson Analysis" to determine the relative densities of the various species in the diatom associations. A statistical analysis of the results reflected a poor but positive correlation between the two variables, i.e. high numbers of nitrogen heterotrophic Nitzschiae were correlated with high concentrations of nitrogen, while low numbers were correlated with low concentrations. Part 2 presents the results of the ecological studies on the diatom associations of the Vaal Dam Catchment Area. In this section the diatom associations from each sampling point or station were subjected to a "Thomasson Analysis" to determine the relative densities of the different species in the associations. Employing already known correlations between environment and association, the results of this analysis were discussed and the ecological conditions for each sampling station were assessed. The associations were similar in composition over the entire catchment area, and indicated on the whole water of good quality. Points of pollution were detected, but were generally localised and the effects of the pollution were soon removed. Only the Waterval River showed evidence of more constant pollution. The associations provided evidence for some seasonal variation in their composition. Finally in Part 3 the systematics and taxonomy of the diatoms in the Vaal Dam catchment area are discussed. References are made to the original and more recent descriptions of each species found in this study, and a list of synonyms is given wherever 'possible. Comments on the systematics, taxonomy and autecology of each species are given, and the distribution of the species in South Africa and the Vaal Dam catchment area is discussed. A number of species, varieties and forms have been recorded for the first time in South Africa. During the course of this study 20 species have been described as new to science; the descriptions of some have been published, while the descriptions of the others will be published formally in the future. All species described as new or having interesting features are illustrated in the plates.

  • Description: Purpose: Consumers make decisions based on multiple factors that influence their decision-making process. These decisions can be influenced by deep personal reflection to the simple impulsive purchase done to fulfil a need or want. This research study explored the relationship between the resource-based view and the factors considered by parents when selecting a school for their child/children. The Valuable, Rare, Imitable and Organized (VRIO) framework as developed by Barney, J. (1991) outlines the framework through which an organisations resources can be assessed in terms of their potential competitive advantage. The research study was interested in understanding how an educational institution can identify and then leverage its resources to create a competitive advantage. Methodology: Each family that has one or more child enrolled at St Stithians College, which is a private school in Gauteng, South Africa, was invited to participate in the study. This represented a potential population size of 1 700 families, however a sample of 334 was used. The educational institution caters to both boys and girls from Grade R to 12 (Matric). Each family was requested to participate in the study as they had already chosen to have at least one child enrolled. A self-administered close-ended questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection and the questionnaire was broken into two sections. Section A focused on building a profile of the respondent while section B assessed the level of influence the factors had on a parent’s decision. Section B’s questions were structured as Likert-Scale questions requiring a response between 1 and 5, with 5 being the highest influence, and 1 being the lowest. The responses to the questions were then grouped into the factors they spoke to and the average results per factor were assessed via an ANOVA table to test the null hypothesis that parents do not consider factors when choosing a school for their children. Findings: As a paper, this study set out to discover what the competitive advantage was of a private education institution in South Africa. It did so by identifying what the key factors were when parents selected the school of their choice and then analysed these findings against the resources of the given institution. The ANOVA table analysis of the responses identified that parents do consider factors and that the factor that they were most influenced by was convenience factor, represented by location of the institution and the distance to it. While there are multiple private education suppliers in South Africa, no other provider has the location that St Stithians College has, and as such, its location is its competitive advantage. Significant: This research study will expand the existing but limited competitive advantage body of knowledge in the South African education sector. South African educational institutions will be able to develop similar studies which will then assist in identifying their own competitive advantages. This can better enable education providers to entice consumers to their education services.

