- Description: Purpose. One of the unresolved issues in the FDA Guidance document for topical corticosteroid bioequivalence testing is the method of manipulation suggested for the chromameter data. The purpose of this study was to manipulate the instrumental data from a typical blanching study in a number of ways to investigate the appropriateness of these procedures for comparison with the subjective visually-assessed results. Methods. The human skin blanching assay methodology routinely practiced in our laboratories was utilised and the vasoconstriction produced by two corticosteroid formulations of different potency was assessed visually and instrumentally by use of a Minolta chromameter. The instrumental data were corrected for zero-time and unmedicated site readings. In addition, Euclidean distances were calculated using all data generated by the instrument. Results. Individually the a-, b- and L-scale chromameter values are imprecise and there is negligible vasoconstriction response recorded for the moderately potent formulation. Arithmetical manipulation of the data as suggested by the FDA does not appear to improve the quality of the data in any way. Euclidean distance analysis more closely resembles the visual data and appears to have better precision. Conclusions. It is clear that mathematical correction of chromameter data is unnecessary, especially since the instrumental data are extremely imprecise. Furthermore, the assessment of each individual chromameter index does not adequately characterise the blanching response profile. It is therefore suggested that Euclidean distance may be a better measure on which to base an analysis of bioequivalence than the truncated data set methodology currently suggested by the FDA.

- Description: The following macrolide antibiotics have been covered in this review: erythromycin and its related substances, azithromycin, clarithromycin, dirithromycin, roxithromycin, flurithromycin, josamycin, rokitamycin, kitasamycin, mycinamycin, mirosamycin, oleandomycin, rosaramicin, spiramycin and tylosin. The application of various thin-layer chromatography, paper chromatography, gas chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography and capillary zone electrophoresis procedures for their analysis are described. These techniques have been applied to the separation and quantitative analysis of the macrolides in fermentation media, purity assessment of raw materials, assay of pharmaceutical dosage forms and the measurement of clinically useful macrolide antibiotics in biological samples such as blood, plasma, serum, urine and tissues. Data relating to the chromatographic behaviour of some macrolide antibiotics as well as the various detection methods used, such as bioautography, UV spectrophotometry, fluorometry, electrochemical detection, chemiluminescence and mass spectrometry techniques are also included.

- Description: Not unlike Spain after Franco in the 1970s, post-Apartheid South Africa in the 1990s, is a state whose democracy is built on a broad based effort to manage a transformation towards constitutionalism and the open rule of law. In what is still an ongoing process towards the transformation of public life, a democratising South Africa remains a prime example of one of the most hopeful democratic orders in the Southern hemisphere. How this state, engaged in transformation at home, projects itself in its relations with other, largely less democratic states abroad, represents a test for the evolution of a foreign policy which pays heed to both economic need as well as its newly won democratic credentials. In the country's relations with Asia, the attempt to strike a balance between the two concerns, is something which points, more than anything else, to the ongoing, evolving nature of South African foreign policy.

- Description: This workshop is designed to give you a reliable introduction the Employment Equity Act. It is based on hard information and on ACTIVITIES or discussion exercises that will help you to understand how the Act works, who it covers, and what the implications are for trade unionists. Each of the Activities is complemented with information that will help you to understand the Act in more detail. Sections have been added to help you find further information, and to understand the terms that are used in the Act itself. In a two day programme, you are not going to be an 'expert' on the Employment Equity Act, but we hope that you will feel more confident about using the Act, especially in ensuring that it is used to address a wide range of discriminatory practices at the workplace. As with most legislation, the more that you begin to use it, the more its strengths and weaknesses will emerge. It is very important that any weaknesses in the practical application of the Act are reported through your Union to the Federation. This will help the Federation to campaign for improvements in the legislation, and to close any loopholes that allow employers to avoid their responsibilities.

- Description: A prominent vertical dolerite dyke, up to 30 m wide and which can be traced for over 100 km, is compositionally homogeneous along much of its length and shows no evidence of flow differentiation. Associated parallel dykes are compositionally distinct and are unrelated by closed-system processes. The main dyke has geochemical characteristics of the Maloti or Senqu Units in the upper part of the main Lesotho basalt sequence, whereas the parallel dykes are geochemically similar to the lower Mafika Lisiu Unit. On the basis of size and composition the main dyke may well represent a fissure which once fed effusions of Karoo basalt.

- Description: The in vitro release characteristics of amoxycillin from different lipophilic suppository bases were investigated using the USP rotating basket method. Suppositories containing 250 mg amoxycillin were prepared in theobroma oil and in the semisynthetic bases Witepsol W35, Suppocire A32, Novata BD, and Novata 299. Both freshly prepared and 1-month-old suppositories were tested. Analysis of amoxycillin was performed using a validated high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) technique. Release profiles differed significantly between bases, with the greatest amount of amoxycillin being released from both newly made and 1-month-old Novata BD bases (87.57 ± 8.18 and 99.66 ± 6.63%, respectively), and the lowest amount released from the newly manufactured theobroma suppositories (8.82 ± 0.75%) and the 1-month-old Suppocire A32 suppositories (7.78 ± 0.27%).

