Cognitive restructuring through guided imagery : lessons from Gestalt therapy

- Description: [Summary] In this chapter, a guided imagery method used in gestalt therapy was described in detail and analyzed into its specific components. The basic principles underlying the imagery work were shown to be analogous to those upon which standard cognitive therapy is founded, and this was illustrated by means of case examples, first from one of Perls' dreamwork seminars and then from the author's case files. It was shown how the method could be used to elicit the idiosyncratic meanings of the client in relation to a specific theme and to identify core dysfunctional assumptions. Illustrations were given of specific techniques that could be employed to challenge and restructure these cognitions. The benefits of the imagery modality are that it provides: (1) access to cognitions underlying emotional responses that may be difficult to identify through questioning, (2) a holistic presentation of networks of beliefs, and (3) a means of keeping the client in contact with avoided painful affect. Once a good conceptualization of the client's problem has been achieved, guided imagery provides a modality within which specific strategies for cognitive restructuring can be facilitated through guided discovery. Therapists who are willing to explore this modality and find an aptitude for it will be gaining access to something that will greatly enrich their potential for helping and can provide exciting avenues for developing their own creativity in the challenging work of enabling clients to identify and free themselves from dysfunctional personal meaning systems.

Implementing innovative assessment methods in undergraduate Mathematics

- Description: The following challenges associated with teaching undergraduate Mathematics will be discussed: Negative attitudes of students to Mathematics, Student’s reluctance to practise Mathematics, and surface learning. Some (or all) of the ways in which assessment can be used to address these challenges will be discussed. If used strategically assessment methods/tasks can enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics. Some of the unique challenges that we as lecturers face in teaching mathematics can be remedied by selecting appropriate assessment techniques/tasks. Using the tutorial time fruitfully is one of the challenging aspects in teaching mathematics. Not taking tutorials and other formative assessments seriously is not an uncommon student attitude in higher education contexts. Students who are pressured for time often do not see the immediate value of formative assessment or of discussion as a useful learning activity. A collection of case studies which clearly document what has been tried in different contexts is very useful in mathematics as this information is limited in the South African higher education sector. An innovative assessment method (peer-assessment) which was introduced for a Linear Algebra second year course at Rhodes University (South Africa) will be presented: The implementation method, purpose of introducing the assessment method, its advantages, and disadvantages will be examined. A reflection on the assessment method and concluding remarks will be provided.

- Description: This paper seeks to analyse the policy position of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) to that of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in relation to the green economy and green jobs. It is argued that the ITUC position is consistent with the paradigm of the UNEP that the source of the ecological and jobs crisis lays within the problem of a lack of investment in appropriate alternative technologies and not that of capital accumulation and the nature of material production itself. It is further argued that both the ITUC and the UNEP’s paradigm is flawed on the basis of an assumption that technological efficiencies based upon alternative technologies will reduce the carbon footprint of countries. On the contrary this paper argues that the ITUC and UNEP failed to locate their perspective on a historical understanding of the contradiction of technological efficiencies as part of capital accumulation itself and the continuous expansion of production and secondly, that alternative energy production is still reliant of fossil fuels which will not lead to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Finally, this paper argues that the ITUC does not have an alternative position as the notion of the ‘Just Transition’ is trapped within the existing social democratic, sustainable development paradigm which is committed to a system of capitalist growth. The paper argues that the only viable alternative is for labour to develop and struggle for an alternative eco-socialist society.
