- Description: The Namibian curriculum encourages Life Science teachers to integrate indigenous knowledge into their science lessons. Additionally, it also encourages teachers to promote scientific inquiry in their science classrooms. However, it is not clear how Life Science teachers should go about doing this. As a result, science is taught in decontextualised ways and inquiry-based methods are neglected. It is against this background that this study sought to mobilise the indigenous practice of making oshikundu to mediate learning of enzymes and to promote inquiry-based methods. Essentially, an attempt was made to mediate the learning of enzymes through inquiry-based methods using, in particular, the Predict-Explain-Explore-Observe-Explain (PEEOE)approach.The approach entails learners making predictions and providing explanations for their predictions before they do their observations. The study employed a qualitative case study approach underpinned by an interpretive paradigm. It was conducted at two schools in the Omusati Region in Namibia and three Life Science teachers (two from one school and one from a different school) participated in this study.A variety of data gathering techniques such as document analysis, workshop discussions, participatory observation, and journal reflections were used to gather data and for triangulation purposes. A thematic approach to data analysis was adopted and data analysis and interpretation we redone inductively using Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory and Shulman’s Pedagogical Content Kno Knowledge (TSPCK) model was used as the analytical framework to identify and improve the quality of Life Science teachers’ PCK in the topic of enzyme s in particular. Findings from this study revealed that some teachers had a narrow understanding of the concept of scientific inquiry, whereas some demonstrated a better understanding of the concept and how it is used in Life Science classrooms. The findings also revealed that the understanding of the teachers of an inquiry approach and how they understood science should be taught, further influenced their practice ; this was in addition to resource constraints. Furthermore, it was also established that some teachers did not include the concept of enzymes in their teaching. The workshop intervention equipped teachers with the knowledge on an inquiry approach and how to promote scientific inquiry skills in their classrooms. Likewise, the practical demonstration of making oshikundu also equipped the teachers with the knowledge of enzymes and together with the PEEOE approach, how to teach enzyme s using an inquiry approach. Teachers experienced challenges, as they had to use their creative, critical thinking and reasoning skills in order to identify the scientific concepts from the practical demonstration of oshikundu. The study suggests that there is a need for professional development programmes focusing specifically on supporting in-service science teachers’ understanding of inquiry and how to use the inquiry-based approach in their classrooms. Equally, the pre-service science teachers need such preparations during their training. Furthermore, the study also presents that there is a need to engage both pre-service and in-service teachers deeply with the new content of the Life Science syllabus.

- Description: Literature indicates that there is a national crisis about learners who cannot read for comprehension at the primary level. However, there is limited literature that talks about effective remediation programmes in developing countries. This had a negative impact on the Matric results in the past years. Statistics have always shown the rural provinces such as Eastern Cape to be the most affected province with these poor results, due to the low levels of learners’ reading skills. This study focused on the remedial programme on learners’ proficiency in English second language, which was conducted in two township schools in King William’s Town District. This explored the remedial programme that could be used to help learners become proficient readers who could be able to read for meaning and comprehension. A case study research design was used where two township schools were sampled. A qualitative approach located in the interpretive paradigm was used to carry out the study. The purposive and the sampling procedure were used to solicit information from principals, educators, and learners. The data was collected through interviews, observations and focus groups. Its focus was to establish a remedial programme to improve learners’ proficiency in English second language. The findings revealed that a lack of English proficiency has a negative effect on the learners’ performance. The findings also revealed that the repetition of concepts helps the learners to master and increase their vocabulary and comprehension. A need for learner teacher support materials (LTSM) was revealed to equip the educators with knowledge and skills for teaching diversity in the classroom. The study recommends provision for trained remedial educators in all schools to attend to the individual needs of learners appropriately. Universities should include a component of remedial education in the training of educators, as they are the ones expected to remediate the struggling learners. Parents should encourage their children to be actively involved in learning the language of teaching and learning.

