It is partly because of the poor results and falling numbers of pupils in the discipline. Concern has also been expressed on the relevance of the Geography syllabus to the black pupils. Evidence suggests that these problems are evident in Transkei. The need therefore exists to assess pupils' attitudes towards Geography in Transkei. Arising from this background, this study sets out to assess the attitudes of secondary school pupils in Transkei towards Geography. Two hundred and thirty four pupils from eight urban and rural secondary schools in the Butterworth District of the Republic of Transkei were used in the study. Attitudes were measured in terms of "interest in Geography", "desire to study the discipline", "commitment to Geography" and the perceived relevance of the discipline. Through the use of techniques such as percentages, chi-square and principal component analysis - among others - for the analysis of the data, the following information emerged from the study: (1) Geography is generally perceived as being worthy of study; (2) Differences in responses were noted to result from a complex of factors which were grouped into home environmental factors and school environmental ones. (3) The major factor influencing attitudes towards Geography was noted to be home environmental conditions.In general pupils from lower income families expressed more positive views about the worth of Geography than those from the upper income families. From the above findings, it has been proposed that teachers and educational planners need to be made aware of these findings as they are important for classroom practice. It has also been recommended that there is a need to improve certain school practices such as taking pupils on Geography excursions more often as factors such as this were shown to improve pupils' attitudes towards the discipline.

Cohan's theory is also finally closer to that outlined by Thomas Docherty, who provides a complex reading of character as ultimately "unknowable".

The study has been underpinned by both the social learning and behavioural theory respectively. The population in this study was made up of fifteen participants. The participants come from different towns in the Eastern Cape. The researcher has utilized a non-probability sampling method specifically purposive technique. The data was analysed using a qualitative approach in a comprehensive thematic way. A collection of psycho - social effects of behaviour modification programmes on children with behavioural challenges in Gali Thembani Child and Youth Care Centre were the study outcomes.

During my experience over more than 10 years as a Science teacher in Matatiele in the Eastern Cape Province I found that Grade 10 Physical Sciences learners consistently struggled to work with resultant vectors. Many studies have shown that learners in similar contexts are generally not doing well in Science. An interpretive paradigm was used in this study, focusing on the individual or a specific group in a qualitative case study approach and a social constructivist perspective. The unit of analysis was on how Grade 10 Physical Sciences learners make sense of resultant vectors. A diagnostic test, observation and videotaped lessons, learners’ workbooks, summative test and stimulated recall interviews were used to gather data. The data were analysed inductively using a thematic approach and in relation to the main research question: How do Grade 10 Physical Sciences learners make sense of resultant vectors? The data were validated through watching the videotaped lessons with the teacher who had been observed teaching vectors. Also, transcripts of the interviews and a summary of discussions were given back to the teacher whose learners had been observed to verify the learners’ responses and check for any misconceptions. It was found that linking scientific concepts to learners’ prior knowledge enabled them to learn in a relaxed and non-threatening environment. In doing so, sense making of resultant vectors was possible. The study thus recommends that teachers should be supported in their endeavours to help learners make sense of scientific concepts during teaching and learning situations. Some language related challenges that were also encountered warrant further research.

