The cultural uses of these plants should be taken into account when weed legislation in South Africa is considered. Of these species, six have no previous medicinal uses recorded in the literature surveyed and 21 species have additional, previously unrecorded uses. Nine previously unrecorded Xhosa names for plants are documented. Plant use categories and indigenous knowledge is discussed regarding the recorded species. The use of alien plants shows that African traditional healing is not static, but dynamic and adaptive.

- Description: [From introduction] Subtidal research presents numerous challenges that restrict the ability to answer fundamental ecological questions related to reef systems. These challenges are closely associated with traditional monitoring methods and include depth restrictions (e.g. safe diving depths for underwater visual census), habitat destruction (e.g. trawling), mortality of target species (e.g. controlled angling and fish traps), and high operating costs (e.g. remotely operated vehicles and large research vessels. Whereas many of these challenges do not apply or are avoidable in the shallow subtidal environment, the difficulties grow as one attempts to sample deeper benthic habitats. This situation has resulted in a paucity of knowledge on the structure and ecology of deep water reef habitats around the coast of South Africa and in most marine areas around the world. Furthermore, the inability to effectively survey deep water benthic environments has limited the capacity of researchers to investigate connectivity between shallow and deep water habitats in a standardised and comparable fashion.

- Description: The African buffalo (Syncerus caffer Sparrman) is both morphologically and physiologically adapted for grazing (Prins, 1996). However, buffalo populations of the Eastern Cape, South Africa, are confined to reserves dominated by thicket vegetation where grass is sparse (Landman & Kerley, 2001; Tshabalala, Dube & Lent, 2009). Given that the nutritional value of grass deteriorates more rapidly than browse in nonproductive periods (Shipley, 1993), it has been hypothesized that buffalo increase their intake of browse during the dry season (Tshabalala, Dube & Lent, 2009). However, past studies contradict one another (de Graaf, Schulz & van der Walt, 1973; Landman & Kerley, 2001; Tshabalala, Dube & Lent, 2009). de Graaf, Schulz & van der Walt (1973) analysed the rumen contents of buffalo in the Addo Elephant National Park and suggested that buffalo should be considered browsers because of the high proportion of browse in rumen samples. However, their study was restricted to one site during a drought. Landman & Kerley (2001) later found the opposite (grass comprised ~72% of buffalo dung) and criticized the findings of de Graaf, Schulz amp; van der Walt (1973). However, their study was conducted after a period of exceptionally high rainfall. More recently, Tshabalala, Dube & Lent (2009) recorded significantly more browse in the diet of buffalo during the dry season (33%) than the wet season (28%) at the Great Fish River Nature Reserve. We test the assertion that buffalo increase their intake of browse during dry periods, at another site dominated by thicket. We describe the extent to which grass and browse were consumed by buffalo and whether the proportional occurrence changed monthly.

The African elephant has been driven to local extinction over much of its former range, with hunting for meat and ivory and the conversion of elephant habitat to agriculture constituting the major drivers.5 Given the historical decline in elephant numbers, the conservation of this species appears to be a sensible objective.9,13 However, the protection afforded to elephants in confined (usually fenced) reserves across Africa has distinct implications for the management of local species diversity and the heterogeneity of habitats.14,15 Elephants have been shown to have clear impacts on the structure of vegetation, particularly in woodland habitats12,16,17, and these changes may have knock-on effects for sympatric species10,18,19. The effects of elephants on biological diversity in protected areas are of particular concern in light of how expansion in human populations, and the land-use change that follows, places increasing pressure on reserves to preserve biological diversity.9,10. Change within ecosystems is natural and inevitable and large herbivores have been living in an ever-changing environment for millions of years.20 Changes brought on by elephants, therefore, should not automatically be categorised as undesirable, and short-term changes may be part of an overarching trend of long-term stability.8,21 Furthermore, current elephant impacts can only be adequately assessed in the light of historical (on the scale of centuries) benchmarks, for which accurate information is notoriously scant.10,21 The current impacts of elephant populations on vegetation dynamics in some regions may in fact represent a shift towards a more natural historical state.8,21 Finally, much of the detrimental impacts of elephants on habitat structure and diversity, particularly at smaller scales, has resulted from human interventions (such as the erection of fences and the establishment of artificial water points) that have unnaturally confined elephants to localised areas, disrupted seasonal movements and disturbed the natural dynamics of population processes.5,13,22.

