- Description: This thesis presents the first results of a climatology of nighttime thermospheric neutral winds between February 2018 and January 2019 measured by a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) in Sutherland, South Africa (32.2°S, 20.48°E; geomagnetic latitude: 40.7°S). This FPI measures the nighttime oxygen airglow emission at 630.0 nm, which has a peak intensity at an altitude of roughly 250 km. The performance of the Horizontal Wind Model (HWM14) was evaluated by comparing results from HWM14 with the FPI measurements. The results showed that the model had a better agreement with the measurements for meridional component compared to the zonal component. In addition, the HWM14 zonal wind consistently peaked several hours (~3 h) prior to the measured wind, creating what looks like a phase shift compared to the measured wind. An investigation of this apparent phase shift revealed it to be a consequence of a difference in phase shift of the terdiunal tide. Since ionosondes are more prolific with wider temporal and spatial coverage than FPIs, nighttime meridional winds aligned to the magnetic meridian were inferred from the peak height (hmF2) of ionospheric data taken from South Africa ionosonde network using the servo model during February 2018-June 2019. These were compared with FPI measured meridional wind and benchmarked with HWM14 and Magnetic mEridional NeuTrAl Thermospheric (MENTAT) model. The amplitudes and trends of the calculated meridional winds across all four ionosonde stations agreed relatively well with the observed data, especially during the summer months. Furthermore, the results confirmed that the ionosonde station located closest to the FPI, i.e. Hermanus station, had better agreement with measurements compared to the stations located at further distances. The extraction and analysis of atmospheric tides, namely the diurnal, semidiurnal, terdiurnal and 6-hour components from the FPI as well as the long-term tidal winds variations from the thermospheric wind measurements were investigated. The results showed that the semidiurnal peak mostly had the highest peak across all the months, indicating that the semidiurnal tides dominate the dynamic structure of the upper mesosphere at midlatitudes, consistent with previous observation over midlatitudes. Futhermore, the signature of the diurnal tide in the meridional (zonal) wind was stronger in winter (summer) and weaker in summer (winter). Also, semidiurnal tide didn't show any trend with season, while the terdiurnal tide was dominant in summer (zonal) and winter (meridional). Lastly, the 6 hour tide was detected intermittently during the period of the study and had the weakest signature (i.e. lowest amplitudes). , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Physics and Electronics, 2022

- Description: This thesis shows the statistics of atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) observed in the OI emission 557.7 nm at _97 km altitude using an all-sky imager based in Sutherland, South Africa (32.37_ S, 20.81_ E) in the year 2017. The wavelengths were determined using the propagation vector method, velocity was determined using the cross correlation of 1D FFT and the period was determined using the equation that relates wavelength and velocity. It was found that the horizontal wavelength in summer was almost evenly distributed between 10 and 40 km and for autumn, winter and spring were mostly between 10 and 30 km. The favoured speeds were between 40 and 50 m/s in autumn, as well as 30 and 50 m/s in summer, but the AGWs in winter had a bimodal speed distribution of 20 - 40 and 50 - 70 m/s. The majority of periods observed in all seasons were less than 20 minutes with a dominant peak of 5 - 10 minutes in autumn and spring. There was no favoured propagation direction for spring, but AGWs favoured a southeastward propagation in summer, and a southward propagation in autumn and winter. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Physics and Electronics, 2021