- Description: The enormous burning of fossil fuel and deforestation have caused an increase in the atmospheric CO₂ concentration ([CO₂]) during the last century. This will invariably have profound direct and indirect effects on plant carbon metabolism. The majority of research on the effects of CO₂ enrichment on plants are short-term and are done on other crops, but very little have been done on barley. This project aimed to determine the effects of long-term CO₂ enrichment on photosynthesis, growth and grain yield on barley. Hordeum vulgare L. cvs Stirling and Schooner plants were grown from seeds in controlled environment chambers at ambient (350) and elevated (600) μmol molˉ¹ [CO₂]. Measurements of net assimilation rate (NAR), photosynthetic pigments content and growth parameters were started 7 days after germination (DAG) and continued until senescence. The anatomy of matured fully developed leaves was also monitored. Elevated [CO₂l resulted in an increase in NAR in the two cultivars from days 7 until 14, after which the stimulation of NAR of CO₂-enriched plants started to decrease. At the onset of senescence, NAR was almost equal in plants grown under both ambient and elevated [CO₂]. The response of assimilation as a function of internal [CO₂l (C₁) at the end of the experimental period showed a significant decrease in both the initial slope of the A/C₁ curves and the CO₂-saturated photosynthetic rates in the two cultivars. Stirling showed no significant changes in the content of chlorophyll α,chlorophyll б or in total carotenoids. However, Schooner showed a stimulation in chlorophyll α content at day 7, but decreased at day 28. Chlorophyll б and total carotenoids content were not affected by CO₂ enrichment. While total above-ground biomass was not affected by elevated [CO₂] in the two cultivars, total plant height decreased significantly after 14 days in Stirling whereas no significant change occurred in Schooner throughout the experimental period. Leaf area was not significantly affected by CO₂ enrichment in the two cultivars although the leaves in CO₂ enriched plants were slightly shorter. Anatomical studies reveal that leaf thickness was significantly increased by CO₂ enrichment in Stirling, but the increase was not significant in Schooner. Both cultivars did not show any significant effect on chloroplast morphology and ultrastructure as a consequence of elevated CO₂ exposure. No signs of starch accumulation were evident in variety Schooner, but Stirling showed some form of starch accumulation, under increased atmospheric [CO₂]. Elevated CO₂ resulted in a significant reduction by more than 50 % in the number of grain yield per plant in both Stirling and Schooner. Results from this study therefore indicate that CO₂ enrichment will not be beneficial in terms of growth and yield in this important crop.

- Description: World War II is a devastating event in the world‘s history, which still haunts society today. It was a war in which millions of Jews and others losing their lives because of the Nazi regime‘s prejudiced beliefs. The primary focus of this study is to investigate concepts such as death, suffering, silencing, language and literature, as well as secrecy as evidenced in selected children‘s literature. The project provides a comparative analysis of two texts which fall under the children‘s war literature genre: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen. Death, suffering and silencing were significant aspects of the war which crushed the minds and hearts of millions of human lives. Language and literacy are also important notions in the novels, as the historical context allowed for oppression through these areas. A feminist and cultural studies theoretical framework have been used as paradigms in this study as both address oppression in its many forms. The authors‘ biographical backgrounds as well as the historical context of their novels will be outlined in order to provide a context for the chosen theories. World War II relied on oppression based on race and religion. It is for this reason that I use cultural studies theory for an exploration of the many factors which enforced the oppression of the Jewish race by the Nazi regime. Furthermore, a feminist theoretical framework allows for an investigation of the oppression of women during this historical period. While the extent of suffering can never be completely understood, the novels attempt to honour the millions of lives lost by telling the stories of those forgotten. Teun A. Van Dijk‘s cultural studies theory explores manipulation, discourse and racism which are pertinent to a study of the novels. Within both The Book Thief and The Devil’s Arithmetic, there are oppressed female characters which drive the novel. Feminist studies encourage numerous forms of emancipation from a patriarchal society and these novels provide examples of females finding emancipation through various means. In conclusion, this study seeks to highlight the cultural as well as feminist aspects of the children‘s war literature novels, The Book Thief and The Devil’s Arithmetic. In addition, the concepts which will be analysed in this study allow for an in-depth understanding of the context of war within these novels. While these novels have been analysed individually, there is a gap in the literature as these novels have not yet been compared and contrasted. This study, therefore, aims to broaden and encourage further academic discussion in the field of children‘s war literature.

Within both The Book Thief and The Devil’s Arithmetic, there are oppressed female characters which drive the novel. Feminist studies encourage numerous forms of emancipation from a patriarchal society and these novels provide examples of females finding emancipation through various means. In conclusion, this study seeks to highlight the cultural as well as feminist aspects of the children‘s war literature novels, The Book Thief and The Devil’s Arithmetic. In addition, the concepts which will be analysed in this study allow for an in-depth understanding of the context of war within these novels. While these novels have been analysed individually, there is a gap in the literature as these novels have not yet been compared and contrasted. This study, therefore, aims to broaden and encourage further academic discussion in the field of children‘s war literature.