- Description: This review article synthesizes the authors' several decades of multidisciplinary natural and social science and applied marine resource management experience in the Asia-Pacific region to examine the strengthening of coastal and marine resource management and conservation using alliances between local communities and external institutions. The objective is to assist the design of resource management and conservation programs that enhance the capacity of coastal communities in Oceania to confront both diminishing marine resources and the effects of climate change by providing guidelines for protecting marine biodiversity and vulnerable ecosystem functions. This article describes a management framework that hybridizes local beliefs and institutions expressed in customary management (CM) with such modern management concepts as marine protected areas (MPAs) and ecosystem-based management (EBM). Hybrid management accommodates the social, political, economic, and cultural contexts of Oceanic communities and, compared with recent or conventional management approaches, can therefore better address fundamental local concerns such as coastal degradation, climate change, sea level rise, weak governance, corruption, limited resources and staff to manage and monitor marine resources, and increasing poverty. Research on the hybridization of management systems demonstrates opportunities to establish context-appropriate EBM and/or other managerial arrangements that include terrestrial and adjacent coastal-marine ecosystems. Formal and informal CM systems are widespread in Oceania and in some parts of Southeast Asia, and if appropriate strategies are employed rapid progress toward hybrid CM-EBM could be enabled.

- Description: In southern Africa over the last twenty years, much attention has been given to the importance of NTFPs for rural livelihoods through their household consumption and sale. They have been classified as having either subsistence consumption or commercial values. These values are mostly related to their utilitarian functions, but recent studies show that NTFPs also hold strong cultural functions. Such cultural functions can play a role in both rural and urban livelihoods; consequently the values of NTFPs may be related to both utilitarian and cultural functions. This paper demonstrates the cultural functions of grass brooms in urban areas in South Africa and the impact of their trade on income generation in rural areas, and discusses the concept of culture as a significant factor in the understanding of the role of NTFPs in livelihoods, and their values.

Emerging research reveals the increasing pressure on this biodiversity with many wild resources continuing to be utilised for livelihood purposes even within urban environments. The Rio conventions, particularly the CBD, call for an integrated approach to conservation that incorporates local environmental knowledge and practices. In a bid to market itself as globally competitive, South Africa’s Curriculum 2005 (C 2005) is primarily focused on Western-based scientific knowledge, which sidelines the contribution of indigenous knowledge systems (IKS) and ignores the holistic nature of indigenous worldviews. - Description: Different types of public urban green spaces (PUGS) contain various natural (such as trees, pools, flowerbeds) and artificial elements (such as benches, play equipment, fountains) which contribute to the enjoyment and experience of users. However, which elements users most require, appreciate or notice has rarely been examined as the basis of their choice for specific PUGS, especially in poorer neighbourhoods and countries, where formal PUGS may be limited. The study was carried out in two towns in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, both characterized by high poverty and unemployment levels, low literacy rates and many people living without basic infrastructure and services. To understand the meanings people, have for specific PUGS elements, formal and informal PUGS and peri-urban municipal commonages were assessed with respect to the natural and artificial elements present. A survey of 360 households was conducted across two towns by targeting PUGS users and households within 100 m from the designated PUGS. Approximately 63% of the respondents visited PUGS, with informal PUGS being the most frequented. However, they were strong negative feelings towards some natural elements because of their unkempt nature. Issues of safety, cultural restrictions and lack of recreational facilities were mentioned as some of the specific deterrents against visiting the closest PUGS among different user and age groups. Most respondents emphasized the need for PUGS that are well laid out with maintained lawns, recreational facilities and open vegetation. Thus, the current design and available features within the studied PUGS do not meet local preferences and needs and thus do not contribute to enjoyment as much as they could. Attention needs to be given to understand and incorporate the elements that invoke positive attitudes among urban residents.