  • Description: In a world of economic uncertainty and manifold social problems, South Africa has its own unique challenges of low economic growth, persistent budget deficits that produce increasing government debt and the highest level of economic inequality in the world. The history of injustice and economic marginalisation and the failure of the economy to provide inclusive growth drives an urgent need to address economic inequality through tax policy, placing ever more focus on wealth taxes as a possible solution. There is a hope is that taxing the wealthy may provide the opportunity to redistribute desperately-needed resources to those denied the opportunity to build wealth and who are trapped in the cycle of poverty. Yet, as appealing as a new wealth tax may seem, the introduction of such a tax carries with it a range of risks, not all of which are known. Of great concern is the possible effect on the economy, which, in its vulnerable state, cannot afford any loss of capital and investment. Very little research has been done on wealth tax in the South African context and there is a dearth of literature focusing on the views and perceptions of the wealthy individuals themselves. This qualitative study investigates the merits and disadvantages of a new wealth tax and seeks to identify any unintended consequences that could result from the implementation of a new wealth tax in South Africa, drawing from historical and international experience and primary data obtained from interviews with individuals likely to be affected by such a tax. Having explored the literature and international experiences with wealth tax and having probed the thinking of wealthy individuals who would be the payers of a wealth tax, the study finds that a new wealth tax may contribute towards the progressivity of the tax system, but it is doubtful whether such a tax would provide a sustainable revenue stream that would be sufficient to address economic inequality and there is a risk of causing harm to the economy. Recognising that the motivation for wealth taxes is often driven more by political argument and public perception than by rational quantitative analysis, the study also anticipates the introduction of a new wealth tax and suggests guidelines for the design of such a tax within the framework for evaluating a good tax system. This study informs the debate on wealth taxes in South Africa and contributes to the design of such a tax, should it be implemented.

  • Description: This study involves an investigation into reasons why pupils continue with mathematics after Std 7. The sample, consisting of Std 8 and Std 10 mathematics pupils at six academic, English-medium high schools in Port Elizabeth, had to complete a short questionnaire during the third term of 1985. It was found that most pupils continue with mathematics because of requirements for certain post-matric courses, to improve their career options and for other reasons classified in this investigation as "extrinsic", i.e. reasons that are not directly related to the nature of mathematics. An attempt is made to determine the extent of the pupils' knowledge of the nature of mathematics. Questions relating to the nature of mathematics are poorly answered by almost all of the pupils, thereby suggesting that this aspect of mathematics is sadly neglected in mathematics courses. The suggestion is made that this lack of knowledge of the nature of mathematics is linked to pupils' decisions to continue with the subject. The conclusion is drawn that unless more attention is given to conveying to pupils something of the nature of mathematics, there will be an increasing proportion of pupils who choose to continue with mathematics for the "wrong" reasons. This, in turn, has possible negative implications for mathematics education in general. Attention is also paid to differences re the above in respect of groupings based on standard, mathematical grade, sex, mathematical achievement and type of schooling. Although no conclusive findings are made other than with regard to specific questions, enough evidence of differences in certain of the groupings is produced to warrant further investigation

Performance of defensive shares on the JSE during financial crisis: evidence from analysis of returns and volatility

  • Description: This study analyses whether historically defensive sectors on the JSE have – with respect to the market – proven to be defensive during the recent global financial crisis. By withstanding the shocks of market volatility, defensive industries (such as pharmaceuticals and consumer staples) are renowned for their consistent performance throughout the business cycle. Using daily data for the period 2000–2009, the study compares the descriptive statistics of sector returns before and during the crisis. The volatility of each sector relative to the market index is calculated using the CAPM beta and a simplified volatility ratio. The same comparison is extended to the conditional volatilities of each of the sectors, which is estimated using the GARCH model and two of its extensions: the EGARCH and GJR GARCH models. While no sector experienced a positive mean return during the financial crisis, Healthcare, Consumer Goods, Consumer Services and Industrials all proved less volatile than the market. Surprisingly, Telecommunications proved more volatile than the market and experienced leverage effects during the financial crisis. Since the timing of a recession is difficult to predict, defensive securities were found to be a useful investment tool for protection against adverse movements in the stock market.

The power of investor sentiment: an analysis of the impact of investor confidence on South African financial markets

  • Description: Whether investor sentiment has any authority over financial markets has long been a topic of discussion in the field of finance. This study investigates the relationship between investor sentiment and share returns in South Africa. Determining this relationship will add to the existing work which has documented important determinants of share returns on the stock exchange in South Africa, as well adding to the inconclusive link between sentiment and the South African financial markets. Does sentiment influence share returns or do share returns influence sentiment? Using quarterly data for the period 1996-2010, the study makes use of the FNB/BER Consumer Confidence Index as a proxy for investor sentiment, and the FTSE/JSE All Share Index to represent the South African financial markets. A regression analysis was conducted along with granger-causality tests, impulse response functions and variance decompositions in order to determine the nature of this relationship. The results showed that investor sentiment has a statistically significant relationship with share returns in South Africa. However, sentiment is only able to account for a very small portion of the variation in returns, with returns able to account for a larger portion of the variation in sentiment. Therefore investor sentiment is not a suitable predictor of share returns in South Africa. In addition, granger-causality tests indicate that returns are actually the leading indicator, suggesting that changes in South African investors’ confidence levels occur following changes in the state of the JSE. The limitations of the study include the infrequent nature of the sentiment measure used, thereby failing to capture important changes in sentiment and their immediate impact on financial markets. In addition, the sentiment of foreign investors must be taken into account due to the large foreign investment in the JSE.

