A potential biological control agent, the stem-wilter, Catorhintha schaffneri Brailovsky and Garcia (Coreidae), was collected in southern Brazil and imported into quarantine in South Africa. Field host range data suggested that C. schaffneri has a host range restricted to P. aculeata. No-choice nymph survival tests were then conducted on 27 test plant species in 9 families. Survival to the adult stage was only recorded on P. aculeata and the closely related Pereskia grandifolia Haw. (Cactaceae). Mortality was significantly higher on P. grandifolia with only 3% of the nymphs reaching the adult stage compared with 74% on P. aculeata indicating that P. aculeata is the primary host plant. P. grandifolia is native in South America and is of no agricultural importance in South Africa so any feeding on P. grandifolia in South Africa would have no negative environmental or economic consequences. In other tests, adult survival on P. aculeata [25.8 days (SE ± 3.74)] was significantly longer than on other test plant species [4.3 days (SE ± 0.36)] further confirming the host specificity of the species. Impact studies conducted in quarantine indicated that C. schaffneri is damaging to P. aculeata, significantly reducing the number of leaves and the shoot lengths of plants, even at relatively low insect densities. C. schaffneri is safe for release in South Africa and is likely to be a damaging and effective agent.

Machine learning offers a helpful tool with which to detect cyber attacks. However, it is impossible to deploy a machine-learning algorithm to detect attacks in a non-centralized network. Software Defined Networks (SDNs) offer a centralized view of a network, allowing machine learning algorithms to detect malicious activity within a network. The InSDN dataset is a recently-released dataset that contains a set of sniffed packets within a virtual SDN. These sniffed packets correspond to various attacks, including DDoS attacks, Probing and Password-Guessing, among others. This study aims to evaluate various machine learning models against this new dataset. Specifically, we aim to evaluate their classification ability and runtimes when trained on fewer features. The machine learning models tested include a Neural Network, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, Multilayer Perceptron, Logistic Regression, and K-Nearest Neighbours. Cluster-based algorithms such as the K-Nearest Neighbour and Random Forest proved to be the best performers. Linear-based algorithms such as the Multilayer Perceptron performed the worst. This suggests a good level of clustering in the top few features with little space for linear separability. The reduction of features significantly reduced training time, particularly in the better-performing models.

- Description: Globally, cities are planning for resilience through urban greening initiatives as governments understand the importance of urban forests in improving quality of life and mitigating climate change. However, the persistence of urban forests and the ecosystem benefits they provide are threatened by climate change, and systematic assessments of causes of tree dieback and mortality in urban environments are rare. Long-term monitoring studies and adaptive management are needed to identify and prevent climate change-driven failures and mortality. Research and monitoring when coupled with systematic forecasting will enable governments to incorporate climate change resilience into urban forestry planning. Future scenarios in which urban forests are resilient or in decline will depend on the management and planning actions we make today.

The CoPcs and conjugates were applied as electrode modifiers on a glassy carbon electrode in the electrochemical sensing of nitrite. Of the CoPcs alone, complex 1 performed better than complex 2 regarding the limits of detection (LoD) recorded (5.74 μM for 1 and 15.1 μM for 2). Regarding the conjugates/nanocomposites, the π-π stacked conjugate derived from complex 2 (2πNGQDs) demonstrated highly favourable electrochemical potential with an LoD value of 0.70 μM. The nanocomposites fashioned from complex 1 were marred by a reduced loading which rendered the conjugates poor electrochemical sensors. These observations however do not disqualify GQDs as complementary nanomaterials to phthalocyanines but rather shed light on seeking alternative routes to increasing the Pc loading in conjugates (more so in π-π stacked conjugates).

- Description: Corrosion inhibition performances and adsorption behaviour at the aluminum-HCl solution interface were investigated for reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (rGONS), tetrakis-[4,4′-((4-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-1,2-bis(phenoxy)] (diphthalocyaninato gallium (III) chloride) (2) and tetrakis-4-(hexadecane-1,2-dioxyl)-bis(phthalocyaninato gallium(III) chloride) (1). Corrosion inhibition effects of rGONS, 1 and 2 were evaluated alone and in combination in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid solution using electrochemical techniques. The mechanism of aluminum corrosion inhibition revealed predominantly anodic character for rGONS and predominantly cathodic character for 1, 2, and conjugates with rGONS . The polarization technique gave inhibition efficiency values of 96.5% and 96.9% respectively for 1 and 2, which increased in the presence of rGONS to 97.4% and 98.1%, respectively, for the highest concentrations of 1 and 2. Scanning electron microscopy revealed effective metal surface protection by the inhibitors by formation of protective films.

- Description: Corrosion inhibition performances and adsorption behaviour at the aluminum-HCl solution interface were investigated for reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (rGONS), tetrakis-[4,4′-((4-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-1,2-bis(phenoxy)] (diphthalocyaninato gallium (III) chloride) (2) and tetrakis-4-(hexadecane-1,2-dioxyl)-bis(phthalocyaninato gallium(III) chloride) (1). Corrosion inhibition effects of rGONS, 1 and 2 were evaluated alone and in combination in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid solution using electrochemical techniques. The mechanism of aluminum corrosion inhibition revealed predominantly anodic character for rGONS and predominantly cathodic character for 1, 2, and conjugates with rGONS . The polarization technique gave inhibition efficiency values of 96.5% and 96.9% respectively for 1 and 2, which increased in the presence of rGONS to 97.4% and 98.1%, respectively, for the highest concentrations of 1 and 2. Scanning electron microscopy revealed effective metal surface protection by the inhibitors by formation of protective films.