- Description: Historically the education system in Namibia was shaped by the policies of the apartheid ideology (Amukugo, 1993). During that time, authority and responsibility were centralised and teachers were not part of the decision making process. By then, most people expected to be told what to do and would not initiate something on their own, a culture inherited that even exists today. In addition, opportunities were not given to teachers to develop as leaders. While Namibians have this history on record, the fact remains that the way in which apartheid laws were put in place, the ideological basis of the policy of apartheid and its impact, was not supportive of the ideas of democracy that Namibia is advocating for today. Despite a number of series of policy guidelines and directives issued to guide the development of a democratic culture in the education sector, less is happening about the leadership of teachers in schools. This stimulated me to conduct an activity theoretical interventionist research, aimed at exploring what opportunities there are for teachers to develop as leaders. This study is a case study, operating from a generative standpoint. The study was conducted in a semi-urban secondary school in Windhoek, Khomas Region, Namibia. The study took a formative intervention approach as it sought to bring about change to practice in the case study school and also to contribute to a body of knowledge in the field of study. This qualitative study employed interviews, observations, document analysis and WhatsApp messaging as data generation tools. Crystallised data revealed multiple realities that demonstrated meaningful and trustworthy data. To analyse data the study employed inductive and abductive analysis to make data meaningful to the reader. Thus, to explore teacher leadership development in a semi-urban secondary school, Change Laboratories Workshops was used as a method to gather and analyse data, as underpinned by 2nd generation CHAT. Grant’s (2017) model of teacher leadership was also used to analyse the data and indicate where teacher leadership roles were mostly visible from all four zones. The findings revealed that there were different understandings of the notion of teacher leadership. It was understood as the possession of certain qualities, a managerial role, an involvement in the decision-making process and a form of social responsibility. It was also revealed that teachers led in all four zones (Grant, 2017b), however participants were not active in all the roles. High participation was noticed in zone one, within the classroom; zone two, leading in curricular and extra-curricular activities and zone four, leading beyond the school into the community. This study explored teacher leadership development and at length identified the conditions that constrained and enabled teachers to develop as leaders in a secondary school. The factors that constrained teacher leadership in the case study school were: lack of time, demanding workloads and other commitments, lack of interest in extramural activities and SMT support for initiatives. Fear and unwillingness to take on leadership roles, narrow views on leadership and ingrained traditional leadership structures, limited leadership capacity building initiatives and the absence of clear educational policies on teacher leadership were also identified. The high involvement in zone one, two and four were attributed to some mechanisms the school put in place to promote teacher leadership, such as through various committees set-up, as well as a culture of mutual care and love. During the change laboratory workshops, teachers opted to be trained in leadership-related matters and to revive the CPD committee.

- Description: This study investigated the implementation of Grade R admission policy in Mopani District in Limpopo Province and focussed on four primary schools in Makhutswe circuit which has got Grade R classes. The interpretive paradigm was applied as the chosen methodology for the study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group interviews. A review of secondary sources to corroborate the gathered information was also used. Data analysis was done using thematic analysis through emerging themes from the transcribed data from the interviews. The participants were purposively selected for the sample of this study. These included 1 principal per school, 1 Grade R educator per school, 5 SGB members per school, and 2 admission committee members per school. Through the participant’s responses from the schools under study, a transcript was formulated, coded, and categorized in view of the implementation of the Grade R Admission Policy in primary schools. The study found out that the admission policy for Grade R learners was not properly implemented in most of the primary schools due to lack of understanding how the policy must be implemented. It was also revealed that, most of the principals together with their admission committee members tend to use their own discretion concerning the admission of Grade R learners in schools. It further emerged that some of the learners denied admission despite the existing legislation that proscribes that every child has the right to education. Furthermore, the study found out that the district office did not involve the primary teachers before formulating the policy. Hence, the participants showed that they did not have good and proper understanding of the implementation process neither were they well versed about what entailed monitoring the admission policy. As a result, Department of Education resorted to coming up with ways of continuously training and conducting workshops for the educators before they can admit learners to Grade R.

