- Description: As a “Non-Annex 1” country, there was no obligation for South Africa to reduce its carbon emissions. South Africa undertook, of its own volition, to take measures to reduce 34% of the carbon monoxide emissions by 2020 and 42% by 2025 respectively. In response, South Africa promulgated the Carbon Tax Act, No. 15 of 2019. This study seeks to answer the question: After analysing the range of environmental taxes levied in the Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden) and in South Africa, are there lessons that can be learnt for South Africa? In answering this question, the carbon tax structure in South Africa and in selected Scandinavian countries is analysed, together with existing environmental taxes and the related policies, using a literature study. What is evident from the Scandinavian countries studied, is that environmental taxes have distributional effects and are effective in reducing carbon emissions. The major result of the study was that the real weakness of the newly introduced Carbon Tax Act is that in both in the first and second phase of its implementation, the carbon tax rate is too low to send an appropriate signal to the market and would not have the desired outcome. In addition, there are currently no guidelines that inform the revenue recycling technique to ensure transparency of revenue usage, improved energy management, or how the Carbon Tax Act will promote environmental quality. A major concern is that carbon tax revenue will not be ring-fenced. Given that South Africa is a developing country and depends mainly on non-renewable energy, it is inevitable that most of its sectors will be subject to the carbon tax. A plausible approach is the one that promotes the idea of taxing those more heavily that contribute most to environmental degradation and are highly energy concentrated, to promote parity between the harm to the environment and the taxes levied to redress the harm.

This study investigated the presence of antibiotics, anti-epilepsy and anti-inflammatory drugs in river water of selected rivers in the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used for screening of sulfamethoxazole and fluoroquinolones antibiotics. The samples were collected in upper-stream, middle-stream and lower-stream regions of the rivers and effluent of selected wastewater treatment plants. Pre-concentration of the samples was conducted using lyophilisation and extraction was conducted using solid phase extraction (SPE) on Waters Oasis hydrophilic-lipophilic-balanced cartridge.

The use of old records management strategies is posing serious challenges in most African countries and it is affecting the development of archives and records. Literature shows that most municipalities in Southern African countries have not adapted advance records management strategies like Integrated records management and Cloud systems for the realization of benefits of effectiveness and efficiency in records management. The history of Johannesburg municipality and the significance of records management in terms of leveraging effective service delivery raised critical concerns over the development of archives and records management. Proper management of records is the foundation of any government needs to provide services, to fulfil its obligation of accountability towards its citizens and protect their rights. According to the continuum model, the archivists and records managers need to be involved together with information systems designers in the creation of records keeping systems. The records continuum model emphasizes advanced records management strategies and systems in order to ensure the systematic preservation, retrieval and disposal of records. As the records management systems shift from the narrow physical records management as well as imaging into the broader electronic records world there is need for the municipality to embrace more advanced records management strategies like Outsource/Cloud service and integrated records management systems. In order to get a deeper understanding of the factors that affect the development of archives and records management; this study combined both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The census method was used to select all the 80 members of the records management department in the metropolitan municipality. An in-depth interview schedule was conducted with 4 records managers in order to collect qualitative data. Questionnaires were distributed to 76 personnel in the records management department. Without an operational and effective policy in the department of records, there is no vanguard against unlawful records and archives access and corruption, which is affecting archives development and records management in the long run. The study established although email backups and archiving of files are important strategies, more effective and modern strategies like Integrated Records Management system across the entire organization and the cloud system have not been put in place. This is attributed to the lack of funding and IT expertise. The study concluded that that although training and skills development programs are being ii implemented, skills transfer is not fully taking place due to lack of; equipment, time, managerial support and post-training interventions as well monitoring and evaluation systems. The study recommends an integrated records management system, operationalization of the records management system, effective skills transfer programs, the competency-based model.