This requires protection from chemicals, scratching, weathering and UV light by applying a protective top coat (clearcoat) over the basecoat. For the clearcoat to cure into a hard protective shell it undergoes an irreversible crosslinking process. This usually takes place over the first four to five hours, depending on the formulation and weather conditions. The speed of crosslinking can be enhanced by temperature. Pot life is important as it can affect the overall quality of the painted surface. If crosslinking occurs too quickly, before the clearcoat is applied onto the surface, the clearcoat cannot be used to produce a good quality finish. The “expired” mixture is thus discarded. If used, the quality of the finished product cannot be guaranteed to last, and the paintwork may have to be redone. This often means removing the underlying paint and primer as well with the clearcoat film. Besides the time lost, the discarded clearcoat mixture often lands in the landfill, polluting ground water and the environment. It is thus important from the point of view of both the environment preservation and waste management, that as much clearcoat as possible is used without being wasted. It was proven in an earlier study (BSc Hon Formulation Science Treatise, 2011) that adding eugenol to a clearcoat mixture after crosslinking had started could reduce its viscosity, which is an indicator of crosslinking progress. Crosslinking subsequently resumed at a lower rate than in traditional blends. If stored away from oxygen and high temperatures, this blend could maintain optimum viscosity indefinitely. In this follow up study an optimum formulation was developed using D - optimal experimental design. It sought to extend the pot life to avoid waste to spray painters while saving the environment from pollution. The formulation that gave the desired viscosity after five hours of pot life was adopted. It was hypothesised that the optimum formulated clearcoat mixture would have a longer pot life than its traditional counterparts, and that it would perform just as well as the traditional clearcoat mixtures. To study the rate of crosslinking (disappearance of functional groups and appearance of the urethane bond), FTIR spectrometry was performed on a mixture produced from the optimized formula in comparison to that of a traditional mixture (the control). The rate of disappearance of functional groups was found to be lower in the eugenol mixture than in the control mixture. After six hours, eugenol was added into the control mixture, and this seemed to reduce the viscosity with the re-emergence of functional groups in the mixture. After 24 hours of crosslinking, an FTIR scan was done on the solid sample and this revealed that the eugenol mixture had crosslinked fully, with no detectable functional groups in the sample.

Historically, the difference was represented through the in loco parentis trope which contains implicit understandings as to the nature of the lecturer's authority and the ethical parameters of the relationship. With the emergence of more participatory approaches this relationship and its constitutive elements have to be re-imagined. In the first chapter I place this enquiry in the contemporary context in which the very identity of the university is changing as a result of massification and the accountability regime. In the second chapter I look at bell hooks' pedagogy as an example of such a participatory approach to education at higher education institutions. I describe her practice as a deconstructive pedagogy that is as powerful as it is because of the operation of a difference constitutive of it. In the third chapter I ask whether representing this difference in terms of the pre-modern master/apprentice offers a useful response to the questions raised by an existential praxis.

In fulfilling the primary objective the thesis had a number of subsidiary considerations. These included, firstly, a brief analysis of the approach of the software industry in South Africa to the taxation treatment of this type of software. The second consideration was a discussion and analysis of the taxation framework which differentiates between capital and revenue and the extent to which the receipts produced by internally developed software may be informative of the nature of the expenditure. The third was an analysis of the deductibility of expenditure incurred in the production of software with the fourth analysing the tests employed in the determination of whether expenditure is capital or revenue in nature. The fifth objective was to briefly analyse the accounting standards which find application in the determination of whether or not the software created can be considered a capital asset. The final subsidiary objective of the thesis was an analysis of the taxation framework applicable to software in respect of research and development incentives, as well as the position in the United States of America. Throughout the thesis the most apparent commonality is that there exists a significant level of uncertainty as to the taxation treatment of software both in South Africa and in America. The research concludes by stating that such uncertainty is prejudicial to the interests of research and development in relation to software.