- Description: The study explored the potential of Geography fieldwork projects to develop learners’ action competence in response to social-ecological problems in two schools in the Omusati and Oshana Education Regions. The study investigates ways in which learners’ activities create an opportunity for them to act for the environment. That is, to investigate ways in which learners can be shaped into environmentally literate citizens who act for the environment. A total of 43 grade 10 learners and two grade 10 Geography teachers participated in this qualitative, interpretive case study. Data was generated through document analysis, focus group interview with learners, semi-structured interviews with educators, and participant observations. Such data were analysed into three phases, first inductively and then abductively using Jensen’s (2004) Investigations, Visions, Actions and Change (IVAC) model to produce analytic statements that form the basis of the research findings. The study found that Geography fieldwork projects foster understandings of environmental problems in a local area. Through fieldwork projects, schools initiate indirect environmental actions, however, some environmental problems are too large or complex to be resolved by the actions initiated by learners. Based on these findings, the study identifies Geography fieldwork as an opportunity to create a community of practice in effort to address socioecological concerns. The study further recommends that learners should be allowed to engage with both social investigative actions and technical, scientific investigative actions when doing project work.

- Description: Environmental sustainability and agriculture are key development and transformational concerns in South Africa while rural development and youth unemployment are key national issues pertinent in the Eastern Cape which ranks in the top three provinces for both concerns. As a formative interventionist researcher, working in a singular case study with youth in Lenye village located in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, I sought to investigate the following: Can, and if so, how can expansive learning facilitated by a change laboratory intervention contribute to the development of youth as potential value creators for rural development? This was investigated through the following sub questions: 1) What value is created at each point of the expansive learning process of the change laboratory process and for who? 2) What value can still be created at each point of the expansive learning process of the change laboratory? 3) How is that value created via an expansive learning process? I collected data as I participated as a youth member through: extended contextual profiling via a focus group interview, individual interviews, note taking and document analysis. Furthermore, I attended village meetings, youth meetings and emergent youth development/youth in agriculture/agriculture opportunities. Additionally, change laboratory workshops were conducted and I used audio recordings and notes to capture data. The data collected was then analysed through second generation Cultural Historical Activity Theory using the concepts of immediate, potential, applied, realised and reframing value. In conclusion, the expansive learning process may contribute to the development of rural youth as value creators for sustainable development through youth development, agriculture and community development. All forms of value were created along the expansive learning process for the formative interventionist researcher, the Lenye youth and the greater Lenye youth community. All forms of value may still be created for the Lenye youth, the formative interventionist researcher and the greater Lenye youth community.

- Description: Parents in South Africa have been given the privilege and right to choose the language of learning and teaching (LoLT) for their children. However, because of the advantages associated with fluency in English, parents tend to choose English as the language of instruction, often without being informed as to the disadvantages of learning in an additional language. The use of an additional language as the main language of instruction can potentially negatively affect the academic performance of learners, as they are often unable to express themselves efficiently and comprehend instructions given in this additional language. In an effort to assist learners who may be struggling with learning in an additional language, this study explored the use of drawing to support the teaching and learning of an additional language in Foundation Phase classrooms. A qualitative approach was adopted in order to gain insights of Foundation Phase teachers regarding the use of drawing to promote the teaching and learning of English as an additional language. The methods that were used to elicit data in this study included focus groups, an open-ended questionnaire, field notes, reflective journal entries, and document analysis. The participants in this research were 18 Foundation Phase teachers from a school in the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth. The collected data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings of this study revealed that drawing is both an expressive and receptive visual language that has the potential to promote the teaching and learning of an additional language. However, for this additional language to be effective, teachers should create a stimulating environment and encourage learners to use this language in their classrooms. Teachers should also find creative ways to accommodate drawing within their planned teaching and learning activities in the classroom.

