Use of public urban green spaces for spiritual services in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

- Description: Urban green spaces provide an array of ecosystem services. Spiritual services provided by urban green spaces are widely used, but are often overlooked and rarely quantified. These services are accessed at sites of specific religious or sacred significance or more general urban green spaces used for religious practices that require natural or semi-natural, outdoor settings. We sampled twelve public green spaces in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, to determine their use as sites for religious gatherings, interviewed visitors to green spaces and religious congregants about such and used the travel cost method to assign a value to the green spaces for spiritual benefits. Religious gatherings were observed in all twelve sampled green spaces, and 7% of a random sample of visitors to the urban green spaces said that they participated in such. Amongst the worshippers, 71% said worshipping outdoors was part of their religious practices and 29% said they did so because they had no building in which to worship. Most (79%) worshipped in public green spaces 1–4 times per week. Many felt that it would be easier if the city council designated specific and quiet areas in public green spaces for their religious observances, which they could then help maintain. The mean value of spiritual services was determined to be US$93 ± 79 /ha/yr, and tended to be highest in the high density, poorer suburbs. These results reveal the significance of urban green spaces for spiritual purposes and indicate the need for greater recognition amongst researchers and city planners and authorities to secure and maintain such benefit flows.

Here we review the literature on the role of invasive species in livelihoods to assess what is known, identify knowledge gaps and provide recommendations for future research. Literature was collected using key word searches and included both journal publications and grey literature. Slightly less than half (48%) of species studied had both substantial positive and negative impacts on local livelihoods (e.g. Australian Acacia spp. species; Camelus dromedaries; Lantana camara; Prosopis spp.), with 37% inducing mainly costs (Chromolaena odorata; Lissachatina fulica; Opuntia stricta) and 16% producing mainly benefits (Opuntia ficus-indica; Acacia spp.). Some species, such as Acacia dealbata, fell into different categories depending on the social-ecological context. Key benefits or services included the provision of fuelwood, fodder, timber and food products for local households communities and to a lesser extent supporting and regulating services such as soil improvement and shade. A number of species also provided cultural services such as recreation and spiritual values and provided many with an opportunity to earn a cash income. However, invasive species also harm livelihoods and increase vulnerability through encroaching on land and reducing mobility or access. They can also decrease the supply of natural resources used by households and reduce agricultural production (livestock and/or crops) which can result in losses of income and increased vulnerability. Furthermore, some invasive species were seen to have negative implications for human health and safety and reduce the cultural value of landscapes. Economic impacts on livelihoods as a result of invasive species were highly variable and very dependent on the social-ecological contexts. These negative implications can reduce resilience and adaptive capacity of households and communities thus increasing their vulnerability to change. Drawing on case studies we highlight that efforts for managing invasive species need to safeguard livelihood benefits while mitigating negative impacts. In concluding we highlight future research and policy needs on the topic of invasive species, livelihoods and human well-being.

Freshwater flows have supporting, regulating, and cultural elements, leading to complexities in governance as well as place attachment, intellectual, and recreational services. Scale dependence in CES creates trade-offs that challenge the usefulness of the ES framework for PA management. Ecosystem service production can potentially create political support for PAs and helps to build connections and feedbacks that increase PA resilience. Papers in the feature highlight a need to understand trade-offs in optimising for biodiversity vs. particular bundles of ES; impacts of investment in built infrastructure on ES use; how managers facilitate ES; scale and heterogeneity as influences; the role of adaptive monitoring of PAs as social–ecological systems; and services and benefits from PAs that are not well-articulated in ES classifications. PA research can thus add nuance, depth and substance to broader thinking around CES.

The effects of three air CO2 levels (400, 600 and 800 ppm) on five submerged aquatic plants that utilize HCO3− were studied, using the elevated CO2 Open Top Chamber facility at Rhodes University (Grahamstown, South Africa). Plants grew in water with two different initial dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations of 1.5 and 3.0 mM. Overall, the growth rates and biomass allocation to roots were not affected by the initial DIC and air CO2, even though differences between the species were found. Furthermore, no overall effects were found on net photosynthesis, chlorophyll and starch content, even though significant effects of CO2 and DIC were observed in some species. In contrast, with increasing DIC and air CO2 a significant global decline in leaf nitrogen content linked with an increased C:N molar ratio was observed. The results indicate that submerged aquatic HCO3− users will be less affected by atmospheric CO2 increases when growing in DIC rich waters, in comparison to obligate CO2 users growing under CO2 limiting conditions as documented in previous studies. However, the changes found in plant nitrogen illustrate that atmospheric CO2 increases will affect nitrogen absorption by submerged plants, with subsequent ecosystem level effects.

The peptide purification combined size-exclusion and reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography. A thallium-based ion flux assay confirmed the presence of a sodium channel agonist/inhibitor and purity was determined using a modified tricine SDS-PAGE system. The peptide isolated indicated the presence of multiple disulfide bonds in a tight β-defensin cystine conformation. An IC50 value of 26 nM was determined for total channel inhibition on MCF-7 cells. The unique putative sodium channel agonist initiating with a cystine bond indicates a divergent evolution to those previously isolated from Bunodosoma species.