- Description: This work describes the synthesis, photophysical and nonlinear optical characterizations of alkynyl Pcs (1, 2, 3, 8 and 9), 1,2,3-triazole ZnPc (4), mercaptopyridine Pcs (5, 6 and 7) and amino Pcs (10 and 11). Complexes 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9 and 11 were newly synthesized and characterized using techniques including 1H-NMR, MALDI-TOF, UV-visible spectrophotometry, FTIR and elemental analysis. The results of the characterizations were in good agreement with their molecular structures, and confirmed the purity of the new molecules. Complex 10 was covalently linked to pristine graphene (GQDs), nitrogen- doped (NGQDs), and sulfur-nitrogen co-doped (SNGQDs) graphene quantum dots; gold nanoparticles (AuNPs); poly(acrylic acid) (PAA); Fe3O4@Ag core-shell and Fe3O4- Ag hybrid nanoparticles via covalent bonding. Complex 11 was linked to Agx Auy alloy nanoparticles via NH2-Au and/or Au-S bonding, 2 and 3 were linked to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) via clicked reactions. Evidence of successful conjugation of 2, 3, 10 and 11 to nanomaterials was revealed within the UV-vis, EDS, TEM, XRD and XPS spectra. Optical limiting (OL) responses of the samples were evaluated using open aperture Z-scan technique at 532 nm and 10 ns radiation in solution or when embedded in polymer mixtures. The analyses of the Z-scan data for the studied samples did fit to a two-photon absorption mechanism (2PA), but the Pcs and Pc-nanomaterial or polymer composites also possess the multi-photon absorption mechanisms aided by the triplet-triplet population to have reverse saturable absorption (RSA) occur. Phthalocyanines doped in polymer matrices showed larger nonlinear absorption coefficients (ßeff), third-order susceptibility (Im [x(3)]) and second-order hyperpolarizability (y), with an accompanying low intensity threshold (Ium) than in solution. Aggregation in DMSO negatively affected NLO behaviour of Pcs (8 as a case study) at low laser power, and improved at relatively higher laser power. Heavy atom-substituted Pcs (6) enhanced NLO and OL properties than lighter atoms such as 5 and 7. Direct relationship between enhanced photophysical properties and nonlinear effects favoured by excited triplet absorption of the 2, 3, 10 and 11 in presence of nanomaterials was established. Major factor responsible for the enhanced nonlinearities of 10 in the presence of NGQDs and SNGQDs were fully described and attributed to the surface defects caused by the presence of heteroatoms such as nitrogen and sulfur. The studies showed that phthalocyanines-nanomaterial composites were useful in applications such as optical switching, pulse compressor and laser pulse narrowing.

- Description: The results of the second part of the Rhodes University Southern Sky Survey at 2.3GHz are presented. The area surveyed extends from 12hOO to 22hOO right ascension between declinations -63º and -24º. The observation technique and data reduction processes are analyzed. Digital data processing techniques used to enhance and display the data are dicussed. The results show that the Galactic emission extends as far as 40º latitude. Filamentary and loop-like structures are found superimposed on this general emission. Many of these features are unidentified as yet. A large region of emission is found to coincide with the Sco-Cen stellar association. A lower limit for the ionizing flux from the stars in the association is derived. All of the non-confused extragalactic sources with flux densities greater than O.5Jy are listed. The flux densities of these sources have been measured and any possible extended features are noted. , KMBT_363 , Adobe Acrobat 9.53 Paper Capture Plug-in

- Description: The 21 cm transition from neutral Hydrogen promises to be the best observational probe of the Epoch of Reionisation. It has driven the construction of the new generation of low frequency radio interferometric arrays, including the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA). The main difficulty in measuring the 21 cm signal is the presence of bright foregrounds that require very accurate interferometric calibration. Thyagarajan et al. (2018) proposed the use of closure phase quantities as a means to detect the 21 cm signal, which has the advantage of being independent (to first order) from calibration errors and therefore, bypasses the need for accurate calibration. Closure phases are, however, affected by so-called direction dependent effects, e.g. the fact that the dishes - or antennas - of an interferometric array are not identical to each other and , therefore, yield different antenna primary beam responses. In this thesis, we investigate the impact of direction dependent effects on closure quantities and simulate the impact that primary antenna beams affected by mutual coupling have on the foreground closure phase and its power spectrum i.e. the power spectrum of the bispectrum phase (Thyagarajan et al., 2020). Our simulations show that primary beams affected by mutual coupling lead to an overall leakage of foreground power in the so-called EoR window, i.e. power from smooth-spectrum foregrounds is confined to low k modes. We quantified this effect and found that the leakage is up to ~ 8 orders magnitude higher than the case of an ideal beam at kǁ > 0:5 h Mpc-1. We also found that the foreground leakage is worse when edge antennas are included, as they have a more different primary beam compared to antennas at the centre of the array. The leakage magnitude is worse when bright foregrounds appear in the antenna sidelobes, as expected. Our simulations provide a useful framework to interpret observations and assess which power spectrum region is expected to be most contaminated by foreground power leakage.

- Description: In this thesis, we present 18 and 21 cm observations of the A773 galaxy cluster observed with the Westerbork radio telescope. The final 18 and 21 cm images achieve a noise level of 0.018 mJy beam‾ 1 and 0.025 mJy beam-1 respectively. After subtracting the compact sources, the low resolution images show evidence of a radio halo at 18 cm, whereas its presence is more uncertain in the low resolution 21 cm images due the presence of residual sidelobes from bright sources. In the joint analysis of both frequencies, the radio halo has a 5.37 arcmin2 area with a 6.76 mJy flux density. Further observations and analysis are, however, required to fully characterize its properties.