- Description: The Tsitsa Project focusses on land use management and rural livelihoods in the Tsitsa River catchment in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It is funded by the Department of Environmental Affairs and the environmental monitoring initiative is implemented by Rhodes University, where I am employed as the catchment coordinator. This study explores the environmental monitoring initiative within the bigger Tsitsa Project. Community members in the catchment monitor sediment transportation in the Tsitsa River and its tributaries, which originally became of interest because it is proposed that a dam (Ntabelanga Dam) be established here. This study aims to understand citizen environmental monitoring in the Tsitsa Project; what the project managers regarded as benefits; and how the monitors themselves perceived benefits of participating as monitors. A realist approach was followed, in order to understand the connections between the context and the mechanisms in the project, and how these combined to result in the outcomes observed. Realist research emphasises the importance of context in shaping outcomes such as the achieved benefits of citizen monitoring. Data was collected using a case study method, where each individual monitor and their particular context, was regarded as a case. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 17 monitors and five Tsitsa Project staff; this was supported by field notes and the reviewing of project documents including field reports. The realist analysis looked at the context of the monitors in general and the mechanisms applied by the project in recruiting, training and managing the monitors. A second layer of mechanisms was identified as those responses from the monitors to what the project was introducing to them. Outcomes were both positive and negative, including how long monitors remained in the initiative, what benefits they derived from the process, and what potential benefits they did not achieve. This included lost opportunities to provide recognition for skills and experience gained. Recommendations are made regarding the recruitment, training and management of monitors, to optimise benefits for the monitors, the host institution and the initiative’s staff. The study is significant because of its particular yet representative characteristics and it will assist both the Tsitsa Project, which aims to expand its citizen environmental monitoring initiative, as well as wider Natural Resource Management Programmes in South Africa. It is also hoped that it will contribute to the literature on environmental monitoring as a little researched form of citizen science globally.

- Description: Recent socioecological approaches in Environmental Education acknowledge the complexity of “real-world situations”, which include environmental problems. One response to the challenge of enabling people to develop sustainability is the key competencies in sustainability framework. It can be faced as a guide to planning Environmental Education actions. On the other side, art practices hold potential to expand learning in varied ways. Art can offer the strategies employed in learning processes directed to sustainability, constituting the field of eco-art education. This research aims to investigate the integration of the visions of the key competencies in sustainability and the eco-art education in an Environmental Education project at high school level. Horta and Gastronomia (Vegetable Garden and Gastronomy) is an extra-curricular activity which happens every year at Irmão Jaime Biazus high school in Porto Alegre, Brazil. It addresses food security and sustainability associating the garden, the kitchen and exploration of sustainability issues using eco-art strategies. Action research approach is used, defining two research cycles to explore the effectiveness of eco-art for the development of key competencies in sustainability. The first cycle focuses on the eco-art activities applied in Horta and Gastronomia (2017 group) while the second cycle deals with a post-project intervention designed to observe indicators of the sustainability competencies and further explore eco-art strategies. This study adds to the field of sustainability competencies by exploring teaching strategies through eco-art education. Insight into key competencies in sustainability is given by presenting the investigation of the group of students about a situation of their reality. The activities implemented, classified according to their objectives, are contextualized regarding the competencies and in learning sequences. This research also contributes to the development of the sustainability competencies framework by applying the theory to a basic education level, adapting the work originally proposed to higher education contexts.

- Description: The Government of Malawi and its education partners are currently implementing the National Education Policy (2016) and the National Strategy on Inclusive Education (2017-2021). My study explored how mainstream secondary teachers interpret policies and strategies, and transition to the practice of supporting learners with physical disabilities. Previous studies revealed policy-to-practice disparities in the Malawian inclusive secondary education but did not proffer teacher-oriented strategies that can mitigate the disparities and enhance inclusive education. My study argued that effective strategies that could lessen policy-to-practice mismatches and advance inclusive education primarily rest with mainstream teachers, as they mediate policy and practice. This study drew on Clough and Corbett’s disability studies critique and Urie Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological systems perspective to form theoretical and analytical frameworks for understanding the problem and discussing the findings. The study generated primary data from the Lower Shire districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje in Malawi. Thirty-three teachers, randomly selected from four schools, responded to questionnaires. In-depth, face to face interviews were conducted with purposely selected teachers from the same four schools. The study also generated secondary data from a review of policy documents. The findings showed that policy directives are shifting inclusive education from social perspectives to political perspectives, whereby mainstream teachers regard national policies and strategies as political responses to demands for inclusion. The findings further showed that teachers’ practices are moving away from the provision of special needs to the promotion of inclusive needs, whereby inclusive education benefits all learners. The study found that some teachers are resisting inclusive education, and would like learners with physical disabilities to return to special schools, thus controverting policy directives. As a way forward, this study recommended that future policy formulation and implementation in the Malawian mainstream secondary education should consider the bioecological systems approach, whereby policymakers systematically interact with the mainstream secondary teachers to improve their perspectives, competencies and practices on inclusive education.

