- Description: Third order nonlinear optical properties were determined for phthalocyanine complexes 1–10 containing In, Ga and Zn central metals and tetra- or octa-substituted with benzyloxyphenoxy, phenoxy, tert-butylphenoxy and amino groups at peripheral or non-peripheral positions. The phthalocyanines were embedded in poly (methyl methacrylate) polymer in the presence of CdTe quantum dots. All complexes 1–10 were studied in the presence of CdTe quantum dots and embedded in poly (methyl methacrylate) to form thin films. Complex 3 tetrasubstituted with tert-butylphenoxy groups at non-peripheral positions was also studied in the presence of CdS, CdSe quantum dots, fullerenes, single walled carbon nanotubes. Third order nonlinear optical parameters generally increase for Pcs in the presence of CdTe quantum dots.

- Description: Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a promising approach for environmental remediation from contaminants including microorganisms and organic pollutants. In this work, hematite nanofibers are fabricated and modified with a novel monosubstituted Pc (4) as well as an asymmetrical tetrasubstituted Pc (5) with the aim of creating hybrid photocatalysts. The photocatalytic activities of the unmodified and phthalocyanine modified hematite nanofibers were compared based on their efficiencies in the photoinactivation of S. aureus and photooxidation of methyl orange. For both applications, the hybrid nanofibers were found to be more efficient photocatalysts than the unmodified hematite nanofibers. Comparison of the modified nanofibers (4-Fe2O3 and 5-Fe2O3) showed that they have comparable antibacterial activity while the 5-Fe2O3 nanofibers are the best for the photooxidation of methyl orange. The singlet oxygen generation efficiency, high activity, versatility, regenerability and thus reusability of the fabricated hybrid nanofibers makes them ideal candidates for real life water treatment studies.

- Description: This work reports on the fabrication and modification of electrospun polymer free silica nanofibers (SiO2 NFs) with the aim of creating heterogeneous antibacterial catalysts. The optical and photophysical properties of the obtained NFs i.e. bare SiO2, Ag-SiO2, Pc-SiO2 and Pc@Ag-SiO2 NFs (Pc = phthalocyanine) were compared and reported. The singlet oxygen quantum yields of the Pc-SiO2 and Pc@Ag-SiO2 NFs were also quantified and found to be 0.08 and 0.12, respectively, in water. All the modified SiO2 NFs were found to possess photoactivity against S. aureus with the most effective being the Pc@Ag-SiO2 NFs due to the synergy between the Pc and Ag nanoparticles. The bare SiO2 NFs do not exhibit any antibacterial activity while the Ag-SiO2 and Pc@Ag-SiO2 NFs were found to also exhibit dark toxicity. The generated photocatalysts are attractive because they are active against bacteria and they are easily retrievable post-application. The nanocatalysts reported herein are therefore feasible candidates for real-life antibacterial applications.

- Description: The metal-free (H2TPrOPhOPc), cobalt (CoTPrOPhOPc) and manganese (Mn(OAc)TPrOPhOPc) tetra propargyloxyphenoxy phthalocyanines were evaluated for their potential as optical limiting materials. The effect of the substituents and the central metal ions on the nonlinear optical properties was evaluated. The metal-free phthalocyanine exhibited better nonlinear optical properties when compared to the cobalt and manganese complexes owing to the metal ions quenching the excited state due to their half-filled d-orbitals. The nonlinear absorption coefficient (βeff, ×10−5 m MW−1) followed the trend of H2TPrOPhOPc > CoTPrOPhOPc > Mn(OAc)TPrOPhOPc. The values βeff (×10−5 m MW−1) using 532 nm Nd:YAG (560 nm monochromatic Ekspla) laser sources were 23.5 > 14.3 > 9.20 (14.4). The second-order nonlinear coefficient obtained using density functional theory calculations, the theoretical hyper-Rayleigh scattering (βHRS, ×10−28 esu), showed the decreasing trend for H2TPrOPhOPc (2.28) > CoTPrOPhOPc (2.10) > Mn(OAc)TPrOPhOPc (1.86). The 4-(propargyloxy)phenoxy substituents enhanced the optical limiting properties of the synthesized phthalocyanines.

- Description: Indium(III) chloride 1,8(11),15(18),22(25)-tetra-(3-carboxyphenoxy) phthalocyanine (1) and indium(III) chloride 2,9(10),16(17),23(24)-tetra–(3-carboxyphenoxy) phthalocyanine (2) were covalently linked to glutathione capped silver nanoparticles (AgNPs–GSH) and silver selenide/zinc sulfide (Ag2Se/ZnS–GSH) quantum dots via amide bond formation. The photophysical and nonlinear optical behaviour of the metallophthalocyanines and their conjugates with nanoparticles were investigated using the open aperture Z–scan technique. Complex 2 showed enhanced photophysical properties compared to 1. The conjugates revealed improved triplet state quantum yields (except for 1-AgNPs-GSH which afforded lower triplet state quantum yields in comparison to 1) and nonlinear optical activities in comparison to the Pc complexes. The synthesized complexes, nanoparticles and their conjugates could be potential nonlinear optical materials due to their good nonlinear optical activities.