A broad theoretical review on whether an unregulated or regulated (private or public) sector should be responsible for the provision of electrification is presented. This evaluation highlights the various welfare implications and efficiency considerations that appear to be relevant in the present context. The final question, which constitutes the central proposition of the thesis, establishes how electrification should be supplied in developing areas. To this end, the conditions specific to a region in Venda are discussed. An attempt is made to identify the private and external costs and benefits relating to electricity supply and the corresponding costs and benefits pertaining to alternative sources of energy. Since the incidence and nature of these costs and benefits could only be ascertained from individual households, it was deemed necessary to undertake a questionnaire study of residents in Makwarela township and its periurban settlement of Lufule-Tshisele. A number of basic trends were evident from the research results. As far as the various benefits are concerned, respondents tended to place a much higher value on both the private and external benefits associated with electricity than its alternatives. At the same time, the survey found that although the private (or monetary) cost of electricity far exceeded the corresponding cost of alternative energy sources, the external costs were significant in the case of alternative energy sources, but virtually non-existent in the case of electricity. On the whole, the Venda survey seems to suggest that an economic case can be made for involving the broader community in subsidising the supply of electricity in Makwarela, Lufule-Tshisele and other areas. While such a subsidy can perhaps be justified on distribution grounds alone, and more specifically in terms of the rapid and pronounced effect it is likely to have on the quality of life in the region, its real worth lies in the fact that it may confer certain external benefits on the community.

- Description: This dissertation situates itself within the problematic (mis)representation of women’s traumatic Holocaust experiences that are subjected to and underplayed by the patriarchal paradigm of Holocaust literature, in which male survivor-narratives constitute the norm. In using Holocaust texts from three different genres and periods, namely Anne Frank’s Diary of 1947, Ruth Klüger’s 2001 autobiography Still Alive: a Holocaust Girlhood Remembered, and Bernhard Schlink’s 1995 novel The Reader, this project approaches the role of genres in the re-articulation of traumatic experiences. It is the aim of this dissertation to explore the epistolary, autobiographic and fictional forms and their inherent conventions and to examine how they facilitate the articulation of women’s experiences that have long been underplayed and sanitized by rigid, patriarchal historical and literary discourses. In doing so, the project follows the structurally fragmenting impact of trauma on the mind and thus moves from short, fragmented forms, such as The Diary, to the more coherent autobiography, Still Alive, and eventually to the novel The Reader. In this analysis of the potential, conventions and complexities that each genre poses to the articulation of trauma, this project outlines and crosses boundaries of genre, gender, language and memory. In aiming at a comparative analysis of how different genres may facilitate the articulation of traumatic experiences differently, this project is based on the argument that the verbalization of trauma is essential for a person to regain control over their memories. This project is based on the different issues regarding the treatment of women, which arise in the selected texts. Although these three sections are interrelated, they may be considered stand-alone documents. A review of literature contends that customer satisfaction has been a topic of interest for over four decades when, in 1965, the concept was first introduced to literature by Cardozo. Even in these early stages it was hypothesized that higher customer satisfaction would lead to repeat purchasing and cross selling. Thus, for some time, researchers have proposed that a link exists between customer satisfaction and a company’s bottom line, ultimately alluding to the notion of positive associations between customer satisfaction, revenue and profitability. The corporate banking division of a South African bank has dedicated significant time and economic resources to monitoring and improving the satisfaction of their corporate customers each year. With a focus on this single corporate banking division, this quantitative study