- Description: Online version of original print edition of the Special Publication of the J.L.B. Smith Institute of Ichthyology; No. 46 , The Indian Ocean angelfish from southern Africa heretofore identified as Pomacanthus striatus (Riippell, 1836) is Pomacanthus rhomboides (Gilchrist and Thompson, 1908). P. striatus is shown to be the young of P. maculosus (Forsskål, 1775) which is not known from South Africa; it occurs in the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and along the East African coast to at least 13°S. Holacanthus coeruleus Cuvier, described from a juvenile specimen from the Red Sea, is a junior synonym of Pomacanthus asfur (Forsskål), not P. semicirculatus (Cuvier), thus casting doubt on the record of the letter from the Red Sea.

- Description: Zinc monocarboxyphenoxy and tetracarboxyphenoxy phthalocyanines were covalently linked with three different sizes of glutathione capped core/shell/shell {CdTe/CdS/ZnS(4.2), CdTe/CdS/ZnS(5.1) and CdTe/CdS/ZnS(6.7)}; a core shell {CdTe/CdS(3.1)} and core {CdTe(2.4)} quantum dots. The physicochemical behavior and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) processes of the nanohybrids were investigated. The highest FRET efficiency was observed with CdTe/CdS/ZnS(6.7) nanohybrids with 98% and the least efficiency was observed with CdTe(2.4) nanohybrids with 85%. The CdTe/CdS/ZnS(6.7) also showed the best physicochemical behavior. These good physicochemical properties make the synthesized nanohybrids viable photosensitizers. , Original publication is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.poly.2014.10.024

- Description: The 2010 World Cup is upon us, an event of great socio economic import to South Africa and indeed the African Continent. Not only is South Africa on the pedestal, but so is the African Continent. It is all systems go, so says major role players involved in delivering the 2010 FIFA World Cup to the World. However, we wonder if the same holds true for labour, that we can say it is all systems go, when, on the eve of the infrastructure roll out, we are grappling with issues of how we can stake a claim on behalf of the millions of construction workers that we represent.

- Description: As per our Congress Resolution on Women Empowerment, the main objective for this year (1998) was to implement some of these resolutions. It is obvious that not all the resolutions could be realized this year, however, this department managed to execute the following as per our year plan: mechanisms to empower women in the union, develop education and training programmes on women’s needs, encourage male comrades to take part in gender activities/programmes to raise understanding of gender issues. The above issues were going to be actualized in the following way: national gender schools and gender workshops.

The influence of radiation-induced defects on thermoluminescence and optically stimulated luminescence of α-Al2O3: C

- Description: It is known that when α-Al2O3:C is exposed to excessive amounts of ionising radiation, defects are induced within its matrix. We report the influence of radiation-induced defects on the thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) measured from α-Al2O3:C after irradiation to 1000 Gy. These radiation-induced defects are thermally unstable in the region 450–650 °C and result in TL peaks in this range when the TL is measured at 1 °C/s. Heating a sample to 700 °C obliterates the radiation-induced defects, that is, the TL peaks corresponding to the radiation induced defects are no longer observed in the subsequent TL measurements when moderate irradiation doses below 10 Gy are used. The charge traps associated with these radiation-induced defects are more stable than the dosimetric trap when the sample is exposed to either sunlight or 470-nm blue light from LEDs. TL glow curves measured following the defect-inducing irradiation produce a dosimetric peak that is broader and positioned at a higher temperature than observed in glow curves obtained before the heavy irradiation. In addition, sample sensitization/desensitization occurs due to the presence of these radiation-induced defects. Furthermore, both the activation energy and the kinetic order of the dosimetric peak evaluated when the radiation-induced defects are present in the sample are significantly lower in value than those obtained when these defects are absent. The radiation-induced defects also affect the shape and total light sum of the OSL signal as well as the position and width of the resultant residual phototransferred thermoluminescence main peak.