A descriptive research approach was applied to document the emotions, meanings and values associated with landscape elements. - Description: Despite the widespread use of modern medicines, the parallel role of traditional medicine remains popular in both rural and urban areas and among both wealthy and poor African communities in South Africa. A substantial body of literature exists which documents some of the salient characteristics of the trade and use of traditional medicines (Ngubane 1977; Cocks and Wiersum 2002; Cocks and Møller 2002; Cocks and Dold 2006). Mander (1998) estimated that 27 million people used indigenous medicine in South Africa in a decade. The use and trade of plants for medicine is no longer confined to traditional healers but has entered both the informal and formal sectors of the South African economy (Dauskardt 1990, 1991; Cocks and Dold 2000), resulting in an increase in the number of herbal gatherers and traders (Dold and Cocks 2002). The largely informal trade in traditional medicines forms part of multi-million rand ‘hidden economy’ in southern Africa, and it is now bigger than at any time in the past. It is certainly one of the most complex resource management issues facing conservation agencies, healthcare professionals and resource users in South Africa today (Cunningham 1997). Research points towards a trend of increasing harvesting pressures on traditional supply areas linked to a growing shortage in supply of popular medicinal plant species (Williams et al. 1997, 2000; Mander 1998; Dold and Cocks 2002).

- Description: This paper describes the assumptions and results of a study to assess whether cultivation of medicinal plants can serve as a tool for combined biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation. The study was carried out in the Amatola region of Eastern Cape, South Africa, where sustained beliefs in medicinal plant use, also under non-traditional conditions, has resulted in an increase in commercial demands. It was based on the assumption of poverty alleviation not only referring to an increase in income and labour, but also an increase in social capital and human dignity. The study assessed the local perceptions of the use and cultivation of medicinal plants and the need for conservation of these plants, as well as the features of already ongoing cultivation practices and options for increased cultivation. It consisted of participatory assessments in three villages involving around 250 persons and participatory trials with 14 rural women selling medicinal plants on urban markets. The study indicated that the growing demand for medicinal plants is related to the great cultural significance attached to medicinal plants.

- Description: Biodiversity is recognised as an integral part of people's daily livelihoods. This study therefore aims to understand the use of NTFPs at an intricate level by determining what role these resources fulfil in six rural villages and 1011 households' livelihoods. It examines how the use of NTFPs are influenced by intra-household variables, such as wealth and gender, and inter-community variables, such as accessibility to the natural resource. The results reveal that approximately 4453 kg of wild material is used annually per household, of which 1598 kg is used for cultural purposes. The influence of vegetation type and differences between villages are statistically more significant than inter-household variables. At an inter-household level, an increase in the financial status of households did not result in a decrease in the use of natural resources, nor in the quantity of material used.

The importance of policies on protecting cultural diversity and how they relate to the environment is only just emerging at an international level, but in South African we find there is a complete lack of institutional support for rural communities’ attachment to local landscapes. The main objective of this case study is to improve our understanding of the meanings and values that Xhosa people (amaXhosa) of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa attach to their natural landscapes. It is clear that the amaXhosa are still intrinsically connected to their natural environment, in particular the thicket biome that is called ihlathi yesiXhosa (Xhosa forest). Access to places and spaces within the natural environment provides a sense of wellbeing, a link to ancestral spirits, a location for religious rituals, plus a wealth of culturallyinspired uses of specific species and sacred places in the landscape. We suggest that local cultural values could be incorporated into the formal conservation process.

- Description: This paper discusses the current resurgence of interest in the Linda coordination language for parallel and distributed programming. Particularly in the Java field, there have been a number of developments over the past few years. These developments are summarised together with the advantages of using Linda for programming concurrent systems. Some problems with the basic Linda approach are also discussed and a novel solution to these is presented. The power and flexibility of the proposed extensions to the Linda programming model are illustrated by considering a number of example applications, including a detailed case study of visual language parsing.

- Description: Many applications need the ability to do real-time notification when events occur. Often the people who need to be kept aware of events are in a remote location. This paper looks at a bi-directional gateway between networked computers and the GSM short message service. The gateway is implemented as a web service, and uses the Simple Object Access Protocol to facilitate data communication. The service interacts with a database in order to facilitate retrieval of sent or received messages, as well as provide accounting abilities. It is intended as a practical proof-of-concept application demonstrating some ofdemonstrating some of the capabilities of the Simple Object Access Protocol.