used secondary customer satisfaction data to establish whether a positive relationship between customer satisfaction with a bank representative or more formally termed, the ‘transactional banker’ (TB) and revenue at an account level exists. The study used a one-dimensional customer satisfaction construct summated from several variables or a one-dimensional multi item scale. This quantitative study made use of secondary data obtained through customer satisfaction surveys conducted with the division’s clients in three waves during September 2010, March 2011 and September 2011. At the time of data collection, telephone interviews were conducted with individuals in corporations who were customers of the corporate division within the bank. These individuals in their respective corporations were identified and surveyed because they (a) managed the primary relationship of the corporation with the banking division and (b) were senior financial decision makers of their organization’s (i.e. had the ability to influence a decision to change banks). Sample sizes of 273 (September 2010), 259 (March 2011) and 310 (September 2011) individual corporate customers were achieved through a method of stratified sampling. In this study, customers were stratified according to the TB who is responsible for their account. Within each stratum a random sample of 10 – 15 participants were included for each of the 30 TB’s. Monthly revenue data, recorded as a) credit revenue, b) overdraft revenue and c) total revenue was sourced from internal company records for each month from September 2010 to January 2012. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to assess whether a positive correlation between the two variables of customer satisfaction and revenue exists. This was followed by Ordinary Least Square Regression to investigate the magnitude and nature of the relationship between customer satisfaction and revenue using customer satisfaction as the independent variable and revenue as the response variable. Cronbach’s alpha was also used for internal scale validity. The results of the research indicated no statistically significant relationship between a customer’s satisfaction with the performance of their TB and either the credit, overdraft or total revenue generated from such a customer through their account. By highlighting this, these findings, nevertheless, contribute to the growing body of knowledge examining the impact of customer satisfaction efforts on revenue. On the basis of the findings of this study, it cannot be practically recommended that customer satisfaction efforts be terminated or changed within the organization of study owing to several study limitations which were present. Firstly, the study was hampered by small sample sizes due to a lack of the availability of revenue data in some instances, particularly in the case of overdraft revenue. Secondly, the study only focused on a single bank account held with the bank and increases and decreases in revenue based on the balances held within that single account. Since one of the purported consequences of improved customer satisfaction is the purchase of additional products, the current design of the study does not take into account the take up of additional accounts or banking products with the bank. Thus, an increase in revenue for the bank as a whole due to the purchase of additional accounts may be masked. Similarly, the scope of the study does not extend to examining the effect of recommendations made by these corporate customers to others and hence growth of divisional or bank revenue due to the addition of new customers. Finally, this quantitative study does not examine revenue growth when compared to customer satisfaction improvements over time due to a limited sample of customers taking part in the study over a number of periods as well as incomplete revenue data. The recommendations for future research are to examine the relationship between changes in customer satisfaction and changes in revenue at divisional level in the long run within the South African banking industry as the impact of an increase in customer satisfaction may be obscured by salient factors in the short run. It is also suggested that future research look at the correlation between dissatisfaction and revenue, where adequate sample sizes are available. Theoretically, the results of this research do bring into serious question the universal application, especially in the context of the South African banking industry of the Service Profit Chain and Satisfaction Profit Chain which propagate the existence of a positive relationship between customer satisfaction and revenue.

