- Description: Water is one of the scarce and constrained natural resource globally, and a necessity to every living creature, organism and the natural environment – it is the existence of life. Water, as an irreplaceable natural resource, plays a vital role in every country's development and prosperity, integrating socio-economic needs of both the present and future generation. Therefore, sustainable strategies and approaches or concepts are significant in ensuring that such a unique resource is preserved and conserved sustainably. Municipal environment or local government sphere creates a pivotal role in governing the use of water, through the provision of legislation, regulations and establishment of water conservation and water demand management strategies and plans. However, it has been established that there is a lack of integrated water resource management approach and planning in municipalities, creating concerns with regards to controlling the overutilisation of water and protection of water sources in general. The aim and goals of the study are to review Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality's (BCMM) water conservation and water demand management (BCMM WC/WDM) development and implementation by, assessing the existing strategy related to water conservation and water demand management; constraints and opportunity identification; and provision of recommendations in improving the practices in the municipality. The study presents core theories and empirical studies relevant to the water conservation and water demand management, and also deals with theoretical framework found under the Natural Resource-Based View and its application to water conservation and water demand management concepts. A qualitative research design approach was used for the research, which is underpinned by a post-positivism paradigm. In terms of data collection, two methods were used in the study: (i) document study and secondary analysis; and (ii) semi-structured interviews with BCMM relevant officials. The study identified gaps and inconsistencies in the development and implementation of BCMM WC/WDM strategy, although the municipality has taken some step towards its implementation. However, the strives taken by BCMM in implementing water conservation and water demand management initiatives are acknowledged. The study provides recommendations related to the findings identified upon the data collection and fieldwork. The recommendation proposed by the study includes proper communicating the BCMM WC/WDM strategy to all relevant stakeholders, focus on reducing the non-revenue water, implementation of various project related to pressure management, encourage culture of using water efficiently through educational and community awareness campaigns, capacitation of BCMM including seeking financial support, continuous review of the strategy and exploring other water supply sources to relax the already constrained existing water sources. The limitations of the study compared to the broader scope of water conservation and water demand management aspects are highlighted and acknowledged. The purpose of the study is to investigate how leadership has shaped the school culture, which culminates to higher academic performance in a secondary school. This case study is done in a previously disadvantaged secondary school within the Buffalo City Metro Education District, in the Eastern Cape. Despite the socio-economic challenges faced by the school, the NSC examination pass rate results for the school are constantly above the Provincial NSC pass rate results. Consequently, the aim of the study is to determine the unique characteristics of the school culture that have contributed to high academic performance, and how the school leadership has cultivated this culture. The study reviews school culture using Schein’s organizational culture model. Moreover, it reviews school principalship, leadership and how leadership shapes school culture. Lastly, the study reviews literature on instructional, transformational and distributed leadership theories, as they resonate well with South African school environment. The study utilizes a qualitative research method in its investigation, gathering data through document analysis and interviews. After the data was collected, the pattern matching method was utilized to analyse the findings. The key characteristics of school culture that contributed to the school performing well academically, are the values of disciplined hard work and academic excellence. Furthermore, findings proved that characteristics of instructional leadership such as the provision of professional development and the management of curriculum and instruction have the shape the school culture. Transformational leadership characteristics such as individualized consideration, inspirational motivation and intellectual stimulation, have also shaped the school culture; as have characteristics of distributed leadership such as sharing authority and accountability. The study discusses the findings and then concludes by recognizing the research limitations such as the time constraints and purposeful exclusion of certain school members, for example learners. In its conclusion the study presents it contributions to the body of knowledge and provides recommendations for practitioners and future studies.