- Description: The efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) is often limited by the poor bio-distributive properties of conventional photosensitizers and the local hypoxic microenvironment that characterises most solid tumours. Herein, a novel in situ oxygenic lipid formulation for photodynamic therapy (PDT) is reported. Such a hybrid was synthesized by adsorbing bimetallic nanozyme, MnO2@PtNPs (NPs = nanoparticles) onto graphene quantum dots (GQDs) – zinc (II) phthalocyanine conjugates, followed by liposomal encapsulation, affording it enhanced water solubility. The MnO2@PtNPs, which are is shown to possess excellent catalase-like properties surpassing that of MnO2 or PtNPs alone, serves to catalyze H2O2 to O2, while the zinc (II) phthalocyanine (1) serves to transform the formed oxygen to generate cytotoxic singlet oxygen immediately. We show that by combining each function of the respective building blocks, the as-synthesized 1-GQDs-MnO2@PtNPs-liposomes not only maintains the properties of oxygen supplementation through H2O2 catalysis but also displays cooperative properties for enhanced singlet oxygen production. Consequently, a remarkably improved PDT efficacy was observed for 1-GQDs-MnO2@PtNPs-liposomes in both normoxia and hypoxia. These results demonstrate the potential applicability of such nanozyme constituted 1-GQDs-MnO2@PtNPs-liposomes for achieving tumour treatment in hypoxic conditions by PDT.

- Description: This paper investigates the third-order nonlinear optical properties of 4α-(4-tert-butylphenoxy) phthalocyaninato dichlorotin(IV) (α-SnOtBpPc) and 4β-(4-tert-butylphenoxy) phthalocyaninato dichlorotin(IV) (β-SnOtBpPc) in different organic solvents. The third-order susceptibilities of α-SnOtBpPc and βSnOtBpPc are reported in different solvents, using Z-scan techniques with 10 ns laser pulses at 532 nm. Their nonlinear absorption coefficient and absorption cross sections were also determined. The molecular imaginary components of the secondorder hyperpolarizability Im[γ] of α-SnOtBpPc and β-SnOtBpPc were found to be 2.60 × 10−31 and 2.94 × 10−31 esu (tetrahydrofuran), 2.12 × 10−31 and 2.54 × 10−31 esu (chloroform), 3.06 × 10−31 and 2.54 × 10−31 esu (dichloromethane), and 1.27 × 10−31 and 1.50 × 10−31 esu (toluene), respectively. This study found that substitution at the α position has an effect of lowering the two-photon (2PA) cross section value for α-SnOtBpPc compared to that for β-SnOtBpPc, with values of 64.30 and 456.65 GM, respectively. The large 2PA cross section observed in β-SnOtBpPc is attributed to the decreased energy difference between the virtual state and the LUMO.

- Description: Non-linear optical (NLO) parameters were determined for phthalocyanine complexes containing In, Ga and Zn as central metals when embedded in poly (methyl methacrylate) polymer in the absence and presence of quantum dots (QDs) in an effort to create the most optimal optical limiting material. The QDs employed were CdTe–TGA (TGA = thioglylcolic acid). Triplet lifetimes generally increased as the value of the ratio of absorption cross sections of the excited state to that of the ground state (k) decreased on addition of CdTe–TGA to the phthalocyanines. The saturation energy density (Fsat) values were generally smaller in the films when compared to the solutions. Fsat, Ilim, Im[χ(3)]/α and γ all gave values which were of optimal range (i.e. the Im[χ(3)]/α and γ values were high enough to ensure adequate optical limiting but not too high to make the compounds behave like optical filters. Also, the Fsat and Ilim values were small enough to mean that the optical limiting process started at an intensity which was not too high) for complex 10 containing Zn central metal and tetrasubstituted with amino groups.

- Description: This work reports on synthesis and characterizations of Ga(III) and In(III) complexes, formed by 2,3-bis[2′′-(2′′′′-hydroxyethoxy)ethoxy]-9,10,16,17,23,24-hexa-nn-butoxy phthalocyanine (1H2) coordinating acetatoindium(III) (1InOAc) and hydroxogallium(III) (1GaOH) Photophysical properties of hydroxogallium(III) phthalocyaninate 1GaOH and acetatoindium(III) phthalocyaninate 1InOAc were studied by UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy and time-resolved methods. The nonlinear absorption of the complexes was studied using the Z-scan technique at 532 nm and 10 ns pulse in DMSO and in thin films formed by composite with poly(bisphenol A carbonate) — PBC. The magnitude of absorption coefficients and other nonlinear optical parameters estimated in this work showed that complex 1InOAc exhibited the strongest nonlinear optical behavior in comparison with 1GaOH in solution and a reverse tendency when embedded in PBC thin films. DFT calculations were used to rationalize these results.

