- Description: The reaction of Zn(OAc)2 and C6H5COOH or 3,5-NO2-C6H3COOH with 3-ferrocenylpyrazolyl-methylenepyridine (L1), 3-ferrocenyl-5-methylpyrazolyl-methylenepyridine (L2), 3-ferrocenylpyrazolyl-ethylamine (L3) and 3-ferrocenyl-5-pyrazolyl-ethylamine (L4) afford the corresponding complexes [Zn(C6H5COO)2(L1)] (1), [Zn(C6H5COO)2(L2)] (2), [Zn(3,5-NO2-C6H3COO)2(L1)] (3), [Zn(3,5-NO2-C6H3 COO)2(L2)] (4), [Zn(C6H5COO)2(L3)] (5), [Zn(C6H5COO)2(L4)] (6), [Zn(3,5-NO2-C6H3COO)2(L3)] (7) and [Zn(3,5-NO2-C6H3COO)2(L4)] (8). These complexes behave as catalysts for the ring opening polymerization of e-caprolactone to produce polymers with molecular weight that range from 1480 to 7080 g mol1 and exhibited moderate to broad PDIs. Evidence of these complexes acting as catalysts was obtained from both the polymerization data and kinetic studies. The polymerization data show that variation of the [CL]/[C] from 100 to 800 produced PCL with relatively the same molecular weight indicative of a catalyst behavior. The appearance of induction period in kinetic plots strengthens the fact that these complexes are catalysts rather than initiators. MALDI-TOF MS and 1 H NMR data show di-hydroxy end groups, which support the coordination mechanism rather than insertion mechanism. To understand the broad PDIs obtained for some of the polymer, the electronic properties of the zinc complexes were investigated using cyclic voltammetry. The results show that the zinc complexes containing amine based ligands are highly electrophilic therefore making them unstable, hence the broad PDIs observed for zinc complexes containing amine based ligands. Among the eight complexes investigated, complex 7 is the most active catalyst with kp value of 1.18 107 h1 mol1 at 110 C.

Styrylation with boronic acid groups at the 3,5-positions of the BODIPY core results in an extension of the π-conjugation system of the dye and in a red-shift of the main absorption band from 500 to 637 nm. Modified and bare electrodes were characterized using cyclic voltammetry and scanning electrochemical microscopy, while glucose detection was carried out by using differential pulse voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The detection limit was determined to be 1.42 μM. The dye was found to be selective and sensitive towards glucose, since likely interferences have only minor effects on the glucose detection.

Singlet oxygen luminescence studies revealed that 1-Sn and 2-Sn have comparable ΦΔΦΔ values in DMF of 0.59 and 0.60, respectively, while the IC5050 values after irradiation of MCF-7 cells for 30 min with a Thorlabs 625 nm LED (432 J · cm−2)−2) were determined to be 12.4 and 8.9 μμM. The results demonstrate that the cellular uptake of 2-Sn and its molar absorptivity at the irradiation wavelength play a crucial role during in vitro cytotoxicity studies.

- Description: Tin(IV) complexes of a 4-methylthiophenyl functionalized porphyrin (1-Sn) and its corrole analogue (2-Sn) were synthesized so that their photophysicochemical properties and photodynamic activities against MCF-7 breast cancer cells could be compared. Singlet oxygen luminescence studies revealed that 1-Sn and 2-Sn have comparable ΦΔΦΔ values in DMF of 0.59 and 0.60, respectively, while the IC5050 values after irradiation of MCF-7 cells for 30 min with a Thorlabs 625 nm LED (432 J · cm−2)−2) were determined to be 12.4 and 8.9 μμM. The results demonstrate that the cellular uptake of 2-Sn and its molar absorptivity at the irradiation wavelength play a crucial role during in vitro cytotoxicity studies.

They both accounted for a cell viability of ≥90% at a concentration of ≤59.2 μg mL−1. 3-AuCT showed better PDT activity (compared to 3 alone) with less than 50% viable cells at a concentration of ≥29.6 μg mL−1 making it potentially applicable for PDT. On the other hand, AuCT displayed some activity against cancer cells, probably due to photothermal activity since gold is a light absorber, however it had more than 50% viable cells at a concentration of ≤59.2 μg mL−1.

The probe achieved a detection limit (3δ/S) of 0.07 ng mL−1 and a precision, calculated as a relative standard deviation (RSD) of more than 4% (n = 8). The concentration of Ni2+ in a certified reference material (SEP-3) was found to be 0.8986 μg mL−1, which is significantly comparable with the certified value of 0.8980 μg mL−1. The accuracy of the determinations, expressed as a relative error between the certified and the observed values of certified reference groundwater was ≤0.1%. The versatility of the nanofiber probe was demonstrated by affording simple, rapid and selective detection of Ni2+ in the presence of other competing metal ions by direct analysis, without employing any further sample handling steps.

- Description: Two readily synthesized Sn(IV) porphyrins (SnP, SnPH) have been prepared with and without the cationic triphenylphosphonium moiety (TPP+), which have high singlet oxygen quantum yields (ca. 0.72) and long triplet state lifetimes. The Sn(IV) porphyrin with a TPP+ moiety (SnPH) exhibits favorable photodynamic activity against MCF-7 cells with IC50 values of 2.9 μM. SnPH exhibits higher cellular uptake than SnP in MCF-7 cells. A Rhodamine 123 (Rh123) assay showed that SnPH targets mitochondria and induces apoptosis by generating reactive oxygen species. The results demonstrate that this structural modification strategy merits further in-depth study.

- Description: This work reports conjugation of two mono carboxy substituted zinc phthalocyanines with glutathione capped silver nanoparticles (GSH-AgNPs). The photophysicochemical behaviour of the novel phthalocyanines–silver nanoparticle conjugates was investigated together with simple mixtures of the silver nanoparticles with low symmetry phthalocyanines (i.e. with no direct chemical bond formation). It was observed that upon conjugation of the phthalocyanines to the silver nanoparticles, a blue shifting of the Q band was induced. The triplet lifetimes and quantum yields improved upon conjugation as compared to the phthalocyanines alone. Fluorescence lifetimes and quantum yields decreased for conjugates compared to the phthalocyanines alone due to quenching caused by the silver nanoparticles. The low symmetry phthalocyanines and their conjugates showed antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli in the presence and absence of light.