- Description: This research was a Case Study on the role of Flexible Working in achieving a Work – Life Balance, based on the Information Technology Consultants of Kestrel Business Solutions – a company based in London, the United Kingdom. The study set out to determine what aspects of flexible working can reduce work - related stress; home - related stress; improve personal wellbeing; identify the pitfalls of flexible working, and to recommend mitigating actions. The literature review identified five different, but complimentary theories that included: The Spill over Theory; Balanced Theory; Resource Based Theory; Compensation Theory and the Wellness Theory to unpack and explore the concept of Work - Life Balance. The study followed a predominantly qualitative methodology approach and used thematic analysis to identify key ideas from the data. Interviews and questionnaires were used to obtain data from the respondents, in addition to being a data triangulation exercise. From a population of 10 subjects - purposeful sampling was used to select a sample of 10 respondents - made up of 3 males and 7 females. All respondents were employees of Kestrel Business Solutions. 6 respondents were interviewed and given questionnaires to fill out. 6 face to face interviews were conducted, and 6 questionnaires completed until saturation was achieved - indicating a survey response rate of 100%. The results from the data collection generally showed how aspects of flexible working like telecommuting, flexitime and homeworking ultimately helped the employees to achieve a Work-Life Balance - by primarily influencing how they balanced their work, home, and personal commitments. Importantly, the study also identified pitfalls of flexible working; like employees feeling isolated and the pressure to perform. Potential mitigating efforts identified in the study included, providing more company support and education for flexible working initiatives. The study concluded by acknowledging the limitations of the study, which included time constraints and the small population, and sample size of the study. In its conclusion, the study identified recommendations for future studies like: increasing the population and sample size, and devoting more time to the study, for more generalized and conclusive findings.

The instruments used in the study were the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) (Form 5X) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES 9). The MLQ (5X) was completed by the followers and leaders of Sasol Gas to determine whether Sasol Gas leaders use transactional, transformational and/or laissez-faire leadership styles. The work engagement instrument was completed by each follower to determine current levels of employee engagement. Descriptive statistics were obtained and correlations completed for the data to determine whether the different leadership styles exhibit different levels of engagement. The MLQ survey results indicate that leaders of Sasol Gas have more transformational than transactional leadership styles. The UWES 9 measured the three factors of vigour, dedication, and absorption; dedication had the highest mean compared to vigour and absorption, indicating that Sasol Gas employees strongly identify themselves with their work because it is experienced as meaningful, inspiring, and challenging. This research found a statistically significant, albeit weak, relationship between transformational and transactional leadership styles and employee engagement. This is a positive reflection of the current Sasol Gas leaders because empirical evidence shows that transformational leadership behaviours are more successful for attaining and fulfilling goals during organisational change.

The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between South Africa’s top seven bank’s business model description and their financial performance. Research has highlighted that there is a relationship between business models and performance, however, a limited amount of studies have provided empirical evidence to this effect. The study followed a deductive approach by firstly assessing and analysing the components of the banks business model according to the IIRC’s International
Framework, and then comparing the components focus of each bank for every year of this study; followed by an assessment, analyses and evaluation of each banks financial performance using the CAMELS Rating System model. Once these analyses were done for both business model description and financial performance, the study attempted to assess if the banks with the richest business model description yielded the best financial performance. The findings revealed that the banks with the richest business model description were not necessarily the best performing banks, in actual fact, these banks had low ratings for their performance, and the banks with the lowest rating for their business model description had the highest financial performance rating. However, other factors contributed to these ratings, such as some banks had low ratings for their business model description due to their business models not following the Framework. Conversely, for a more detailed and an in depth analysis and to distinguish whether there is a relationship between business model description and financial performance, the study applied correlation coefficient by using the business model description scores and financial performance components scores for each bank for the three years. The results revealed that there was a strong positive correlation between 2017 and 2018, and a weak positive correlation in 2019. This meant that indeed there was a relationship between the business model description and the bank’s financial performance. While the limitations of this study have been acknowledged, the study has contributed to the knowledge of understanding the relationship between business models and financial performance in a South African context. However, further research could be conducted on more banks in order to deduct a broader view on the relationship between business model description and financial performance of South African banks. This study aims to establish the possible relationship between an authentic leader and the impact the leader’s behaviour has on the performance of his or her employee. The study further attempts to establish if satisfaction can play a mediating role in the relationship between authentic leadership and the performance of an employee. The research used two established research instruments, namely