  • Description: There is an increased prevalence of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa and globally. In South Africa, the prevalence of type 2 Diabetes mellitus is currently estimated at 9.0% in people aged 30 and older and is expected to increase. Diabetes-related complications result in acute alterations in the mental state due to poor metabolic control as well as greater rates of decline in cognitive functioning with age, higher prevalence of depression and increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia in older adults and possibly contributes to 60 - 70% of cases. Alzheimer’s disease remains incurable, its progression inevitable with the currently available symptomatic therapies being palliative while the treatment of diabetes relies on insulin preparations and other glucose-lowering agents. Current treatment options have numerous side effects such as hypoglycaemia, diarrhoea, weight gain and abnormal liver function. This has geared the investigation of new generations of small molecules which exhibit improved efficacy and safety profiles. On this basis, several studies have shown that thiazolidinediones and their corresponding derivatives exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activities including anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities. Furthermore, recent evidence from experimental, epidemiological, and clinical studies highlight the utility of antioxidants for treating diabetes and its complications. Interestingly, there is increasing evidence that links diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease due to their pathophysiology and suppressing glycaemia has been shown to be beneficial in Alzheimer’s disease treatment. Accordingly, the aim of this study, was to evaluate the anti-diabetic and anti-Alzheimer’s properties of four novel synthesized thiazolidinedione-derivatives owing to their antioxidant properties. Methods The aim of this study was achieved through performing ferric reducing antioxidant power activity, 2,2’-Diphenyl-1-Picry Hydrazyl radical scavenging activity, α-amylase inhibition, α-glucosidase inhibition, aldose reductase inhibition, protein tyrosine phosphatase-1B inhibition, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibition, acetylcholinesterase inhibition, matrix metalloproteinase-1 inhibition, and β-amyloid aggregation inhibition assays. In addition, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ activation was performed through docking studies. To establish physicochemical properties of TZD derivatives investigated, further in-silico studies were done using SwissADME tools. Results To this end, in-vitro and in-silico studies were successfully performed. In-silico ADME profiling predicted these derivatives to be drug-like with moderate to good solubility in the GI and not blood-brain barrier permeable. Furthermore, docking of these molecules against PPARγ predicted a similar mode of action to that of thiazolidinediones using Rosiglitazone as the standard drug with TZDD2 and TZDD4 forming equivalent conformations to that of Rosiglitazone in the same binding site and TZDD3 having an equivalent LBE to that of Rosiglitazone (-8.84 and -8.63kcal/mol respectively). In-vitro evaluation predicted a moderate antioxidant activity with TZDD2 and 3 exhibiting the highest FRAP activity and DPPH radical scavenging activity. Furthermore, enzymatic inhibition assays showed a relative inhibition activity with TZDD3 exhibited > 100% inhibition in concentrations ≥ 30 μg/mL and TZDD1, 2 and 4 exhibited ≥ 50% inhibition activity in all the concentrations (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 μg/mL) in the α-amylase inhibition assay. Similarly, in the α-glucosidase inhibition assay, all the four derivatives exhibited a concentration dependent activity with TZDD3 showing the most activity. All the four derivatives exhibited ≥ 30% inhibition in the aldose reductase inhibition assay except TZDD1 at 10 μg/mL. TZDD4 exhibited a concentration dependent inhibition activity in the protein tyrosine phosphatase-1B inhibition assay. Interestingly, TZDD3 showed a decreasing inhibition activity as its concentration increased from 10 μg/mL through to 50 μg/mL. In the dipeptidyl peptidase–4 inhibition assay, TZDD2 and TZDD4 