- Description: Agro based-infant industries played a greater role in the development of Zimbabwe since 1980 when the country gained its independence. However, its success has been hindered by industrial action in the country. The continuous increase in the number of industrial action is the major motives of this study. Conversely, with the increasing levels of industrial action in the country, it was noted that the main causes of industrial action were low wages, poor communication between employers and employees, disparities in pay structures, lack of consultation in the process of decision-making and poor working conditions. The study adopted a qualitative approach in data collection and analysis. Thirty in-depth interviews were undertaken with selected participants who are the workers and managers of agro-based infant industries using purposive sampling technique in Msasa industrial area. Findings of the study show that main forms of industrial action were industrial strike, sit in, absenteeism, go slow, work to rule and overtime ban. Major findings of the study point to the fact that industrial action affects the solidarity of workers negatively since some of the workers will not stand for others when they are dismissed after industrial action. In general, industrial action therefore weakens worker solidarity. Secondly, industrial action affects the economic welfare of workers and their families negatively. This is because during the period of industrial action there could be pay cut and the families will not be able to afford basic commodities, thereby affecting their general welfare as well as bringing tension and conflicts within the families. Thirdly, it is also acknowledged in the study that industrial action affects employer-employee relations.

- Description: The study focused on safety and security measures employed at institutions of higher learning. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of safety and security measures employed by institutions of higher learning in preventing crime. The study was carried out at the University of Fort Hare. An empirical research was conducted to collect data from the students using questionnaires. The study highlighted the rate of crime on campus as well as the effectiveness of safety and security measures on campus. The general finding of this study indicate that 51 percent of the students on campus have been victims of crime. From the victims, more than 50 percent did not report the crime to authorities. Majority of crimes are property crimes. Majority of students are not aware of any safety and security policies in the campus. Findings highlighted crime prevention challenges faced by the university. Moreover, students agree that the institution needs to improve as well as upgrade its existing safety and security measure which could help prevent the high prevalence of crime on campus From the findings of the research the researcher made recommendations and drew conclusions that could be beneficial to students as well as the institutions administrators.

- Description: Organisational communication entails the interaction that the management has with its stakeholders. Communication is never complete if the message sent has not been fully understood by the receiver. Hence, for communication to be effective, the sender has to provide two-way open channels of communication as it allows dialogue which stimulates reaching a consensus. Thus, this study was done to find out about the effectiveness of organisational communication in relation to the student-directed communication strategies at University of Fort hare, Alice campus. Data were collected from the participants through four focus groups consisting of ten randomly picked students, and in-depth interviews with five SRC members and five University management staff. A qualitative methodological approach was therefore used in this study for data collection and analysis. Furthermore, the data analysed were categorised into different themes. The findings of this study indicate that the right communication messages and channel must always be used by organisations when communicating with stakeholders. The study also found out that communication will be effective if messages are received as intended by the sender. Conclusively, the study notes that stakeholders should be included in decision making processes in the organisation and that if their needs are also catered for, this will make them to be fully involved in understanding organisational concerns positively.

- Description: This study took the form of an evaluative study of the effectiveness of public libraries as a means of providing information to school children, and was conducted at the Queenstown Public Library in the province of the Eastern Cape in South Africa. The research endeavoured to evaluate the effectiveness of public libraries in the role which they play to provide information to school children, despite the widespread belief that the role of libraries is now being replaced by Information and Communication Technologies, or ICTs. This study is also significant for the factors which contribute towards school children being prevented from receiving the full range of benefits which libraries have to offer and the recommendations which it makes to improve the effectiveness of the role played by libraries in this respect. The study could also be of benefit to the staff of libraries, as it could serve to inform them with respect to what needs to be done in order to improve the ways in which libraries make information available to school children. In this respect the research could also provide valuable insights into the strategies which need to be developed and adopted in order to make public libraries more effective providers of various types and forms of information to school children. It is to be hoped that the study will also make a valuable contribution to the existing body of knowledge concerning public libraries as a means of providing information to school children. It is the fervent wish of this researcher to make a credible and articulate case for the great value which public libraries have for school children, despite the fact that general perceptions no longer accord libraries the value which they were once commonly held to possess.