the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ), as well as a section of Freese and Schalk’s (2008) psychological contract questionnaire relating to satisfaction specifically. Respondents were also requested to indicate their most recent performance rating. The study was conducted within the financial sector based in the Eastern and Southern Cape with a total population of 1077 employees across all business units, job grades, race, age, education and gender. The study established a significant positive relationship between authentic leadership and employee performance. A further significant positive relationship was established between authentic leadership and satisfaction. Through determining the factors influencing graduates’ employment by employers and also the elements that induce employers in employing graduates, this was achieved. This research is rooted in a positivist perspective determining the relationship between graduate employability and a universities’ status. The main goal of this research was to examine to what extent employers are influenced by a higher education institution's perceived reputation when employing graduates. The linear regression model was used to predict the relationship between graduate employability (dependent variable) and the perceived reputation of the university by employers and citations of the university. This was achieved using quantitative methods. The quantitative database that this research relied on is Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) world university ranking. This research made use of descriptive data analysis as well as linear regression. The data set analysis showed citations of the institution had a significant negative relationship with the rate of employability (although this was a relatively weak relationship). The reputation of the institution and the number of international students enrolled do not affect the rate of employability. The analysed data set also showed that the number of citations of a university had a significant impact on the rate of employability at the 10% significance level. Pearson Correlations quantitative data analysis was adopted to explain the relationship of the independent and dependent variables. Multiple Regression quantitative data analysis was adopted to test the strength of the leadership styles on commitment. Transformational leadership was found to have a significant positive relationship with job satisfaction, while the relationship between transactional leadership and job satisfaction was positive but moderate. A significant negative relationship was found between passive-avoidant leadership and job satisfaction. It is thus the responsibility of the financial institution under investigation to highlight the significant links and benefits of this leadership style to its management to ensure increased job satisfaction and lower turnover of employees in the institution. Literature explored in this study supported the close link between the different leadership styles and job satisfaction.

- Description: This thesis investigates whether there is a relationship between education, economic growth and global competitiveness and whether there is a relationship between South Africa’s current throughput rates in institutions of higher education, and its economic growth and global competitiveness. Economic growth is defined as a country’s ability to improve the life of its average citizen based on the strength of its economy. As such, it is increasingly important for a country to assess the factors that contribute to the improvement of their economy, which will ultimately result in its economic growth. Global competitiveness is an indication of how countries are able to provide for their people internally, as well as participate in the international market. To this end, economic growth and global competitiveness are two proxies that can be used to demonstrate the economic wellbeing of a country. Considering that prosperity under economic growth and global competitiveness of a country are driven by its people, one of the aims of this thesis was to investigate whether there is a relationship between education and economic growth and global competitiveness. Considering the recent demand in free education in South Africa, it is also important to understand whether there is a relationship between South Africa’s current throughput rates at higher education institutions and its economic growth and global competitiveness. Bearing in mind the political past which has led to inequality in the country, it is important to understand which types of education contribute to the economy and which types need to be further supported in order to increase the country’s economic productivity. Therefore, an additional aim of the thesis was to determine the relationship between South Africa’s current throughput rates in institutions of higher education, and its economic growth and global competitiveness. To address the aforementioned aims, data were collected from various open access online repositories. All the data were collated and numerous general linear models were constructed and tested to determine the different relationships as per the two aims. The results reveal that secondary school education had the highest impact on economic growth and global competitiveness on a global scale. This could be attributed to the fact that secondary school graduates tend to make up the largest part of the general workforce and as such, would make up a substantial proportion of the economy. Regarding South Africa, the only significant relationships were between green cluster universities (universities that focus on both research and technical training) and global competitiveness. Overall average throughput rates in all academic institutions were low; this could indicate that perhaps there are issues within the higher education system itself that need to be addressed in order to increase the throughput rate. From a managerial perspective, the results of this research stress the importance for the government to further investigate this area of study, as the call for free education becomes more prominent. The low throughput rates seem to suggest that the government is spending substantial amounts of money on students who do not always complete their studies. More research needs to be done to assess the root of the problem in South Africa’s tertiary education system, in order to ensure that this aspect increases its positive contribution towards the country’s economic growth and global competitiveness.

