- Description: Al/Cr atomic ratios of coexisting spinellids and ortho- and clinopyroxenes show a pattern of sympathetic variation that persists through ultramafic rocks of layered mafic complexes of upper-crustal type, Alpine complexes, and the nodules found in kimberlites and alkaline basalts. Simple expressions are empirically derived to link (Al/Cr) orthopyroxene and (Al/Cr)spinel ratios in putatively equilibrated rocks. Equivalence of spinel compositions in shallow layered complexes and kimberlite nodules of deep-seated origin negates direct crystallochemical control of Al/Cr ratios of spinels by pressure.

The concept of grade in mineral deposits

- Description: The grade of a mineral deposit is determined by the effectiveness of a geological ore forming process, which is the result of the interaction between an ore forming mechanism and the environment in which it operates. Properties of a mineral deposit controlled by ore forming processes include the distribution, density and nature of ore minerals and gangue, and the metal content and impurities of the ore minerals. More efficient ore forming processes tend to develop in the larger mineralizing systems giving rise to richer deposits. As the geological environment within which a mineral deposit evolves becomes more complex a greater number of variables interact to determine the grade of the deposit. This is reflected in the greater variability of the grade distribution, resulting in greater difficulties in obtaining reliable estimates of the recoverable grade, and increased difficulties in the processing of ores. In response to economic fluctuations the working grade of heterogeneous orebodies, that form in geologically complex environments, can often be altered to ensure the continued viability of a mining venture. In contrast the evenly mineralized orebodies that tend to develop in geologically simple environments do not have this flexibility. All the important decisions in the mining industry, such as feasibility studies, choice of ~ining and processing methods, selection and planning, are made on the basis of, or are related to, grade estimates. If the geological controls of grade are fully understood, then it is possible to optimize the selection of the various mining alternatives, leading to the efficient exploitation of ore deposits.

- Description: In accordance with American findings, it was proposed that androgynous individuals would be more liberal in their attitudes towards women and more self-actualizing than sex-typed individuals, and that they would tend to conceptualize the well-adjusted person as androgynous, while the sex-typed individual would tend to conceptualize such a person as masculine. It was further hypothesized that sex differences in favour of the female subjects would be found on the first two variables. The Bern Sex-Role Inventory, Shostrom's Personal Orientation Inventory and Spence and Helmreich's Attitudes Toward Women Scale were applied to 192 school counsellors in training and in the field. The hypotheses regarding an androgynous as opposed to a sex-typed orientation on the variables attitudes toward women and self-actualization were not supported; nor were sex-typed individuals found to conceptualize a well-adjusted person as masculine . Sex differences in favour of female subjects were found on the Attitudes Toward Women Scale and on some of the Personal Orientation Inventory scales, and androgynous subjects were found to hold an androgynous model of adjustment.

- Description: In South Africa at present there are 104 Industrial Councils. However, the one for the Iron, Steel, Engineering and Metallurgical Industries is the largest and most important covering nearly 500 000 workers. But only about 100 000 of these workers belong to trade unions. At the Industrial Council the employers and trade unions negotiate an agreement that covers all 500 000 workers. At present on the union side there are 14 trade unions - M A W U will make it 15. But most of these unions are racial unions and what are called craft unions - that is their members only do certain kinds of jobs e.g. boilermakers or electricians etc. On the employer side nearly all the 8400 factories in the industry are members of the employer association SEIFSA. It is SEIFSA - which is the largest and most powerful employer association in South Africa - that negotiates for employers on the Industrial Council.

- Description: [Introduction] Much of the information available on the prices of vegetables marketed through the fresh produce markets is of limited use to producers. This information contains the actual prices for individual years. This can obviously be taken as a guide to future prices but it does not necessarily mean that those prices are a true reflection of the general pattern. In this study an attempt will be made, firstly, to establish whether a general pattern exists in the prices of selected vegetables on the East London municipal market. This will be attempted by studying the prices obtained over the 1964-1979 period. Information of this nature can be used as a basis for the planning of future crops. Secondly, to determine the months which obtain the "best" prices for the selected vegetables taking into account the quantities supplied to the market.

- Description: From Introduction: Giorgio Vasari's first and second editions of his 'Lives of the Artists I appeared respectively in 1550 and 1568, just after the great period of Renaissance art in Florence and Rome had ended. As a practising Florentine architect, painter and sculptor who travelled extensively in Italy, sari could write with authority on the development of these arts throughout what he saw ~s the whole Renaissance period in that country, from the l ate 13th to the mid-16th century. Gathering information from all possible sources, his 'Lives' constitute the first comprehensive historical - critical survey of Italian Renaissance art. Much of their value resides in the first hand information they contain concerning the artists (Michelangelo in particular) who were his contemporaries, and in reflecting the aesthetic attitudes prevalent in a peak period in the history of art.

Joseph T. Shipley (1966:144) stel die saak so: "In die analysis of a speech or literary composition, nothing is more important than to determine precisely the voice or voices presented as speaking and the precise nature of the address (i.e. specific direction to a hearer, an addressee); for in every speech reference to a voice or voices and implication of address (i.e. reference to a process of speech, actual or imagined) is a part of the meaning, for the interpretation of which it supplies an indispensable control ".

- Description: "Our time" is the last years of the colonial era in Africa. We are at once the most advanced country on the continent, and a relic of the past. It’s inevitable that 19th century colonialism should finally come to its end here, because here it surely reached its ultimate expression, open in the legalised land- and mineral-grabbing, open in the constitutionalized, institutionalized racism that was concealed by the British under the sly notion of uplift, the French and Portuguese under the sly notion of selective assimilation. Our extraordinarily obdurate crossbreed of Dutch, German, British, French as the South African white population produced a bluntness that unveiled everyone’s refined white racism: • the flags of European civilization dropped, and there it was, unashamedly, the ugliest creation of man, and they baptized the thing in the Dutch Reformed Church, called it apartheid, coining, to outlast Nazi terminology, the ultimate term for every manifestation, over the ages, in many countries, of race prejudice. Every country on earth could see its semblances here: and most peoples. The sun that never set over one or other of the 19th century colonial empires of the world is going down finally in South Africa.

Economic geology of sulphide nickel deposits

- Description: From Chapter 1: It has been a long standing belief that many nickel sulphide ores are derivatives of magmatic processes in ultramafic and mafic rocks, and that they segregate from these magmas as immiscible sulphide droplets which are then concentrated into an orebody by gravitational settling either during intrusion or extrusion, or during the early stages of crystallization of the magma (Naldrett, 1981). Some geologists however, have suggested alternative mechanisms to explain the concentration of nickeliferous sulphides in the mafic and ultramafic hosts. These include hydrothermal replacement (Fleet, 1977), exhalative volcanic processes (Lusk, 1976), or major metamorphic upgrading of low grade, initially magmatic deposits (Barrett et al., 1977). It is not the purpose of this study to verify or disprove these hypotheses, but in so far as the initial concentration of sulphides in most deposits is concerned, these effects are relatively unimportant (Naldrett, 1981). The nickel sulphide ores associated with these mafic and ultramafic host rocks, invariably consist of nickeliferous pyrrhotite as the dominant phase, together with lesser, but variable, amounts of magnetite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite, cubanite, and platinum group elements (Reynolds, 1982).