- Description: Although science education in Namibia receives much attention, learners’ performance is low in subjects such as Physical Sciences. The topic of Forces is among the topics in Physical Sciences where learners perform poorly. The provision of basic education in Namibia faces many challenges. One of these is that many teachers are not fully qualified for teaching the subjects they currently teach. Another (possibly related) challenge is that the majority of teachers in Namibian schools rely heavily on school textbooks when planning their lessons. In addition, learners use school textbooks as learning aids. The textbooks are developed and published in the private sector and based on the national curriculum statements. Quality of education has been amongst the major goals of education in Namibia. For quality assurance purposes, school science textbooks have to undergo a formal evaluation process. School textbooks, especially science textbooks, are multimodal. This means that they are designed with various modes, such as the textual and visual, often used in expressing scientific meanings. Literature reveals the textual and visual as individual modes having their own affordances, however, when integrated in school science textbooks contribute to strengthened meanings. No study published was found in Namibia or elsewhere that focused on analysing the intrasemiotic and intersemiotic sense relations of the textual and visual modes in Namibian school Physical Sciences textbooks. This study therefore aimed at contributing to filling this knowledge gap. The research is a qualitative case study and employed the interpretive paradigm. The selected Physical Sciences textbooks that constitute the data in this study were explored in depth via document analysis. Related textual and visual modes in the Physical Sciences textbooks were analysed in order to help answer the research questions of the study. Systemic Functional Linguistics was employed as the theoretical underpinning for this study. In this study, the sense relations were explored in terms of the sense relation themes which were coded and developed from common features of scientific discourse. The results reveal that scientific knowledge within the textual mode in the topic of Forces is communicated mostly through synonymy and repetition while within the visual mode it is mostly through antonymy, collocation, and synonymy. This contributed to meaning potential in the topic of Forces for the three Physical Sciences textbooks. The results further indicated that the overall cohesion within the textual and visual modes in the topic of Forces is achieved since repetition, which is the most direct form of lexical cohesion together with synonymy, collocation, and antonymy which are aspects of cohesion, occurred most frequently within these modes. This result further indicates that meaning potential in the topic of Forces in the three Physical Sciences textbooks were strengthened. While some sense relations occurred most frequently within individual modes, they were less frequent in other modes and vice versa. This indicates that different modes have different affordances. Finally, it was found that combining the textual and visual modes in the topic of Forces contributes to intersemiotic complementarity being achieved through the sense relations of collocation, hyponymy, and meronymy. , Thesis (MEd) -- Education, Education, 2021

- Description: The Department of Basic Education (DBE) examiners’ diagnostic reports for 2012-2019 indicate that National Senior Certificate (NSC) learners mostly perform poorly in examination questions based on scientific investigations. The low performance by learners in these questions has been attributed to the failure by teachers to effectively mediate the learning of scientific concepts due to lack of science laboratories or poorly resourced laboratories in most rural schools. As a result, most learners are finding that scientific concepts are decontextualized and hence abstract. Thus, this study explored making use of Virtual Lab to mediate learning of scientific investigations using the topic Energy transformations. The study was located within an interpretive paradigm and a qualitative case study approach was employed. The study was conducted in four different rural schools in the Joe Gqabi district and seven Grade 11 Life Sciences teachers participated. Data was generated using semi-structured questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, lesson observation, workshop discussions, and journal reflections. The study was informed by Vygotsky’s (1978) Socio-Cultural Theory (SCT) as the theoretical framework, and Thompson and Mishra’s (2006) Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) as the analytical framework. The results of this study showed that most educators have a positive predisposition towards the integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in their practice. The study found that using the Virtual Lab to teach Life Sciences has several benefits such as safe environment for conducting experiments; convenience and accessibility; positive teacher and learner attitudes and improvement on learner performance; elimination of physical limitations of a real lab; and availability top-class lab equipment and up-to-date reagents. The study also revealed some shortcomings that were associated with the use of the Virtual Lab. These are; lack of lab partner and peer-learning; and lack of direct supervision by a more knowledgeable facilitator. This study concluded that using the Virtual Lab enhances the quality of teaching scientific experiments in the selected under-resourced rural secondary schools. The study recommends the adoption of the Virtual Lab as a viable alternative to the conventional lab.