- Description: In this thesis we analysed Westerbork observations of the Perseus Galaxy Cluster at 1380 MHz. Observations consist of two different pointings, covering a total of ∼ 0.5 square degrees, one including the known mini halo and the source 3C 84, the other centred on the source 3C 83.1 B. We obtained images with 83 μJy beam⁻¹ and 240 μJy beam⁻¹ noise rms for the two pointings respectively. We achieved a 60000 : 1 dynamic range in the image containing the bright 3C 84 source. We imaged the mini halo surrounding 3C 84 at high sensitivity, measuring its diameter to be ∼140 kpc and its power 4 x 10²⁴ W Hz⁻¹. Its morphology agrees quite well with that observed at 240 MHz (e.g. Gendron-Marsolais et al., 2017). We measured the flux density of 3C 84 to be 20.5 ± 0.4 Jy at the 2007 epoch, consistent with a factor of ∼2 increase since the 1960s.

- Description: An eleven-year series of radio timing observations of 0833- 45 (Vela) and PSR 1641- 45 is presented. During this time, five large spin-ups ("glitches") were observed in 0833- 45 and one in 1641-45. The stellar response to these events is investigated, and the three relat ively long complete inter-glitch intervals in 0833-45 are modeled. The results are of relevance to studies of the interiors of neutron stars. The initial aim of the project - to obtain good observational coverage of large glitches in the Vela pulsar - was successfully achieved, and high quality observations of the periods between glitches were obtained as a by-product. The results of the analysis presented here provide support for the existence of both linear and non-linear coupling in the Vela pulsar, and put a limit on the former in PSR 1641- 45. The recently observed existence of a rapidly recovering component of part of a glitch in Vela was verified in the subsequent glitch, although there is now evidence to contradict the suggestion that this component involves a particular region of the star that is implicated in every glitch. Observations of a recent glitch in the same pulsar have resolved a small component of the spin-up; such a component has not been reported for any other large glitch.

- Description: The Donald C. Backer Precision Array to Probe the Epoch of Reionization (PAPER, Parsons et al., 2010) was built with an aim to detect the redshifted 21 cm Hydrogen line, which is likely the best probe of thermal evolution of the intergalactic medium and reionization of neutral Hydrogen in our Universe. Observations of the 21 cm signal are challenged by bright astrophysical foregrounds and systematics that require precise modeling in order to extract the cosmological signal. In particular, the instrumental leakage of polarized foregrounds may contaminate the 21 cm power spectrum. In this work, we developed a formalism to describe the leakage due to instrumental widefield effects in visibility-based power spectra and used it to predict contaminations in observations. We find the leakage due to a population of point sources to be higher than the diffuse Galactic emission – for which we can predict minimal contaminations at k>0.3 h Mpc -¹ We also analyzed data from the last observing season of PAPER via all-sky imaging with a view to characterize the foregrounds. We generated an all-sky catalogue of 88 sources down to a flux density of 5 Jy. Moreover, we measured both polarized point source and the Galactic diffuse emission, and used these measurements to constrain our model of polarization leakage. We find the leakage due to a population of point sources to be 12% lower than the prediction from our polarized model.

- Description: This thesis discusses the prospect of finding the gravitational dual to the strongly coupled conformal fluids, with a special interest in the quark-gluon plasma. Such a task can be achieved by matching certain physical observables of two apparently different theories that are dually related owing to the fact that the same string theory can be viewed in two different ways. This is particularly useful when one of the theories is intractable while its dual is manageable. We begin by postulating a particular type of gravitational theory from which we determine graviton scattering amplitudes in a special regime of high momentum. Using the gauge–gravity duality dictionary, the graviton scattering amplitudes can be mapped to stress-tensor correlation functions in the gauge theory. One of the outcomes of high-energy scattering experiments involving the quark-gluon plasma is stress-tensor correlator data. This thesis provides an algorithm for matching graviton scattering amplitudes with stress-tensor correlator data which, in principle, can be used to identify the gravitational dual to the quark-gluon plasma. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Physics and Electronics, 2021

