- Description: The current investigation was conducted in the Mthatha Education District. It sought to investigate factors affecting the implementation of the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) in the Mthatha schools of the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. Literature reviewed showed that teachers, as the key role players to the implementation of the curriculum in schools, are still experiencing difficulties in implementing the NCS. It is thus important to establish and investigate the factors affecting the implementation of the NCS. The research was both exploratory and explanatory in nature and adopted a mixed method approach. Questionnaires were distributed among 210 teachers who were randomly selected from 363 schools in the Mthatha Education District. Out of 210 teachers who were provided with questionnaires to fill out, it was 148 (70.5 percent) of them who completed and returned the questionnaires. Semi-structured interviews were conducted face-to-face with 10 purposefully selected teachers to collect the data from those who participated by filling out the questionnaires. The researcher analysed the data both quantitatively and qualitatively. The data was presented, analysed and discussed according to themes derived from the main research question and sub-questions. The quantitative data (closed-ended statements) was analysed statistically by means of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). In the case of the qualitative data (open-ended statements in questionnaires and interviews), similar responses were analysed in themes as per the research question and sub-questions for easy interpretation. Note-taking and tape-recording were done during the interview sessions. Qualitative data were transcribed, coded and analysed. The findings which emerged from the study indicated that intermediate-phase teachers experienced difficulties in implementing the NCS. These were attributed to, amongst others, a lack of resources such as learning material and infrastructure, redeployment of teachers, a high learner teacher ratio, inadequate in-service training and support from the DoE. These factors need to be addressed to enhance the implementation of the NCS and to avoid the repetition of those shortcomings in any future envisaged changes to the curriculum such as the implementation of CAPS.

- Description: The unique physical features of the child with Down syndrome (DS) may lead to stigmatization and social isolation of the child, as well as their entire families. A child with DS may require some help and constant attention from the primary caregiver and may even be permanently dependent, depending on the severity of DS. The researcher has explored and described the experiences of primary caregivers of children with DS in the Kwazakhele community while caring for these children. The research study employed a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design. The research population included primary caregivers of children with DS who were between ages of two years and older because a DS diagnosis can be delayed and only be discovered later in life. Purposive sampling was used to select the research participants. The data was collected using in-depth one-on-one interviews, and all interviews were recorded using a voice recorder. Thematic analysis as a version of content analysis was used, meaning the researcher used themes and sub-themes to analyze data with the help of an independent coder. A pilot study was conducted before undertaking the actual research using the same methods and designs as those of the main study. Strategies were implemented throughout the study to ensure trustworthiness and adherence to ethical principles. The study findings revealed that the participants experienced diverse emotions upon initially finding out that their child has DS. The participants indicated that they had to modify their lives including having to give up their personal lives just to ensure that their children got the best care and their full attention. It appeared that some participants got full support from their partners and families, while other participants had no support system. With further exploration, it emerged that the study participants shared some positive experiences with their children with DS. However, they indicated a need for relevant education facilities for their children as well as community support. Recommendations were made with regard to nursing education, nursing practice and nursing research.

- Description: The use of learner teacher support material (LTSM) was introduced with the aim of improve the education quality in South Africa. However, the procurement of the learner teacher support material has had several challenges. The study therefore was aimed at assessing the management of the procurement of LTSM in the Eastern Cape which is done by the Eastern Cape Department of Education. The aims of the study therefore were, to provide a full description of the current supply chain management practices of the ECDOE, examine the strengths and weaknesses of the current procurement management model in the acquisition of LTSM and investigate alternative selection, delivery and management models. To attain these aims data was collected using both the quantitative and qualitative methods. The use of the two methods helped to establish a balance in collecting data as the research sought to use both quantitative and qualitative data. The research used a case study design. The research instruments that were used to collected data were questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The data for the study was provided by school principals, district officials and ECDoE officials. These were the best participants for the study as they have information on the current procurement system. The data was analysed in themes. The data was presented and discussed in relation to other studies that have been conducted on similar topics. The study found that the current procurement system is flawed due to several reasons like lack of clarity on roles and responsibilities, training and other factors discussed in the study. The study also found that there are inherent strengths and weaknesses in the current procurement model. The study found that the weaknesses can be addressed. The study also found that improvements and alternatives are possible for procurement. The study suggested several recommendations. Some of the recommendations include training the current staff involved in the supply chain management of the procurement system. The other being clarifying the roles and responsibilities of the stakeholders involved in the procurement process. , Thesis (MPA) -- Faculty of Management and Commerce. 2015
