- Description: The research conducted for the dissertation entitled “An exploratory study of King IVTM: The effect of principle four and its practices in achieving good performance by selected JSE-listed companies”, aimed to determine whether principle four, namely the creation of value, and the application by an organisation of the recommended practices as set out in King IVTM, contribute to the achievement of good performance. The research outlined the background to the research by describing the history of the development of corporate governance internationally and in South Africa, dating back to 1932 and culminating with the King IV™ report. It described the problem statement, defined the aims and objectives of the study, and demonstrated that the significance of the study lies in its exploration of the relationship between the King IV™ practices and good performance. The research also provided a review of the related literature, describing the theoretical background for the research, which includes the conceptual framework and propositions of the research. The research was situated in the post-positivist paradigm, the methodology was qualitative, and the method adopted was a theory-based evaluation, based on a deductive thematic analysis with pattern matching. From a detailed reading of the integrated reports and the King IVTM compliance registers of the fifteen selected listed companies for the years 2017 to 2019, hits and misses in relation to the six capitals and the eight associated practices were recorded. From this, the resulting descriptive statistics were calculated and set out in the form of tables, and a regression analysis was used to support the findings. The research revealed, based on the descriptive statistics data that there is a moderate relationship between good performance and the application of the eight practices set out in King IVTM, that contribute to the achievement of good performance. It was, therefore, concluded that the adoption of corporate governance principles and practices has an effect on performance, although it may not be significant. It is also concluded that the application of the practices in terms of principle four as set out in King IVTM is achieving its intended outcome - the creation of value. The research also concluded that good performance constitutes more than just a company performing financially and that all companies need to comply with the requirements of King IVTM, as the Code is designed to guide organisations in achieving good corporate governance. Governance principles and practices should be adopted in a way that does not unduly constrain them and is appropriate to a company’s particular circumstances. Therefore, the thesis uses wellness as a conceptual framework to understand the challenges faced by postgraduate students at Nelson Mandela University. The thesis was conducted in Port Elizabeth, at Nelson Mandela University campus of Summerstrand focusing on post-graduate students in faculty of humanities. A qualitative research design and qualitative digital ethnographic research methodology was chosen as suitable for answering the research question. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews and transcribed verbatim. Data analysis included identifying consistent themes around notions of well-being and experiences of changing university culture in the responses. The thesis main findings reveal the impact of how the changing university institutional culture impacts post-graduate student’s wellbeing.The research found that students are affected by institutional cultures and this is narrated through their experience of university life and their reflections on #MustFall movements. The participants have detailed how the cultures in the university have a greater impact on the well-being on student because the university is more than just a place of learning but their home. The participants also detailed new colloquial ways of describing well-being using the term “inerves” and “umgowo” are general ways of describing their well-being. This study was triggered by persistent misunderstanding of small group teaching that continued to hover Kentani Education District due to poor performance of learners in the classroom. To understand all these challenges experienced by teachers this study employed qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews to collect and analyse data from participants in order to get a deeper understanding of the phenomena under study. A sampling procedure was used to select respondents from two junior secondary schools of deep rural areas. The two schools were purposefully sampled. Fifteen participants participated in this study from two sampled junior secondary schools. The data were presented, analysed and discussed. A lot of themes emerged from what the participants reported and similar experiences were noted as well as different experiences. The study sought to :( a) Explore teachers ‘understanding of small group teaching. (b) Find out different approaches of small group teaching. (c) Investigate challenges faced by teachers when employing small group teaching. (d) Explore what promotes effective facilitation of small group teaching. (e) Suggest a proposed teaching model that will assist senior phase teachers in enhancing the way they perform their small group teaching. Central to what this study ascertained is the relationship between the teachers and Subject Advisors .From the findings of this study, it can be ascertained that for any teacher to succeed and understand deeply the requirements of his her profession, he she needs to have a positive attitude towards hisher career, being guided, mentored, nurtured, monitored and supported by SMTs and Subject Advisors. , Thesis (MEd) -- Faculty of Education, 2017

Academics within health professions face key stressors related to excessive workloads, and insufficient resources resulting in burnout. Some of the most pertinent consequences of burnout include deterioration in physical and mental health, incline in absenteeism and a negative impact on the well-being and performance of students, patients, and organisations. There is a lack of research conducted on health professions academics in South Africa. The overall aim of this study was, therefore, to explore burnout among health professions academic staff who worked within the Community and Health Sciences (CHS) and Dentistry faculties (collectively referred to as Health sciences faculties) at a historically disadvantaged university. The study adopted an online survey design. Participants were selected using simple random sampling. Frequency tables were used to summarise and describe the participants, while correlation analysis was used to test associative relationships. ANOVA was used to test group differences and Scheffé tests were used for posthoc analysis. Ethics clearance was obtained from the Bio-Medical Research Ethics Committee of UWC. Permission to conduct the study was given by the Registrar of UWC. Informed consent was sought from participants for their voluntary participation. Their identities were kept anonymous and responses confidential. Overall findings from the current study indicated that this sample of Health Professional Academics (HPAs) experienced moderate to high levels of burnout, as measured by the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory. No demographic factors were found to correlate with the total score of burnout. Two variables were significantly related to exhaustion, namely the level of qualification and whether participants were studying at the time of completing the survey. Furthermore, nurses and participants currently studying towards a PhD reported significantly higher levels of burnout than the rest of the sample of HPAs. I draw on lived experiences, dreams, imagination, and my grandmother’s folk tales to tell the stories I would love to have read when growing up. In my narratives, queer men navigate different spaces in urban Johannesburg and rural Limpopo. I am inspired by Bettina Judd’s words: “Writing is attached to the body… it is my Black woman, queer-identified, round-bodied hand that puts pen to paper, to keyboard, and creates whatever I create.” In retelling my grandmother’s folk tales with a queer twist, I learn from contemporary fairy tale writers like Kate Bernheimer, Angela Carter and Taisia Kitaiskaia.