The role of microhabitats within mangroves: an invertebrate and fish larval perspective

- Description: Microhabitats provided through structural complexity are central for the diversity, productivity, connectivity and niche differentiation within and among ecosystems. Mangrove forests afford juvenile fish and invertebrates with nursery and recruitment habitats, facilitated by the fine scale configuration of their specialised root systems. Although the importance of mangroves for resident and transient juveniles is well recognised, the roles that mangrove microhabitats play for larvae is not yet comprehensively understood. This study aimed to determine how microhabitats with varying degrees of complexity influence the composition, abundance and distribution of larval communities that inhabit mangrove forests and the physiological responses of larvae to acute temperature variations in relation to ontogenetic stage and microenvironment exposure. Two relatively pristine study sites were selected to represent a warm temperate and subtropical mangrove system in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal on the east coast of South Africa, respectively. The differences in complexity among the root systems of Rhizophora mucronata, Avicennia marina and Bruguiera gymnorhiza were assessed using 3D scanning and the computed 3D models were then analysed using four complexity metrics. Results indicated that A. marina is the most complex in terms of surface-volume ratio, R. mucronata has the most interstitial space among its roots and B. gymnorhiza and R. mucronata differ in their fractal dimensions. Larvae collected in each microhabitat at each site using light traps showed that, despite temperature and salinity homogeneity across microenvironments, spatio-temporal differences occurred in both fish and invertebrate assemblages. This trend suggests that microhabitat structural complexity exerts an influence on larval community composition by acting as a microscape of available habitat, which ensures ecological linkages within and among the mangrove forest and adjacent ecosystems. In addition, the oxygen consumption rates of mangrove-associated brachyuran larvae varied according to mangrove microhabitat, whereby larvae collected at less complex environments had the highest metabolic rates at increased temperatures. Moreover, ontogenetic shifts in physiology were prevalent as older brachyuran larvae were more eurythermal than earlier stages, suggesting that thermally stressful events will have a greater impact on recently spawned larvae. Overall, the interstitial spaces within individual root systems are the most important complexity measure, as utilisation of these mangrove microhabitats is scale-dependent, and larvae will most likely occupy spaces inaccessible to large predators. Likewise, microscale variation in the environmental conditions and ontogenetic stage of brachyuran larvae within the mangrove microscape, can amplify the physiological responses to rapid temperature variations. Results suggest that early stage larvae are the most vulnerable to mass-mortality, and if thermally stressful events increase in frequency, duration and magnitude, the larval supply for the successful recruitment into adult populations could be under threat. Through linking how mangrove microhabitat complexity influences larvae in terms of community metrics and physiology, this study paves the way for further advancement of our understanding of how microscale processes emerge into meso- and macroscale patterns and influence the stability and functioning of highly productive ecosystems.

- Description: Many research studies propose that we have an ageing population with an increased number of people living past the age of 85 years. Ageing is accompanied by a gradual decline in physical, mental and sensory abilities. Older people may have experienced trauma throughout their lives, and very often, their symptoms of trauma are regarded as part of the ageing process rather than actual symptoms of trauma. In addition, older people often do not seek help throughout their lives for various reasons. While there is research available about older people and trauma, little is known about Eye Movement Integration(EMI)therapy as a treatment intervention in treating symptoms of trauma in older persons. The purpose of this research was an explorative and descriptive study of older people’s responses to EMI therapy as a treatment intervention for their symptoms of trauma. More specifically, the study was designed to determine how older people process their symptoms through EMI therapy and whether they view it as valuable. This qualitative study used an exploratory-descriptive research design with a non-probability, purposive sampling method. The EMI therapy sessions were offered to older adults in the Knysna area who presented with symptoms of trauma. From this group, only those who were able and willing to engage in therapeutic interviews formed part of the research. As part of the study, they consented to the use of their inventories from the EMI sessions as a qualitative document analysis and taking part in qualitative interviews to explore their views on the usefulness of EMI therapy to deal with their trauma. The findings emphasise that older people are not familiar with EMI. However, they view their experience of it in a positive light and regard it as a useful treatment intervention for treating their symptoms. Moreover, EMI seems to be a brief and cost-effective trauma intervention with practical benefits for older adults. The results from this study can assist social work professionals, specifically those working with older people, to address and improve the overall health and emotional wellbeing of older people. - Description: Despite the size of the informal small-scale farming sector and its livestock holdings in South Africa, there has been little detailed work to assess how livestock populations are affected by drought. South Africa experienced a major drought in 2015–2016. We analysed goat and cattle census data from the Msinga area in KwaZulu-Natal, which represent the livestock of some 3 000 households. Cattle farmers in the study area lost 43% of the herd, compared with 29% for goats, in 2015–2016. Three years after the drought, cattle numbers remained depressed, whereas goat numbers had recovered. Larger herds suffered lower mortality rates, suggesting that owners of larger herds had better means to support their herds. Support to reduce drought losses and aid recovery should take into consideration the different capabilities and requirements of small and large herd owners. Effects of high stocking rates and resource condition on mortality and herd growth were apparent during the drought year of 2016, but not the other years. Most die-offs appear to have been concentrated in a short period once forage and water resources became too scarce and far to reach. Recognising when this threshold is imminent would be useful for targeting strategic interventions.