- Description: Floating aquatic weed infestations have negative socio-economic and environmental consequences to the ecosystems they invade. Despite the long history of invasion by macrophytes, only a few studies focus on their impacts on biodiversity, while the ecological benefits of biological control programmes against these species have been poorly quantified. We investigated the process of biotic homogenization following invasion by Pistia stratiotes on aquatic biodiversity, and recovery provided by biological control of this weed. Biotic homogenization is the increased similarity of biota as a result of introductions of non-native species. The study quantified the effect of P. stratiotes, and its biological control through the introduction of the weevil, Neohydronomus affinis on recruitment of benthic macroinvertebrates to artificial substrates. Mats of P. stratiotes altered the community composition and reduced diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates in comparison to an uninvaded control. However, reduction in percentage cover of the weed through biological control resulted in a significant increase in dissolved oxygen, and recovery of the benthic macroinvertebrate community that was comparable to the uninvaded state. - Description: Patterns of higher plant species richness and beta diversity were assessed using standard Modified-Whittaker plots in relation to land use, slope position and mean annual rainfall across a rainfall gradient in the savanna areas of the Bushbuckridge lowveld, South Africa. In particular, comparison of communal areas with adjacent protected areas was important in showing the impacts of potential changes in land use within an overarching catchment management plan. Although most of the protected areas considered preservation of biodiversity as their primary goal, they were characterised by significantly fewer plant species than the adjacent, highly utilised, communal lands, at both the plot and point scale. Slope position also had a significant effect on plant species richness, with eutrophic bottomlands having c. 30% more species than the dystrophic toplands. This adds weight to the need for greater public awareness for the judicious use and management of the sensitive bottomlands, which fringe the primary drainage lines that are vital for sustained supplies of good quality surface water in this semi-arid environment. The total number of species increased with increasing mean annual rainfall across the rainfall gradient. This suggests that, if the catchment management plan aims to identify additional areas for conservation, the higher rainfall areas should be the first to be assessed. Species turnover was greater along the rainfall gradient than the catenal gradient between toplands and bottomlands.

The paper has potential value for educators/trainers interested in increasing the relevance of protected area workplace learning and its congruence to learners’ realities.

The need to formulate a conceptual framework and adapt it to the South African context, requires careful mapping of the elements of 4IR, the relevant infrastructure and resources There has been perceptions instigating resistance towards the SDGs, hence the need to develop the conceptual framework. The exploratory research method fitted well as its nature a systematic review to effect and respond to the abovementioned investigation. The study reviewed about 70 articles of which 53 of those were peerreviewed articles within 4th industrial revolution in South Africa as set for ecosystem. Due to limited research on the topic, possible impacting variables that added immeasurable value were explored as contributing factors the study. Both reviewed literature and government archive on 4th industrial revolution revealed how the ecosystems of 4IR accelerated the achievement of SDGs in South Africa. The study further singled smart factories, smart cities, integrated systems, green technologies, cybernetics, the internet of people, the internet of energy, and the internet of things as contributing factors towards 4IR. The recommended the applicability of the ecosystems onto the South African context to advance innovation agenda to achieve green energy, sustainable water provision, waste management, trade in low-carbon products, cleaner and greener technologies, green buildings, green chemistry and sustainable transport, as well as improved air quality.

- Description: Lantana camara L. is an invasive alien shrub of worldwide significance due to its impacts on biodiversity. It can alter the soil properties of invaded ecosystems and, as a result, affect management outcomes. However, knowledge on the impacts of L. camara on soil properties is scanty, especially in South Africa, despite the pervasive presence of the plant in the country. In this comparative study, the soils underneath L. camara were assessed in order to determine if they had different properties (soil physico-chemical properties, penetration resistance, infiltration, hydraulic conductivity and water repellency) in comparison to the soils in adjacent natural sites in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Soil samples were collected from the top soil beneath the canopy of both L. camara-invaded and adjacent natural sites in five different locations over three summer months. The soils that were collected from underneath L. camara had a significantly higher total C, total P, gravimetric soil moisture (in November and December) and were repellent, compared to the soils in the adjacent natural sites. Soil penetration resistance was significantly higher in the natural sites than in the L. camara-invaded sites. The soil hydraulic conductivity, soil infiltration rate, soil pH, exchangeable cations and total N showed no significant difference between the invaded and the natural sites. It appears that the soils underneath L. camara have a high total C and total P, soil moisture and are repellent, thus influencing nutrient cycling, potentially making the soil properties underneath it ideal for its own growth. This could contribute to the success of L. camara as an invasive species.

- Description: Cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc), cobalt tetracarboxy phthalocyanine (CoTCPc) and cobalt octacarboxy phthalocyanine (CoOCPc), adsorbed onto glassy carbon electrodes, have been used for the electrocatalytic detection of nitrite, L-cysteine and melatonin. The modified electrodes electrocatalytically detected nitrite around 800 mV vs.Ag|AgCl, a value less positive compared to that of an unmodified glassy carbon electrode (at 950 mV vs.Ag|AgCl) and also gave detection limits in the 10-7 M range for nitrite detection. L-cysteine was detected by the modified electrodes at potentials between 0.50 to 0.65 V vs.Ag|AgCl, with L-cysteine detection limits also in the 10-7 M range. The detection limits for melatonin ranged from 10-7 to 10-6 M. CoPc-modified electrodes displayed good separation of interferents (tryptophan and ascorbic acid) in the presence of melatonin. Analyses of commercial melatonin tablets using modified electrodes gave excellent agreement with manufacturer's value for all modified electrodes of this work.