- Description: The coordination of nitric oxide (NO) to cobalt(II) phthalocyanine (CoPc) in dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) has been studied. CoPc coordinates with NO in a 1:1 ratio, forming a CoPc(NO) species. The IR band observed at 1680 cm−1 is assigned to the coordinated NO. In the presence of excess NO, pseudo first order kinetics were followed. The observed rate constant, kf, was determined to be 15.0±0.3 dm−3 mol−1 s−1 and the equilibrium constant was K=5.4±0.4×104dm3 mol−1. Solution or adsorbed CoPc catalyses the reduction of NO. The products of reduction include NH3 and NH2OH.

- Description: This research report was commissioned by NALEDI as part of its long term research project on Co-determination and Tripartism in South Africa. The transition to democracy in South Africa has been accompanied by a range of institutions and processes through which ordinary workers and their organisations may gain varying degrees of control over economic decisions that directly affect their lives. Scholars and practitioners have focussed attention on parts of these changes - such as NEDLAC or the workplace forum provisions of the Labour Relations Act - while missing its more systematic features: its wide scope from the factory floor to the societal level, and the extent to which labour has obtained strong decisionmaking and consultation rights founded in both statute and agreement. Taken together these features have the potential to deepen dramatically the political democracy won in 1994. Yet these developments are generally untheorised and remain seriously underresearched. In mid-1996 NALEDI embarked on this long term research project to investigate the dramatic changes that are occurring regarding worker representation at the workplace, industry, and societal levels. The full list of reports produced by this project is set out below. While the contributions are academically informed, they are aimed at examining key issues in a critical fashion to inform trade unionists and contribute to labour movement policy debates.

- Description: THE South African Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) launched a medical aid fund yesterday which the union said would be used as a springboard for the establishment of its own medical aid scheme. Saccawu assistant general secretary Herbet Mkhize said the fund would operate under Medscheme’s Meddent Medical Scheme for about nine months while the union conducted further research into establishing its own medical aid scheme. Mkhize said trade unions were no longer only competing with one another but also with legal firms that were now offering their services to workers. “Now a trade union has to convince potential members that it offers the best services, “Mkhize said.

- Description: Since the publication of the previous edition of this book there have been considerable developments and controversy in the field of topical corticosteroid bioequivalence assessment. There has been considerable discussion in the literature concerning the use of the Minolta chromameter for the measurement of corticosteroid-induced skin blanching, as it is believed this instrument would produce more objective results than the visual grading procedure. These efforts culminated in the release of a guidance document from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) detailing the procedures to be followed for the determination of topical corticosteroid bioequivalence using the chromameter. Since the promulgation of this document there have been challenges on the validity and scientific merit of the documented procedures, and recently the FDA itself conceded that it may be necessary to redefine some of the protocol evaluations. This chapter attempts to redefine the current standing of the two methods of response assessment.

- Description: This Induction Course is the most important education programme in the National Union of Mineworkers. It is the beginning of a development programme for shaft/shop stewards as cadres of the labour movement and cadres of the working class movement. The Induction Course is part of a programme to organise, deepen organisational understanding, raise class-consciousness and develop working class leadership. Once a shaft/shop steward has completed the course, he/she must demand progression through the intermediate course to the leadership school. Development and desire for selfgrowth should be in the hands of stewards themselves. We train shaft/shop stewards because we are committed to ensuring that Mine and Energy workers themselves determine their destiny. They must lead and control their own union. This can only become reality if it translates into these workers taking over all strategic positions in the union. The Induction Course must instill ambition and make our members develop dreams about the union.

- Description: Diphthalocyanine complexes of Nd III, EuIII, TmIII and LuIII ( [Pc (−2) Nd IIIPc (−2) ] −, [Pc (−2) EuIIIPc (−2) ] −, [Pc (−2) TmIIIPc (−2) ] − and [Pc (−2) LuIIIPc (−2) ] −, respectively) , undergo one or two-electron oxidation in the presence of thionyl chloride. The oxidation products depend on the concentration of the thionyl chloride. At low concentrations of SOCl2 (larger than 10−4 mol dm−3) one-electron oxidation occurs only upon photolysis, giving the neutral lanthanide diphthalocyanine, Pc (−2) LnPc (−1) , complexes. The Pc (−2) LnPc (−1) species undergo one-electron photooxidation to the [Pc (−1) LnPc (−1) ] + in dichloromethane and in the presence of SOCl2. At large concentrations of SOCl2 (>10−2 mol dm−3) , two electron oxidation of the [Pc (−2) LnPc (−2) ] − species directly to [Pc (−1) LnPc (−1) ] + occurs.

- Description: This review examines the use of pictograms in health care. Well designed pictograms are simple, clear, graphic symbols able to convey their intended meaning to all patients, including those who are illiterate, elderly or visually impaired. Although some research on the effectiveness of pictograms has not supported the hypothesis that pictograms are beneficial for the acquisition and comprehension of information, most studies investigating health‐related applications of pictograms have shown them to be of benefit in the comprehension and recall of instructions on prescription and over‐the‐counter medicines. However, the success of pictograms as a communication aid in pharmacy depends first on a rigorous design process, followed by well‐designed, randomised, controlled trials using an appropriate method of evaluation. The final stage is to investigate the optimal way of using pictograms in practice and to assess their effect on behavioural outcomes, such as compliance.

- Description: When I commenced my work on aspects of Port Elizabeth’s history in the late 1980s, there was no body of scholarly literature on which to draw. Since thena number of significant publications, both periodical articles and books, as well as theses have appeared, and something of a corpus of works on the city now exists. It seems appropriate to take stock of the current state of Port Elizabeth’s historiography by compiling a bibliography.
