- Description: In this article, we report on the linking of cobalt tetrakis (4-pentyn-oxy) phthalocyanine (CoTPPc) to ZnO nanoparticles via click chemistry. Subsequently, electrocatalytic activity and nonlinear optical properties were investigated (the latter using an open Z-scan technique at 532 nm). The linking of CoTPPc with ZnO resulted in the lowest limiting intensity value of 0.27 J.Cm−2, the βeff (cmW−1) values were found to be 1.51 × 10-8 and 7.10 × 104 for ZnO and CoTPPc-ZnO respectively. The catalytic rate constants (M−1s−1) (and limits of detection) were 4.1 × 104 (12.87 µM), 5.7 × 104 (8.62 µM) and 7.36 × 104 (4.35 µM) for ZnO, CoTPPc and CoTPPc-ZnO. Hence linking ZnO nanoparticles to CoTPPc result in the enhancement of both nonlinear optical behaviour and catalytic activity.

- Description: Amphiphilic poly(oxanorbornene)s are promising synthetic polymers that mimic the structural properties and antimicrobial functions of naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides. Here, poly(oxanorbornene)s bearing pendant zinc(II) phthalocyanine and triphenyl(ethyl) phosphonium functionalities are synthesized by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Fluorescence, singlet oxygen and triplet quantum yields of polymers are measured in dimethyl sulfoxide and aqueous medium. The singlet oxygen quantum yields of copolymers with the highest triphenyl and triethyl phosphonium content are found to be 0.29 and 0.41, respectively. Then, antimicrobial activities of polymers against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) are investigated under both dark and light conditions. Synergistic effect of zinc(II) phthalocyanine and phosphonium-containing poly(oxanorbornene) is observed that the conjugate possessing the most triphenyl phosphonium side chains has the highest activity under light against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial strains after 80 min irradiation, reducing the survival of E. coli or S. aureus by 99.9999%. Hemolytic concentrations of the copolymers are found between 8 and 512 µg mL−1. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) proves that the bacteria membrane deforms after contacting with the biocidal polymer.

- Description: New symmetric {tetrakis [4-(4-(5-chloro-1Hbenzo[d]imidazol-2-yl) phenoxy phthalocyaninato] Co (II) (CoTPc)} and low symmetry {tris tert butyl phenoxy mono [4-(4-(5-chloro-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl) phenoxy phthalocyaninato]} Co (II) (CoMPc) were successfully synthesised and combined with reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (rGONS) for electrocatalytic detection of hydrazine. Prior to electrocatalysis, the probes were characterised using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Chronoamperometry was used to determine catalytic rate constant and the limit of detection (LOD). CoMPc-rGONS gave catalytic rate constant and LOD of 1.37×106 M 1 s 1 and 0.82 μM respectively, rendering it a more suitable probe for hydrazine, due to low symmetry.

- Description: On the one hand, according to Richard Rorty, Paulo Freire and others, education is the practice of freedom. On the other hand, according to Michael Foucault, Mary Midgley and others, ethics is the practice of freedom. How, then, are education and ethics related to one another and what do these authors mean by ‘the practice of freedom’? In this piece, I argue that education and ethics are two mutually constitutive aspects of the practice of freedom. Individuals who are able to engage in this practice can most properly be said to be the authors of their lives, that is, individuals who, to borrow from Neil MacGregor, are able to find their ‘place in things’. To find our ‘place in things’ is to do the necessary educative work required for becoming the authors of our lives, that is, for self-actualization (as Rorty and John Dewey have argued). To take on the authorial role is, moreover, to be able effectively to take control of our lives, to organize them into unities for which we are individually responsible. This, according to Midgley, is precisely what it is to be ethical. This work, moreover, requires ongoing development, that is, education, in Dewey’s sense. I further argue that professional education and skills training cannot be understood properly in isolation from these broader educational aims and I criticize mainstream educational practices for not paying sufficient attention to the intimate relationship between the vocational and non-vocational aspects of education.

