The presence of supraorbital tentacles or papillae distinguishes Clinus and Gynutoclinus from other South African genera of the subtribe Clinidi. The new species has simple supraorbital tentacles, an intermediate condition between the well-developed, at least bifid tentacles of Clinus and the simple supraorbital papillae of Gynutoclinus. For this reason Penrith's (1969) diagnosis of Clinus is modified to include the new species as well as the monospecific Gynutoclinus thereby incorporating all South African species with supraorbital papillae or tentacles.

Leptocephalus trilineatus Castle, 1964 and L. geminus Castle, 1964, with similar pigmentation from the southwest Pacific, must therefore also belong to Congrina. Ten eels from southern Mozambique (Galathea Expedition and a commercial trawler) are identified with Coloconger scholesi Chan, 1967, otherwise known only from the South China Sea. A metamorphic lepto-cephalus of C. raniceps Alcock, 1889, from off southern India (Galathea) shows remnants of larval pigmentation, and permits the recognition for the first time of the larval characters of Coloconger.

Consequently, there is growing interest in the cultural dimensions of biodiversity and the role that it plays in human well-being. This chapter presents two case studies, one on traditional brooms in South Africa, and the other on amate paper in Mexico, to demonstrate the importance of cultural values on driving demand for NTFPs. An available name for these is possibly M.singaporensis (Bleeker, 1853) although insufficient is known about M.cinereus - type eels in the Indo-Malayan region for this name to be confidently applied to the Japanese form. In many features western Indian Ocean M.cinereus closely resembles M.yamaguchiensis Katayama & Takai, 1954, also from Japan.

Smith Institute of Ichthyology; No. 53 , The eelpout genus Ophthalmolycus Regan, 1913 is reviewed and includes a new species, O. chilensis, the sixth for the genus. Ophthalmolycus conorhynchus (Garman, 1899) is redescribed from the damaged syntypes and a more recently collected specimen. A key to all species of the genus is included. Expanded diagnoses are provided for the four other species of Ophthalmolycus, recently described elsewhere.

- Description: After many deadlocks, accusations of negotiating in bad faith, marches and lunch-time pickets, more than 600,000 Public Sector Workers went on strike on 24 August 1999. The government then unilaterally implemented a 6.3% increase for public servants against their original demand of 10-15% increase. "The dispute goes back to January 1999, to a workshop dealing with the budgetary process. At this meeting the Department of Finance outlined its Medium-Term Expenditure Framework, for the first time to the public sector workers. In the MTEF the parameters for wage cuts, and 'non-negotiability’ were already set. All unions in the public service bargaining council presented their wage demands - 10% to 15%” [COSATU paper on Public Sector Workers Fight for a Living Wage.] Thereafter COSATU and government officials met over the next few months until May 1999, when a dispute was declared. On the 29th March 1999, COSATU commented ‘To the Unions it is clear, government is not prepared to negotiate - it has already made up its mind’ [COSATU document - Public Sector Workers Fight for a Living Wage] During the period May-June COSATU Unions decided to “throw their weight behind the ANC election campaign.’’[ibid.]. By the August 1999 the unions compromised their demand from 10% to 7.3% increase. Towards the end of August the government unilaterally implemented ei 6.3% increase for public sector workers, and 4% increase for itself. It then went on an ideological media campaign against the workers claiming that the 4% increase for members of parliament is much less than what has been granted to the public sector workers. , Vol. 5 no. 3