- Description: CdTe QDs capped with mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) and thioglycolic acid (TGA) were covalently linked to zinc and indium tetraaminophthalocyanines (TAPcs) using N-ethyl-N(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) and N-hydroxy succinimide (NHS) as the coupling agents. The results presented give evidence in favour of formation of an amide bond between the MTAPc and CdTe QDs. Both the linked ZnTAPc–QD complexes and the mixture of QDs and ZnTAPc (without chemical linking) showed Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), though the linked showed less FRET, whereas the QD interactions with InTAPc yielded no evidence of FRET. Both MTAPcs quenched the QDs emission, with quenching constants of the order of 103–104M−1, binding constants of the order of 108-1010M-1 and the number of binding sites for the MTAPc upon the QD being 2. High energy transfer efficiencies were obtained (in some cases as high as 93%), due to the low donor to acceptor distances. Lastly, both MTAPc were shown to be poor optical limiters because their imaginary third-order susceptibility (Im[χ(3)]) was of the order of 10-17-10-16 (optimal range is 10-9-10-11), the hyperpolarizability (γ) of the order of 10-37-10-36 (optimal range is 10-29-10-34) and the k values were above one but below ten.

The fluorescence and singlet oxygen generating behaviour of the porphyrins were investigated following incorporation. The fluorescence lifetimes were short-lived upon incorporation into the polymer, compared to the porphyrin alone; suggesting the quenching of the lifetimes of the porphyrin by the polymers. Singlet oxygen quantum yields were determined to be 0.55 and 0.59 for ClGaTSPP and ClGaTSPP-F127, respectively. Thus there is an increase in singlet oxygen quantum yields in the presence of Pluronic F127 compared to the porphyrin alone. ClGaTSPP-F127 (or H2TSPP-F127) showed higher values of the binding constant (Kb) as well as high values of the Stern-Volmer constant (Ksv) compared to ClGaTNPP-F127 (or H2TNPP-F127).

- Description: GaCl 5,10,15,20-Tetra(1-pyrenyl)porphyrin (GaClTPyP) was successfully synthesised and encapsulated into Pluronic F127. The unmetallated 5,10,15,20-tetra(1-pyrenyl)porphyrin (H2TPyP) precursor was also encapsulated into Pluronic F127. The fluorescence quantum yield for GaClTPyP at 0.045 was lower than that of H2TPyP at 0.13 due to the heavy atom effect of Ga in the former which encourages intersystem crossing to the triplet state, lowering the fluorescence. Fluorescence quantum yield values increased when GaClTPyP or H2TPyP were encapsulated in Pluronic F127. GaClTPyP/Pluronic F127 showed higher values of the binding constant (Kb) as well as Stern-Volmer constant (Ksv) when compared to H2ClTPyP/Pluronic F127. It was determined from fluorescence quenching studies for GaClTPyP was located more in the inner core (hydrophobic) of Pluronic F127 and H2TPyP more on the outer region. Single oxygen quantum yields (Ф△) were determined to be 0.32 and 0.53 for GaClTPyP and GaClTPyP/Pluronic F127 respectively, an increase for the latter compared to the former.

- Description: In this study, the photophysical, nonlinear absorption and nonlinear optical limiting properties of zinc and gallium phthalocyanine complexes: tetrakis[(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl phenoxy)phthalocyaninato]zinc(II) (3), tetrakis[(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl phenoxy)phthalocyaninato] gallium(III) chloride (4), tetrakis[(benzo[d]thiazol-2-ylthio)phthalocyaninato] zinc(II) (5), tetrakis[(benzo[d]thiazol-2-ylthio)phthalocyaninato] gallium(III) chloride (6), were investigated both in solution and when embedded in polystyrene thin films using 532 nm laser excitation at 10 ns pulses. It was also observed that complexes that have higher triplet state absorption also possessed enhanced nonlinear and optical limiting behavior. Superior optical performance was observed when the complexes were embedded in thin films compared to when they are in solution. Complex 6 in thin films gave the highest imaginary third-order susceptibility (Imm[X(3)(3)]) and hyperpolarizability (γ)γ) at 4.61 × 10-7-7 esu and 3.44 × 10-26-26 esu, respectively, with a low Ilimlim value of 0.06 J.cm-2.
