Disaster recovery planning for the City of Johannesburg is crucial and urgent, as it will ensure that the organisation is able to recover the core business functionality of its software, data, and systems after the occurrence of a natural or man-made disaster. Municipalities should have adequate recovery strategies in place in case of disasters. Planning for recovery from a disaster is quickly becoming recognized as a necessity, however organisational leaders are not putting recovery strategies as a priority and thus result in challenges when implementing the recovery processes i.e. Lack of resources, overlooking risk management, lack of leadership commitment to continuity processes and lack of understanding the concept of DRP and BCP. Disruption can happen when not anticipated, It is impossible to foresee what may hit an organisation. It is thus necessary and compulsory for organisation to plan for disasters most especially with ever-increasing dependence of business processes on technology services. The purpose of this research was to assess the adequacy of the Disaster recovery plan at the City of Johannesburg (Road sector) and to develop a strategy to effectively manage the DRP. The research revealed that the DRP at the City of Johannesburg (Road sector) is not comprehensive and that there are other processes that are not effectively implemented. There is a lack of resources for implementing the DRP. The dedicated staff is not adequately technically skilled to implement the disaster recovery processes. This study has revealed that the challenges noted were common to other institutions. An adequate DRP is crucial; capacity management and seamless procurement processes are also crucial for the success of the disaster recovery processes. Theoretically, this research adds to the literature on disaster recovery management and highlights the challenges and complexities involved. Practically, the research provides several lessons and guiding principles that the organisation may consider around disaster recovery management.

- Description: The study focused on work-family conflict among females occupying lower level jobs. A quantitative research methodology was conducted on a sample of (N=144) females working on the assembly line in two private sector organisations. The research instrument was a questionnaire comprising six parts. The variables were measured under four categories: work-family conflict, job demands, perceived organisational support and job self-efficacy. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse and interpret the data. A comparative study was done between Hesto and Alpha pharmaceutical employees and it was found that Hesto employees experience greater work-family conflict, job demands, perceived organisational support and job self-efficacy. The correlation results of the study showed that a significant negative relationship exists between perceived organisation support and work-family conflict. There was a weak positive relationship between perceived organisational support and job self-efficacy. Work demands was found to be positively and significantly related to work-family conflict. There was a significant negative relationship between perceived organisational support and work demand. A significant negative relationship was found between job self-efficacy and work-family conflict. Based on these results recommendations were made on how South African companies can help reduce work-family conflict.

South Africa forms part of the global market and is not immune towards the stipulated growth strategies. It is believed that South Africa has one of the highest unemployment rate internationally (Human Capital Mangement, 2005). There are various reasons that have contributed towards this perception; factors such as structural changes in the labour market have been highlighted as one of the factors that have contributed to the high unemployment rate (HCM, 2005). It is further said that when mergers and acquisitions occurs, structural changes are bound to occur (Greeve, 2008). Despite the constant merger activities that are occurring in various industries, research has shown that most mergers add no value or reduce shareholders value for the acquiring firm (Kusewitt, 2007). The primary objective of this research is to investigate how organisational behaviour is influenced in an acquired firm.There seems to be high level of uncertainity, trust and communication breakdown amoung employees of Kansai Plascon. This research will investigate whether this perception is related to the acquisition transaction that has occurred. The study will collect its primary data using a set of questionnaires that will be distributed to the employees of Kansai Plascon. The data will be analysed and interpreted.

- Description: Parental conflict profoundly affects many children globally and in South Africa. In recent times, both the undeveloped and developed countries have witnessed high levels of divorce cases with a resultant negative effect on the children. Poor communication escalates conflict, thereby affecting the decision making of the parents. The ongoing parental conflict commences before the divorce and it is likely to intensify after divorce if not properly managed or resolved. Private family mediators help the parents to regain trust to enable communication regarding contact and care of their children. Therefore, it is imperative to understand how conflict intensifies in order to manage it effectively as conflict introduces change. Despite, the importance of this type of research, there is still an existence of a gap in the literature concerning the need to inform social workers to consider family mediation as an area of specialisation. This will assist in resolving parental disputes during divorce and ensuring the welfare of the children. This study is going to fill the existing knowledge gap by exploring how family mediators influence divorcing parents to renegotiate on the new roles. In this qualitative study, private family mediators in Port Elizabeth were interviewed, on how they assist divorcing parents to communicate on the care and contact of their children. Purposive sampling and snowball sampling were used to select the participants. Face-to-face unstructured interviews were used to gather thick and rich data which was then thematically analysed. The findings revealed that family mediators helped parents improve parent-child relationships and reduce their parental conflicts. In addition, during orientation the mediators informed divorcing parents about litigation, so that the parents are aware of what to expect in the event of failure to reach a settlement in mediation. Most of the people are unaware of family mediation, opting for litigation which escalates emotions and family members become frustrated affecting the adaption of children. The findings show that the participants were concerned on the way mediation is conducted in Port Elizabeth, as some law professionals referred divorce cases to unauthentic mediators. The lawyers tend to intensify the emotional state of the divorcing parties which escalate conflict resulting in re-litigation. The family mediators reiterated that there is “professional jealous” from the lawyers.

An investigation of the effect of co-solvents on the hydrothermal liquefaction of microalgae biomass

- Description: The study introduces and demonstrates the viability of the continuous flow reactor (CFR) system for the production of bio-crude oil (BCO) from wet microalgae. Preliminary experiments conducted in the CFR system in hot compressed water (HCW) were successful in converting wet microalgae into liquid BCO. However, the synthesis and aggregation of high boiling point (HBP) components of BCO and the accumulation of char in the tubular piping of CFR system were identified as the limiting factor to the viability of the system. The aggregation of HBP components and the accumulation of char result to system blockage which prevents the continuous flow of the liquefaction product mixture in the CFR system. Inhibiting the reactions leading to the formation of HBP components and char will improve the performance of the CFR system. Therefore, the study seeks to incorporate co-solvents in the liquefaction reaction media in an attempt to inhibit or minimize the prevalence of HBP components of BCO. As such, different co-solvents were screened for their influence on improving the quality of BCO with respect to its boiling point profile (BPP), initial and final boiling point, as well as the amount of char recovered from each experiment. Only one co-solvent was chosen for further exploration in the CFR system. Batch liquefaction reactor’s (BLR) made up of stainless steel were used to carry out the co-solvent screening experiments. These experiments were carried out at a constant temperature (280 °C), pressure (75 bar), and co-solvent concentration (10 wt.%), at varying residence times. Solvent extraction with dichloromethane (DCM) was performed on the liquefaction product mixture to separate the products, viz. BCO, char and water soluble components. The extracted BCO was analysed through simulated distillation (SimDis) to obtain the BPP. The BPP properties of the BCO samples, from different liquefaction media, and the amount of char recovered were highly influenced by the addition of a co-solvent. The final boiling point (FBP) of tetralin, heptane, and n-octanol BCO products were significantly reduced to below 500 °C for all tested residence times except at 20 minutes. The residence time also proved to be influential in the processing of wet microalgae. n-Octanol was selected as the optimal performing co-solvent and was used for the continuous liquefaction of wet microalgae in the CFR system. The CFR system was modified by adding a co-solvent feed line into the continuous system since n-octanol was insoluble in water. The n-octanol pump was set at different flow rates, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 g/min, which resulted in a concentration of about 10 wt.% in the reactor feed. The concentration of n-octanol had a significant influence on the BPP of BCO components. The FBP’s were reduced with an increase in n-octanol concentration.