- Description: Local government has a legal obligation and a political responsibility to ensure regular and effective communication with the community. The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act 1996 and other statutory enactments all impose an obligation on local government communicators and require high levels of transparency, accountability, openness, participatory democracy and direct communication with the communities to improve service delivery and the lives of all. However, this study was to assess the impact of communication on service delivery and customer satisfaction in the selected municipalities in Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The research involved the collection of qualitative and quantitative data through simple random and convenience samplings. The data were collected using survey questionnaires, focus groups and in-depth interviews at two municipalities namely; Lukhanji local municipality and Intsika Yethu local municipality. Subsequently, data were analysed using descriptive and Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and through thematic analysis. The findings of this study showed that municipal executive, management, supervisors and the citizens or customers value communication in government because it gives support to service delivery and most of the communication programmes are effective. - Description: The aim of this paper is to evaluate the impact that social media had on influencing youths to engage in political and civic participation in the campaigning for and national elections of 2014, South Africa. Different views may impact on the implementation and use of social networking sites for politics. Youths consist of a larger population in the country but young people are also considered to be apathetic in political activities. However, it is essential to understand the perceptions of youth as this strategy was implemented especially to reach out to them, as they are the beneficiaries of the democratic system as well as future leaders of the country. Using the quantitative method, 200 questionnaires were distributed to the respondents in the University of Fort Hare and analysed by the researcher. - Description: Development in South Africa during the apartheid era was characterized by separate development, where social welfare services and programmes for individuals and communities were fragmented and administered along racial lines (White Paper for Social Welfare, 1997). The segregated social policies prevented inter-sectoral collaboration and a holistic approach to the development of communities. This lack of integration resulted in fragmentation, duplication of services, inefficiency and ineffectiveness in meeting the needs of the majority of individuals and communities. This legacy continues to impact on the implementation of social services in the current context of democratic South Africa (White Paper for Social Welfare, 1997:5-6). This study examined how integration and the integrated approach by stakeholders/role players is applied in community development in the Alfred Nzo District Municipality. Alfred Nzo District was chosen as the case study area since it is one of the nodal points for the implementation in 2004 of the Integrated Sustainable Rural Development Program (ISRDP) initiated by the National government to address poverty in the rural areas of the Province. The research was qualitative in nature. The sample comprised of nine managers, fourteen practitioners and sixty two community members in eight focus groups. Data was collected through self administered interview schedules for managers and practitioners while focus group interviews were conducted by the researcher for community members involved in community development projects. The findings suggest varied understanding of the concepts of integration, ISRDP, community development and collaboration. The findings also revealed challenges in terms of integration and co-ordination by stakeholders in community development. - Description: HIV/AIDS has rapidly spread globally since its inception more than three decades ago and almost every sort of communication media have been utilised to disseminate information helpful to reduce its spread. This research is based on a case study of Forte FM’s HIV/AIDS campaign programmes in the reduction of the spread of HIV/AIDS in Golf Course and Ntselamanzi areas in Alice, Eastern Cape. To explore and evaluate the effectiveness of Forte FM’s HIV/AIDS programmes, the researcher employed a descriptive qualitative research paradigm whereby convenience and purposive non-probability sampling methods were used to draw samples of participants for focus groups and in-depth interviews. Bearing in mind the total population of Golf Course and Ntselamanzi residential areas, the researcher perceived it applicable to establish two focus groups in each area consisting of at least eight participants in each focus group, making a total of four focus groups for both areas. Additionally, the radio programmes manager was also interviewed for her views. The collected data were analysed thematically to infer the meaning and present the findings. The findings revealed that the station disseminates influential information towards socio-behavioural change in the reduction of the spread of HIV/AIDS in Golf Course and Ntselamanzi. The research participants expressed that the station’s programmes on HIV/AIDS awareness are easily understood and influence their behaviour as they enlighten and educate them about the dangers of HIV/AIDS and how to reduce its spread. Another critical finding of this study as highlighted by the participants is the use of local language in these programmes which listeners view as a contributing element towards the reduction of the spread of this epidemic disease. The findings also showed that the station’s radio programmes have been effective for the fact that the station depends more on two-way participatory communication whereby listeners are involved and participate in the development and running of these programmes.

