  • Description: The music for the Zande round dance. All the dancers perform the same steps in unison, short quick steps to and fro, turning into file and then facing inwards again, gradually moving around in an anti-clockwise direction. The enthusiasm of the Zande men and women for their Kponingbo xylophone dance has to be experienced to be fully appreciated. The dancers are caught in the swirl of the music and compel sympathetic action from everyone within earshot. The tuning of the xylophone was:- 976, 880, 784, 672, 584, 488, 440, 392, 336, 292, 244 vs. Zande dance with Kponingbo xylophone, 11 loose notes on 2 banana stalks, and hand bells.

  • Description: The drums set the basic rhythm and the song is led by a woman who occassionally breaks off her song to call to her chorus who reply a set phrase and then continue with the song. It is intereting to note that the sticks, which are tapped together, produce the same basic rhythm as that produced on sticks or bottles from Southern Congo right across the continent to the east coast. It can be counted as follows:- ONE, TWO, THREE, one-two: (rest) ONE, TWO, One-two (rest). The Luvale come from the high ground near the source of the Zambeze.

  • Description: This kind of dance they say was first introduced into the district by Yao people about 15 years ago in 1940 when it was originally sung in the Yao language from the Fort Johnstone district. But the Chewa girls liked the dance and made up their own words for it. They reflect a young girls growing sense of responsibility towards her domestic duties.   • Description: The canoes of the Wagenya are large dugouts, often 60 feet in length and about 30 to 50 inches in width. They can hold as many as 70 to 100 paddlers on festive occasions and have been made famous of recent years by their appearance in films such as "Sanders of the River" and "Savage Splendour." The large slit drum was made out of a single log of wood measuring 25" across and 5 feet long. The slit was 4" to 4 and a half wide and 4 feet long. It was insulated from the ground by resting it on an old motor truck tyre which nowadays often replaces the less permanent bands of grass or other fibrous matter which are necessary if the wooden gong or slit drum is to be resound to full advantage. The gong should be supported like a xylophone note at the natural nodes, so as to prevent muffling the sound. The larger slit drum is called Mongungu. The smaller slit drum is called Mongungu Ngole. Other Genya drums wih membranes are called Lotongo Ngoma and Uke, but the wooden gongs or slit drums are the more numerous, being used not only for dancing but for sending messages as well. These items were copied from discs in the Reference Library section of the I.L.A.M. as the original tapes were not available. Consequently disc surface noise is apparent in some places.