- Description: The rare-earth quintuple-decker phthalocyaninato chelates (3a and 3b) were synthesized from their parent rare-earth double-decker phthalocyaninato precursors (2b and 2a). After extensive structural elucidation, these complexes were subjected to various spectroscopic techniques to investigate their electronic behavior. It was found that complexes 3a and 3b existed as the oxidized forms. When investigating the optical limiting properties, all these complexes were found to exhibit reverse saturable absorption, with complex 2a showing a more enhanced open-aperture Z-Scan signature than complex 2b. Interestingly, complexes 3a and 3b (in solution) exhibited better open-aperture Z-Scan signatures than their parent rare-earth double-decker phthalocyaninato precursors (2b and 2a). However, thin films fabricated from these complexes did not show an improvement in the optical limiting properties when compared to 2a, 3a, 3b except for that which was prepared from 2b. This study shows the importance of extensive π-electron system in phthalocyaninato complexes for optical limiting applications.

- Description: The synthesis and characterisation of asymmetrical zinc(II) 2(3)-mono-isophthalic acid-9(10),16(17),23 (24)-tri (tert-butylphenoxy) phthalocyanine (complex 4) are reported. The phthalocyanine is conjugated to cysteamine capped silver nanoparticles (Cys-Ag NPs), amine functionalised iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (NH2-Fe3O4 NPs) and a core-shell composite of the two (Cys-Fe3O4@Ag) via amide bonds. The photo-physico-chemical properties of complex 4 and its respective nanoconjugates (4-Ag, 4-Fe3O4 NPs and 4-Fe3O4@Ag NPs) are also reported. The nanoconjugates showed improved triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields compared to complex 4. The antibacterial activity of complex 4 and its nanoconjugates were also evaluated on S. aureus wherein their activity was found to be mainly visible light driven with the best catalyst being 4-Fe3O4@Ag. The work therefore demonstrates the feasibility of phthalocyanine-nanoparticle based compounds as potential agents in real life antibacterial treatment

- Description: Tetrakis[(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl-thio) phthalocyaninato] gallium(III)chloride (1) and tetrakis[(benzo[d]thiazol-2ylphenoxy) phthalocyaninato] gallium(III)chloride (2) were successfully electrodeposited onto aluminium for corrosion retardation in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid solution. The aim of this study was to compare the corrosion resistance of electrodeposited metallated phthalocyanines. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and polarization confirmed the aluminium corrosion inhibition potentials of complexes 1 and 2. EIS and polarization techniques showed that complex 2 performed better than complex 1, with values from EIS measurements of 82% for 1 and 86% for 2 in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid solution. The importance of electrodeposition in industries and a dearth of research on the use of electrodeposited metallated phthalocyanines necessitated this study, and results show that coatings formed by electrodeposition of 1 and 2 onto aluminium reduced its susceptibility to corrosion attack.

- Description: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been developed as a promising therapeutic method in cancer treatment. The discovery of effective photosensitizer, which is the key factor of PDT, is highly desired. This paper reports the synthesis of novel chlorin derivatives, 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-[2:3]-[(methoxycarbonyl, carboxy)methano] chlorin I and 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-[2:3]- {[methoxycarbonyl, (2-hydroxyethyl)amide]methano}chlorin II. Their structures were characterized with UV–vis, 1HNMR, 13CNMR and HRMS spectroscopies. Photophysical and photochemical experiments results showed that compound I and II had an absorption maximum around 650 nm, with molar extinction coefficients of 1 × 104 M−1 cm−1. They had strong fluorescence emission in 650–660 nm upon excitation with 419–422 nm light. ESR showed that singlet oxygen was produced upon irradiation of compounds with 650 nm light in the presence of molecular oxygen. The photo-bleaching test indicated that the structure of compounds was stable. These new compounds exhibit excellent anti-tumor effects and lower toxicity compared to m-THPC in vitro and in vivo. Compound I and II had high tumor selectivity, which could induced tumor cells shrinkage and necrosis under 650 nm laser irradiation. Flow cytometry revealed that the compounds might mediate PDT effect at late apoptotic phase. These results make these compound I and II promising candidates for future study in photo-diagnosis and photodynamic therapy of cholangiocarcinoma.