- Description: The focus of this dissertation was on the nature and operation of laws and regulations that were and are still being used to limit the freedom of the media in Zimbabwe. Through a legal and political analysis of the evolution and use of these laws and regulations by successive governments in Zimbabwe, the study provides an important perspective on the struggle for media freedom in Zimbabwe. The main focus of this study was to examine the impact of media laws in Zimbabwe on the freedom of expression of its citizens. Some of the key media laws under the spotlight include; Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA), the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) and the Broadcasting Services Act (BSA). The underpinning theoretical framework was informed by the Authoritarian, Libertarian and the Social Responsibility schools of thought. Questionnaires and in-depth interviews with selected key informants were the chief methods for data collection. Secondary data such as court cases, newspapers and some documents from organisations such as the UN, African Charter and Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Protocol on Culture, Information and Sport were also consulted. Qualitative data was analysed using thematic content analysis while tables, graphs and charts which were interpreted and linked with processed qualitative data to come up with emerging trends and resolutions. The research revealed that the government is aware of the shortcomings in the regulations and laws relating to the media, but is not willing to make genuine and comprehensive reforms. These laws impact negatively on freedom of expression on citizens especially journalists and their media houses. It is evident from the findings that media houses in Zimbabwe are vulnerable. These laws have forced some media houses such as Daily news, Tribune and Capital radio to close. Some of these institutions have since opened after the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU). But little has changed even after the formation of the GNU. Some of the journalists left Zimbabwe for fear of prosecution. This goes on to confirm that the current media legislations in Zimbabwe are not congruent with global norms such as the SADC Protocol on Culture, Information and Sport, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 19, the African Charter Article 9, and African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) which advocates for freedom of the media and expression. The study concluded that there is no freedom of expression in media legislation as has been witnessed from the findings of the study. - Description: This study is premised on explaining perceptions of Nkcunkcuzo and Tholenicommunity members towards factors influencing muthi killings in Butterworth, Eastern Cape (E.C.). The villagers of the two selected areas have recently experienced number of incidents. It is against this background that this study sought to establish the explanations by soliciting direct experiences of community members on incidences of muthi killings.A plethora of research projects have been previously conducted to understand this phenomenon with the Criminal Justice System (CJS) having its own perspective regarding the muthi killings. However, the researcher deemed it imperative to have explanations of community members’ perceptions of the related factors thereof. The objectives that guided this study mainly included: (1) to establish the explanations of Tholeni and Nkcunkcuzo community members on the factors that influence muthi murders, (2) to determine why people in Tholeni and Nkcunkcuzo commit muthi murders and (3) to illustrate the medus operandi of muthi murderers in Tholeni and Nkcunkcuzo. The qualitative research methodology was employed in the study. Purposive sampling was used in the selection of selected participants and respondents of this study and data was collected through self-administered questionnaires and conducted interviews by the researcher. This study established that it is rich people and politicians who are most probably reasons for incidents of muthi murders in Etholeni and in Nkcunkcuzo. Business people want to accumulate their wealth and get rich using muthi. The belief behind this is that when muthi is mixed with human body parts it is bound to be strong eventually attracting more people (customers) to the businesses owned by these people. Ultimately this leads to profit accumulation. On the other hand, the involvement of politicians in the incidents of muthi killings is mainly associated with maintaining political power by remaining as centres of preference to the community members. The participants have echoed the same sentiments on the factors that influence muthi murders in Tholeni and Nkcunkcuzo villages, Butterworth in the Eastern Cape. vi Finally, this study recommended as follows: The Etholeni and Nkcunkcuzo community leaders must work hand in hand with the government to establish centres where children, older persons and people with disabilities, particularly those who are without people to protect them, can be institutionalised in order to guarantee their safety; The chiefs of Tholeni and Nkcunkcuzomust collaborate with the social service professionals in order to address the issues of mistrust among community members through community development programs; The community policing forums of Tholeni and Nkcunkcuzo must be capacitated and their knowledge strengthened by the criminal justice agencies on muthi murders to avoid confusion about muthi murders with other different types of murders; The government of South Africa must formulate an elementary social curriculum on muthi killings in order to educate the villagers on the muthi killings from a criminal justice point of view; The legislative framework must be reviewed in order to impose harsher sentences to the muthi murderers and the accomplices thereof; There must be social welfare organizations in Tholeni and Nkcunkcuzo villages in order to take care of those children that have lost their care-givers due to muthi killings; The traditional leaders of Tholeni and Nkcunkcuzo must formulate a charter for community norms and standards to circumvent the use and selling of drugs in the concerned communities/villages. More research projects must be funded in order to get a full understanding of the causes of muthi killings and to provide a word of scientific reason to the criminal justice system, particularly as it relates to muthi killings in South Africa. - Description: Gender-based violence among university students is a major problem in South Africa and the world at large. The incidence of gender-based