- Description: Change is inevitable and change is necessary; in order for organisations to remain competitive they have to keep on evolving, ensuring that the organisational vision and strategy are aligned to the organisation’s vision, importantly, that the employees have a fulfilling work experience in order to do their best and live up to the organisation’s values. In the high-pressured, agile work environment, it is necessary for the organisations to move their processes with the times, providing information on digital platforms while upskilling the employees and saving time. Employee engagement is defined as the force that drives the organisational success and when achieved it eventually leads to high morale, employee retention, employee trust and loyalty to the organisation and organisational performance The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of change management process on the employee engagement in the workplace. The three identified main factors were readiness for change, process of change and leadership involvement. Change initiatives have been reported to fail by 70% if not implemented effectively and can have a negative impact on how the employees receive the change. The mixed method study approach was used, starting with interviews with the four key players in the organisation to establish how they perceive change and gather new information. It was followed by a quantitative e-survey to departments which have had technological change in the past year. The empirical results showed that the there is a relationship between the factors of change and employee engagement. Importance of readiness for change was highlighted, supporting the need for an organisational analysis followed by a detailed change plan aligned to the organisational vision. Process of change had a positive significance for employee engagement while lack of leadership involvement showed the negative relationship to employee engagement. The findings show how change leadership should work in sync with organisational leadership at all times and should incorporate change management into the organisational DNA.

The level of employee engagement in South Africa according to the polls remains very low. On the other front, innovative ideas prove to be a vital element of organisational innovativeness and progress. Today’s business environment is unstable and to remain relevant in the marketplace, it is imperative for organisations to embrace innovation and become responsive to changing customer needs. South Africa’s population is very diverse coming second in diversity after the United States. The diversity of South Africa as a national endowment could be investigated to see if it could be leveraged to improve organisational innovation and effectiveness through work engagement. Being mindful of the fact that being diverse is not equal to being inclusive, inclusion is also investigated to see its effect on work engagement and organisational innovation. The principle of fairness (equity) was also investigated with relation to engagement and innovation. The purpose of the study is to assist organisations to improve employee engagement and organisational innovation by taking advantage of the national factor endowment of diversity and inclusion. Equity is investigated as an important principle that could possibly have an effect on employee engagement or organisational innovation. The findings were that diversity and inclusion have a significant relationship with employee engagement and organisational innovativeness while equity has a significant relationship with organisational innovativeness. Recommendations were therefore made to leaders of the organisations to embrace workforce diversity, inclusion and fairness in organisational structures and practices in order to realise improved employee engagement and organisational innovativeness.

- Description: The goal of this study was to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the quality of healthcare in the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex in the province of the Eastern Cape in South Africa. The assessment was made on the basis of the perceptions of patients of the features of the hospital and the services which it provides to patients. A quantitative research design was adopted to conduct the study. The data was derived from a questionnaire which the research assistants administered to patients in a number of surgical clinics in the hospital. Across-sectional sample of 350 patients, who were making their first follow-up visits after having previously been admitted to the hospital to undergo surgical procedures, was obtained by making use of convenience sampling. The researcher made use of the modified SERVQUAL scale for hospital services in order to measure the extent to which the participants agreed with statements pertaining to five specific dimensions of the quality of service, namely, tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy. The overall gap score was negative (-0.52), which indicates that the respondents perceived that the quality of healthcare which the hospital provided was unsatisfactory. Although the gap scores for each of five of the dimensions of quality were negative, the two dimensions whose gap scores reflected the highest levels of dissatisfaction were reliability (-0.66) and responsiveness (-0.63). The findings of this study could assist the Department of Health of the Eastern Cape Provincial Government to appreciate the perceptions of the public of the quality of healthcare which the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex provides to patients. The recommendations which are made on the basis of the findings of this study could assist policymakers and members of the senior management of the hospital complex to formulate policies which result in substantial improvements in the quality of healthcare in the hospital complex. Further research is still needed to identify the factors which adversely affect the performance of the staff of the hospital and limit their ability to provide satisfactory healthcare consistently to patients.