- Description: Results of international assessments conducted with South African learners, both in primary and secondary schools, suggest that South African learners underperform in mathematics (Spaull, 2013). While there are numerous explanations for this, one of the key explanations is that teachers are deemed to have inadequate knowledge of both mathematics content and pedagogy. Poor content and pedagogical knowledge are indications that teachers are not adequately trained to teach mathematics (Green, 2011). To improve teachers' content and pedagogical knowledge, well-planned and researched professional development programmes need to be put in place. Current professional development opportunities that centre on workshops are not working as they provide little opportunity for teachers to connect the workshop content to the contexts in which they teach. Through a collaboration between the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA), the Lesson Study approach is being introduced to support teachers' professional development. This research seeks to research this approach within the context of Foundation Phase mathematics education. The research asks: How does Lesson Study contribute to the development of teachers' mathematics content and pedagogical content knowledge? Two sub-questions were developed to support the main question: • What mathematics content knowledge do teachers develop as the engage in LS? • What pedagogical content knowledge do teachers develop as they engage in LS? Using a qualitative interpretivist case study approach, I worked collaboratively with four Grade 1 teachers from two schools. Data was generated through observations, semi-structured interviews and document analysis as we engaged in the Lesson Study process. The Mathematics Knowledge for Teaching (Ball, Thames & Phelps, 2008) and the Knowledge Quartet (Rowland, Turner, Thwaites & Huckstep, 2009) frameworks were used as analytic and explanatory tools in this research. This study's findings showed that participation in the interactive cycles of Lesson Study developed the teachers’ confidence, their pedagogical content knowledge and skills and provided them with the opportunity to collaborate and reflect on their knowledge. My assumption is that the reason why learners are challenged with understanding the topic of chemical changes could be due to the way this topic is taught. It is against this background that this study explored how grade 9 Physical Science teachers mediated learning of the topic of chemical changes. The study is underpinned by an interpretive paradigm. Within the interpretive paradigm, a qualitative case study research design was employed. It was conducted at two different schools in the Otjozondjupa region with two Physical Science teachers. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, lesson observations, stimulated recall interviews, and teachers’ reflections. The study is informed by Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory together with Shulman’s pedagogical content knowledge as the theoretical frameworks. A thematic approach to data analysis was adopted. That is, qualitative data were analysed inductively to come up with sub-themes to form themes. Moreover, validation and trustworthiness were completed through data triangulation, member checking, and watching videotaped lessons with the participants. The findings of this study revealed that the topic of chemical changes has many examples which can be used during mediation. Teachers seemed to be aware of integrating learners’ experiences into their lessons. Furthermore, they were aware that they should improvise resources during mediation of learning. In contrast, during lesson observations, the findings revealed an imbalance between this awareness and the actual knowledge of using easily accessible materials, and the elicitation and integration of prior knowledge throughout the science lessons. Moreover, hands-on practical activities were lacking in the mediation process and instead, traditional methods of teaching tended to dominate. Nonetheless, teachers’ reflections influenced them to analyse and strengthen their lessons. Thus, the study recommends that there is a need for teachers to have mentorships and platforms which can expose them to the knowledge of different types of easily accessible materials. This might strengthen their PCK. - Description: Anecdotal evidence from my 10 years’ experience teaching Grade 9 Physical Science in Namibian schools revealed learners’ difficulty with making sense of chemical bonding. The Junior Secondary examiners’ reports in recent consecutive years (2014, 2015, 2016 & 2017) also revealed this challenge among Grade 10 learners (Namibia. Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture [MoEAC], 2017). The language of learning and teaching (LoLT) for most school subjects (including Physical Science) in Namibia is English, which is taken as a second language by most learners (Kisting, 2011). The results of the English Language Proficiency test written by all principals and teachers in Namibia show that most are not proficient in this language (Kisting, 2011). This has raised concern as to how teaching of content subjects may be undertaken effectively with English as the LoLT. In Namibia, chemical bonding is part of the chemistry section of Physical Science, taught as a sub-topic under the Matter section, where the nature, characteristics, and behaviour of three states of matter are explained. The difficulty students have with chemical bonding is identified as being due to complex chemical concepts (Chittleborough & Mamiala, 2006), and the specialised