violence among university students is increasing for both males and females. In South Africa, many university students are likely to be victims of both direct and indirect gender-based violence this brings to doubt the efficacy of policies to address gender-based violence. This study explored factors contributing to gender-based violence among university students in selected universities of South Africa. The study opted for a qualitative research approach to achieve its primary aim. The study used the case study research design. Furthermore, the study utilised a non-probability sampling method and purposive sampling technique to generate a sample size of 25 participants. Participants were selected based on the supposed value they would add to the study. The study employed in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, secondary data, and key informant interviews for the data collection method. There were three focus groups with 4 participants each, and two of the groups comprised university students and one of the key informants. The Modified lifestyle exposure model of personal victimisation and the Gender Role theory formed the theoretical framework that guided the study. The study established that even though many universities have develop policies to address gender-based violence there is poor implementation. This may be the result of not monitoring effectively which led the policy to be invisible to the students only appear on paper not into practice. In addition, many university students who are the victims of gender-based violence do not report their experiences to authorities in their institutions or to the police because of the fear that they can be victimised again or their perpetrators are those who are in authorities. - Description: The aim of this study was to underscore the role of knowledge sharing in improving the municipal governance in the local government sector of South Africa. The objectives of the study were to find out the kind of knowledge management programmes which are in place in the municipalities of Limpopo Province; establish the extent to which municipalities in Limpopo encourage knowledge sharing for improvement of municipal governance; determine factors which affect knowledge sharing among employees of municipalities of Limpopo Province, and propose recommendations and strategies on how to optimally share knowledge in Limpopo municipalities. The nature of this study warranted the use of two research paradigms, namely positivist and interpretivist approaches. The study employed an integrated research method which covered both the qualitative and quantitative approach. In collecting data, data instruments were triangulated. In this regard, the researcher mostly used a questionnaire with little employment of interviews and observation. The researcher sampled 438 employees and 21 managers from the selected municipalities. Quantitative data was analysed using IBM Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 23. Qualitative data was analysed using thematic analysis. The major findings of the study are the following: poor knowledge management programmes in Limpopo municipalities, knowledge sharing among the employees and across the municipalities is not encouraged, knowledge sharing in Limpopo municipalities is affected by both individual and organisational barriers and under-utilisation of information communication technology tools to support knowledge management programmes and practices. Comparatively, the findings of this study to a large extent support what has been recorded in literature. However, the study contradicts a typical mind set of many people that “knowledge is power” and cannot be shared freely. The study recommended to Limpopo municipalities to develop Knowledge sharing strategies that need to be linked to municipal strategic plans; involvement of top management in knowledge management activities; development of knowledge-friendly culture and utilisation of information communication technology tools in support of knowledge sharing. Some recommendations for further study were also provided. Among others, the study recommended that a study on the use of incentive systems as a means of encouraging knowledge sharing be conducted in selected municipalities. - Description: Social work practice in South African societies is of paramount importance because of high levels of poverty and various vulnerabilities. Despite the fact that there is much research on social work and children living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa, the link between social work approaches and vulnerable children has remained silent. Therefore, it was necessary to explore the quality of service delivery and understand how effective are social work interventions towards specific vulnerable children with the aim of enhancing their wellbeing. Thus, the study explored social work interventions towards assisting children living with HIV/AIDS. The study adopted qualitative research approach method for the purposes of collecting data. In-depth interviews were used as methods of data collection to find out the effectiveness and relevancy of social work interventions towards assisting children living with HIV/AIDS. The data was thematically analysed. The main findings indicated a lack of commitment in social work practice and that mirrors a lack of adequate Continuous Professional Development Training (CPDT); Social work practice in Mdantsane is overwhelmed by statutory work; and social work practice as associated with monotonous duties or an inescapable boring work routine. Moreover, the study unearthed that social workers‟ interventions towards assisting children living with HIV/AIDS are ineffective in Mdantsane Nobuhle Unit 8 community due to service delivery constraints faced by social workers, such as lack of specific HIV/AIDS proper care work training of social workers, lack of resources, high caseloads, misconceptions, and poor implementation of governmental policies. Hence, the study recommends the need for more social workers to fill up this shortage. Thus, the study recommended that there should be an indigenous social welfare and social work practice of assisting children infected and affected by HIV/AIDs. Furthermore, the study recommended that social workers should be equipped with local based skills and knowledge so as to be able to practice professionally. The study concluded that, there should be practical interventions looking into the socio-economic and political contexts and challenging the theorization of the practice, but adopting a more pragmatic approach through influencing and lobbying the government to respondent to the children needs.