Possible futures for the health system of South Africa towards 2030

To improve access to health services and move towards universal health coverage the South African government has decided to implement National Health Insurance (NHI). The implementation of such health reforms to the health system of SA is further complicated by the rapidly changing technological environment in the form of the fourth industrial revolution. The NHI and the fourth industrial revolution are expected to impact on the health system of the country, but what the impacts will be remain unclear. A review of the theory and practice of future studies support the notion that change management for healthcare organisations operating within the SA health system must be approached differently. The volatility introduced by the NHI within the context of the fourth industrial revolution necessitates the creation of strategic foresight using futures methodologies. The research has attempted to gain an understanding of the impact of National Health Insurance and the fourth industrial revolution on the health system of SA through the creation of possible futures for the health system, in the form of four alternative scenarios, towards 2030. The six pillars of future studies as stated by Inayatullah (2008) were used as a research methodology and assisted in the mapping, anticipation and timing of the issues facing the health system. The future was deepened using causal layered analysis and alternative futures were constructed through double-variable scenario creation methods using the worldviews identified during the causal layered analysis. From the constructed scenarios the research attempted to identify the preferred future for the health system of South Africa. The preferred future was used in the development of the Future Vision for the Health System of South Africa towards 2030. It is clear to achieve the desired health system towards 2030 the private and the public sectors must collaborate to create a hybrid health system which is supported by fourth industrial revolution technologies.

- Description: This research was a Case Study on the role of Flexible Working in achieving a Work – Life Balance, based on the Information Technology Consultants of Kestrel Business Solutions – a company based in London, the United Kingdom. The study set out to determine what aspects of flexible working can reduce work - related stress; home - related stress; improve personal wellbeing; identify the pitfalls of flexible working, and to recommend mitigating actions. The literature review identified five different, but complimentary theories that included: The Spill over Theory; Balanced Theory; Resource Based Theory; Compensation Theory and the Wellness Theory to unpack and explore the concept of Work - Life Balance. The study followed a predominantly qualitative methodology approach and used thematic analysis to identify key ideas from the data. Interviews and questionnaires were used to obtain data from the respondents, in addition to being a data triangulation exercise. From a population of 10 subjects - purposeful sampling was used to select a sample of 10 respondents - made up of 3 males and 7 females. All respondents were employees of Kestrel Business Solutions. 6 respondents were interviewed and given questionnaires to fill out. 6 face to face interviews were conducted, and 6 questionnaires completed until saturation was achieved - indicating a survey response rate of 100%. The results from the data collection generally showed how aspects of flexible working like telecommuting, flexitime and homeworking ultimately helped the employees to achieve a Work-Life Balance - by primarily influencing how they balanced their work, home, and personal commitments. Importantly, the study also identified pitfalls of flexible working; like employees feeling isolated and the pressure to perform. Potential mitigating efforts identified in the study included, providing more company support and education for flexible working initiatives. The study concluded by acknowledging the limitations of the study, which included time constraints and the small population, and sample size of the study. In its conclusion, the study identified recommendations for future studies like: increasing the population and sample size, and devoting more time to the study, for more generalized and conclusive findings.