The specific objectives are to assess the sustainability of urban agriculture as an employment alternative for the youth in Kinshasa, to examine the extent of government support for the sector and evaluate the role urban agriculture plays in poverty reduction in the identified households. This study adopted a qualitative approach because of its strengths which facilitated a better understanding of the different data the study gathered. Indeed, by use of words such as why, when, how, and what, the study was able to explain many aspects that are not known on urban agriculture in Kinshasa. The quantitative approach has been used to present some results in the form of figures and graphs It was noted that income from urban agriculture is mainly used for needs such as: school fees (25percent), food (53percent), clothing (15percent), and health (7percent). Despite the fact that it does not satisfy all the needs of the workers, results from the study indicate that urban agriculture is making a contribution in the socio-economic development of Kisenso. It clearly appears that if the urban agriculture is funded and professionalised, it can significantly contribute towards creating jobs in Kinshasa. This study was focused only in Kisenso, meaning that more research should be conducted on the entire city of Kinshasa so that conclusions can be generalised on employment and poverty reduction. It will be interesting for the government to fund urban agriculture activity and make it profitable to the workers and the entire population of Kinshasa.

- Description: While the field of career psychology has shifted its attention to the study of career development, the developmental stage of childhood has often been neglected. Similarly, there is an absence of career research of a longitudinal nature, despite consistent calls to focus more on longitudinal methods when studying career development. The present study forms part of an existing longitudinal project which investigates the career development of South African children. This study, initiated in 1998, attempts to explore the occupational aspirations and gender stereotypes of a group of 39 children in the Nelson Mandela Metropole. The results from this study will provide much needed baseline information on how South African children become aware of careers, as well as provide useful suggestions on how to develop career education syllabi, particularly within the Life Orientation curriculum. The present study aims to explore and describe the changes that may occur in the participants’ occupational aspiration interest typology, status levels, and gender stereotypes over a five year period. Both developmental and career developmental theories were used to provide a theoretical context from which the participants’ career development could be explored. The study is quantitative in nature as it made use of semi-structured interviews and a biographical questionnaire in order to quantitatively transcribe the data. The questionnaire consisted of four broad questions which asked for information regarding the participants’ occupational aspirations, how much information the participants had about the chosen occupation, the number of occupations the participants knew about, and the extent to which the participants held gender stereotypes regarding fourteen different occupations. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the findings of the data which had been coded according to Holland’s typology of occupations. In addition, content analysis was performed to elicit themes regarding the participants’ own reflections on their career development. Results from the data analysis revealed that the majority of participants aspired to Social type occupations throughout the five years under study. Furthermore, most participants consistently aspired to high status occupations throughout the five years. Similar results were found for girls and boys. The results also demonstrated that the participants’ gender stereotypes tended to decrease over time, particularly as their occupational information increased. Lastly, most children were able to reflect on their career development and attributed changes in their occupational aspirations to changes in their interests. The results from this study offer insight into the development of occupational aspirations and perceptions of South African children which can be used as a foundation for future research and which should be valuable in the development of relevant career education programmes for South African schools.

Perceptions and livelihood uses of an invasive alien tree (acacia dealbata) by rural communities in the Eastern Cape

Due to ecological impacts that may be associated with Acacia dealbata invasions the Agricultural Research Council Plant Protection Institute is considering releasing a biocontrol agent for A. dealbata. The actual social impacts of A. dealbata invasion and control are likely to be related to its importance in rural livelihoods. This thesis reports on the perceptions and livelihood uses of A. dealbata in the Eastern Cape. Three study sites were assessed, Matatiele, Mount Fletcher and Maclear. The study involved 150 household surveys, one focus group discussion and one transect walk at each site, key informant interviews and frequent house visits to acquire reliable data. Results show that 100 % of households in the three sites use Silver Wattle extensively for firewood. In Matatiele 64 %, 72 % in Mount Fletcher and 84 % of households in Maclear use Silver Wattle for fencing. To carve tools 76 % in Matatiele, 76 % in Mount Fletcher and 84 % households in Maclear use Silver Wattle. For medicinal purposes 18 % in Matatiele, 20 % in Mount Fletcher and 16 % in Maclear use Silver Wattle, whilst 78 % in Matatiele, 80 % in Mount Fletcher and 80 % in Maclear use it for fodder purposes. Many respondents felt that Silver Wattle is too abundant within their areas such that it now has many negative impacts associated with it. Perceptions of local people towards A. dealbata are neither static nor uniform, but are influenced by time since the invasion and now abundance of the species. There are no alternatives which provide the same services provided by Silver Wattle. Benefits and constraints due to A. dealbata invasion are experienced by everyone irrespective of wealth and gender. In conclusion, Silver Wattle is a valuable resource to these rural communities, but increasing abundance is incurring high costs to grazing resources and landscape accessibility.

The study involved 150 household surveys, one focus group discussion and one transect walk at each site, key informant interviews and frequent house visits to acquire reliable data. Results show that 100 % of households in the three sites use Silver Wattle extensively for firewood. In Matatiele 64 %, 72 % in Mount Fletcher and 84 % of households in Maclear use Silver Wattle for fencing. To carve tools 76 % in Matatiele, 76 % in Mount Fletcher and 84 % households in Maclear use Silver Wattle. For medicinal purposes 18 % in Matatiele, 20 % in Mount Fletcher and 16 % in Maclear use Silver Wattle, whilst 78 % in Matatiele, 80 % in Mount Fletcher and 80 % in Maclear use it for fodder purposes. Many respondents felt that Silver Wattle is too abundant within their areas such that it now has many negative impacts associated with it. Perceptions of local people towards A. dealbata are neither static nor uniform, but are influenced by time since the invasion and now abundance of the species. There are no alternatives which provide the same services provided by Silver Wattle. Benefits and constraints due to A. dealbata invasion are experienced by everyone irrespective of wealth and gender. In conclusion, Silver Wattle is a valuable resource to these rural communities, but increasing abundance is incurring high costs to grazing resources and landscape accessibility.

My absorption with finding a creative ‘voice’, my concerns with the environment and a questioning of what post-apartheid poetry should write about all seem a bit Quixotic, especially to me!