A dearth of national-scale assessments in the Global South has precluded the ability to explore how political regimes, such as the forced racial segregation in South Africa during and after Apartheid, have influenced the extent of and access to green infrastructure over time. We investigate whether there are disparities in green infrastructure distributions across race and income geographies in urban South Africa. Using open-source satellite imagery and geographic information, along with national census statistics, we find that public and private green infrastructure is more abundant, accessible, greener and more treed in high-income relative to low-income areas, and in areas where previously advantaged racial groups (i.e. White citizens) reside.

Risk assessment was performed to identify and analyse risk areas for the manufacture of captopril pellets. Twelve experimental runs were performed using a Plackett-Burman screening design. Pareto plots revealed the effect of formulation and process variables on the responses monitored and facilitated the identification of the most critical parameters for optimization of the formulation. A response surface methodology approach in conjunction with a central composite design was used to optimize the Eudragit® RL 30D (15-30 ml), microcrystalline cellulose (20-40 % w/w), sodium starch glycolate (2-5 % w/w) and spheronizer speed (650-1050 rpm).

- Description: Much has been written about the inequalities inherent in the psychiatric care provided to mentally ill individuals in the Cape Colony, but to date few works have been produced that describe in detail the processes and care regimes at particular institutions. This thesis examines the history of care and custody provided by the Grahamstown Asylum in the Cape between the years of 1875 and 1905. The intention is to determine the means and methods by which the Asylum’s authorities developed, almost unchallenged, a system of unequal treatment and favouritism within that facility, and what this meant for the men and women committed to the Asylum’s custody. To this end, contemporaneous official reports from Asylum staff and Colonial authorities were consulted, in conjunction with the Asylum’s internal records such as registers and individual patient files. This thesis concludes that the evolution of the Colony’s psychiatric community’s beliefs around mental illness, philosophies of protective custody and moral treatment within the psychiatric community at the time, the region’s laws governing psychiatric institutionalisation, and the larger context of the Cape’s socio-political environment at the time converged to create an institution that practiced discrimination on both a macro- and micro-level. This discriminatory framework affected who was admitted, the diagnosis that each person received, the asylum facilities to which they had access, and further, to the odds against their recovery. The implications of this study are relevant in the present day, as the modern South African system of psychiatric institutionalisation, though embedded within a socio-political context of equality and non-discrimination nevertheless appears to suffer from a similarly undemocratic framework of operation.

- Description: Baited Remote Underwater Video systems (BRUVS) have become a well-established in-situ monitoring technique in clearwater aquatic ecosystems. The relatively low cost, nondestructive and non-extractive nature of this technique permits BRUVS to be employed in a wide range of habitats. To date, the vast majority of studies using BRUVS technology have been conducted in marine habitats. Subsequently, BRUVS applications in freshwater habitats are scant, and techniques are not well developed. The primary objective of this thesis was to address this knowledge gap and develop standard operating procedures for BRUVS employment in Lake Malawi/Niassa and explore the potential of BRUVS as a monitoring tool for fish communities in the African Great Lakes. Eight easily identifiable species groups, representative of Lake Malawi/Niassa inshore fish communities, were used to develop the technique. The optimal BRUVS deployment time to obtain 95 % species accumulation was achieved in a 15-minute recording period. Power analysis, using a pre-determined 80 % power, a confidence interval of 95 % and a significance level of < 0.05 was used to determine annual sampling effort requirements for each species group. The power analysis was performed to detect a 10 % change in abundance over a hypothetical 10-year monitoring scenario. In areas where fish abundance was lower, the sampling effort required to monitor key fisheries species was significantly higher. For example, Chambo, the local Oreochromis (Nyasalapia) species flock, required an annual sampling effort of 120 deployments in Malawi compared to 56 in Mozambique ( < 0.05). Chambo had a higher detection probability in areas of lesser fishing pressure and were found in higher abundances in deeper, less accessible habitats. Deep-water (> 20 m) and rocky habitats were most important in explaining Chambo abundance and detection probability. The size-structure of Chambo in Lake Malawi/Niassa reflects size-specific depth and habitat migrations. Larger Chambo were observed aggregating in waters deeper than 20 m and a broader size range of individuals were observed utilising structured habitat. The effects of fishing are apparent in the size-structure of Chambo in the areas sampled. In study areas exposed to greater levels of fishing pressure – such as Malawi, the BRUVS detected significantly fewer individuals within sexually mature size classes, and the average size was smaller than in areas with less exploitation.