- Description: It is important for Higher Education Institutions to have marketing strategies that focus on understanding the customer needs in the 21st century. The rapid growth of the internet and the Web 2.0 have led individuals and organisations into applying social media as a branding and communication tool. Hence this study focused on comparing the influence of social media on four Eastern Cape universities in relation to social media metrics and visually demonstrated through the computer-generated human face, the Chernoff faces. Using diary and literature study, the study adopted a case study research design. The researcher sampled four universities using a purposeful sampling technique. Chernoff faces were used to enhance the ability of the reader to immediately understand significant occurrences based on social media metric indicators. To demonstrate multivariate data, the faces brought an original method of expressing complex data as opposed to traditional methods. The study found that Brand management and Resource-Based Theory (RBT) plays a pivotal role in social media marketing as this can lead to organisations having a competitive advantage. The study recommended that strategies to utilise social media as a resource should be put in place to lead to competitive advantage, as suggested by the Resource-based theory. The study concluded that various social media factors can influence the brand image of universities, positively (going to buy) and negatively (never going to buy). Both positive and negative purchase intent are found to be an influential indicator on the brand as they are affected by customer satisfaction.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the use of a novel method, Chernoff Faces, to assess and compare the social media brand images of six insurance companies in South Africa based on social conversation measurement. The intention of research was towards observing existing situations at hand and pointing out the game changers that can provide the industry with a new leap. Social media are multidimensional and understanding them requires tracking different measures simultaneously. Integrating social media into a communication strategy leads to a problem in finding the best way to portray and communicate multivariate data. It is essential to find the best way to represent and transmit the data so that marketing executives can quickly and easily monitor changes in brand images. Previous studies have successfully proved the possibility of using this method to gauge a "snapshot in time." This study took the concept further by closely monitoring the results for a set of brands over a period to account for the dynamic nature of social media. Accordingly, the study was a longitudinal study of 30 days. Data on the insurance companies was collected from Social Mention, a social media search and analysis platform that aggregates user-generated content into a single stream of information. A tool in the statistical software Stata, Chernoff's faces, was used to analyse the results by generating facial expressions to the metrics associated with the social mentions of each of the insurance companies. The resulting facial expressions were then analysed to recognise the more favourable and stable brands and those that need appropriate risk management. Managing Social Media is challenging as managers must always keep it as positive as possible. Brand managers, therefore, need a better tool to gauge the mood in social media conversations due to the fast-changing nature of social media and the importance of social media to business especially insurance.

This has led to the emergence of e-commerce, a borderless channel, which both regionally local and international retailers have exploited. The low income market segment of e-commerce customers has been found to be apprehensive of e-commerce due to trust concerns over card-mandating payment solutions, living a large unbanked market in developing economies excluded from the e-commerce experience due to a lack of inclusive electronic payment systems. Mobile payment systems offer a source of distinctive value for both merchants and consumers, thereby increasing the e-commerce market. Due to their high level of adoption, mobile payments are capable of providing a mode for reaching new market segments and opening opportunities to bring value propositions to segments that had been unreachable in the past. This study sought to uncover the perception of consumers in an emerging economy about the use of mobile payments as a mode of remittance in e-commerce transactions. This was done by describing the factors that influence the intention to use mobile payments on internet stores. The study also investigated the effect of demographic profile on intention and use in the South African context. An online questionnaire was developed and distributed to a convenience sample of retail consumers on social media platforms, and the collected data was analysed using the SPSS statistical package. The results confirmed that compatibility, personal innovativeness, perceived trust, perceived regulatory support, and promotional benefit have a direct influence to intention to use mobile payments as a mode of remittance for e-commerce transactions. Furthermore, social influence does not have a direct influence on intention to use mobile payments in the South African context. The results also revealed that, in South Africa, the largest population group, male and female gender groups do not differ in their opinion around mobile payments. The study findings illustrate the importance of context when considering technology innovation introduction to a new market. Despite social influence not being found to be a factor for intention to use mobile payments in the South African context, the same conclusion should not be generalised as it is contextual. Recommendations and conclusions were drawn from the discussion of the findings of this research.

This uncertainty and instability has the potential to impact the career aspirations of financial advisors in the insurance sector as they experience many hurdles to growth. This volatility also impacts organisations as attraction into the role diminishes. Human Resource Management practices which are meant to fulfill strategic partnership role within organisations are meant to guide business accordingly to attract and retain top talent. This paper presents an investigation of Human Resource Management (HRM) practices within an insurance company and the impact of Human Resources Management practices on the organisational commitment of financial advisors. An empirical study, consisting of an online questionnaire, was conducted amongst 102 employees from an insurance company in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The analysis revealed that the relationship of HRM practices to organisational commitment outcomes in the insurance company was exclusive in that only three of the five HRM practices being recruitment and selection; training and development; and workplace culture and climate, were found to be positively and significantly related to the organisational commitment of advisors. It was concluded that recruitment and selection plays an important role in matching the right skills, abilities and personality for the job. There is a critical need for the shift in focus from academy classroom learning to on-the-job practical training and mentorship from senior advisors. Thirdly, workplace climate and culture is a key determinant into whether an employee will stay and creating a space which is diverse, flexible and harnesses work-life integration will be more critical moving forward.