- Description: In this study, the synthesis and characterization of a new Schiff base and its cobalt(II) and iron(III) complexes were performed fully characterized by common spectroscopic techniques such as 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FT-IR, UV–Vis and MS and elemental analysis. The cathodes prepared with only activated carbon, Co-Schiff base complex, and Fe-Schiff base complex mixed with activated carbon as the carrier were examined in single chamber air cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The spectroscopic results confirm the structure of novel Schiff base and its complexes with cobalt (II) and Fe(III). MFC results showed that Fe-Schiff base complex generated higher voltage generation using glucose as the carbon source. Cyclic voltammetry results showed the conductivity and catalytic features of the cathodes developed in this study. Scanning electron microscopic results showed the distribution the complexes on the cathode surface. In conclusion, a novel Schiff base and its complexes with cobalt (II) and iron (III) can be employed into MFC technology to be used in green electricity production, and might help decreasing the operating costs of wastewater treatment plants.

- Description: Trying to keep up with what is going on in South African theatre today is an endlessly renewing process. The word ‘foray’ has associations of brief incursions into foreign territory. It’s an almost hesitant word, a venture into unexplored terrain. This hesitation feels apt in the sense that (at the time of writing), any description of a pre-Covid theatre is bound to feel strange. The landscape has shifted, and nobody is quite sure how things will look in a year from now. Nevertheless, this is a rich compendium of relatively recent theatre, as seen from within the country and also from the vantage of a global perspective. Almost all of the essays are drawn from a 2017 conference held in Brussels at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, called: ‘New Stage Idioms: South African Drama, Theatre and Performance in the Twenty-first Century.’Although the tone remains scholarly, the inclusion of different kinds of writers – not only academics but activists, playwrights and journalists – prevents the work from becoming overly dry.

- Description: Membrane applications are hindered by fouling. Photoactive membranes (containing photosensitizers) show photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) activity which reduces biological fouling. In this work we use phthalocyanines (Pcs) as photosensitizers. The Pcs used are: 2-(4-carboxyphenoxy)-9(10), 16(17), 23(24)-tris(dimethylamino) phthalocyaninato zinc(II) (1) and the quaternized 2-(4-carboxyphenoxy)-9(10), 16(17), 23(24)-tris(trimethylamino) phthalocyanine zinc(II) methyl sulfate (2). Complex 2 showed an enhanced singlet oxygen quantum yield (ΦΔ) of 0.76 compared to 0.53 for 1. Complex 2 showed enhanced PACT activity against Staphylococcus aureus giving a log reduction value of 9.4, while its precursor (complex 1) gave 0.08. The complexes were then conjugated to amine-functionalized polystyrene and embedded into polystyrene to form membranes resulting in ΦΔ values of 0.24 and 0.27 for complexes 1 and 2 respectively in water. The latter membrane showed better PACT activity.

- Description: This work describes the electrochemical properties of low symmetry cobalt phthalocyanines namely, tris-[(4-tert-butylphenoxy)-4-(pent-4-yn-1-yloxy) phthalocyaniato] cobalt (II) (3) and tris-[(4-tert-butylphenoxy)-4-(4-ethybylbenzyl-oxy) phthalocyaniato] cobalt (II) (5). The complexes were characterized by a number of techniques including UV–Vis, mass, and infrared spectra, as well as elemental analysis. The glassy carbon electrodes were first azide functionalized then clicked to low symmetry phthalocyanines. The click reaction was confirmed using X-ray photoelectron spectra. The constructed electrodes showed excellent electrocatalytic activity towards hydrazine oxidation. Oxidation peaks with low potentials of 0.21 V and 0.26 V, for complexes 3 and 5, respectively were obtained. Complex-5 gave a better detection limit of 0.94 μM and electrocatalytic rate constant of 5.6 × 106 M−1 s−1.