A genetic analysis of the species and intraspecific lineages of Dactylopius Costa (Hemiptera: Dactylopiidae)

- Description: The Cactaceae family comprises 15 genera and nearly 2000 species. With one exception, these are all native to the Americas. Numerous cactaceous species are invasive in other parts of the world, resulting in considerable damage to ecosystem functioning and agricultural practices. The most successful biological control agents used to combat invasive Cactaceae belong to the Dactylopius genus (Hemiptera: Dactylopiidae), comprising eleven species. The Dactylopiidae are exclusively cactophagous and are usually host-specific. Some intraspecific lineages of dactylopiids, often referred to as `biotypes', also display host-specificity, and are used to control particular species of invasive Cactaceae. To date, two lineages within Dactylopius opuntiae (`ficus' and `stricta'), and two within D. tomentosus (`cholla' and `imbricata') have been released in South Africa to control Opuntia ficus-indica and O. stricta, and Cylindropuntia fulgida and C. imbricata, respectively. The `californica var. parkeri' lineage is currently under consideration for release in South Africa for the control of C. pallida. Australia has already released these five lineages, and approved the release of an additional three in 2017; namely D. tomentosus `bigelovii', `cylindropuntia sp.', and `acanthocarpa x echinocarpa'. Many of the Dactylopius species are so morphologically similar, and in the case of lineages, identical, that numerous misidentifications have been made in the past. These errors have had serious implications, such as failed attempts at the biological control of cactus weeds. This thesis aimed to generate a multi-locus genetic database to enable the identification of the species and lineages in the Dactylopiidae family, and to test its accuracy. Seven species were included in the analysis, including two lineages within D. opuntiae and six within D. tomentosus. Genetic characterisation was achieved through the DNA sequencing of three gene regions; namely mitochondrial 12S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase I (COI), nuclear 18S rRNA, and fragment analysis using two inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSRs). Nucleotide sequences were very effective for species-level identification, where the 12S, 18S, and COI regions showed 100%, 94.59%, and 100% identification accuracy rates, respectively. Additionally, the 12S and COI markers distinguished between half of the D. tomentosus lineages (`californica', `cholla', and `imbricata'), with identification accuracies of 100%. The `echinocarpa x acanthocarpa', `bigelovii', and `cylindropuntia sp.' lineages formed one clade. None of the DNA genetic markers showed a separation between the `ficus' and `stricta' lineages within D. opuntiae. Fragment analysis through the use of ISSRs provided higher-resolution results, and addressed this gap by showing a well-supported separation between the two lineages, and between wild populations collected in the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. The identification accuracy of the `ficus' and `stricta' lineages was 81.82%. This is the first time that a method has been developed that can distinguish between these lineages. An additional component of this thesis was the creation of three user-friendly R-based programs to assist with: 1. ISSR data processing. 2. The identification of query Dactylopius nucleotide sequences relative to the gene databases created here. 3. A graphical user interface (GUI) version of the R package `SPIDER', which is useful for the assessment of the accuracy of genetic barcode data. A successful biological control programme relies on the correct identification of the agent in question, and so it is imperative that cactus biological control practitioners are able to distinguish between Dactylopius species and lineages in order to release the most effective ones onto target Cactaceae. The laboratory protocols reported, and data processing tools created here, have largely addressed this need and offer valuable practical applications. These include: 1. The flagging of potential new species, cryptic species, and lineages of dactylopiid species released as new biocontrol agents. 2. Validating the identifications made by taxonomists based on morphology. 3. Confirming to which species, and, where applicable, to which lineage, a field-collected sample belongs. 4. Identifying hybrids resulting from lineage crosses. Ensuring that the correct Dactylopius species are utilised for biological control will improve the control of invasive Cactaceae and protect biodiversity and agricultural productivity.