Organisations need to innovate to remain attractive in the global economy. To be able to address the needs of customers in a quick way, organisations need to be cognizant of the social and technological shifts so they can be in position to exploit them to their advantage. In today’s competitive environment, innovation is a driver of change and organisations that resist that change are in danger. Regardless of the scope of the resource pool and the organisational excellence, companies cannot shield themselves from change. While change comes with risk and uncertainty, it also presents opportunity. The choice to innovate must be supported by actions that foster an environment in which people are comfortable to be innovative. An organisational climate that inspires members to engage in innovation is vital for the innovation efforts of an organisation to be successful. The purpose of the study was to determine the leadership practices that can be adopted to build and sustain a` work environment that fosters innovation. To achieve this objective a conceptual model was constructed from literature and the relationship between six constructs was tested, namely, organisational culture, leadership style, leadership behaviour, reward and recognition, training and development, and a climate for innovation. To test the conceptual model, a questionnaire was sent to 82 participants working in the media and entertainment industry. The results of the data analysis highlighted that the organisational culture and the leadership behaviour have a significant positive relationship with the climate for innovation. Positive changes in the organisational culture and leadership behaviour are likely to lead to a more conducive organisational climate for innovation.

The study had four objectives, namely to: (1) describe the cultural value of accountability; (2) analyse how strategic leadership and relational leadership roles were exercised to address post-merger integration challenges; (3) analyse how a leader applied selected primary mechanisms to shape organisational culture; (4) analyse how strategic and relational leadership complemented each other in addressing the challenges of post-merger integration and thereby shaping a culture of accountability; and (5) describe how some of the secondary articulation and reinforcing mechanisms supported the culture that was created through primary mechanisms. The literature reviewed, identified some of the critical challenges that are experienced in a post-merger integration, and highlighted the role of leadership in culture formation. The critical challenges that were identified are as follows: What is the vision and organisational purpose? How does the leader structure the organisation? What kind of culture does the leader need to create? How does the leader maintain trust and keep communication with employees? How does a leader build new core competences and develop human capital? Two leadership approaches were adopted, namely strategic and relational leadership. These two leadership approaches were selected because, based on a review of the literature, they appeared to address these post-integration challenges. The roles associated with strategic leadership that were investigated, were creating a vision and purpose for the organisation, developing core competences and developing human capital. From the perspective of relational leadership, this study was concerned with how a leader communicated through regular formal and informal dialogues to keep employees abreast of things, and how the leader built trust. In reviewing the literature linking leadership and culture, the work of Schein (2010) featured prominently. Schein (2010) referred to primary embedding mechanisms that create culture and secondary articulation and reinforcing mechanisms that reinforce or support the culture being created through the primary mechanisms. This study looked at how that happens, and hence six propositions were crafted from the literature. These propositions are as follows: (1) Formal dialogues between the leader and employees demonstrate what the leader pays attention to, measures and controls, which then clarifies what the employees are accountable for. (2) What the leader pays attention to, measures and controls during regular informal interactions between the leader and employees, contributes to strong mutual relationships between them, which promotes ownership and accountability amongst employees for their actions. (3) A leader who behaves consistently when handling critical incidents and organisational crises, is trusted by employees, who then act responsibly and take full responsibility for their actions, and even their mistakes. (4) A leader creates a vision and sense of purpose for the organisation through what he pays attention to, measures and controls, thereby clarifying for employees what they are required to do. (5) A leader who pays attention to developing the organisational core competence and allocates resources to it, instils confidence in his employees with regards to carrying out their own responsibilities. (6) A leader who develops human capital through the allocation of additional resources, thereby instilling confidence in employees who are willing and able to realise or take up their responsibilities. This research adopted a qualitative approach. Data was collected through conducting interviews and the analysis of relevant documents. A deductive thematic analysis of the data was used for the purpose of identifying, analysing and reporting patterns, or themes within the data collected. The research confirmed these propositions as being relevant to the case study. It also confirmed that strategic and relational leadership as reflected in the propositions have complemented one another in the successful implementation of the post-merger integration, thereby shaping a particular culture. It was concluded that the challenges associated with a post-merger integration could not have been addressed through only one of the leadership approaches. The findings of the study also recognised that an architectural role was also required. That is, in a merger, the structure has to be carefully designed and not taken for granted. It was therefore recognised as a critical leadership role. The study considers the implications of the findings and makes recommendations for managers of this organisation, as well as for other organisations that are engaging in a post-merger integration. It further outlines the limitations, delimitations as well as the contribution that the study has made to the body of knowledge. Some of the recommendations made for further research were to analyse how other primary mechanisms that were not part of the propositions may shape the organisational culture; and to research how architectural leadership roles combine with strategic and relational leadership to address post-merger integration challenges. Lastly, this study has explained how leadership, through various mechanisms, shaped a culture of accountability. Other studies can be done using a similar design with different theories of leadership and other mechanisms that apply to shaping other kinds of cultural values.