- Description: Mob justice is a major issue that will continue to occur as long as criminal activities exist. In South Africa, mob justice has become a major challenge for the government, particularly the South African Police Service as well as the society at large. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has partnered with all relevant role-players in the fight against mob justice and other community problems which threaten the safety of inhabitants. However, concerted efforts have also been made by the government to assist the SAPS to address the occurrence and re-occurrence of mob justice by introducing strategies such as visible policing but the problem seems to persist. The study, thus, analyzed the challenges faced by the police that lead to their ineffectiveness in eliminating mob justice. This thesis draws from two theories, namely Structural Violence theory pioneered by Galtung (1969) and Just World Theory (JWT) by Adelstein (1999) to explore the challenges faced by the police in Gqeberha. This study was conducted in the Eastern Cape Province, in Gqeberha within four townships, namely Kwadwesi, Kwazakhele, Motherwell, and New Brighton. The findings gathered by utilizing Focus Group Interviews (FGIs) and semi-structured interviews with a total number of forty-eight (48) respondents comprising of sixteen (16) SAPS members, eight (08) Community Policing Forum (CPF) representatives, four (04) community leaders and twenty (20) community members. This is a qualitative research project in which participants were chosen using purposive sampling. Participants were chosen based on their knowledge and experiences relating to the phenomena being explored. The aim was to gain an in-depth understanding of the challenges encountered by the police in combating mob justice to discover some techniques to improve and strengthen the police service to make communities safer. To analyse the data thematic analysis was utilized. The results of the study indicate that an increase in mob justice in Gqeberha has been reported to be a result of the high rate of crime. However, the fact that people know they will not get arrested for participating in mob justice is one of the concerns that have led to an escalation in mob justice. The study demonstrates that in most incidents the community members have once witnessed in their respective areas, the victims were killed while few survived and in all those incidents only a few arrests were made and in those few arrests, no convictions were made. Based on this issue of arrests, results indicate that the SAPS members are confronting some difficulties in identifying and arresting the perpetrators of mob justice. The reluctance of community members to report mob justice cases and to provide information was found to be the main challenge faced by the police in combating mob justice in Motherwell Cluster precincts. These challenges have been reported to negatively affect police work performance. Further analysis revealed that CPF, community members and community leaders as part of stakeholders who are working together with SAPS are also facing some challenges in addressing this issue of mob justice. The results also indicate that mob justice does not only harm members of the community who are subjected to these occurrences, but also the police, the victims and the perpetrators themselves. Evidence-based techniques to help eradicate mob justice incidents were developed in response to this problem of mob justice. The participants suggested that the police must be provided with adequate manpower, more community patrols and vehicles. It is believed that if the police could act in time and arrest the suspected criminals, a large number of people would be rescued from being killed in mob justice. The respondents also indicated that the police must build good relations with the communities by being visible and transparent in communities. Furthermore, the SAPS participants alluded that when people are sentenced, a community engagement needs to be conducted before those people are released outside as parolees. - Description: The impacts of climate variability have been of global concern for many years. These impacts are affecting economic, social, cultural, agricultural, health and political structures in different countries. Although the impacts of climate variability on agricultural production are being experienced globally, it is generally accepted that developing countries are the worst affected due to a variety of reasons. Given the high susceptibility of developing countries to climate variability, this study maps and analyses the impacts of climate variability on agricultural production, food production, availability and access in Chivi District, Zimbabwe. The study aimed at finding out experiences, so it used a qualitative approach. The study uses in-depth and focus group discussions to collect data. Chivi district is experiencing erratic weather patterns which are impacting agricultural production in general and food production in particular. Consequently, food availability and access is on the decline in the district. Even though smallholder farmers have devised coping and adaptation strategies, this is not sufficient to help them fully deal with the impacts of climate variability. This is due to their limited assets, inadequate technology and climate information among other things. In an attempt to assist these smallholder farmers cope and adapt to the impacts of climate variability, NGOs and Government Departments have instituted a number of community interventions. This assistance includes agricultural extension services, farming input support and provision of climate change information and a lot of other things. In view of these findings, the study recommends the universal adoption and growing of small grain drought resistant crops in climate variability affected Chivi. It further recommends that farmers adopt conservation agriculture, get into partnerships and co-operatives to practice irrigation gardening where those without water sources provide equipment, labour and knowledge. The study also recommends that more climate science research be conducted in Zimbabwe by both NGOs and Government Departments. - Description: The aim of this study was to explore factors which contribute to elder abuse in Mount Frere Town, in the Umzimvubu Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province. A qualitative approach was used to