Sur la base de ce travail. on a pratique des applications repetees de dermocortico'ides commercialises au Royaume- Uni. en utilisant Ie test du blanchiment de la peau sans occlusion, de maniere a reproduire au plus pres la situation realisee en clinique (3). Ce travail a montre que I'application de cortico'ides trois fois par jour pendant cinq jours aboutissait a une tachyphylaxie considerable de la reponse du blanchiment quelque soit I'activite therapeutique de la formule utilisee. Au bout de deux jours de repos, on a assiste a une recuperation considerable, mais a nouveau une tachyphylaxie aigue s'est installee a la suite d'une nouvelle application triquotidienne.

Description: We discuss corrections to the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density η/s in higher-derivative gravity theories. Generically, these theories contain ghost modes with Planck-scale masses. Motivated by general considerations about unitarity, we propose new boundary conditions for the equations of motion of the graviton perturbations that force the amplitude of the ghosts modes to vanish. We analyze explicitly four-derivative perturbative corrections to Einstein gravity which generically lead to four-derivative equations of motion, compare our choice of boundary conditions to previous proposals and show that, with our new prescription, the ratio η/s remains at the Einstein-gravity value of 1/4π to leading order in the corrections. It is argued that, when the new boundary conditions are imposed on six and higher-derivative equations of motion, η/s can only increase from the Einstein-gravity value. We also recall some general arguments that support the validity of our results to all orders in the strength of the corrections to Einstein gravity. We then discuss the particular case of Gauss-Bonnet gravity, for which the equations of motion are only of two-derivative order and the value of η/s can decrease below 1/4π when treated in a nonperturbative way. Our findings provide further evidence for the validity of the KSS bound for theories that can be viewed as perturbative corrections to Einstein gravity.

Description: Tebello Nyokong speaks to Robert Berold and Janice Limson about her career as a chemist. Tebello Nyokong, who holds a research chair in medicinal chemistry and nanotechnology at Rhodes University, has become the first South African scientist to win the L’Oreal-UNESCO award for women in science, in the physical sciences. Only one laureate is selected from each of five world regions, and Nyokong is the 2009 laureate for Africa and the Arab states. She and the winners from the other four regions travel to Paris in March to each accept the award and a generous prize of close to R1 million. Nyokong now heads the new Nanotechnology Innovation Centre for medical sensors: the biggest single research investment in the history of Rhodes. Linked to other nanotechnology centres in the country, it is designed to bridge the gap between research and the market.

Description: Background. A service-learning (SL) elective offered to final-year pharmacy students was introduced in 2007. The elective demonstrated a holistic approach to creating opportunities for future pharmacists to understand the current needs and future challenges of the burden of disease in developing countries such as South Africa and to foresee their key roles in health promotion. Methods. The 2007 Sasol National Festival of Science and Technology (SciFest) was chosen as the ideal platform to implement this elective. Evaluation of the elective was carried out in association with the Academic Development Centre using a web-based software tool known as the ADC evaluation assistant (ADCEA). The ADCEA consisted of a ‘question bank’ from which the course facilitators selected nine ranked closed questions as well as two open-ended questions. Results. SciFest participation, in the course of the service-learning elective, was acknowledged by students to have prepared them as responsible citizens to undertake health promotion in the public sector healthcare system. Conclusion. Students’ experiences of the learning opportunities provided in the SciFest elective highlight the strengths of this SL programme.

Description: A fine time-scale study was undertaken on the effects of wave exposure, tidal height and substratum type on mussel recruit densities on the south coast of South Africa. Prior to sampling, an exposed and a sheltered shore were identified at each of 2 sites (Diaz Cross and High Rocks) 7 km apart. Each shore was divided into 3 shore levels (termed zones) within which 3 substrata (adult mussels, coralline and non-coralline macroalgae) were sampled. Destructive sampling of early (<1 mm) and late (1 to 5 mm) plantigrades was performed daily over 30 d during a period of comparatively high recruitment. Recruitment was synchronised among substrata within zones, but not among zones or between sites. This suggests that larvae will settle on all substrata within a zone, but will prefer some substrata over others. They will not, however, search among zones for favoured substrata. Densities of early (but not late) plantigrades were consistently greater at Diaz Cross than High Rocks, indicating important differences in post-settlement mortality between sites. At both sites, densities of both recruit classes were greater on the low and mid shore than on the high shore. Generally (18 out of 20 comparisons), plantigrade densities within each zone were greater on algae than on adult mussels. Approximately 45% of all recruits collected were found on the foliose coralline alga Corallina, 37% on adult mussels and 18% on the rhodophyte Gelidium pristoides. Without secondary relocation from macroalgae to adult mussel beds, juveniles recruiting onto algae are likely to be lost. On low shore algae, densities of both early and late plantigrades were greater for exposed shores. Densities of plantigrades on the mussel bed and on algae on the mid and high shore were not correlated with exposure. Thus, site, substratum and zone all had significant and interacting effects on the density of recruits on both exposed and sheltered shores. The effect of wave exposure on recruitment, at least on the low shore, suggests that spatial subsidies not only in the form of food supply, but also in the form of larval transport, have a role in structuring mussel populations.