Traditional Dealerships’ Operational Capacity to Sell Electric Vehicles

- Description: The global automotive industry faces an emerging turning point where an unceasing dependence on costly fossil fuels and a growing concern over global warming is driving the industry to form new possibilities. A major challenge for decision makers is to assure that the consumer market is informed about both the advantages and disadvantageous of electric vehicle technology. A significant amount of research has been done on both the operational ability of electric vehicles and consumer resistance and preferences towards new technology and the marketing of electric vehicles. Given the retail relationship between key industry stakeholders such as the Original Equipment Manufacturers, franchised dealership network and potential electric vehicle consumers, the transition towards new electric vehicle technology represents an important strategic realignment for dealerships in order to sell electric vehicles along with traditional internal combustion engine vehicles and questions their operational capacity to do so successfully. The primary data was collected from a sample of forty respondents by means of an online questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed from literature and using similar extracts from other electric vehicle consumer resistance studies questionnaires. An email containing a Universal Resource Link (URL) to the questionnaire was sent and by means of snowball sampling, a representative sample of forty-eight respondents participated in the study who fully completed all the sections of the questionnaire. Interviews were conducted with Senior Management of local dealerships in the Port Elizabeth area. The interviews were executed in the same method as a ‘walk-in’ potential customer. Participation therefore was based on the willingness, readiness and availability of management. Three dealerships who already sell electric vehicles as well as two dealership who still only sell traditional internal combustion engine vehicles participated in the interviews. In addition, the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) commented on the strategic realignment of the South African industry as a whole. The results indicated that the majority of respondents believed that electric vehicles were a suitable alternative to the traditional internal combustion engine vehicle and were willing to personally contribute to improved sustainable mobility. Uncertainty remained with consumers and there was unwillingness to purchase and electric vehicle within the next five years. Electric vehicles were also believed to perform better but there was uncertainty about the return that would be achieved from investment in an electric vehicle despite the reduction in their carbon footprint and the associated image boost with family and colleagues. Furthermore, there appeared to be an alignment amongst the interviewees that South Africa does not face and immediate threat in terms of electric vehicles as the anticipated tipping point is envisaged to be in the region of 2030 onwards, however NADA as a professional industry body still warns that this is not a set point in time and that market forces could change the outlook and adaption dramatically.

This behaviour is attributable to the conditions that they had do study in. Buildings and campuses have colonial names, lectures mostly include White people’s intellectual contributions. Colonialism included colonial knowledge and denied African practices and existence. For centuries African philosophy was excluded and marginalised, which caused much pain and inhumanity. Higher education institutions remain detached from the developmental changes of African communities. Silence in academic disciplines was overwhelming Eurocentric / Westernised. Transformation of Higher Education curriculum in South Africa requires inclusion of African philosophy, and acknowledgement and respect for other cultures’ values, languages and knowledge. Educators play a pivotal role in transferring knowledge to students and producing the leaders for the future. Colonisation has ruled for decades and the effects thereof are still felt in various aspects of life. The education platform can break colonialism and if allowed, bring restoration to indigenous people. South African universities can contribute to society in transforming and decolonising curriculum and giving indigenous people and knowledge their rightful place. An education system free from colonialism positions students to add value to society as their worldviews are taken into consideration. This paper investigates the factors that could lead to a decolonised curriculum. Higher Education institutions have a role to play in ensuring a University free form colonial power and inequality. Decolonisation of the intellectual landscape will result in the decolonisation of the mind.