allow for the achievement of the research aim which was to explore contributory factors towards elderly abuse in Mount Frere Town. A purposive sampling approach was used to select participants in accordance with their experiences and required characteristics. A total sample of fourteen participants was selected. The data was obtained through focus group interviews, using an interview schedule (Appendix B, C, D and E) as an interview guide and the interview sessions were all recorded with an audio recorder. Separate interview schedules were used for the focus groups with the elderly participants (Appendix B – English version and D- IsiXhosa version) and the group consisting of caregivers (Appendix C – English version and E – IsiXhosa version). Thematic analysis was used to analyse and interpret results. Eight main themes were identified, namely: Living Conditions, Daily Activities, Age and Gender, Alcohol Consumption, Family Victimization, Offender Related Factors, Elderly Protection, and Intervention. These themes were identified under chapter four and discussed in the subsequent chapter. Respective sub-themes were identified under each theme and were discussed comprehensively. Key to all these themes was that most perpetrators of elderly abuse were family members, relatives and neighbours of the victim. - Description: This study investigated the phenomenon of academic dishonesty among university students using a case study of the University of Fort Hare in South Africa. Objectives of this study were to find out the incidence of academic dishonesty, factors associated with academic dishonesty, the frequency of academic dishonesty and mitigation measures placed to curb academic dishonesty at the University of Fort Hare. A mixed methods approach was used to collect data, which was then interpreted using the social learning theory. The study argues that, academic dishonesty at the University of Fort Hare is mainly entrenched in the dynamic transformations brought about by technological advancement, which has given rise to new forms of academic dishonesty and as well facilitated the existent forms of academic dishonesty. The social learning theory offers an explanation of the acquisition of new behaviour and its maintenance thereof hence it has been adopted as the theoretical framework in this study. Findings of the current study indicated that the institution, like many other institutions globally is affected by academic dishonesty. Apart from that, academic dishonesty in its various forms is significantly high and it continues to soar. Moreover, the study revealed that the institution has adopted a diverse array of measures to curb academic dishonesty. Nevertheless, students continue to engage in academic dishonesty regardless of efforts made by institutions to reduce this epidemic. There is therefore a need to revisit the policies and measures implemented by institutions to curb academic dishonesty in a bid to come up with effective solutions to this problem.

- Description: The aim of this study is to establish the employment-readiness perception of prospective University of Fort Hare Alice campus graduates. To do this, the study determined the capability of these prospective graduates to face the demands of the labor market. In addition, the study also wanted inter alia to find out whether there exist a relationship between prospective graduates perceived level of skills and their readiness to engage in the work environment. Astin’s Input-Environment-Outcome model of student development, which posits that students’ academic development in universities is affected by their own inputs as learners in addition to the institutional environment, has been utilized as the theoretical framework for this study. Hence a number of hypothesis informed by Astin’s model about whether there exist a relationship between perceived output, skills and readiness of prospective graduates for the workplace, on the one hand, and university education/training, on the other, were derived. To test these hypotheses the study utilized a quantitative research approach anchored around a survey design. In fact ample studies, which have investigated the issues of employability skills and prospective graduates’ readiness for work, have adopted this type of research design with a questionnaire as a preferred research instrument. After collecting data through the use of a mainly Likert scale based survey questionnaire, the findings of the study indicated inter alia that the university environment has a direct influence on the input of students to their study and skills acquisition in addition to the fact that faculty influence is directly correlated to students’ output, skills and readiness for employment. Hence the conclusion that for any tertiary institution like the University of Fort Hare to function effectively or optimally, the institutional environment, faculty influence and student input have to satisfy the best assessment criteria at the exit level, such that an output of quality prospective graduates imbued with all employment readiness characteristics can be guaranteed. Self-driven individuals with willingness to involve themselves in lifelong learning, who are capable of self-improvement and of taking advantages of innovative opportunities, are what the country’s economy need. These findings are in agreement with Astin’s model, which proposes that learning development is an interacting system of student input, institutional settings, and the students’ output. Results and conclusions of a significant number of other empirical studies concur with the results of this study. Furthermore the findings of the current study contribute to the graduate work readiness literature in a number of ways. For instance, the work process in modern organizations has been greatly transformed and as such that only high levels of skills, abilities and talented graduates are qualified to fit in such a labor market. The changing demands of the education competitive market have generated a belief that the educational sector will react in ways that are innovative with the aim of both the learning needs and the career objectives for its learners to be reached. Hence it is proposed that tertiary institutions in South Africa make it mandatory for learners to at least have three weeks work placement as one of their requirement for graduation. , Thesis (MSoc) -- Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, 2015
