- Description: Background: Feedback proves to be a valuable tool in behaviour change as it is said to increase compliance and improve the effectiveness of interventions. Interventions that focus on decreasing sedentary behaviour as an independent factor from physical activity are necessary, especially for office workers who spend most of their day seated. There is insufficient knowledge regarding the effectiveness of feedback as a tool to decrease sedentary behaviour. This project implemented a tool that can be used to determine this. To take advantage of the cost-effectiveness and scalability of digital technologies, a mobile application was selected as the mode of delivery. Method: The application was designed as an intervention, using the Theoretical Domains Framework. It was then implemented into a fully functioning application through an agile development process, using Xam- arin.Forms framework. Due to challenges with this framework, a second application was developed using the React Native framework. Pilot studies were used for testing, with the final one consisting of Rhodes University employees. Results: The Xamarin.Forms application proved to be unfeasible; some users experienced fatal errors and crashes. The React Native application worked as desired and produced accurate and consistent step count readings, proving feasible from a functionality standpoint. The agile methodology enabled the developer to focus on implementing and testing one component at a time, which made the development process more manageable. Conclusion: Future work must conduct empirical studies to determine if feedback is an effective tool compared to a control group and which type of feedback (between goal-setting and social comparison) is most effective. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Computer Science, 2022

The regeneration of palmiet (prionium serratum) following hydrogeomorphic disturbance: a case study of the Kromme River wetland

- Description: The Kromme River wetland in the Eastern Cape of South Africa occupies a broad valley (up to 350 m wide) with a gentle longitudinal slope of less than 2 % that has been formed by cut-and-fill cycles that are initiated by trunk-tributary interactions. These hydrogeomorphic disturbance events trigger gully erosion and generate sediments, the coarse fraction of which is deposited less than 2 km downstream, leading to depositional floodout features that fill gullies headwards. This process has been occurring at intervals for at least 10 000 years, and as such pre-dates the introduction of European farming practices in the area. Plants that regenerate by colonising these features are thought to have evolved adaptions necessary to colonise intermittently produced bare sandy sediments. This study aimed to examine the regeneration ecology of palmiet (Prionium serratum), the dominant vegetation community within these cut-and-fill wetlands, by relating its regeneration characteristics to environmental factors in a reach of the Kromme River wetland that has experienced a recent hydrogeomorphic disturbance event (approximately 10 years before the commencement of this study). Palmiet was found to be regenerating on sedimentary deposits on beds of gullies and on depositional bars on the margins of gully beds. The large depositional floodout downstream of a large gully also favoured palmiet regeneration, where it was found to be regenerating along not only the active channel, but also along old abandoned flow paths and sometimes areas well elevated above the channel. The geomorphic features that favoured palmiet regeneration were characterised by coarse-grained sediments (mean particle size approximately 310 μm) with low organic matter content (0.61 %), a low depth to the water table and low elevation above the thalweg (mean depth to water table is approximately 0.6 m), and a relatively close distance to the thalweg (< 10 m). This understanding of palmiet’s regeneration characteristics was viewed in relation to existing literature on undisturbed palmiet wetland plant communities and its reported contribution to conditions that favour wetland formation through gully filling, which allowed for the creation of a conceptual model of palmiet regeneration, colonisation and long-term persistence. This model was based on the Fluvial Biogeomorphic Succession concept. It suggests that palmiet’s interaction with the hydrogeomorphic environment throughout the different stages of its life cycle results in self-organising biogeomorphic landforms. Over hundreds of years, the reciprocal interactions between palmiet, sediments and water, fills gullies and restores valley bottoms, ultimately leading to the formation of a wetland landform. It is further proposed that through continued accretion, the geomorphic wetland landscape becomes more and more disconnected from the hydrogeomorphic dynamics of the fluvial system, such that the prevailing conditions begin to favour fynbos establishment, which may outcompete palmiet. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Geography, 2022

- Description: This research was a case study of responsible leadership in a renewable energy organisation in the Eastern Cape. The study aimed to understand and describe how a renewable energy organisation applies responsible leadership to build trust. The four objectives of the study were namely to: (1) describe how the organisation interacts with its stakeholders to build trust; (2) understand how the members of the organisation demonstrate the characteristics of responsible leadership; (3) understand how different stakeholders perceive and experience the interaction of the company with established stakeholders; (4) make recommendations that a renewable energy organisation can exercise the characteristics of responsible leadership to develop its stakeholder engagement framework. In the study the stakeholder theory was applied as the theoretical framework, and the theory encourages organisations to determine the "power, legitimacy, and urgency" of stakeholders with whom they interact. A qualitative approach was used in this study. The data collection method was semi-structured interviews for all 12 participants. Data were analysed through a deductive thematic approach to identify, analyse and report patterns or themes within the data collected. The study showed that the wind farm unintentionally applies some components of responsible leadership among its stakeholders. Openness, transparency, and communication are critical actions that this organisation undertakes to cultivate trust among both its internal and external stakeholders. External stakeholders experience this organisation differently. There are mixed feelings regarding how the wind farm conducts its stakeholder engagement activities, particularly relating to landowners and government institutions. Synthesis and evaluation of the medicinal potential of novel 4-hydroxycoumarin derivatives