Aim of the study: To determine the in vivo anti-inflammatory and in vitro anti-trypanosomal activities of the extracts of A. vogelii stem bark and identify the phytochemical classes of the fractions responsible for the activities. Materials and methods: The in vivo anti-inflammatory activity of the extracts was evaluated using the egg albumin-induced rat paw oedema model while the in vitro anti-trypanosomal activity was assessed on Trypanosoma brucei brucei. The in vitro cytotoxicity was assessed on HeLa (human cervix adenocarcinoma) cell line. Results: The methanolic extract of A. vogelii stem bark, with 11.2% yield, gave LD50 > 5000 mg/kg. The n-hexane fraction of the extract contains steroids, terpenes and fatty acids and yielded non-cytotoxic terpenoidal column fraction with anti-trypanosomal IC50 of 3.0 μg/mL. The ethylacetate fraction at 100 mg/kg dose significantly (p less than 0.05) provoked 37.8, 62.5 and 69.7% inhibition of oedema induced by egg-albumin at the second, fourth and sixth hours respectively. Conclusion: The study demonstrated that the anti-inflammatory and anti-trypanosomal activities of A. vogelii are probably due to non-cytotoxic terpenoids and validated the traditional use of A. vogelii in the treatment of inflammation and sleeping sickness.

Singlet oxygen is cytotoxic to cancer cells hence it is important for PDT. The in vitro dark toxicity of complex 2 and 2-GSS against MCF–7 cells showed ≥93% viable cells within concentration ranges of 10–160 μg/mL. 2–GSS showed enhanced PDT activity with less than 50% viable cells at 80 μg/mL as compared to 2 and GSS alone which showed > 60% viable cells within 10–160 μg/mL. The observed improvements in the PDT activity of 2-GSS could be attributed to the high singlet oxygen generation of 2-GSS compared to 2 alone in addition to the phototoxicity of GSS.

Photophysical and nonlinear optical characteristics of pyridyl substituted phthalocyanine-detonation nanodiamond conjugated systems in solution

- Description: In this study photophysical, nonlinear absorption and optical limiting properties of detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs)-phthalocyanine nanoconjugate systems containing: 2,9(10),16(17),23(24)-tetrakis-(4-pyridyloxy) phthalocyaninato (H2TPPc), 2,9(10),16(17),23(24)-tetrakis-(4-pyridyloxy) phthalocyanato zinc(II) (ZnTPPc) and 2,9(10),16(17),23(24)-tetrakis-(4-pyridyloxy) phthalocyanato silicon(IV) hydroxide (Si(OH)2TPPc), were investigated in dimethylsulfoxide solution. Pcs were non-covalently linked to nanondiamonds (also covalently linked for Si(OH)2TPPc) and investigated using 532 nm laser excitation at 10 ns pulses for their optical limiting properties. Complexes that have higher triplet state absorption also possessed enhanced nonlinear optical behaviour following reverse saturable absorption mechanism. Superior optical performance is observed when the Pcs had a central metal with axial ligands conjugated to DNDs in solution. Nanoconjugate of DNDs-Si(OH)2TPPc and respective Pc in solution gave the highest imaginary third-order susceptibility (Im[X(3)]) and hyperpolarizability (γ) at 2.91 × 10−8 and 3.17 × 10−8 esu and 3.88 × 10−28 and 4.22 × 10−28 esu, respectively, with Ilim value of 0.47 and 0.39 J·cm−2.

- Description: Two morpholine-substituted Zn(II) phthalocyanines, complex 4 and the cationic 5, were synthesized and conjugated to graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and biotinylated GQDs (GQDs-biotin) by non-covalent π-π interactions. The GQDs-biotin are prepared as potential nanoparticle-based Pc delivery vector combined with a receptor-mediated transport system using biotin. The photo-physicochemical properties of the Pc complexes and their corresponding conjugates were studied. Upon conjugation, the fluorescence quantum yields decrease for 4 and 5, however, the triplet quantum yields were increased for the conjugates. All samples demonstrated singlet oxygen generation. For conjugated complexes, the singlet quantum yields decreased due to the screening effect in some cases. An increase in the photodynamic therapy activities upon quaternization was observed for the conjugates, with the cell viability decreasing from 66.2% to 51.2% after treatment for 4-GQDs and 5-GQDs, respectively. A relatively better performance was also observed for the cationic complex in combination with the biotin functionalized GQDs, 5-GQDs-biotin, where the cell viability was 34.9% after treatment. Moreover, the cellular uptake of 5-GQDs-biotin over 24 h was relatively higher compared to Pc complex alone and other PcsGQDs conjugates.

Fluorescence quantum yields, fluorescence lifetimes, triplet quantum yields, and triplet lifetimes were measured for the complexes, and for their conjugates in DMSO.