The context of the creative economy and creative industries provided insight into the experiences of creative cultural labourers in the new economic model. The context emphasised the research problem which considered the difficulties experienced by creative and cultural entrepreneurs and their career paths who, through labour precarity, remain isolated from the market, without access to physical spaces, network connections and business knowledge to realise their business ideas. The literature reviewed revealed how co-working office spaces, creative spaces and hubs provide creative entrepreneurs with the spatial infrastructure, amenities, and network access to mitigate challenges in the creative cultural sectors. These spaces offer a multitude of different amenities which is specific to their community’s needs. Guided by the theory of social capital and structural holes reviewed in the literature, the effectiveness was assessed by the hub’s ability to provide network access benefits or resource endowments. The research looked at whether the hub could provide creative cultural entrepreneurs with resource benefits such as a) access to social interactions, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, b) access to business or professional skills-based education programmes and mentorship, c) access to market and d) generation both social and economic benefit. The research adopted a qualitative approach, seeking insights into the creative entrepreneurs’ experiences at the hub utilising one-to-one interviews. The thematic analysis confirmed that the hub was effective overall in providing entrepreneurs with access to benefits or resource endowments embedded in the network, confirming that hubs may be an effective tool in mitigating difficulties experienced by creative entrepreneurs in the creative industries. The research also showed areas of improvement where the hub could increase its experienced effectiveness, especially in reference to routes to market. To succeed, small firms require support especially in terms of obtaining funding and financial services that can enable them to meet day to day operational needs. Commercial banks play an important role for the financing of SMEs as small firms generally depend on bank loans to obtain external finance. However, despite the support and contribution, very little attention is given to the actual forms of finance used by small and medium-sized enterprises, the available finance made by lending institutions or investors and the relation between the use of the said debt finance and enterprise performance. Furthermore, several research studies carried out focusing on the effect of debt financing on performance of firms are inconsistent. Thus, this study sought to determine the effectiveness of bank debt finance on the growth of SMEs in Namibia. To achieve the objective of the study, it was important to have it rooted in the pragmatism paradigm; followed by both the deductive and inductive approaches. Interviews were conducted with the six SME owners and structured questionnaires were completed by the seven staff of the selected bank. The study used thematic analysis to analyze primary data from interviews by following three steps namely: reducing the data referred to as coding, analyzing data by creating patterns, and generating themes and drawing conclusion. Data from self-administered questionnaires was populated and textually analyzed aided by tables. The main findings of the study were that: (1) debt financing contributed to the growth and performance of SMEs as all firms under the study who made use of debt had experienced growth in terms of generated profits and acquired assets, (2) during the assessment and approving process, the bank looked at various lending factors and that collateral was not considered as prime to accessing funding, (3) the SMEs were not sufficiently funded and that there was no appropriate funding option for SMEs, (4) in terms of relationships, there was a lack of engagement and support between the bank and the SMEs. - Description: It has become imperative for companies in the motor industry to study and understand the notion of brand loyalty due to the many inherent advantages that it offers. Although existing literature provides extensive information on brand loyalty, the concept of brand loyalty is not constant across all industries. Factors such as age and culture also alter the effects of brand loyalty and the degree of brand loyalty generated within a consumer. Taking these variables into account, this study sets out to establish if age and culture have an effect on brand loyalty in the South African motor industry. The method in which motor companies emit marketing signals are also explored to establish if the emitted marketing signals are able to assist in the generation of brand loyalty. A South African real estate agent group agreed to participate in the research and became the sample population for the study. 190 successfully completed questionnaires were obtained in the data collection process and data with a Cronbach Alpha Coefficient (α) of 0.7662 proved that the data had satisfactory reliability. The data was processed and analysed in the statistical analysis program Stata. The study discovered that marketing signals don't assist in the generation of brand loyalty in the South African motor industry. It is suggested that it is more plausible that marketing signals can assist to maintain brand loyalty, rather than to generate brand loyalty. The study also discovered that culture does not have an effect on brand loyalty in the South African motor industry. However, after considering that the cultural distribution of the sample was significantly skewed, the sample is regarded as an unreliable test of the effect of culture on brand loyalty. The study also discovered that age doesn't have an effect brand loyalty in the South African motor industry. The researcher noted that the previously cognitively strenuous process of obtaining information has become more simplified by the internet and could potentially have reduced the generating of brand loyalty among older consumers. A final test was conducted to ascertain if relationships exist between the four stages of loyalty. The study suggested that all four loyalty stages are connected which confirms that brand loyalty is generated by both attitudinal and behavioural dimensions.