exhibited ≥ 20% inhibition activity across all the concentrations and in the acetylcholinesterase assay, TZDD1, 3 and 4 exhibited ≥ 25% across all the concentrations. Interestingly, in the matrix metalloproteinase-1 inhibition assay, some of these derivatives exhibited partial activation activity and partial inhibition with TZDD1 showing activation in concentrations 10 and 20 μg/mL and inhibition in concentrations 30, 40 and 50 μg/mL. TZDD4 showed activation in all the concentrations. In the β-amyloid aggregation assay, all the four derivatives showed inhibition activity ≥ 10% except TZDD1 at 50 μg/mL. Conclusions Diabetes mellitus and Alzheimer’s disease are a type of pathology of global concern, and several researchers worldwide have strived to search for novel therapeutic treatments and prevention for diabetes as well as Alzheimer’s disease. Recent studies provide a direct link v between diabetes mellitus and Alzheimer’s disease, and the need to find novel drugs that can mitigate these two is of increasing interest. In our search for antidiabetic and anti-Alzheimer’s activity, TZD derivatives (TZDD1, TZDD2, TZDD3 and TZDD4) exhibited good antioxidant activity, anti-hyperglycaemic activity and a relatively promising anti-Alzheimer’s activity. This was observed from the in vitro evaluation performed which included α – amylase, α – glucosidase, aldose reductase, PTP1B, DPP4, amyloid β aggregation, and AChE inhibition assays. Furthermore, docking of the derivatives against PPARγ predicted a similar molecular interaction to that of thiazolidinediones using Rosiglitazone as the standard drug. Furthermore, in silico ADME profiling predicted the derivatives to have moderate to good solubility in the GI (good GI bioavailability), and also exhibited excellent drug likeness. However, they are predicted not permeate the BBB.   • Description: The use of controlled release dosage forms has increased significantly in recent years as they result in increased patient compliance and higher therapeutic efficiency. This research focused on the development of a once daily dosage form that could be used for the treatment of hypertension. Both a separate sustained release dosage of metoprolol tartrate and a combination dosage form that included both an immediate release hydrochlorothiazide and a sustained release metoprolol component, were developed and evaluated. A matrix tablet, consisting of an ethylcellulose ranulation of metoprolol tartrate compressed into a hydrophilic hydroxypropyl methylcellulose polymer matrix, effectively sustained metoprolol release over a 22-hour experimental period. A multiparticulate combination dosage form that consisted of six coated mini matrix tablets of metoprolol and a powder blend of hydrochlorothiazide packed into a gelatin capsule, displayed zero order release kinetics for metoprolol release over 22 hours (r2=0.9946). The release of hydrochlorothiazide was found to be comparable to that of a commercially available product tested. Differential Scanning Calorimetry was used to identify possible incompatibilities between MPTA and excipients initially, and long term stability testing was used to assess to behaviour of the dosage form. Dissolution testing of the dosage forms was performed using USP Apparatus III, which was found to be more discriminating between the batches assessed. Dissolution curves were evaluated for similarity and difference using f1 and f2 fit factors. Samples were analyzed using a high performance liquid chromatographic method that was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of the compounds of interest. Various factors influencing drug release from the developed dosage forms were assessed and recommendations for further optimization of the formulation are made. Factors evaluated included the quantity of granulating fluid, matrix polymer content, drug load and process variables, including drying time and compression force. The influence of various coating levels on drug release was assessed and none of the levels assessed were found to adequately retarded drug release over a 22-hour period. Combinations of tablets coated to different levels allowed for the successful development of a sustained release metoprolol component, which could be included into the combination dosage form.