language of the topic these concepts involve (Gilbert & Treagust, 2009). Additionally, this difficulty may be ascribed to lack of suitable pedagogic approaches, which is linked to science teachers not being fluent in the LoLT. Despite this link, Johnstone (1982) posits that addressing the challenge of teaching and learning chemical knowledge requires teachers’ understanding of three levels of representation: macroscopic, sub-microscopic, and symbolic. Addressing this challenge may be accomplished by using multimodality in teaching, which is achievable via intersemiosis of different semiotic modes, drawing from Systemic Functional Linguistics. This is due to non-linguistic modes also having the potential to make meaning as language does, and the fact that language alone cannot fully enable effective meaning-making in discourses that are inherently multimodal, such as science. Some studies have suggested that the intersemiosis of visual and verbal semiotic modes has the potential to enable more meaning-making of scientific discourse than either of these two alone. The study reported on in this thesis has built on such previous studies in order to explore the influences of a visual-verbal intersemiotic complementarity teaching approach on Grade 9 Namibian learners’ sense-making of chemical bonding. No studies from Namibia exploring these influences on Grade 9 learners could be found. This revealed the knowledge gap that this study aimed to contribute to filling. I accomplished this goal by embarking on a two-cycle action research study. The first cycle followed a traditional teaching approach and assessment, whereas the second cycle, the intervention, included a visual-verbal intersemiotic complementarity teaching approach and assessment. I achieved visual-verbal intersemiotic complementarity teaching and assessment by coordinating spoken and written language with visuals in the form of diagrams and physical models. The critical paradigm was adopted to explore the influences of this pedagogic approach, with the underlying aim of exploring the intervention approach for bringing about a change in learners’ sense-making of chemical bonding, compared to traditional approaches that do not consider intersemiosis. This study is informed by Vygotsky’s (1978) social constructivism to account for learning as a product of social construction, and Halliday’s (1978) Systemic Functional Linguistics to account for the role played by semiotic modes in making meanings. This study involved collecting qualitative data that were accessed via document analysis, structured lesson observation, the teacher’s and learners’ reflective journals, and the pre- and post-test. Collecting these data was facilitated by a critical friend. The results reveal a positive influence of the visual-verbal intersemiotic complementarity teaching approach on Grade 9 Namibian learners’ sense-making of chemical bonding. This influence was realised in the noticeable shift from the learners’ discourse (use of talk and visuals) being perceptual (which is less scientific) to being idea-based (which is more scientific). Learners were also found to be self-motivated and keen to learn complex chemical bonding concepts after the intervention – another sign of their making sense of the topic. The implications of this study include that visual-verbal intersemiotic complementarity should be considered a pedagogic approach to chemical bonding by curriculum developers and reviewers, teacher training institutions, and science textbook authors. , Thesis (MEd) -- Faculty of Education, Education, 2021

- Description: This research project is an interventionist case study, oriented in the interpretive paradigm, which aims to investigate how selected Grade 7 participants develop conceptual understanding in solving algebraic problems as a result of participating in screencast interventions. The aim of my screencast intervention programme, which lies at the heart of this study, is to develop practices, inter alia, of how such devices and software may be “used to develop conceptual rather than procedural or decorative knowledge” (Larkin & Calder, 2015:1) in solving linear equations. The planned intervention was delivered in the form of a series of screencasts: these take the form of audio-video lessons with an emphasis on the visual impact, and were recorded using an application called Explain Everything. The screencast interventions were delivered via Google Classroom and included animations supported by such conceptual explanations of early algebra as are relevant to Grade 7 students, and in line with the South African Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements - Department of Education, 2011. The fundamental components of an early algebraic equation that would be relevant to a Grade 7 student were considered and used to develop an analytic framework. This was based on a taxonomy designed according to four identified “clusters” in order to analyse the workings of the purposefully selected Grade 7 participants who were video recorded and questioned in a talk-aloud interview while they completed a post-intervention pencil-and-paper test. What emerges from this research project is that there is a significant need for specific and concentrated technology-based techniques, such as the interventions undertaken here, and that exploration and development in the field could benefit the delivery of a pedagogy for algebra. The pedagogical methods implemented and studied in the form of screencasts proved to be successful and were well received by the learners particularly in relation to the conceptualisation of “symbol sense” and transformation in early algebra. The structure and design of the screencast interventions were important in supporting the acquisition of these concepts and were demonstrated to be worthwhile tools for an epistemological application in a classroom or teaching context. , Thesis (MEd) -- Rhodes University, Faculty of Education, Education, 2021