- Description: The purpose of this paper is to outline the climate responsive innovation process within the agricultural innovation system of the North West Province, South Africa. The focus was on the embedded curriculum and learning activity system and its responses to social-ecological and earth system changes influenced by climate change. It outlines the barriers and processes hampering curriculum and learning innovations towards climate-smart responsiveness, and also examines the processes required to initiate micro and macro innovations. This paper focusses on how actors within the system can initiate curriculum innovation and climate responsiveness through micro innovations when supported and how this can lead to macro innovations. The system experienced various barriers during the innovation process and overcame many challenges during the journey towards climate-smart responsiveness through the identification of contradictions within the system, developing tools to assist in the transitioning process and expansion in the social-spatial dimension by establishing a learning network within the surrounding communities. The research indicated that the catalysing of the curriculum and learning system required specific tools, time and the understanding of the importance of micro-level innovation.

- Description: Music Performance Anxiety (MPA) refers to the potentially debilitating anxiety experienced before and/or during the public performance of music, despite adequate preparation. MPA is generally treated by means of drug therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, psychoanalysis or various relaxation techniques. This research aims to present a different approach to dealing with MPA, based on a reconceptualisation of the concept. As a result, it attempts to unpack all three concepts inherent in the term from both a psychological and philosophical viewpoint. The study used autoethnography as a methodology, as I wished to explore my own lived experience of MPA and anxiety in general, in conjunction with that of my two participants, two other student Western Art music performers, and how our methods for confronting MPA within the performance context itself suggests a more complex understanding of performance and MPA than is reflected in the current literature. Thus the data was collected from two first-person interviews as well as a self-reflective written account. The results of the analysis were that existential anxiety is potentially a contributing factor to MPA, and that performance itself can potentially provide the very means for overcoming not only MPA, but all forms of anxiety, due to the cathartic quality of music as well as performance, especially when the liminal or interstructural, nature of performing and its ritualistic function is explored. This exploration reveals the world and self-disclosing nature of agency and Play, or the potential within experiences to resolve conflicts and reveal otherness. This requires a degree of existential courage, or an affirmative response to the unknown, which is more relational than the definition suggests. In conclusion, this study reconceptualises MPA as a potentially potent existential experience, and that the anxiety in response to it is considered as a reaction to the catharsis inherent in being an agent, rather than merely as an obstacle to be controlled.

A systematic analysis of doctoral publication trends in South Africa

- Description: It is incumbent upon doctoral students that their work makes a substantive contribution to the field within which it is conducted. Dissemination of this work beyond the dissertation, whether whilst studying or after graduation, is necessary to ensure that the contribution does not remain largely dormant. While dissemination can take many forms, peer-reviewed journal articles are the key medium by which knowledge is shared. We aimed to establish the proportion of doctoral theses that results in journal publications by linking South African doctoral thesis metadata to journal articles authored by doctoral candidates. To effect this matching, a customised data set was created that comprised two large databases: the South African Theses Database (SATD), which documented all doctoral degrees awarded in South Africa (2005-2014), and the South African Knowledgebase (SAK), which listed all publications submitted for subsidy to the South African Department of Higher Education and Training (2005-2017). The process followed several iterations of matching and verification, including manual inspection of the data, in order to isolate only those records for which the link was established beyond doubt. Over the period under review, 47.6% of graduates, representing 22 of the 26 higher education institutions, published at least one journal article. Results further indicate increasingly higher publication rates over time. To explore whether the journal article identified was a direct product of the study, a similarity index was developed. Over 75% of records demonstrated high similarity. While the trend towards increasing publications by graduates is promising, work in this area should be ongoing. In spite of increasing trends in publications by graduates, many are not disseminating their work, suggesting that significant bodies of research are potentially not being shared with the academic community and are therefore not contributing to the relevant discipline or field. •This study provides baseline data from which a number of further investigations can be launched, such as exploring the extent to which doctoral candidates who are also academics are publishing their work; the factors that enable or constrain publication; the other avenues of dissemination used; and whether publishing or not publishing can serve as a proxy for the quality of the doctoral work.