- Description: In this thesis an ionospheric tomographic algorithm called Multi-Instrument Data Anal- ysis System (MIDAS) is used to reconstruct electron density profiles using the Global Positioning System (GPS) data recorded from 53 GPS receivers over the South African region. MIDAS, developed by the Invert group at the University of Bath in the UK, is an inversion algorithm that produces a time dependent 3D image of the electron density of the ionosphere. GPS receivers record the time delay and phase advance of the trans- ionospheric GPS signals that traverse through the ionosphere from which the ionospheric parameter called Total Electron Content (TEC) can be computed. TEC, the line integral of the electron density along the satellite-receiver signal path, is ingested by ionospheric tomographic algorithms such as MIDAS to produce a time dependent 3D electron density profile. In order to validate electron density profiles from MIDAS, MIDAS derived NmF2 values were compared with ionosonde derived NmF2 values extracted from their respective 1D electron density profiles at 15 minute intervals for all four South African ionosonde stations (Grahamstown, Hermanus, Louisvale, and Madimbo). MIDAS 2D images of the electron density showed good diurnal and seasonal patterns; where a comparison of the 2D images at 12h00 UT for all the validation days exhibited maximum electron concentration during the autumn and summer and a minimum during the winter. A root mean square error (rmse) value as small as 0.88x 10¹¹[el=m³] was calculated for the Louisvale ionosonde station during the winter season and a maximum rmse value of 1.92x 10¹¹[el=m³] was ob- tained during the autumn season. The r² values were the least during the autumn and relatively large during summer and winter; similarly the rmse values were found to be a maximum during the autumn and a minimum during the winter indicating that MIDAS performs better during the winter than during the autumn and spring seasons. It is also observed that MIDAS performs better at Louisvale and Madimbo than at Grahamstown and Hermanus. In conclusion, the MIDAS reconstruction has showed good agreement with the ionosonde measurements; therefore, MIDAS can be considered a useful tool to study the ionosphere over the South African region.

- Description: Calibration in radio interferometry describes the process of estimating and correcting for instrumental errors from data. Direction-Dependent (DD) calibration entails correcting for corruptions which vary across the sky. For small field of view observations, DD corruptions can be ignored but for wide fild observations, it is crucial to account for them. Traditional maximum likelihood calibration is not necessarily efficient in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenarios and this can lead to ovefitting. This can bias continuum subtraction and hence, restrict the spectral line studies. Since DD effects are expected to vary smoothly across the sky, the gains can be parametrised as a smooth function of the sky coordinates. Hence, we implement a solver where the atmosphere is modelled using a time-variant 2-dimensional phase screen with an arbitrary known frequency dependence. We assume arbitrary linear basis functions for the gains over the phase screen. The implemented solver is ptimised using the diagonal approximation of the Hessian as shown in previous studies. We present a few simulations to illustrate the performance of the solver.

- Description: Particle precipitation involves the injection of energetic particles into the ionosphere which could increase the ionisation and conductivity of the upper atmosphere. The goal of this study was to examine the ionospheric response and changes due to particle precipitation in the region over South Africa, using a combination of groundbased and satellite instruments. Particle precipitation events were identified from satellite particle flux measurements of the Defence Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). Comprehensive studies were done on the events of 5 April, 2000 and 7 October, 2000. Analysis of the data from the satellite instruments indicates that no particle precipitation was observed over the South African region during these events and that it is unlikely to occur during other such events. To validate the data, methods and tools used in this study, precipitation in the South Atlantic anomaly (SAA) region is used. Satellite ion density measurements revealed that strong density enhancements occurred over the SAA region at satellite altitudes during the precipitation events, but this did not occur in the South African region. The measurements also revealed how the ionisation enhancements in the SAA region correlated with geomagnetic and solar activities. Particle precipitation and convective electric fields are two major magnetospheric energy sources to the upper atmosphere in the auroral and the SAA regions. These increase dramatically during geomagnetic storms and can disturb thermospheric circulation in the atmosphere and alter the rates of production and recombination of the ionised species. Ionosonde observations at Grahamstown, South Africa (33.30S, 26.50E), provided the data to build a picture of the response of the ionosphere over the South African region to particle precipitation during the precipitation events. This analysis showed that, within the confines of the available data, no direct connections between particle precipitation events and disturbances in the ionosphere over this region were revealed.