This research also seeks to contribute to the academic literature on responsible institutional investment in South Africa; the opportunities it presents to optimise portfolios, as well as the means with which the challenges faced in integrating ESG factors in investment activities may be overcome. More specifically, the challenges and opportunities for the integration of ESG factors in the investment process were investigated through the experiences of a small sample of South African private equity firms. The sample of private equity firms that participated in this research are signatories of the United Nations Principles of Responsible Investing (UNPRI). Representatives of the participating firms were interviewed in line with the qualitative research design and the post-positivist paradigm of this research. The research design and paradigm are chosen to explore the experiences of practitioners in their integration of ESG issues in the investment process. This research shows that the challenges to ESG integration for the private equity firms considered have remained largely consistent over the last ten years. The challenges include industry skills and knowledge gap and the lack of reliable and comparable ESG data at the portfolio company level. The Opportunities presented, by adopting responsible investing as an investment strategy, are rooted in protecting the downside (risk management) and in finding new value creation opportunities. In summary, it was found that the participating firms continue to face significant capacity challenges in overcoming the challenges to mainstreaming ESG in investment processes. The research found that the project finance teams were aware of the environmental, social and governance risks associated with project finance transactions. Furthermore, they understood the need to have the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) risk assessment during the credit process. This research found out that the benefits of the EPs outweigh the challenges, as they promote responsible investment, thus promoting the reputation of the investor. The EPs requires the client / borrower to conduct an environmental and social impact assessment and commit to covenants that are binding in the financial legal agreements. By having processes and strategies that promote responsible investment in the financed projects / development, this gives the Equator Principles Financial Institution (EPFI) the advantage of competing in the international market. EPs may indirectly influence the financial institutions that have not adopted the EPs, to promote responsible investment by applying ESG risk assessment processes as required by the banks that have adopted the EPs. EPs lack of capacity such as human resources, policies, funds and structures is the reason why companies do not adopt responsible investment is their operation and not incorporating them in the decision-making process. Some EPFI are not committed the EPs and become free riders. Other EPFI are not complying with the EPs and this causes uncertainties with regards to the legitimacy of the ES standards. EPs are ambiguous, subjective and voluntarism can make it difficult to be achieved by the EPFI. EPs increases the approval process for the financial institution to conclude the transaction, thus delaying the start of a needed project / development. And that EPFI may be forced to have fewer clients as a result of the funding requirements required by EPs.

Mayer, Davis and Schoorman (1995, p.709) define trust as “the willingness of a party to be vulnerable to the actions of another party based on the expectation that the other party will perform a particular action important to the trustor irrespective of the ability to monitor or control that other party”. This study took the form of an explanatory case study that focussed on an interaction between a firm and a salient stakeholder and attempted to explain how this interaction influenced the perceived trustworthiness of the firm in stakeholders that were observing the interaction. The study attempted to add to the work of Crane (2020), whose research had focussed on stakeholder connectedness, and specifically how this could be utilized by firms interacting with stakeholders to engender trust in a wider group of stakeholders. The research aimed to evaluate how the Sterile Insect Release programme, operating by the firm in the Sunday’s River Valley, was given a second chance through engagement with a salient stakeholder and how the interaction was observed by a wider group of stakeholders leading to perceived stakeholder trustworthiness and social capital. The study had five objectives, namely to; (1) analyse how a firm’s ability, benevolence, and integrity enables (or does not engender) the development of the firm’s trustworthiness amongst its stakeholders; (2) analyse how the firm’s engagement with a salient stakeholder enables (or does not engender) increased levels of trustworthiness in the firm by the stakeholders that are observing its interaction with a salient stakeholder; (3) analyse the benefits of social capital gained through increased levels of stakeholder trust; (4) identify good practice guidelines for firm engagement with salient stakeholders to ensure the correct cues are portrayed to observing stakeholders for the development of the trustworthiness of the firm; and (5) make recommendations related to management practices that will support the development of trust. The research adopted a qualitative approach and data were collected through semi-structured interviews with three groups of stakeholders that were present at the meeting. A review of the literature