- Description: The current situation of teaching and learning science in Namibia is of great concern since it does not seem to take into consideration learners’ socio-cultural backgrounds. As a result, learners are finding that science is not relevant to their everyday life experiences and hence are not motivated to learn it. This is compounded in part by the fact that the Namibian curriculum seems to be silent on how science teachers should include learners’ socio-cultural backgrounds, for example, local or indigenous knowledge in their teaching repertoires. It is against this background that in this study I explored how mobilising the cultural practice of a traditional blast furnace (mudukuto) as an approach enables and/or constrains learners’ motivation to learn science and make sense of the concept of malleability. This is a qualitative case study underpinned by a combination of interpretive and Ubuntu paradigms. It was carried out in a rural school in Namibia, Kavango West Region, where I am currently teaching. The participants in the study were grade 9 learners and one expert community member. Focus group interviews, participatory observation, learners’ reflections, and stimulated recall interviews were used to gather qualitative data. Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory was used as a theoretical framework and Ogunniyi`s Continuity Argumentative Theory (CAT) was used as analytical framework or lens to analyse the data. A thematic approach to analyse data was employed. That is, qualitative data were analysed inductively to come up with sub-themes and themes. The findings of the study revealed that the traditional furnace motivated the learners involved in this study to learn science and learners were able to extract science concepts on malleability from the traditional practice. The implication for this study is that when science is related to learners’ daily life or real-world experiences, they are enabled to bridge the gap from what they learn at home or in the community with school science. - Description: The “South African education system is grossly inefficient, severely underperforming and egregiously unfair” (Spaull, 2013, p.3). In particular, grave concerns with learner performance in mathematics in South Africa are well documented (e.g., Taylor, 2008; Spaull, 2013; Venkat & Spaull, 2015). There are various explanations for the poor state of learner performance in mathematics in South Africa. Two of the explanations that relate closely to my research interest are teachers’ insufficient mathematics content and pedagogical knowledge, and inappropriate professional development. This study aims to ascertain how a collaborative intervention can develop teachers’ mathematics and pedagogical content knowledge as they focus on developing learners’ foundational number sense. Cultural Historical Activity Theory, together with Mathematics Knowledge for Teaching (Ball et al., 2008) and the Knowledge Quartet (Rowlands & Turner, 2007) frameworks, provide the explanatory and analytic tools for the research. The research is a qualitative case study underpinned by an interpretivist orientation. The study was conducted at a township public primary school in the Northern Cape. Three Grade One teachers participated in the research. Data was collected through interviews, classroom observations, and videos of collaborative lesson planning and reflection sessions. A key finding emerging from this research is that the teachers had the necessary mathematics content knowledge to teach Grade One mathematics. Despite this and in contrast to it, they lacked adequate pedagogical content knowledge required to develop learners’ number sense. To develop their pedagogical content knowledge, they required the intervention of a ‘more knowledgable other’ (Vygotsky, 2008). Several contradictions and tensions emerged from the research. For example, the teachers expressed that the opportunity to work collaboratively was beneficial, but it was evident that they were familiar with and accomplished in planning and working together. - Description: Literature has revealed that indigenous learners, especially in many African nations are subjected to learning school science in unfamiliar contexts. Learners in Namibia where this study was conducted are no exception. In consequence, learners experience cognitive conflict between school science and the experiences learnt at home and in the community. This is exacerbated, in part, by the fact that science teachers do not seem to know how to integrate indigenous knowledge in their science teaching. As an attempt to address this problem, some scholars call for the integration of indigenous knowledge into the science curriculum to provide a much needed context for learning science. It is against this background that this study sought to use the indigenous technology of dyeing and weaving baskets as a cultural tool to mediate learning of chemical and physical changes. The findings of the study revealed that all the participating teachers in this study had never been exposed to ideas on how to integrate indigenous knowledge in their science teaching. As a result, they all embraced and valued the indigenous technology of dyeing and weaving as relevant and useful in the teaching and learning of chemical and physical changes.