- Description: It is a well documented fact that Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GIC’s) poses a significant threat to ground-based electric conductor networks like oil pipelines, railways and powerline networks. A study is undertaken to determine the feasibility of using artificial neural network models to predict GIC occurrence in the Southern African power grid. The magnitude of an induced current at a specific location on the Earth’s surface is directly related to the temporal derivative of the geomagnetic field (specifically its horizontal components) at that point. Hence, the focus of the problem is on the prediction of the temporal variations in the horizontal geomagnetic field (@Bx/@t and @By/@t). Artificial neural networks are used to predict @Bx/@t and @By/@t measured at Hermanus, South Africa (34.27◦ S, 19.12◦ E) with a 30 minute prediction lead time. As input parameters to the neural networks, insitu solar wind measurements made by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) satellite are used. The results presented here compare well with similar models developed at high-latitude locations (e.g. Sweden, Finland, Canada) where extensive GIC research has been undertaken. It is concluded that it would indeed be feasible to use a neural network model to predict GIC occurrence in the Southern African power grid, provided that GIC measurements, powerline configuration and network parameters are made available.

- Description: The Telecommunications industry in Southern Africa is faced with the problem of theft of the signal carrying copper wire, both from the ground and from telephone poles. In many cases, if the offenders are caught, the prosecuting party has no way of proving that the wire is the property of any one Telecommunication company, as any inked markings on the insulating sheaths have been burned off along with the insulation and protective coatings themselves. Through this work we * describe the problem, * specify the necessary and preferred technical properties of a viable solution, * report the preliminary investigations into the devising of an unambiguous "fingerprinting" of the 0.5 mm wires, including some of those solutions that, upon investigation, appear non-viable, * describe the development and implementation of an electrochemical marker with detection mechanism which has shown in proof-of-principle to work, * outline the road-map of necessary future work.

- Description: Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances (TIDs) are said to be produced by atmospheric gravitational waves propagating through the neutral ionosphere. These are smaller in amplitude and period when compared to most ionospheric disturbances and hence more difficult to measure. Very little is known about the properties of the travelling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) over the Southern Hemisphere regions since studies have been conducted mostly over the Northern Hemisphere regions. This study presents a framework, using a High Frequency (HF) Doppler radar to investigate the physical properties and the possible driving mechanisms of TIDs. This research focuses on studying the characteristics of the TIDs, such as period, velocity and temporal variations, using HF Doppler measurements taken in South Africa. By making use of a Wavelet Analysis technique, the TIDs’ characteristics were determined. A statistical summary on speed and direction of propagation of the observed TIDs was performed. The winter medium scale travelling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) observed are generally faster than the summer MSTIDs. For all seasons, the MSTIDs had a preferred south-southwest direction of propagation. Most of the large scale travelling ionospheric disturbances (LSTIDs) were observed during the night and of these, the spring LSTIDs were fastest when compared to autumn and summer LSTIDs. The general direction of travel of the observed LSTIDs is south-southeast. Total Electron Content (TEC), derived from Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements, were used to validate some of the TID results obtained from the HF Doppler data. The Horizontal Wind Model (HWM07), magnetic K index, and solar terminators were used to determine the possible sources of the observed TIDs. Only 41% of the observed TIDs were successfully linked to their possible sources of excitation. The information gathered from this study will be valuable in future radio communications and will serve as means to improve the existing ionospheric models over the South African region.

- Description: The inadequacies of the current generation of deconvolution algorithms are rapidly becoming apparent as new, more sensitive radio interferometers are constructed. In light of these inadequacies, there is renewed interest in the field of deconvolution. Many new algorithms are being developed using the mathematical framework of compressed sensing. One such technique, MORESANE, has recently been shown to be a powerful tool for the recovery of faint difuse emission from synthetic and simulated data. However, the original implementation is not well-suited to large problem sizes due to its computational complexity. Additionally, its use of proprietary software prevents it from being freely distributed and used. This has motivated the development of a freely available Python implementation, PyMORESANE. This thesis describes the implementation of PyMORESANE as well as its subsequent augmentation with MPU and GPGPU code. These additions accelerate the algorithm and thus make it competitive with its legacy counterparts. The acceleration of the algorithm is verified by means of benchmarking tests for varying image size and complexity. Additionally, PyMORESANE is shown to work not only on synthetic data, but on real observational data. This verification means that the MORESANE algorithm, and consequently the PyMORESANE implementation, can be added to the current arsenal of deconvolution tools.