Description: Retraction Watch maintains a "running list" of retracted papers on Covid-19 related research. By the end of September 2020, thirty-three retracted Covid-19 papers were listed. We analysed these retracted papers, focusing specifically on how they have been cited by review papers, and subsequently how they have penetrated and potentially distorted public discourse and legitimate research on Covid-19. The study demonstrates the need for more in-depth studies that focus on the phenomenon of citation pollution. We show that the "Covid-19 publication race", amplified by a pressure-to-publish research culture, distorted published science on Covid-19. We highlight the urgency to engage popular media and critical decision makers on how to distinguish between questionable and legitimate science. We also emphasise the importance of dealing with illegitimate research in a timely manner, both from a scholarly communications and research quality perspective. , Retraction Watch maintient une "liste courante" des articles rétractés sur les recherches liées au Covid-19. Fin septembre 2020, trente-trois articles rétractés sur le Covid-19 étaient répertoriés. Nous avons analysé ces articles rétractés, en nous concentrant spécifiquement sur la façon dont ils ont été cités par d'autres articles, et ensuite sur la façon dont ils ont pénétré et potentiellement faussé le discours public et la recherche légitime sur le Covid-19. L'étude démontre le besoin d'études plus approfondies qui se concentrent sur le phénomène de la pollution des citations. Nous montrons que la "course à la publication sur le Covid-19", amplifiée par une culture de la pression à la publication de la recherche, a déformé l'information scientifique publiée sur le Covid-19. Nous soulignons l'urgence d'engager les médias populaires et les décideurs critiques sur la manière de distinguer la science douteuse de la science légitime. Eind september 2020 waren drieëndertig ingetrokken Covid-19 papieren op de lijst geplaatst. We hebben deze ingetrokken papieren geanalyseerd, waarbij we ons specifiek hebben gericht op de manier waarop ze zijn geciteerd door review papers, en vervolgens op de manier waarop ze zijn doorgedrongen en mogelijk vervormd in het publieke discours en het legitieme onderzoek naar Covid-19. De studie toont aan dat er behoefte is aan meer diepgaande studies die zich richten op het fenomeen van de citatievervuiling. We tonen aan dat de "Covid-19-publicatierace", versterkt door een druk om te publiceren onderzoekscultuur, de gepubliceerde wetenschap over Covid-19 vertekend heeft. Description: Repositories remain an innovative but marginalized technology largely because there is no consensus about an agreed set of Performance Indicators (PIs) that demonstrate their overall impact on the research enterprise of our universities. A successful Institutional Repository should be evaluated in terms of the extent to which the open access repository builds a critical mass of scholarly content which is sustained and available through active university community engagement and ongoing scholarly contributions (faculty, researchers & students) that, when managed efficiently and effectively, ultimately strengthen, promote and give visibility to the research enterprise of the institution, and bring benefit to broader society. However, librarians are grappling with what and how best to demonstrate ‘institutional good’ but without clear evidence, assessment is fed by perception based on limited information which leads to diminished impact and value of the facility, a tyranny described as being caught between a rock and a hard place. Using Illuminative Evaluation to design a series of quantitative and qualitative metrics, it is proposed that a distinction be made between significant and secondary Performance Indicators where the former gather evidence to demonstrate the overall effect or impact of the IR on the individual and collective research community.

Description: Recruitment and population structure of Perna perna in low shore mussel beds were investigated over 15 months at six sites along the south coast of South Africa. Initial, subjective classification of sites as wave exposed or wave sheltered (three of each) was confirmed using the dissolution of cement blocks to measure average water flux and dynamometers for maximum wave force. Recruitment occurred throughout the year, but recruit (1–5 mm) densities were significantly higher from January to April 1996 on both shore types. Recruit densities were positively correlated with adult (>15 mm) densities for both shore types (P < 0.05) but the correlations were extremely weak (r 2 < 0.06 in each case). In areas with 100% cover, adult size (mean and maximum lengths) was greater on exposed sites, but density showed the reverse and was negatively correlated with maximum wave strength (r = −0.84). Despite differences in adult densities and sizes, biomass, which is a product of the two, showed no significant difference between the two shore types (ANOVA P > 0.05). Thus wave exposure dramatically affects density, recruitment and mussel size, but not recruitment timing or biomass where there is 100% cover, and mediates a three-way interaction among food supply, larval supply and intraspecific competition for space. In contrast to shores with saturation recruitment, mussel biomass here appears to be limited by recruit supply and constraints of food, especially on sheltered shores, while density is regulated through intraspecific competition for space primarily on exposed shores and at small spatial scales.