- Description: Primary producers of fresh produce and other agricultural commodities at large, also known as farmers in South Africa are diminishing at a worrying rate (58,000) commercial farmers in 1998 to under 35,000 in 2018). The sustainability of the agriculture sector in South Africa is at risk (Aye, Gupta & Wanke, 2018). Sustainable agriculture has the potential to address some of the fundamental challenges facing agricultural practices in South Africa. The agriculture sector play an important role as driver for economic growth in the economy. Improving agricultural sustainability is fundamental to food security and poverty reduction (Vink,2014). The primary objective of this study is to empirically examine the effects of macro factors on the sustainability of fresh produce in South Africa. These factors are political certainty, economic certainty, environmental certainty and the production of fresh produce. The importance of these factors to farmers is well documented. An online research survey, with 247 respondents was conducted. Data analyses were conducted through descriptive and inferential statistics. The study concludes with managerial recommendations that can be implemented to increase certainty among the independent variables and so improve sustainability. Some recommendations include: improved communication between the industry and government, improved collaboration and the implementation of well aligned strategies in order to manage risks associated with macro factors. Findings of the study suggest that the independent and dependent factors influence each other. The practical contribution of the study is the detailed insight that is provided by the study which reveals that sustainability can be linked to the productivity of farmers and implies that although fresh produce farmers are uncertain and concerned about the macro factors outside their control, they are very positive about their production and long-term sustainability and do not intend to quit the industry. The study indicated the importance of sustainability of fresh produce in South Africa.

Audit of intravenous antifungal therapy used for Candida infections at a South African private hospital

- Description: The epidemiological landscape of the candida species has changed with the emergence of MDR strains globally and in South Africa. The aim of this study was to critically evaluate the compliance to guidelines in the use of intravenous antifungal therapy when treating invasive Candidainfections in a South African private hospital.Objective One was to determine the prevalence of Candida auris(C.auris) in the sample. Objective Two examined the relationship between high-risk patients and positive microbiological cultures. Objective Three studied the prescribing utilisation of the intravenous antifungalsin the form of a clinical audit. Objective Four compared these prescribing patternsto current guidelines by evaluating whether the antifungal course was non-compliant, of suboptimal compliance or compliant. Objective Five was to design a protocol for ward pharmacists to use when assessing antifungal treatment for candidiasis. The research design consisted of a retrospective, non-experimental, cross-sectional analysis of intravenous antifungal use in the management of systemic Candida infections in a private sector hospital in the Gauteng province, South Africa.A positive research paradigm with a quantitative clinical audit was used in this study. The most prevalent species cultured was C.auris with 31 of the 77 positive cultures. Risk stratifying patients was validated with 70% of high risk patients (Candida Score >2.5 and positive β-D-glucan) having a corresponding positive culture. Echinocandins were the most frequently utilised antifungal class, with caspofungin being the most used antifungal in the sample. The average duration of therapy for the echinocandins ranged between 11 and 16 days. Compliance to guidelines was evaluated accordingto: reason for initiation; drug choice and drug dose. Three levels of compliance were determined: non-compliant, sub-optimal compliance and compliant. xivThe overall compliance,according to recommended treatment guidelines,was found to be suboptimal, with anidentified need foranintervention which targets thedosing of the antifungals used. In conclusion, the research findings highlight the importance of reviewing antifungal prescribing habits and the need for antifungal stewardship programmes.

- Description: Retraction Watch maintains a "running list" of retracted papers on Covid-19 related research. By the end of September 2020, thirty-three retracted Covid-19 papers were listed. We analysed these retracted papers, focusing specifically on how they have been cited by review papers, and subsequently how they have penetrated and potentially distorted public discourse and legitimate research on Covid-19. The study demonstrates the need for more in-depth studies that focus on the phenomenon of citation pollution. We show that the "Covid-19 publication race", amplified by a pressure-to-publish research culture, distorted published science on Covid-19. We highlight the urgency to engage popular media and critical decision makers on how to distinguish between questionable and legitimate science. We also emphasise the importance of dealing with illegitimate research in a timely manner, both from a scholarly communications and research quality perspective. , Retraction Watch maintient une "liste courante" des articles rétractés sur les recherches liées au Covid-19. De studie toont aan dat er behoefte is aan meer diepgaande studies die zich richten op het fenomeen van de citatievervuiling. Thermal tolerance and the potential effects of climate change on coastal intertidal and estuarine organisms in the Kariega Estuary and adjacent intertitdal coastline, Eastern Cape, South Africa