- Description: Dental development and eruption sequences have prevailed as the gold standard in age estimations of previously unidentified immature individuals within a legal context. However, in the absence of the dentition, skeletal assessments have served as a frequently applied alternative. While various cranial and postcranial skeletal elements have been used in estimating age of the immature skeleton, little is known about the anthropometric value of the pars basilaris, pars lateralis and femur as skeletal age estimation tools. Thus, this study aimed to assess if these bones of the immature human skeleton were useful elements in estimating the age of prenatal and postnatal individuals. These bones were excised from the remains of 74 unclaimed human immature individuals and evaluated using traditional anthropometric methods. The study sample was sourced from the Johannesburg Forensic Pathology Services (JFPS) and the Johannesburg Forensic Paediatric Collection (JFPC), University of the Witwatersrand and subdivided into an early prenatal (younger than 30 gestational weeks); late prenatal (30 to 40 gestational weeks) and postnatal (birth to 7.5 months) age ranges.

- Description: The large terrestrial orchid genus Satyrium underwent evolutionary radiations in the Cape floral region and the grasslands of southern and eastern Africa. These radiations were accompanied by tremendous diversification of the unusual twin-spurred flowers that characterize the genus, but pollination data required to interpret these patterns of floral evolution have been lacking for grassland species in the genus. Here we document pollinators, nectar properties, and levels of pollination success for 11 grassland Satyrium species in southern and south-central Africa. Pollinators of these species include bees, beetles, butterflies, hawkmoths, noctuid moths, long-proboscid flies, and sunbirds. Most species appear to be specialized for pollination by one functional pollinator group. Long-proboscid fly pollination systems are reported for the first time in Satyrium (in S. macrophyllum and a high-altitude form of S. neglectum). Floral morphology, especially spur length and rostellum structure, differs markedly among plants with different pollinators, while nectar volume, concentration, and sugar composition are fairly uniform across species. Most taxa exhibited high levels of pollination success (>50% of flowers pollinated), a trend that can be attributed to the presence of nectar in the twin spurs.

The union movement and South Africa's transition, 1994 - 2003

- Description: The new government faced enormous challenges when it came into office in 1994. For starters, the outgoing Apartheid leaders had thoroughly plundered the state coffers, awarding themselves and white civil servants massive pensions and 'golden handshakes'. The budget deficit was almost 9% of GDP The country/ had barely three weeks foreign exchange reserves, with a balance of payments crisis looming. The majority of inherited civil servants were generally hostile to the new government. The 'deep structures' of the State — by which I mean the ingrained habits and behaviour — were also generally hostile to the objectives of the democratic State. In addition, poverty levels were very high, and income inequality was among the worst in the world. And, of course, South Africa had the most institutionalised forms of racism in the world, which permeated through every law' and practice.

COSATU: Socio-economic Programme

- Language: English

- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/68993 , vital:29347
- Description: There is now wide agreement that Cosatu should formulate a socio-economic programme to co-ordinate its present campaigns and collective bargaining and to influence the structure of the future economy. Our success in a Living Wage Campaign depends on the restructuring of the economy so that it can meet the needs and aspirations of the majority of our people. A Living Wage depends on us developing a productive economy, a fair and equitable distribution of wealth and income, and a democratic State within which the working class can effectively exercise its political power.

Nuruddin Farah: variations on the theme of return
- Authors: Naicker, Kamil
- Date: 2020
- Language: English
- Type: text , article
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/149643 , vital:38871 , https://www.ajol.info/index.php/tvl/article/view/196356
- Description: This article explores the role of the returnee protagonist in selected works of Nuruddin Farah. Nadine Gordimer described Farah as “one of the real interpreters” of Africa and this article argues that Farah’s returnees operate as interpreters themselves, their liminality working to mediate between international readers and “local” subject matter. However, it also observes that Farah, who spent decades in exile, is often as preoccupied with writing non-belonging as he is with rendering Somalia itself. Farah’s returnee narratives are, broadly, novels of redress, in which characters enact their return in an attempt to seek out the missing, rebuild the lost or reclaim the stolen, with imperfect results. In exploring these variations on homecoming, the paper investigates the ways in which Farah’s body of work reflects shifts in identity politics over time, and the unique pressures these shifts exert on the homecoming arc.
