Computer control of a barry research chirpsounder
- Authors: Evans, Geoffrey Philip
- Date: 1985
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Masters , MSc
- Identifier: vital:5507 , http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1007495
- Description: This thesis describes the design and development of a computer-based controller together with additional hardware that greatly extends the capabilities of a Barry Research VOS-1 Chirpsounder. The measurement of the virtual height of the ionosphere as a function of frequency using pulse- and frequency-modulated carrier wave (FMCW techniques is described and the concept of the so called "digital" ionosonde is introduced. The modifications required for the standard Chirpsounder to perform as a versatile digital chirp ionosonde are discussed. Simplified block diagrams are used to describe the Controller hardware which is fully described in two comprehensive service manuals which have been included as appendices. Important aspects of the Controller software and data storage formats are described in detail. The emphasis is then placed on system capabilities. An operators' software manual which describes system initialization and operation in terms of system commands is included as an appendix. Results of tests at both Grahamstown, South Africa , and at the SANAE base in the Antarctic are presented.

A geographical analysis of nutrition in the Eastern Cape and Ciskei

- Description: From preface: The primary aim of the thesis is to make an anthropometric assessment of levels of nutrition of black pre-school children in selected communities of the Eastern Cape and Ciskei. The communities are those of black labourers and their families on white-owned commercial farms in the Dias Divisional Council area of the Eastern Cape; a rural community of an area of Ciskei known as the Amatola Basin; and Tsweletsl'lele, a 'closer settlement' or resettlement area in Ciskei. A pilot survey of school entrants in the Albany magisterial district also sheds light on the nutrition of children in the small towns, such as Grahamstown, of the Eastern Cape. Through an analysis of nutritional conditions in these disparate communities, it should be possible to begin to establish the geographical variation of nutrition in the region. Black communities in the metropolitan area of Port Elizabeth are not considered in the thesis, but on-going surveillance in the city, by the author, will elucidate nutritional conditions there. In achieving the primary aim of the thesis, attention will be focussed on inter-community rather than intra-community variation in nutrition. Nutrition may vary within communities (intra-community variation), for example, within different parts of the Dias Divisional Council area. While such variation is 1 ikely to be minimal, as will be discussed in the presentation of results in chapter 6, section A(l), it is in itself important, and present research endeavours within the surveillance programme are being geared to explore this dimension of nutritional variation more fully. Inter-community variation in nutrition provides, however, a more than sufficient focus for the thesis. A secondary aim of the thesis is to explore the relationship between nutritional status and socio-economic conditions prevailing in the surveyed communities. The secondary aim makes it possible to obtain a better understanding of the processes whi ch infl uence the geographical pattern of nutrition. A consideration of socio-economic conditions, both within the communities and within the Eastern Cape and Ciskei as a whole, also provides a context in which the nutrition results can be assessed. The third aim of the thesis is to assess possible applications of the survey results to policy formulation, thereby providing an applied dimension to the work.

- Description: Unemployment has always been and still is a tricky problem for capitalists. On the one hand lots of unemployed workers make it easier for employers to keep wages low. But if there are too many unemployed workers then they might support moves for immediate and fundamental change in the society. Employers and the governments of capitalist countries have tried to solve this in different ways and at different times. But in most countries some income has been given to the unemployed for part of the time they have been without jobs. They have usually done this by providing some kind of benefits paid to the unemployed for a certain limited period of time. 1 lie fund from which these benefits are paid is usually controlled and administered by the government. However, there are many different ways that these benefits can lie financed. Before looking at what happened here in South Africa let us look at the problem of unemployment benefits generally in a capitalist state.

The playing characteristics of American trombones and German-system bassoons

- Description: Preface: South Africa, a country renowned for its mineral wealth has, perhaps manufacturing paradoxically, no musical wind instrument industry of its own as yet. Thus performers, educators and students alike have either to travel to Europe or America to select an instrument, or to import an expensive instrument that may be both unseen and untried, as very few musical instrument dealers are prepared to outlay capital on stock which appeals to a decided minority of their potential customers. Alternately, a purchase of a particular make or model can be made on the basis of a hearsay opinion; at best, the opportunity for first-hand assessment is minimal. It is the trombone of U. S.A. manufacture and the German bassoon which represent the current state of their respective manufacturing arts, and the yardsticks by which their many imitator's efforts are measured. One of the main aims of this Thesis is to describe in objective terms what has been experienced subjectively over the years of involvement with these instruments -- arguably a task similar to that of the art critic, but operating within more positively defined parameters namely, what works for the student and professional. , and what doesn't. The candidate claims credit for introducing the large-bore Bb/F trombone to South Africa in 1961, following with the introduction of the ·first double-valve bass trombone in 1965, and the first in 1979. The first Schreiber bassoons The advantages and trombone and other bassoon and other such instrument with in-line rotors of the new 5000 series larger-bore was likewise introduced in 1981. pitfalls of " doubling" between the wind instruments , and between the winds, are disc ussed at length in the final section of the Thesis.