Digitization is fast changing how customers perceive value, customers have become spoilt for choice and thus banks have to implement strategies that will help them to increase their market share by keeping the customers they currently have and strategies that help them to acquire more customers. A strategy on its own will not support organizational goals, if it is not adopted by the executers – the employees on the ground. It is important for leaders to support the strategic goals of an organization by ensuring that the goals become a culture, a way of doing things in that organization. This study is an analysis of how leadership shaped a culture of customer centricity in the branch of a bank. The objectives of the study were to: (1) To describe the culture of customer centricity that was cultivated by the branch manager; (2) To analyse what the leader pays attention to, measures and controls on a regular basis, in support of a culture of customer centricity; (3) To analyse how the leader conducts deliberate role modelling, teaching and coaching in support of a culture of customer centricity; (4) To analyse whether - and if so how - the quality of the dyadic relations between the leader and her followers enables or disables the effect of cultural mechanisms on the culture of customer centricity; and (5) To analyse how the leader built high quality relations with her followers The study took the form of a case study of a branch of a bank, where nine universal bankers and their former leader were interviewed. The data were then analysed using a deductive thematic analysis. The findings met all objectives of the study and the findings supported the propositions. The findings also discovered that reward and recognition contributed to the shaping of a culture of customer centricity. In conclusion the limitations and delimitations of the study are acknowledged, and recommendations are made. The study contributes towards the Social Exchange Theory (SET) and demonstrates how high-quality leader member exchange (LMX) relations can be developed. Several recommendations are made for further studies on factors shaping a culture of customer centricity, and implications for management are considered.

- Description: Health care facilities in the South African public sector have, over time, become notorious for poor service delivery, peppered with issues of poor governance, weak administration capabilities, and ailing working conditions. Often, the consequence hereof is a loss of good talent to both the private sector and health sectors abroad, all the while placing more strain on institutional service delivery capabilities. To achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030, the strengthening of health systems is critical. The purpose of this study is therefore to offer supportable solutions to improve and maintain a sustainable rehabilitation service in the Nelson Mandela Metro through successful retention of staff. The aim of this study then is to investigate the influence that Human Resources (HR) processes, working conditions and leadership have had on retention of staff. A review of the available literature was conducted on possible factors that contribute to the problem and the solutions thereof. The study population included all staff that worked in rehabilitation service departments in the public health institutions in the Nelson Mandela Metro, namely; physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and audiology. The sample constituted n=51 respondents. Data was collected via a questionnaire as the selected measurement tool. The data was analysed using the statistical data analysis software system, TIBCO Statistica (version 13), and selected methods for quantitative data. The results of the study showed that only HR processes were significantly and positively (r = 0.67, p < 0.05) related to retention. It means that satisfying the HR needs of this population is most likely to retain their employ and improve and maintain rehabilitation service delivery in the selected metro. Descriptive statistics of all the variables were also calculated and reported on. Lastly, the managerial implications of the study findings were reported on.

- Description: Health care facilities in the South African public sector have, over time, become notorious for poor service delivery, peppered with issues of poor governance, weak administration capabilities, and ailing working conditions. Often, the consequence hereof is a loss of good talent to both the private sector and health sectors abroad, all the while placing more strain on institutional service delivery capabilities. To achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030, the strengthening of health systems is critical. The purpose of this study is therefore to offer supportable solutions to improve and maintain a sustainable rehabilitation service in the Nelson Mandela Metro through successful retention of staff. The aim of this study then is to investigate the influence that Human Resources (HR) processes, working conditions and leadership have had on retention of staff. A review of the available literature was conducted on possible factors that contribute to the problem and the solutions thereof.