- Description: This research has focused on the synthesis and biological evaluation of a broad range of compounds characterised by the presence of the pharmacologically significant 4-hydroxycoumalin scaffold. The compounds were designed to contain additional pharmachophoric centres to enhance bioactivity and generate lead compounds with dualaction potential. The use of 4-hydroxycoumarin as the primary synthon enabled access to various series of 4-hydroxycoumarin conjugates, the reactive 3-position on the 4-hydroxycoumarin moiety being exploited for regioselective construction of the targeted compounds in several steps. Some of the reactants required in the construction of these compounds were specially synthesised and included propargyloxy benzaldehydes, benzyloxy benzaldehydes and 2,3-dihydroxysuccino-dihydride. Overall, eight different families of novel compounds were accessed, comprising conjugates of 4-hydroxycoumarin with bisethylidenesuccinohyrazide, trifluoroacetamide, amino, benzyloxyphenyl-iminoethyl, benzylidenehyrazinyl-thiazoyl, benzylidenehydrazonoethyl, propargyloxybenzylidenehydrazonoethyl and phenylacryloyl moieties using protocols that required minimal work-up and purification. The eighty novel compounds synthesised in the study were fully characterised using HMRS and advanced NMR techniques. Cytotoxicity, HIV-1 IN and PR inhibitory, and antitrypanosomal, antimalarial and anti-Mtb assays were conducted on the synthesised coumarin derivatives. Several compounds exhibited activity against HIV-1 IN, the most potent being a bis-ethylidenesuccinohyrazide with an IC50 value of 3.5 μM. Various compounds exhibited anti-malarial activity (% pLDH viability in the range 62-77%), anti-trypanosomal activity (the most potent with an IC50 = 0.9 μM against T.b. brucei) and a measure of anti-Mtb activity. Apart from two chalconyl derivatives, none of the synthesised compounds exhibited significant cytotoxicity. Conflicting results were obtained from the in silico docking studies; in some cases supporting the observed in vitro assay data while, in others, exhibiting no correlation. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Chemistry, 2020

Alcohol use among women attending antenatal care in Buffalo City, Eastern Cape

- Description: Alcohol use during pregnancy is known to cause neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring, known as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). High prevalence of FASD has been observed in certain parts South Africa, but many areas of the country remain unstudied, and factors contributing to drinking among pregnant women are poorly understood. This study surveyed 1099 women attending antenatal care at public primary healthcare facilities in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Area in the Eastern Cape. Data was collected using the Alcohol Use Identification Test, a 10-item self-report measure of drinking behaviour in isiXhosa, English, and Afrikaans. Factors associated with alcohol use, risky drinking, binge drinking, and hazardous/harmful drinking were identified using logistic regression. A minority of the sample reported alcohol use (64%). Among those reporting alcohol use, most reported occasional binge drinking (63%) and met criteria for risky drinking (59%) and hazardous/harmful drinking (52%). Living with a regular drinker was significantly associated with alcohol use (OR 1.98, 95% CI 1.51 – 2.58), risky drinking (OR 2.03, 95% CI 1.49 – 2.76), binge drinking (OR 2.21, 95% CI 1.64 – 2.97), and hazardous/harmful drinking (OR 2.0, 95% CI 1.41 – 2.99). However, women who were married/cohabiting were less likely to report alcohol use (OR .71, 95% CI .53 - .95). Experiencing intimate partner violence during the current pregnancy was associated with alcohol use (OR 2.42, 95% CI 1.38 – 4.27) and hazardous/harmful drinking (OR 2.62, 95% CI 1.32 – 5.22). In this study, women who identified as Coloured were more likely to report alcohol use than Women who identified as African (OR 2.74, 95% CI 1.4 – 5.36). These findings simultaneously provide evidence of problematic drinking among pregnant women in a previously understudied area and show that external factors affect women’s drinking behaviour during pregnancy. Interventions aimed at reducing the incidence of FASD should consider alcohol use by pregnant women in the context of their lived experiences. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Psychology, 2022

- Description: University students are at risk for reduced mental wellbeing, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, and among the most common problems experienced are academic distress and eating concerns. Through a stress-coping model lens, a link between academic distress and disordered eating in student populations appears possible but has not previously been explored. The present study examines this relationship in a South African undergraduate sample. Data were collected during the Covid-19 pandemic using a cross-sectional, correlational survey design and the Counseling Center Assessment of Psychological Symptoms (CCAPS). The results of a multiple regression analysis indicate that academic distress most strongly predicts eating concerns, followed by the demographic variables of female gender and black racial identification. This novel finding suggests that academic institutions should consider the broader academic environment as point of intervention for the prevention and treatment of disordered eating in students. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Psychology, 2021