- Description: Temperature changes due to the effects of climate change are evident on all continents and oceans. As a result, there is a growing concern over how marine ectotherms will respond to extreme or fluctuating environmental temperatures. Temperature changes have strong direct and indirect effects on individual, population, and ecosystem functioning traits. A multi-scale approach determining the thermal tolerance and performance of several marine ectotherms belonging to different coastal habitats is rarely considered in thermal physiology studies but is effective for an integrated ecosystem assessment. As such, for this thesis, I aimed to quantify and compare the thermal tolerance and performance of a range of coastal marine ectotherms (fish and macro-invertebrates) with different biogeographical distributions from estuarine, subtidal and rocky intertidal habitats to available and projected in situ temperature data. This was also undertaken to gauge the local vulnerability of each species across summer and winter in a warm-temperate region of South Africa. This was done using a multi-method physiological approach, which included the dynamic method (CTmax and CTmin), static respirometry and maximum heart rate fHmax). Results of the dynamic method on several fish and macro-invertebrate species indicated that there are differences in thermal tolerance according to taxonomy, biogeography and habitat for both summer and winter. Macro-invertebrate species generally had higher CTmax endpoints, lower CTmin endpoints, higher upper and lower breadths in tolerance, higher upper and lower thermal safety margins and higher thermal scopes than the fish species. This could be a result of the macro-invertebrate species studied being less mobile compared with fish species (which are able to move to more favourable conditions) as well as having broader geographical distributions. In addition, macro-invertebrates from the intertidal rock pool habitat (Palaemon peringueyi; Pernaperna) were more tolerant of high and low temperatures compared with the macro-invertebrates from the estuarine habitat (Clibanarius virescens; Parasesarma catenatum; Upogebia africana). Overall, macro-invertebrates, with the exception of Parechinus angulosus, investigated in this study indicated that current temperatures and projected climate change scenarios across seasons would not have a significant impact on them and that they are highly adaptable to changing temperature regimes. This sign of high tolerance was further supported by the heart rates of P. perna and P. catenatum under an acute increase in temperature (1.0 °C.h-1) which showed individuals of each species physiologically depressing their metabolism until a final Arrhenius breakpoint temperature was reached (TAB). Among the fish species investigated in this study, tropical species (Chaetodon marleyi; Kuhlia mugil) had the highest CTmax and CTmin endpoints when compared with the temperate (Diplodus capensis; Sarpa salpa), warm-water endemic (Chelon dumerili; Rhabdosargus holubi) and cool-water endemic (Chelon richardsonii) fishes. This suggests that due to their lower breadths in tolerance and thermal safety margins being small, tropical species may be less tolerant of cold temperatures and thermal variability, especially in the form of summer upwelling events which are expected to increase in intensity and frequency in this region as a result of anthropogenic climate change effects. On the other hand, however, if a temperature increase of 2.0 - 4.0 °C takes place at the end of the century as predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), it is likely that tropical species such as C. marleyi will become more common. Temperate species such as D. capensis and S. salpa were able to tolerate a wide range of temperatures (wide thermal scope) compared with the other fish species. These findings may suggest that D. capensis and S. salpa are thermally resilient and may be the least vulnerable to climate change effects and temperature variability. When evaluating the different life stages of D. capensis, however, using the dynamic method (juveniles and adults), static respirometry (juveniles) and maximum heart rate (adults), results suggested that juveniles of this temperate species will be more resilient to increases in ocean temperatures compared with the adults because they have a higher thermal tolerance (CTmax/TCRIT) and a greater metabolic scope (TOPT) at higher temperatures. For both juveniles and adults, temperatures beyond 28.0 °C (upper Tpej; Tarr) will have a significant impact on their physiology. Using a multi-scale and multi-method approach thus helped to identify which species or community may be vulnerable to the effects of climate change within shallow coastal environments in this warm-temperate climate change hotspot. Adopting this type of approach will assist policy makers in developing comprehensive climate change management frameworks for coastal ecosystems globally and around South Africa.