- Description: Sustainability transitions are dependent on the development and diffusion of transformative skills and competencies. However, the prevailing notion that learning for sustainability transitions will be led by universities, technical colleges and other similar institutions is practically not feasible in much of the global south. Net-Map is a social network analysis tool that uses interviews and mapping to help people understand, visualise, discuss, and improve situations in which many different actors influence outcomes (Schiffer and Hauck, 2010). In response to the pressing need for new approaches to the development and diffusion of sustainability skills, this paper evaluates Net-Map’s suitability as a methodological tool for educators, knowledge brokers and students seeking to enhance the navigability of the often complex and uncharted occupational pathways they encounter. To do this, the research applied Net-Map to an emerging sustainability niche within the food system in order to map the learning pathways of successful sustainability pioneers. We found that Net-Map was helpful in identifying diffuse informal knowledge networks and teaching resources. Being free, quick to learn and easy to use, Net-Map is a potentially low-cost method for circumventing traditionally costly approaches to curriculum development and accreditation – assisting community-based actors to make sense of the informal knowledge and competency networks that support emerging career fields. In emerging career fields such as organic farming, where pioneer knowledge is fragmented, poorly documented and often disregarded by mainstream-science, Net-Map could be useful in the preparatory phase of curriculum planning and design, providing training designers, course conveners and facilitators with contextually informed insights.

- Description: The synthesis of zinc (II) tri (tert-butyl phenoxy) mono cinnamic acid Pc (complex 1) is reported for the first time in this work. Complex 1 and the reported zinc (II) tri (tert-butyl), mono cinnamic acid phthalocyanine (2), zinc (II) mono cinnamic acid substituted phthalocyanine (3) and zinc (II) tetra cinnamic acid substituted phthalocyanine (4) are conjugated to cysteine capped silver nanoparticles (cys-AgNPs) through an amide bond. The photophysicochemical properties and the photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) activities of the Pc-cys-AgNPs conjugates and the Pcs alone on S. Aureus are reported. Improved triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields were observed for the conjugated complexes compared to Pcs alone, due to the heavy atom effect of cys-AgNPs. Asymmetric complexes 1,2, 3 and their respective conjugates recorded higher photosensitizing properties and PACT activities compared to 4 and 4-cys-AgNPs, respectively. Higher log reductions and percentage reductions of S. Aureus were recorded for conjugated complexes compared to ZnPcs only, showing enhanced PACT activities due to their higher singlet oxygen quantum yields.

- Description: Heterogenous photocatalysts based on electrospun fibers composed of polyvinylpyrrolidone and titanium propoxide were prepared and heated at 500, 750 and 950 °C to obtain anatase and rutile fibers. The fibers were then decorated with Pd and Co nanoparticles as well as a symmetrical zinc phthalocyanine (Pc). The fibrous materials obtained have a paper-like macroscopic appearance allowing for easy handling and separation. The photocatalytic activities of the new materials were evaluated for the generation of H2 upon UV (368 nm) or visible (630 nm) light excitation. Depending on the heat treatment or the post-synthetic decoration method, the materials show higher, or similar, activity compared to P25-TiO2, with superior ease of separation. The catalysts showed ability to degrade organic matter, with MeOH used as a model compound. This is of considerable importance for potential water treatment applications that will require flow-compatible materials.

- Description: Photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) is being actively researched as a possible alternative for antimicrobial agents. This study focuses on the application of neutral indium 5-p-carboxyphenyl-10-15-20-(tri-4-pyridyl)porphyrin and cationic indium 5-p-carboxyphenyl-10-15-20-(tris-4-methylpyridyl)-porphyrin triiodide conjugated to 6-mercapo-1-hexanol functionalized Ag/CuFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles for photo-inactivation of S. aureus bacteria. Comparative studies were done on quaternized and unquaternized indium porphyrin complexes conjugated to Ag/CuFe2O4, where log reduction of 9.27 was obtained for quaternized conjugate and 0.83 for unquaternized conjugate.