  • Description: Through an exploration of both sculptural and thought processes undertaken in making my Masters exhibition, ‘Hippocampus’, I unpack some possibilities, instabilities, and limitations inherent in representation and visual perception. This thesis explores the Hippocampus as image (seahorse) and concept (brain-structure involved in cognitive mapping of space). Looking at Gilles Deleuze’s writings on representation, I will expand on the notion of the map as being that which does not define and fix a structure or meaning, but rather is open, extendable and experimental. I explore the becoming, rather than the being, of image and concept. The emphasis here is on process, non-representation, and fluidity of meaning. This is supportive of my personal affirmation of the practice and process of art-making as research. I will refer to the graphic prints of Maurits Cornelis Escher as a means to elucidate a visual contextualization of my practical work, particularly with regard to the play with two- and three-dimensional space perception. Through precisely calculated ‘experiments’ that show up the partiality of our visual perception of space, Escher alludes to things that either cannot actually exist as spatial objects or do exist, but resist representation. Similarly I will explore how my own sculptures, although existing in space resist a fixed representation and suggest ideas of other spaces, non-spaces; an in-between space that does not pin itself down and become fixed to any particular image, idea, objector representation.

  • Description: Since the publication of Ruth Finnegan’s influential Oral Literature in Africa, way back in 1970, scholars have been paying earnest attention to oral traditions on the African continent. That seminal book pointed out to Africanist scholars the need to urgently collect and document the oral literatures of their various ethnic groups before they die out. However, it is the verbal arts of the major ethnic groups on the continent that very often benefit from this collection and documentation, as it were. Therefore, this study sought to examine the oral poetry of the Ịzọn, a minority ethnic nationality, located in the oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The study employed unstructured interviews and participant observations to collect the data for the research. The transcribed and translated data was examined through three eclectic theories to the study of folklore: Russian formalism, performance and functionalism. The study found out that Ịzọn oral poetry is a combination of songs and one person’s praise chants. Moreover, it revealed that praise chanting is a recent practice amongst the Ịzọn that was introduced into Ịzọnland by Chief Adolphus Munamuna from the Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria. Furthermore, the study established that oral poetry plays important roles amongst the people. Besides, it ascertained that the performance of some sub-categories of the poetry is highly dramatic and theatrical. It also discovered that stylistic techniques such as formula, parallelism, proverb, ideophone, praise title, metaphor, repetition, alliteration, assonance, vowel lengthening, amongst others, give the poetry the quality of “literariness.” In addition, the study found out that the poetry, like oral poetry in other ethnic groups, demonstrates the three qualities of change, adaptability and survival. The study has contributed to existing scholarship on African oral traditions in the sense of collecting, documenting and generating awareness on Ịzọn oral poetry, most importantly pointing out the existence of praise chanting amongst a people who had no such culture and the conditions that gave rise to that practice.

  • Description: This study was completed as part of a project exploring social inclusion and exclusion in South African higher education. In a globalised world, the achievement of a qualification from an institution of higher education is increasingly key to finding any sort of employment. This is particularly the case in South Africa where employment amongst black citizens is inordinately high. The aim of the research reported upon in this thesis was to better understand the construct of ‘epistemological access’ (Morrow, 1992), often used in relation to the needs of black working class students entering higher education, in relation to performance data (see for example, CHE, 2016) that repeatedly shows that black students fare less well than their white peers. Following what might be termed a ‘social’ approach to understanding access, this study begins long before most students have even heard of higher education and focuses on identifying the mechanisms that come into play at much earlier level of learning and literacy development. The study outlines the development of ‘ways of being’, or social practices, surrounding learning in a marginalised community in Port Elizabeth, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. This was achieved by means of critical ethnography and it is therefore qualitatively based. The study shows how social structures enable or constrain a child’s school readiness and how they then go on to support or impede progress in school where the language and literacy needed for educational success are further developed. The study therefore aims to allow us to explain global data indicating that the single greatest indicator of a young person’s ability to access and succeed in higher education is the level of education of caregivers in their homes of origin. Examined from a critical perspective (i.e. with a concern for social justice), this study has made use of a framework using social, psychological and linguistic theory and more, particularly, the work of sociologist Margaret Archer (1995, 1996, 2003). The study makes particular use of Archer’s ‘morphogenetic framework’ which allows for an analysis of the way structure and culture impact on a child’s development over time. As I was concerned that my own social status might impact on the understandings I developed as a critical ethnographer, the study acknowledges my own experiences of learning and the way my own family sought to enhance them as enabling. In doing this, the study aims to better contribute to understandings of social justice in South Africa.

  • Description: This study aimed to construct, and implement an in-school "art expression" based programme designed to aid in mitigation of psychological stress, behavioural difficulties, and self-negativity frequently experienced by marginalised children. It was developed for application within schools that cater for children exposed to neglect and/or abuse resulting from poverty in South Africa. This programme outline was developed and implemented through intensive exploration and review of previously effective art therapy, art expressive methods and techniques in similar contexts, together with the knowledge and experience of a qualified art therapist and educational psychologist. Data was collected through open-ended informal qualitative interviews, observations, and photographs of artworks produced during sessions. These were then analysed in conjunction, using the content analysis method, visual interpretive measures and thematic analysis. This enquiry documented the process of art creation through "art expression", and its ability to ameliorate psychological difficulties affecting marginalised children in South Africa. Following the establishment of trust between the researchers and the participants, the results found that the use of different art modalities demonstrated predominantly positive results in varying degrees. It is hoped that this study can be used to further practical interventions of this nature in comparable milieus in South Africa.