was undertaken to identify various propositions for the research and from which a theory-driven coding memo was developed. The derived propositions were as follows: (1) observing a firm’s engagement with a single salient stakeholder will provide cues to observing stakeholders about the trustworthiness of the firm, and (2) perceptions of a firm’s trustworthiness will result in increased social capital between the firm and its stakeholders. The first proposition was divided into three sub-propositions for the study which stated; (a) observing a firm’s engagement with a single salient stakeholder will provide cues to observing stakeholders about the ability of the firm; (b) observing a firm’s engagement with a single salient stakeholder will provide cues to observing stakeholders about the benevolence of the firm; and (c) observing a firm’s engagement with a single salient stakeholder will provide cues to observing stakeholders about the integrity of the firm. From the literature analysis, various themes were identified which include, observed interactions, ability, benevolence, integrity, trustworthiness, and increased social capital. The research findings confirmed the propositions as being relevant to the case study. The findings confirmed that ability, benevolence, and integrity are key attributes in portraying trustworthiness when interacting with a salient stakeholder. All three attributes were noted by the interviewees as being important to observing stakeholders in the development of trust in a firm, although ability and integrity were found to be the dominant attributes in this case study. - Description: This study aimed to develop a sustainable business model that is cognisant of the fundamental principles of social enterprises that can sustain the operation of the Food for Us mobile application that links farmers with buyers in Eastern and Western Cape, South Africa. The Food for Us mobile application lacks a supporting sustainable social business model to sustain its continued operations, hence the need to develop one. In the study, data was generated qualitatively underpinned by an interpretive paradigm, in three workshops guided by the Delphi method. A stakeholder salience model was applied to identify key stakeholders and their salience. Three key stakeholders, namely users (farmers and buyers), Experts (App developers) and the consortium were identified. The study concluded that developing a sustainable social, innovative business model requires substantive consultation with multiple stakeholders in society. Every stakeholder is important and possesses varying salience, hence stakeholder mapping is an important exercise. The study further concluded that financial sustainability and social inclusion are critical social enterprise elements to consider in the process. The undertaking to enhance financial sustainability opens an understanding on the importance of income streams, the key activities, and value propositions offered by the mobile application. The need to remain socially inclusive brings forth questioning of value propositions, accessibility, user friendliness towards stakeholder diversity and needs. The study offers a solution for the Food for Us mobile application in the form of a prototype which is ready for testing, and if desired results are achieved, this can enhance the much needed continued operations of the mobile application. , Thesis (MBA) -- Faculty of Commerce, Rhodes Business School, 2022

- Description: Purpose: The goal of the research was to demonstrate how firms can use social media big data, to make strategic business decisions, through the lens of Resource Based Theory (RBT) and Dynamic Capability Theory (DCT), that could lead to a sustained competitive advantage. In and of its own, big data, does not constitute a competitive advantage. It may hold value for the firm, but lacks rarity, inimitability, and is not substitutable (Braganza, et al. 2017; Mata, Fuerst and Barney, 1995; Delmonte, 2003). It is in the analysis of this data, through RBT and DCT, that will turn the information into useful business intelligence (Amit and Schoemaker, 1993; Barney, 1991; 1995; Marr, 2015; Gupta and George, 2016; Kurtmollaiev, et al., 2018). Most importantly, firms must constantly reconfigure their resources in line with the dynamic business environment to ensure superior performance (Teece, Pisano and Shuen, 1997; Helfat, et al., 2007; Teece, 2014; 2018). Method: In this study, a qualitative approach was used to examine the RBT (Value, Rarity, Inimitability and Non-Substitutable - VRIN Framework) and DCT, to describe and understand the relevant theories and to build upon the quantitative results. While a quantitative approach was used to analyse the social media sentiment as depicted by Social Mention metrics. A novel technique, Chernoff Faces, was used to analyse and visualize the data (de Vos, Strydom, Fouche and Delport, 2011). Results and Findings: The research results show that, while the 10 firms in the study all have a presence on social media, it is on selective platforms. The content that is posted, is on very specific topics (Narayan, 2017; Cornejo, 2018). The Chernoff Faces indicate that the firms’ Social Mention metrics, over the 30 day period, was at low values. Since strength of social mention is depicted by the face line, the thin, long, generally sad looking faces implies that more than 70 percent of the firms’ social media strength over the study period, was weak. Conclusion: The literature indicates that the true value of big data and big data analytics can only be realised if firms make sound business decisions and act upon it swiftly.
